Love this place. Most fish and chips I eat at other places put too much breading on the fish making it too heavy. This place however has much lighter breading and you get to taste the fish more than anything. The fries are just your typical fare but they don't taste bad, great amount of salt on the fries. The people who work here are friendly and they always give me my order hot. I love the look of the place too it's very homey. You don't see many places like this anymore. read more

My go to place for fish and chips from where I work. Years ago when I lived in Downey it was an H. Salt. Years later nothing has changed, if anything it's better. Same crunchy non-greasy batter on the fish and tender, flaky meat in the inside and fries the same. Onion rings when they have them are bomb. The fish and chips here are pretty decent. It is a little overpriced. The menu you will find in the yelp photos is not accurate. I got the four pice and two pieces were perfect while the two bottom pieces we soggy underneath. There are not many options for fried fish outside of a restaurant so this is an option if you don't want to sit down place. read more

Great fish and chips. Prices are very good too. I think our meal came out to under 20 bucks for 2 people. I like that they put the fish on a bed of fried pieces of batter. I know its unhealthy but man is it good! They have plenty of seating, restaurant is very clean and bright. No public restroom though. They do have a sign outside, so that's a plus so you know somewhat ahead of time. The inside is bland-- yellow hard booths, and there are about six or seven of them. When I tell you the fish had no flavor ya'll, it tasted like I was eating air. Every bit I had to add salt and I rarely salt my food afterwards. The batter was meh as well! On top of, I like some hot sauce with my fish and the only option they had was Tapatio. I like some Tapatio, but not on my fish and chips...not a good pairing. Please invest in some Louisana, Red Rooster, Tabasco, or even some Texas Pete...something. Now, as for the fries they were crunchy, bland, flavorless excuses for potatoes. I was highly disappointed. It's a shame I've never tried this place even though it's been there for as long as I can remember. I love fish and chips so I got exactly that. The fries, on a scale of 1 being completely soggy and 10 being completely crunchy/crispy, were a 3. So they were on the soggy side. A good French fry stands up on its own when you hold it up but these French fries were sad and limp. The "chips" portion of their fish and chips need help. Otherwise I can't complain about their fish. It was cooked perfectly, not too underdone or too overdone. The breading was crisp and didn't fall off after the first bite. Seasoning wasn't too salty or too bland. If I'm craving fish and chips I'd get their fish and chips without the chips (see paragraph 2). So they might as well be called H Salt Fish. read more

I grew up eating H. Salt and it still is one of my comfort foods whenever I'm home. I am a huge fan of the fish & chips. The batter is so light and the fish is fried perfectly. The fried zucchini is awesome and they have plenty of other options if you don't like fish. The owner is a REALLY nice guy and the pinball machine is always fun to play while waiting for your order! Seriously, it is not expensive at all. My food cost $5.22, so I'm happy. My order came out quickly (~5 min), and I was given tartar sauce, vinegar, and ketchup. Fish: Delicious, crispy batter that does not overwhelm the fish. The fish was flaky and juicy! Chips: Just average fries, nothing special. Which is great because that way I got to try the fish, shrimp and fries. Next time though I also plan to order a different side instead of chips & chips. I was offered condiments of tartar sauce, cocktail sauce, ketchup and Tabasco. They have PepsiCo family of beverages. After that the evening crew keeps it going until about 8p. We shared the four piece Fish in Chips. The light tempura batter crunchy goodness with the moist steamy flaky Alaskan Pollock is so good. Real malt vinegar, tartar sauce, ketchup, Tapatio, lemons are all available to garnish with. Dan makes great food and is always polite the customers. We drove from Anaheim last Friday after calling only to be told when we got there they were closed. There were 4 people in line and the last in line said they cut the line.
