1st Street Apizza was pretty good. It definitely gets the job done, and it wasn't salty... thankfully. The sauce was nice, but it could have used a bit more seasoning especially oregano, and a bit of pecorino-romano cheese for a little tang, that would have elevated this pie substantially. As for the crust, it was very good, and crispy too. Anyway, what I loved the most about this pizza was the copious amount of motz, and the toppings... There were humongo chunks of sausage and healthy helpings of pepperoni to die for!.... Toppings for weeks!... as a matter of fact; the pie was a toppings mess in the best way possible... generously so. I have to state this was one of the better apizza I had in the valley. First Street Apizza is a New Haven-style pizzeria that opened in Seymour, Connecticut in January 2005. It was founded by restaurateur Chris Guerra. In 1998, when he was just 23-years-old, Guerra opened his first restaurant: Dayton Street Apizza in New Haven. After its popularity took off, Guerra looked into opening a sister pizzeria in a nearby town. Seven years later he found a small location on 1st Street in downtown Seymour and dubbed the new pizzeria 'First Street Apizza'. Both pizzerias make New Haven-style thin crust pizza and the menu features a variety of gourmet toppings including artichoke hearts, broccoli rabe, eggplant, and cherry peppers. Guerra later purchased the whole building that was attached to Dayton Street Apizza. In 2012, on the opposite side of his original pizzeria, he and Sara Holycross (his partner in business and life) opened Cilantro Fresh Mexican Grill. Guerra passed away unexpectedly in 2016; Holycross continues to run his three restaurants. I recently stopped for pizza at First Street Apizza. I had previously tried the pizza at Dayton Street Apizza and thought that it was pretty good. I was in downtown Seymour on this particular day to see a triple feature at the nearby Strand Theater. I thought that getting some pizza before the show sounded like a good idea. The interior of the pizzeria is tiny. They have a few tables and chairs but most of their business seems to be take-out. After looking over the menu, I decided to get a medium pie with half "New Haven Fresh Clam" (fresh chopped clams, mozzarella, fresh garlic, extra virgin olive oil) and half "Pesto Chicken Special" (white pizza, grilled chicken, pesto, mozzarella, sliced tomato). The pizza was flavorful and delicious. The crust didn't quite have the signature char that you would get from a traditional brick oven, but it was still pretty crispy. It paired well with a bottle of locally-produced Foxon Park Iron Brew. I only ate about half the pie and reheated the leftovers for the next day. In addition to pizza, they also make calzones, stuffed breads, subs, salads, pastas, salads, and various appetizers. So I found this place because most shops in the area do not sell single slices. I literally called 3 other places and I would have to buy a small/ personal pie which would take about 20 minutes. I needed something quick for my child to have before after-school activities. Luckily, this place met my needs. I ordered 2 slices and he told me to pick a drink; they run a 2 slice and a drink special for 6 bucks. I don't understand the low ratings. This is mostly a take out place and should be rated as such. We ordered a large pizza and it was good. We consider ourselves pizza aficionados as we lived near Roselands pizza for many years. We have since moved to Beacon Falls. Now I am not going to compare to Roselands because that is another league all by itself. So on its own merits the pizza was very good. Ample fresh toppings, sauce and cheese were good. Crust was thin and well cooked. Overall a very good pizza. With regards to price, well in these times if you want to eat out or take out your going to pay a little more than before. They do have good pizza...when it's hot. I've gotten delivery probably ten times in the past year or so and it's only been hot once. I even bypassed the online ordering system to call and ask if they could deliver the pizza hot-still no go. It feels like you are eating leftovers when it gets delivered. It actually prevented me from ordering from here for a long time, but after seeing so many recommendations from a community group, I decided it was time to try them. After ordering I'm surprised that there aren't more positive reviews. Even after a mix-up with my delivery time (got my food a lot earlier than ordered - I ordered online), the food was great. We got pizza (half mozz, half sausage and pepperoni), fries, and calamari (with cherry peppers). The pizza was loaded with toppings and the sauce is great. I really liked the crust as well. Let's be clear... they are a bit more pricey than some other places BUT their pizza is phenomenal! Thin crust and the right amount of cheese and sauce. The pasta is delicious too and the broccoli stuffed bread is very cheesy and tasty. The marinara sauce that comes with it is very flavorful too! This was the only pizza