Fish & Whistle is one of our favorite spots in Southern Maine. We've been coming back for a couple of years now and it's never once let us down. I love that the menu keeps things simple but still rotates in new specials, so there's always something fresh to try. The fish sandwich is the move if you want a classic: massive portion, packed with flavor, total bang for your buck. The squid marinara is my other go-to, lighter than the sandwich but just as satisfying every time. Even the fish and chips, which my friends usually order, come out in portions that feel almost too generous. It's got a laid-back, no-frills energy that fits the food perfectly. You order up at the counter, but they'll still bring everything to your table, and the staff keep checking back in without being asked. The bar area has its own charm, and once summer hits the outdoor tables turn into the best seat in the house on a sunny afternoon. So so so yummy! Went right when they opened on a Wednesday and the service was very quick. You order at the counter and they bring the food to you! I recommend Fredos famous fish dip! We ordered two half fish and chips meals with two sodas. The total was approximately $48.60. You have to walk up to the counter to place your order. They bring your order to your table. When your placing your order you pay right then and there but the machine is already asking for a tip? Anyway the fish came out hot and fresh while the fries were lukewarm and soggy. Don't understand why the fries were so soggy and lukewarm. We actually asked for ours without vinegar and salt. Maybe thats why our fries were mid. Plus the fries were mostly tiny and broken like the bottom of the bag remnants.If there was a manager there he really doesn't care to check and see if his customers are happy with their meals. Not once did an employee come ask any of the patrons how the food was. The ambience was very dark and dim inside. We were there at almost 1pm and it was sunny outside. A lot of seafood restaurants in Maine get by doing things the way they always have - not really improving on the dishes but getting by cooking things the "classic" way. Fish & Whistle is different. They set the bar higher and took traditional recipes and made them excellent. Their fish chowder is delicious. Cream, thyme, fresh pollack. I can't tell you how deflating it is to get a sludgy chowder in *Maine* when restaurants have access to such amazing ingredients. Probably the best fried fish I've ever had. The type of fish varies. I've had bluefish before but most recently had pollack and it was wonderful. Perfectly cooked, well seasoned, huge flakes of delicious white fish. It was excellent. It's so awesome to see a local restaurant raising the bar and setting a higher standard for food. read more

We stopped by Fish and Whistle, where we received impeccable service and enjoyed a delicious dinner! We made our selections, ordered at the counter, sat at a table, and our food came out about 10 seconds later. Apparently the chef dropped our order in the fryer when he heard us order instead of waiting for the ticket; I was shocked and impressed at the speed! And usually fast food isn't that great, but that was certainly not the case here. The fish and chips were amazing! It was very reminiscent of fish and chip shops we visited during our visit to the UK last summer. And we visited some pretty iconic chips shops there! Fish and Whistle's fried fish had a light, airy batter that provided great texture to delicious and well-seasoned fresh fish. Even through the deep frying and seasoning, it was evident that the fish itself was high-quality, fresh, and well-prepared at each step of the process from sea to table. The chicken sandwich was ok, with a fried thigh piece, but the sauce was uneven and frankly, this just didn't compare to the fish. No complaints, I would just not order this again compared to the awesome fish. But if seafood isn't your thing, then this is a fine option. The coleslaw was nice and fresh, a divergence from most mayo or cream-based recipes. This isn't going to rank highly in my top coleslaw spots (and yes, I do have a ranked list of coleslaw across the state of Maine), but it was nonetheless interesting to try this take on a classic. Lastly, we ordered a ginger beer float and wow, I'm so happy we did! All the components were tasty and clearly high-quality: from the ginger beer, vanilla soft serve ice cream, to the vanilla bean whip cream on top. It all combined to make a perfectly creamy, sweet, and refreshing treat. TLDR: get the fish and chips and the ginger beer float! I wouldn't get the chicken sandwich or coleslaw again, not because they were bad, they just didn't compare. Still worth the five stars though for that fish and the amazing service! read more

