I've been wanting to try Lil Chippy for so long and finally made it in for a happy hour on a Saturday. I really love the interior and exterior of this place, it is quaint but really feels like you're in a cute chippy in Europe. Really clean and and bright inside so whether you are dining on the outdoor tables or inside you still enjoy the sunshine. I arrived right before 3 when happy hour starts and i'm glad i did because it fills up quick! It got very busy but the staff really kept up and got good and drinks to everyone incredibly quick so props to them! Great prosecco and beer on happy hour. We ordered the hot fish which is the same fish and batter used in the lil chippy plate as well so that is a great deal on the happy hour menu. Great spicy remoulade on it and the fish was crispy and fresh. We also ordered the classic lil chippy and i really thought this was a great price for the quality you get. Great big portion and perfectly crisp. Fries are wonderful as well and we opted to do an extra old bay aioli added on which i recommend! This was close to where we were staying. We went here 4 times! Has little tables inside, With bar seating. And some outdoor seats. You order at the bar and they bring the food out to you. Very friendly service quick too. Clean and lovely decor inside. We only went during their fabulous happy hour at the time of this is 3-5 everyday they are open. $1 oysters and a few dollars off some menu items and couple drinks. Very thick and flavorful base, and not only won't you have to send out a search party to find the clams, but I'd also go as far as saying it's the most densely clam-filled broth I've had in a long time. Bacon adds texture, flavor, and saltiness in the best ways possible. Potatoes are in there, but a bit player (that's a good thing). Plenty of peppery seasoning on top, along with oyster crackers that are surprisingly not Westminster-- closer to mini Ritz crackers, but with an Old Bay twist. Golden brown batter thick but light, with a crispness not quite reaching crunch. Extremely tender and flaky; adequately moist. Solid rendition, though the chowder is what I'll remember most. Chips a little over-crisped on some, just-right on others. Coleslaw much more tart than most, with not much condiment, but thick and creamy. Great first visit. So very good. I'd go back here in an instant. I got fish and chips, but their crispy frying makes me want to try every single thing on the menu. The silent star of the dish may have been the chips - by the looks of them, I thought they'd be too thick and soft, but somehow each one was perfectly crispity crunchity with just enough of a soft center. Hopped in here for a quick oyster break, all oysters were so fresh and tasty! We also got the hamachi crudo with chili oil which was also very fresh and tasty. It was simple but really complimented the fish with the cucumber adding a nice crunch. This is cute spot for a casual seafood meal or snack. It's not an extensive menu but appears to be thoughtful. This is more of a 3.75 rating but rounded up. We went here because of all the 5* ratings and were a little disappointed. The fish and chips, while good, was not haddock (our assumption) it is hake which is a similar fish but a little more fishy tasting. Nonetheless it was very fresh from local docks. The fries were very good, and the coleslaw was ok too. I was too late for the oyster happy hour but saw another couple have them and they looked like small fresh oysters. I was craving something fried so Lil Chippy seemed like the natural solution! It wasn't too crowded on a Friday night and I snagged a seat at the bar. I definitely appreciate a leaner menu and ordered the Lil Chippy. It took a bit to come out and seemed to take a little longer than it did for other patrons but not more than 15-20 minutes. The food was really good! The fish was crispy and flaky and the fries were solid as well. Recommend moving your fish off to the side otherwise your fries will get soggy! This was an impulse stop when we realized the Japanese restaurant next door was closed on Sunday, but wow was this a great alternative. The oysters were better than the ones we had at a more popular tourist spot the night before, and the crab buddy sandwich was so good we had to order an extra one immediately after finishing the first. The mushroom buddy was also a great sandwich but no where near the level of the crab roll. Also a great tuna crudo and Mexican cola. I'll preface this by saying that my partner and I have eaten a LOT of fish-and-chips in our lifetimes, particularly when we travel to seafood-y destinations, and we keep a (short) running list of the best ones we've ever had. Before eating here, we only had two fish-and-chips spots on that glorified list (Fish. in Sausalito and Mia's Country Van in Iceland). Now, we've added Lil Chippy to the mix. Lil Chippy is more delicious than it has any right to be. The restaurant itself is unassuming, pared back, simple and cute and clean. The menu is short, the ambiance is casual, and the service is warm. You place your order at the register and they bring the food over to you. Over the course of our visits, we've tried a bunch of stuff on the menu. The tuna crudo and roasted cauliflower are good, but the Hot Fish and Lil Chippy are to die for. The fish in both dishes is so delicately fried: Lil Chippy manages to achieve that rare, perfect crisp without making the dish oily or heavy or overly greasy. The batter is incredibly light, and the fish is insanely tender. The fries that come with the Lil Chippy are delicious, too. Throw in a pint, and you have a perfect dinner. My only complaint is that malt vinegar for the fries costs extra. Note, also, that they close at 8pm, which is a bit earlier than the average restaurant in Portland. But these are all nits: I'm sure I'll be back soon for that delicious fried fish. read more

Super cute urban lobster shack on the west side of Portland away from the port area. Less touristy more locals and in a real neighborhood. The server was very cheerful and welcoming. I got the regular fish n' chip (not the buddies, which also looked incredible). The portion was initially intimidating, but the fish and fry layer was incredible light, flaky, and perfectly seasoned. Lil Chippy serves up delicious fish and chips and similar small bites on a limited yet inventive menu. I had the Mushroom Buddy (battered oyster mushrooms, cilantro, aioli on a bun) and it was SO GOOD. The sauces we got--curried ketchup, old bayoli, tartar sauce-- were also excellent. The mushrooms had the same consistency as fried clams! Yum. Sadly, my friends found the fish in the classic Lil Chippy and Fish Buddy to be slightly overcooked and the fries a bit too crispy. However, we chalked it up to a weird batch and fully plan to be back and try out their cold snacks (tuna crudo, tomato salad) or the salt and vinegar chips. The inside is super cute, with ample seating and fun fish-themed decor. They also have a mini "patio" on the sidewalk with three picnic tables. YES, so much YES! I was craving some fish n chips when visiting a friend recently in Scarborough and she mentioned wanting to try this place. We popped over one Saturday afternoon for a bit and absolutely loved it! Its a smaller place so I imagine there can be a little wait at times, but they do turn tables fairly quickly it seemed which is great. The menu isn't complex offering pretty much exactly what your there to eat along with a few starter options and a few entrees for those that may not be into fish n chips. For the rest of us the fish n chips were 100% spot on delicious! Cooked perfectly with no excesses fried bits, just loads of deliciously cooked fish paired with a wonderful homemade (I think) tartar sauce. The adult portions are a good size so you definitely wont leave hungry, and with the yummy tartar sauce youll be hard pressed to leave any food behind you could be dipping and enjoying. We had a kiddo with us so we also ordered a kid size fish n chips but it also was a really good portion coming with 3 good size pieces of fish and of course fries. Would absolutely send anyone looking for a good lunch here and will for sure be adding it to our list of must go places when we are in the area again. read more
