First Watch was a cool breakfast place. The menu had a great variety of breakfast options including the pancakes I ordered. I had ordered the lemon ricotta berry pancake - woah. The ricotta cheese was mixed into the batter and on top of the pancakes was a light and delish lemon curd. I was impressed. The waitress was super friendly and very helpful with the menu. This is my new favorite breakfast place. I didn't even know it was there until I was looking for places to have breakfast that weren't IHOP or Cracker Barrel. It is a smaller location and there may be a wait, but that's no problem with their app. You can put yourself in line before you get there! And if you sign up for their club you get a BOGO free entrée. They have several types of eggs benedict, which I love love love. The summer special Barbacoa beef benedict is so good I wish they'd have it year round. The grits are amazing. Very tasty. They use local and organic ingredients which is nice (but not a deal breaker for me). There's plenty of coffee going around, and they put a carafe of that and one full of water on the table. I've been twice more since the first time and the menu is full of things I want to try. My wife wanted to try this place since we were in the area headed to Memphis so we did. The restaurant had a really nice rustic vibe. My wife got the regular waffle with fresh fruit and I got the farmhouse hash with the tomatoes and avocado on the side for my wife because I don't eat either. I thought my hash was a little greasy but my wife loved it. She raved about the tomatoes. She seemed to enjoy my food more than hers but said she enjoyed her waffle. OMGosh!! Can I give 10 stars?!?! So...my son is turning the big...wait for it...5 on Saturday! And this kid loves a good waffle. I decided last week that I'd have the family come together to eat breakfast vs pizza for his birthday. Now, when I say family, I mean the ENTIRE family, it's about 25 of us. Realizing that this place doesn't take reservations, I called last week to see if there was anything that could be done to accommodate us. I was told that "we don't take reservations, but with a party that size, call on Thursday so we can make arrangements". Cool! Well...I called today (Thursday) and unfortunately it wasn't that easy. It was a pretty sad moment for this am when I was told they would not honor what I was told so I attempted to contact senior leadership. Let me tell ya...this guy (General Manager) was so full of empathy for my situation. He was kind enough to honor what I was told and was taken aback at how the team handled my situation. In my mind this is how customer service SHOULD work! I'm so excited about Saturday and I can't wait to get me some of that "green juice"!! Husband and I had breakfast here this morning with my mom who is visiting from California. I had the Power Breakfast Quinoa bowl, hubby had Farmstand Tacos, and my mom had the Farmhouse Hash Skillet. We also got a side of the seasonal Millionaire's Bacon. Everything was delicious! Hot pot of coffee left at the table was nice. Service was very friendly (and quick for the Saturday before Easter). I went to brunch here for my friends birthday meal, as they offer an e-mail coupon for a free birthday meal which is generous. She got the BLT Benedict (two poached cage-free eggs atop toasted ciabattta piled high with bacon, wine-ripened tomato, avocado and lemon-dressed arugula and covered with hollandaise served with mixed greens) and I got the Farmhouse Hash (two cage-free eggs any style atop fresh, seasoned potatoes, bacon, avocado, House-roasted onions and tomatoes, Cheddar and Monterey Jack. Served with whole grain artisan toast and fruit). These descriptions from the menu sounded delightful but the taste was quite bland--sadly. We asked for extra salt and pepper to try to add some sort of taste to what seemed like two very under seasoned meals but both of us agreed that without the free birthday meal my friend had that we would not take the time to return to this restaurant. It's a cute little Restraunt. Defiantly somewhere I'd come back too, but only if I really wanted some Avocado . Which isn't a bad thing! Plus I know for sure that they items with no avocado in them, but then again, it seems as though they like to incorporate into their food. Defiantly at place to check out for a healthier option of dinning. I got the open egg sandwich (egg, bacon avocado, and greens, on a bun) which was really really good! I also tried their drink special which was pear cider, which I was not a fan of. It was really acidic, and I didn't really taste any pear. This is a great breakfast restaurant. It really surprised me because I've been a long time Cracker Barrel fan. Some of the food here is way outside my normal breakfast routine but has been a great alternative to regular eggs and bacon, but they have that too. You've got to try the A M Super Foods Bowl. Coconut milk chia seed pudding with fresh bananas, berries, blackberry preserves and housemade granola. Served with whole grain artisan toast topped with almond butter and Maldon sea salt. Seriously good and filling! Also the banana granola pancakes are excellent. I had one and was stuffed. My husband and I went to First Watch today and had a fairly awful experience. We sat down and I noticed lipstick on one coffee cup, as did the waitress. That was a non-issue for us, since I was the only one drinking coffee and there was seemingly one clean cup. (Others should beware of this.) I ordered the classic egg Benedict and it was very very good. The problems all stemmed from poor service as it relates to my husbands lactose allergy. He ordered the Chickichanga and requested no cheese/sour cream. A minute later he flagged the waitress down to specify no milk/cream/dairy. We thought the whipped eggs may have contained lactose. The waitress didn't know if they did or not, but said she would specify no milk/cream. The food came pretty quickly but I immediately noticed that the verde sauce on my husbands plate looked like it may have contained cream. I immediately asked the young lady who delivered it if it contained dairy. She looked at me blankly and said "the ticket said no dairy so I don't think so.". I must have looked skeptical because she hesitantly said "do you want me to check?". I told her we'd appreciate it if she could. Three minutes passed and a nervous young kid comes to the table and says "do you have an allergy?" My husband explained that yes, he does have a food allergy. You know, the lactose allergy....the one that has at this point, been explained to three different employees. My husband says "do you know if this has dairy" and the employee says "yes" followed by another blank stare. My husband then asks "what type of dairy... butter or milk??" The kid says "I have no idea I was sent to stop you from eating it". My husband said "ok, if it's just butter that's ok, I just need to know what kind" and the employee says "oh, that's ok...ok" and scurries away. The waitress notices my husband is not eating (she also was one table over during the great butter debate) and asks how we're doing. I tell her that mine is excellent and then my husband explains that nobody seems to be sure if there is dairy in the sauce that is on his breakfast. She says "I'm not really sure either, next time you come in you can ask for it on the side and that way you can still enjoy it". She then tells us she'll remove it from the ticket. We appreciated that gesture and didn't necessarily care about being charged....we still just wanted to know if he could eat it or not or if we should head to the ER??? Our waitress then returns carrying a fresh plate of what my husband ordered with no sauce and says "it looks like they already had this ready for you, would you like it?". My husband told her it was no problem he had already ate the potatoes from the original plate and they didn't need to worry about giving him the second plate. Item of note; I had already finished my meal since we were now 20 minutes into this ordeal. She was apologetic and we let her know that everything else was good and my meal had been excellent. We paid and then left. The main problem here is that they had a customer with a food allergy (not that uncommon I would think) and after roughly 30 minutes and three different employees we still had no idea if there was milk or cream in the sauce? There was a manager there who seemed quite capable but at no point did anybody go over to him and ask if there was milk or cream in the sauce. Clearly somebody in the kitchen recognized there was going to be a problem if they had just served a customer with a food allergy the food they were in fact allergic to. Mainly because three employees had been notified of said allergy. I assume this is the case since the panicked young man said he had been sent to the table to stop my husband from eating it. As I've said, the eggs Benedict was great and it's a great atmosphere but it's unacceptable for employees in a restaurant to not know what is in the food they are serving. It's even more unacceptable when they don't even have the gumption to find out what is in the food. What if a child with a nut allergy is there and is served something with ground nuts? It's absolutely unacceptable and quite frankly it's negligent. Presumably, for those wondering, the Verde sauce likely only contains butter. It is now five hours later and my husband is still standing. :) read more