If I lived nearby, I would probably go here all the time. Top quality food, I think this is easily the best restaurant in Biddeford. The staff is nice and it's a chill environment but still feels like a nice place to go out. You just order at the front and they bring your food back to you. After coming here twice, I think basically everything here is good. They know how to flavor and fry things without making any the food feel heavy. The fish and chips are excellent and are their namesake. A petite portion is supposedly 4 oz fish? But I thought it was a good serving size! (see photo) Then the half portion is 8oz and large is 16. My friends got gluten free fish and it looked basically the same, and I'm told was good too. Fried chicken - also very good. I think the same amount of fries comes with each. Some other things I've tried include the roasted oysters, and I loved the bread crumbs on top. Just get one to try, though you might want more. We came for restaurant week which gave $5 off of $40 or more. This week, they had a mango champagne parfait which was tasty, but I really loved the soft serve and the toppings. They know how to fry a fish, that's for sure - but the portions are very small in relation to the cost of the items which is why I've given them three stars. When you order a full order of fish and chips, you expect to get a nice batch of chips for $30 - but there were not enough chips for us to split, and most were little fry bits, not larger fries. What's up with that? We should have ordered extra fries, apparently. The fish chowder was tasty but had to be 6oz at most, so tiny. The Chip Butty was incredibly delicious but again, not enough of the curry sauce, we should have ordered extra. For $80 we got fish and chips, chowder and a sandwich. All delicious but we were still hungry after we finished. So taste is phenomenal but value not so much. read more

An amazing spot if you're looking to try fish and chips. We stopped here on a Thursday eve and were able to get a table for 2. We got a bunch of things to try.. gluten free fish and chips, crispy chicken sandwich and a fried fish sandwich. The gf fish and chips were nice, light and crispy.. I wish they had a bit more seasoning in the gf flour but the tartar sauce makes up for it. My husband preferred the fried fish sandwich to the chicken sandwich and claimed that the fish was perfectly crisp and seasoned to perfection. This was my first time trying Fish & Whistle, came highly recommended from friends and also noticed they have been nominated for a James Beard award! I enjoyed the setting and how it is a come up to the bar to place your order setup! The service was excellent, very knowledgeable to what is in the food as my guest has a dairy allergy! Very casual setting, the food was amazing, loved the fry on the sandwich not too much the perfect amount, wasn't a huge fan of the bun but it was still good, tartar sauce was different couldn't put my finger on it but was not traditional. French fries were delicious. Green goddess salad was well dressed I would prefer my lettuce leaves to be cut up more than left as whole leaves (personal preference). Oyster special was amazing grilled oysters either a little bread crumb and butter! My friend said he really enjoyed the fish & chips as-well. Highly suggest the sour cherry limeade, not too sweet it was perfect! Only suggestion I would have is getting table covers for the tables I didn't like how they felt tacky / sticky. Oh the hype is so very real! Fish & Whistle is taking a simple concept - fried seafood and similar things - and excelling at it in every way! This little Biddeford spot is counter service and somewhat limited seating, so come early or plan to take it to-go. There is also bar seating, which is what we opted for, because that's where you'll get the best viewing of those giant pieces of fish taking a swim in the fryer! Let me back up - I don't have any earthly idea how someone would finish the full size fish and chips because it's bigger than a newborn. Seriously. I got the half order and it would've been incredibly tough to finish had it not been so freaking delicious. The breading is so dang crispy it's *dreamy*. The fish is so flaky and tender. Fries are hand cut and nice and crispy. Slaw is different than most - really thinly shaved cabbage and other veg, tossed in a super light vinegary dressing. I love traditional creamy coleslaw so it was just ok for me at first. But after a few bites of that fried goodness, the coleslaw is an absolutely perfect respite. It's a palate cleanser! The beer and wine selection is small but curated... Everything is on there for a reason. The rose was light and dry and just a little bit fruity - a perfect pairing with our meal. Their desserts are made in house too, and while we didn't get to try any while we were there, it sounds like they are not to be missed! So what are you waiting for? My wife and I visited Biddeford recently, walking a few of the coastal trails, then ventured downtown looking for a place for dinner. We stopped in the very small casual Fish & Whistle. There are a handful of tables and a bar. The menu was limited but they also offered a couple specials. You order at the counter and they bring the order to your table. We both decided on the fish and chips. That days fish was Pollock. I added their fish chowder. The chowder has a thin broth, a bit unusual for New England, but it was very tasty and with plenty of fish. The fried fish dinners were very with noticeably fresh pollock fried in a nice light batter. The tartar sauce also tasted super fresh. The accompanying vinegar fries were equally tasty. Service was friendly. It was a very good dinner. We were both happy we tried Fish & Whistle. read more

