Started coming back here after having not gone for years. I've truly been missing out; it's a classic and, most-importantly, it's great. Their mainstay fish & chips is good, but I normally opt for the shrimp option. I recently tried their "vegetables-on-stick" as a side and really enjoyed that too. Service is efficient; a slight wait, but only because things are freshly-cooked. Atmosphere is what you'd expect of a traditional fish & chips joint. My only nit? The "cash only" policy. I'll be back, but they'd easily do 20-30 percent more business simply by accepting credit cards. I hope they make this change; this little treasure deserves to be even busier. read more

The fish has always been good each time I got it. Crispy golden batter. Flaky white fish inside. Most recently (7/26/20) I got a 2-piece meal along with a hush puppy. The place was about to shut down for the day (at 7PM which seemed a bit early). The nice young man behind the counter gave me an extra hush puppy on the house. Much appreciated. If it weren't for the chips, this review would easily be 4 stars; however, the fries here have never been pleasing unless you like them barely warm and limp. I really wanted onion rings instead. Visited 11/3/24 around 6pm Over the years I drove past when it was known as "H.Salt Fish and Chips", I finally was the the area and decided to stop by. The interior is very outdated, which isn't an issue but it appeared dirty. Before parking I noticed another customer leaving, so I thought this place must be ok. As I enter, no one is at the front counter. About 30 seconds pass before a teenager guy about 18 years old comes from the back. I order a 3pc fish meal with a soda. Another teenager employee starts my order by taking frozen fish from the freezer which is located on left hand side below menu. I immediately had low expectations seeing the fish is frozen and not fried fresh to order. Huge bummer. The meal is ready in about 10 minutes, and I wondered if the fish was completely cooked and hot. I decide to eat in my vehicle. The first piece of fish I bit into was fairly large and totally cold in the middle. I STOPPED EATING THAT PIECE. The other two pieces were not as thick, but upon biting they were lukewarm. The fries were abysmal and flavorless, nothing special and lacked any salt. The fish had zero flavor and only tasted of old oil. Over all, the recent reviews made me think this place was serving decent food, but what I received was absolute trash. If recent customers consider this establishment really good, then I'm absolutely shocked because the food quality is horrendous. Never visiting again. Customers be warned!! read more

Whoa!!! Small spot but enough to seat a handful of people or eat in your car . Best Fish and Chips I've had hands down. I've lived in the New England area for awhile and this beats anything I've had there. Batter is amazing, fish taste fresh and Tarter sauce was on point. Fries are crispy. Cole Slaw wasn't overly sweet so I enjoyed it and wish I ordered a little more. Jumbo Shrimp was good, dipped in the delicious cocktail sauce. Service was quick and easy. I found this place a few months ago when i was craving some HSalt Fish & Chips style fish, which closed years ago. I'm pretty sure from the decor that this was originally an HSalt. The times that I've been there there was only 1 guy working that i saw, he took the order and cooked it. He was very fast and friendly, the food is cooked to order so its hot and delicious. Just want to say off the bat hands down this a great small fam business should be supported because they have the best fish and chips in Downey. The the 2 stars is for the young cashier who just brings the whole place down. Tall young fellow, I know if the owner would have been there he would not be acting uninterested to be there. Asked for suggestions on a big family size order, just kept looking down looking at his co worker. I observed the whole time , once I got my order I let him know he ignored my 73 year old mother when he was asked questions. Didn't even say I can't hear you or acknowledge her. When our order was ready, I asked him why did he ignore her ,after I asked him 2x he said Ok and kept saying thank you for coming. The fish and fries were both overcooked. I mean, REALLY overcooked. If I was eating there and hadn't taken it home already, I would have returned it. There was a very small portion of the fish in the center that was edible (not too dry) but the rest was burnt and dry. Also, I said "load it up with salt and vinegar". And then followed up with, "I don't want packets, you put it on because it's always better that way". I'd bet double what I paid that it had NO vinegar and just a little salt. I usually go to Alaskan Fish and Chips in Westminster (also a previous H. Salt). Their fish is way better. Golden crispy outside (not dark brown) and the entire filet inside is moist and full of flavor. It's a little further away for me but worth the extra few miles. read more

Probably one of the most unassuming locations of all the fish & chip shops I've been to in this region, but the strip mall it was in was easily the cleanest looking. To the fish & chips themselves, they were great! 2 of the fish were kind of skinny but thick and 2 were more of the flatter rectangular shapes that I'm used to. The fries were different, being crinkle cut instead of plain and were heavily salted. But fish & chips were all lightly crispy with the batter being just right and only a bit oily. Honestly, the ambience is comforting and nostalgic. I used to love all those old charbroiled burger joints from the 90s so this place was a bit reminiscent of that.