place I used when I lived in Beacon Falls. I know nothing about delivery because I always picked it up myself. Just about the only pie we bought was a large The Works (Pepperoni/Meatball/Sausage/Bacon/Onion/Green Peppers/Mushrooms). It was always the same, simply amazing! Awesome! I could never put a name to it, but there was something about the flavor that just set it apart. We ordered a couple a month for years and were never disappointed. It's sad to say but like most places, over time they lose the prestige because it's compromised by the lessening quality of the product. One time they use to thrive. This place has fallen so far off the map I hate to say it. I was out and my wife ordered food from there for the first time in a very very long time. I got home and I was like where is this from? I am a fan indeed. Yes I know there are awesome eats in New Haven (Sally's, Pepe's, Modern, Bar?) but for the valley this is where I enjoy going. It is small with three 4 tops and an eating counter however our party of 5 did just fine. Dad got the eggplant parm sub - huge portion and easily feeds 2. We also got a fresh mushroom pizza as well as a half bacon, half eggplant pie. Of course you need to wash it all down with Foxon Park pure sugar soda! Orange, cherry grape, lime - all the colors of the rainbow. The pizza is thin, thin - the way I like it and has a generous amount of toppings. The mozzarella is fresh ( they grate it there) and they use local ingredients like potato chips from Old Lyme to sauces and bread from New Haven. ( They have a sister restaurant in Westville). The service was very friendly and attentive. The young man waiting on us was very pleasant and was especially nice to my father. There was a brisk take away and delivery service going on while we were there and we were still well looked after. Recently, visited First Street Apizza and I really do not know what happened to this place. The tomatoes were complete mush in the salads; along with limp lettuce. Both pasta dishes Fra Diavolo and Spaghetti with White Clam Sauce were so DRY that they needed to be doctored up in order to eat them. For the amount of money, you are spending you would expect not to have to cook after receiving a meal some else prepared for you. I was sadly disappointed with First Street. After reading great reviews on here and hearing good things from my family, I was excited. I love pizza. In fact, I'm a bit of a pizza snob. Growing up in CT, I've had all different types of pizza, both good and bad. Yet being from this area, we have access to some of the best pizza in the country. First Street is not one of those places. We ordered 4 different kinds of pizza: mozzarella, Hawaiian, mushroom, and a white pizza with chicken and broccoli. All were bland. The best part was the wonderfully cooked thin crust. All of the pizzas with red sauce were bland, except the Hawaiian which was overpowered by the pineapples. My heart lies with white pizzas, though. This was simply one of the most flavorless white pizzas I have ever had. There was only mozzarella cheese on it. No ricotta. Strike one. The chicken was breaded. Strike two (breaded pizza on a pizza, really?!). The broccoli was HUGE and only in the center of the pizza. There was only a slight hint of garlic. Just a complete disappointment. When you have the word apizza in your name, you better have one of these two things: 1) An Italian heritage in Connecticut dating back at least 50 years....or 2) Damn good pizza that rivals the heavyweights on Wooster Street. If you close your eyes or eat blindfolded (you do that all the time, right?), then you might easily think you're in New Haven. The only downside is their crust is a little too crispy. It's not burnt or charred. It's just crispy. And when it's crispy, it tastes really dry. If they were to fix one thing, that would be it. The inside has a counter and a few seats. No tables. We decided to try a new pizza place tonight, and I heard decent things about first street. Called and ordered a large cheese. After taking over an hour and arriving luke warm, I was shocked by the price. $21 for a cheese pizza and a two liter? Have we ordered from Midtown Manhattan? Being from the West Coast my taste in Pizza is a little different then those from the East Coast. I grew up on Pizza Hut and Dominoe's and thought those were excellent pizza's, until I moved to Connecticut and ate pizza in New Haven. The Best Pizza West of New Haven. Over the last twsenty years I've explored more Pizza places than I can count. There were two or three places I really liked, but if I had to choose my favorite, it would be 1st Street Apizza in Seymour. I don't know how they manage to create such a full-flavored. delicious taste in such a thin crust. It's not for me to know, it's just for me to enjoy. I've always found the management and staff friendly and enthusiastic. That's not always the case, especially when you're getting take out orders. The dinner I ordered was gnocchi and it was smothered in a bland sauce.