I should have reviewed Fish & Whistle ages ago, but have neglected a shout-out for this amazing spot for too long. Simply put, this place will knock your socks off. It's beautifully casual and unfussy with neat nautical decor and beautiful plants strung throughout the place. The staff is always friendly and willing to help. You often get a visit from one of the owners, she's also a pastry chef and is responsible for the fluffy milk buns they use for their sandwiches. They have the fryer down to a science. The battered fish comes out piping hot and delightfully crispy and light. The breading doesn't overpower the fish like st other places. The green goddess salad is always fresh and wonderful too. The hype is real: their fish & chips are excellent, top to bottom. The portion is crazy big (seriously, how is my half portion bigger than other places' full portion?), with a perfect batter (fluffy, crispy, flavorful) surrounding a moist and perfectly cooked fish, over skin-on fries, with house tartar for dipping and a lemon wedge for squeezing. Add a side of the house curry for dipping (a slightly spicer version of Irish curry), and you're golden, no notes- other than eat it immediately, because like all take out, it'll start to steam in the box on the ride home. I felt particularly inspired to post a review after visiting the UK for 2 weeks, and Fish & Whistle held up and was even better than many of the fish & chips I had over there! The fish on the full portion is massive - you really could split it with 2-3 people. Don't ignore the fish bites though if you're on a bit of a budget, I probably wouldn't recommend getting both, but the fish bites are a cost effective way to have fried fish. I also love the green goddess salad, I'd probably say to get that over the slaw. The chowder and smoked fish dip are also both excellent. I'd never had a deep fried saltine- turns out they're delicious! In a state with lots of fried seafood, this is a brilliant way to freshen up the concept in a hip space. I want to try more of the sandwiches next. The bun is excellent (love milk bread)- the squidwich and as just alright, but I am intrigued by the tempeh sandwich for next time. Edit- I forgot to mention that this is a counter order place. We found it slightly unclear the first time we went. The bar orders with the bartender, but tables order at the register. This was the best meal I ate while visiting Maine!!! A coworker was also working in the area so we decided to meet up for dinner. I like to eat local and this place had good reviews. Parking is limited, you can park on the street or there are a few spots next to the restaurant. The menu is minimal. I always find that to be a good thing, these places know what they do well and don't try to explore areas beyond that. They have fish, chicken, salads, a few apps and that is about it. My co worker had the squidwich. A filet of calamari, on a bun fried to perfection. He said it was really good. They also have a squidwich with marinara, I think I would have tried this but he said he was so intrigued with the idea of a calamari sandwich that he didn't look beyond it. I asked the server what the difference was between a full and half order of fish and chips. She held her hands out about 12 inches and said this is a half, then stretched them further and said this is a full. I reluctantly chose the half with a side of cole slaw. When it came out the fish was close to 3/4 inch thick. It had good batter, maybe a tempura, but not so thick as to overpower the fish. I don't know what kind of fish it was but it was white, moist and flaky. I have not eaten a lot of fried fish that was not from a fast food or chain place, I prefer it grilled or broiled, but this was the best fried fish I have ever eaten. The fries were hand cut and were seasoned well. I did not finish them as the fish was so big (did I mention a half order). They were good though The soda is local to Maine. No Coke or Pepsi, I think the lady said it is called Maine Root, I drink diet and it was a little more mild than Coke and not as sweet as Pepsi. I did go back for a refill. The only disappointment to me was the slaw. It was $4 and I only took a few bites. Honestly I think it is a geographical thing. Being from the south I am used to creamy slaw that is sweet. This was thin cut, very tart and in stead of a mayonnaise base it was the consistency of Italian dressing, might have been vinegar. I didn't like it but there were a lot of people who seemed to. Overall this was one of the most fun places with the best food and generous portions I have eaten in a while. If you are local I would encourage you to go often. read more

This place is fantastic! I came across their IG account 5 days after they first opened, saw they had monkfish bites and visited 2 days later. Being from Midcoast Maine I've had some fried fish in my day and I can confidelity say monkfish is where it's at. I visited Fish and Whistle on a rainy Sunday and was happy to learn they have a couple dedicated parking spots in the lot next to the restaurant and there's a ton of on-street parking. The restaurant is quaint and seat-yourself, after you order at the counter. The menu is simple and has something for everyone. My husband and I split a large fried haddock with fries and coleslaw as well as fried monkfish bites to share. We both had local beers on draft while we sat at the counter and watched the action happen in the open kitchen. Our food was very hot and fresh when it was ready. It was prepared a mere 12 feet from us so fresh is an understatement. Everything was super hot so we dove into the fries first and holy smokes they were epic. Hand cut and perfectly salty. I saw the chef toss the fries in malt vinegar, which I was uncertain about, but I was so wrong. I'd make sure to get more fries next time. After eating fries I cut the fried monkfish chunks in half to cool faster. Monkfish is firmer than haddock so it didn't immediately fall apart, which I appreciate. I doused it in fresh squeezed lemon, dipped in tartar and then devoured it. It was super sweet and meaty. Simply delicious. I then had my half of the haddock and it was perfect. In retrospect I should have had the haddock first because let's be honest, I only wanted more monkfish. Finally, the other delicacy I wanted at Fish and Whistle was the HOMEMADE sea salt and passion fruit swirl soft serve. I had mine in a cone and my husband went with a dish. Make sure you save room for it because it's yummy, subtle and unique. Can't wait to visit again and treat my dad to the monkfish because I know he will love it too. read more

If you haven't been here yet, I humbly ask you what the hell are you doing with your life? Being born and raised in New England, I like to think that I know what I'm talking about when it comes to a good order of fish & chips, but never in my life was I prepared for the Fish & Whistle. This makes my third visit - and it's almost like it gets better every time. This visit was on my birthday - and I can't imagine a more delicious way to celebrate my 42nd year. If you ask for a full order please be prepared to share this with someone. My someone is my husband, and we are fully aware that when we get a full order we'll be splitting it and taking half home. This meal is outstanding - a full fish arrives on your plate encased in a batter that begs you to actually knock on it, as it is locked and loaded. Inside is the most delectable, moist selection from the sea - and would you believe it's seasoned to perfection? It is! The order comes with handcut fries which are also well-seasoned, and although this might sound braggy - the tartar sauce is good, too! They've got a selection of Maine-made sodas on tap, the root beer is great. I wouldn't recommend the rootbeer float, though - because at $6 each I didn't expect a four-ounce pour with soft serve. But hey - you can't be perfect on all counts, right? Fish & Whistle, I am absolutely in love with you. We will be back, frequently. read more

Always love to try something new and especially in downtown Biddeford! We arrived within an hour of closing and the place was hopping! We grabbed a seat at the bar and were quickly greeted by the chef, owner and server. 5-star to the staff & vibe!!! My husband had the chicken sandwich and described it as ok and I had the squidwich with marinara sauce on a brioche and it was ok. I found the squid chewy but the overall flavor was delish! As a side, grab yourself some slaw!!! I am pretty sure I could eat that 3 meals a day! It's light, refreshing and savory. Not a super fried food lover but I am giving it a 5-star because the breading was light and full of flavor, the atmosphere was cozy and the staff was welcoming and full of hustle.
