Fresh seafood, great prices, and fast services! On our recent visit to San Diego, Mitch's came highly recommended and we made it one of our "must-try" restaurant. The restaurant is located near the water and is highly popular among tourists and locals. There is a decent size paid parking lot at the back, but finding a spot may be tough. Taking Uber may be a better option. When we arrived, the restaurant had a line but was moving quickly. The menu was written on the board and customers ordered at the counter. Water was self served and waiters would bring out your food when ready. Both indoor and outdoor dining areas were available. For dinner, I had the seafood stew for $31, which had ample seafood in a flavorful tomato based broth. A warm baguette was served on the side. My husband had the fish and chips for $14. He said the fried fish was slightly soggy, but he enjoyed his meal. Overall, the restaurant felt authentic and the food was of solid quality. Went to Mitch's for my birthday dinner whilst on vacation. We arrived via Uber at 6 PM and it was about 3/4 full. My wife ordered the Steamers plus a wine whilst I got the Seafood Platter and a beer. It came to $72.45 plus tip. The ordering process is to order at the counter and then find a seat. Your food is then delivered to your 'table'. There are 3 tables, three booths and a plethora of counter-type seats, which is what we chose, for the view of the harbor. Our meal came in about 10-12 mins. The steamers came with a garlicky, oniony white wine broth and a 5" chunk of a baguette. I only tasted the broth but it was excellent. My platter came loaded with fries, lots of fried calamari, a 4-ounce portion of fish, three very large breaded shrimp and a huge crab cake. There were no negative takes on my meal and the highlights were the fish and crab cake. The fish was lightly battered and was perfectly cooked. The crab cake had a great crust on each side and was 1 1/2" thick, with great crab flavor. There's a big chance we will be returning next year. read more

Everyone kept recommending this place to me, but somehow I didn't quite know where it was, and didn't actually try it until this week. First, the view and ambiance: great views of the parked boats in the harbor from both the outdoor and indoor seating areas. Not a fancy-doodle seafood place (so don't wear your dancing shoes and your fancy jewelry here!), but fast, pleasant service in a clean, well run, casual seafood cafe/bar. The food: we loved the food! They had several fish salad options, as well as fish (or octopus) tacos and fried fish platters. I loved the swordfish salad, very healthy and filling. We also got the fried fish platter, which was really good, and a really good deal, especially for the price point in downtown San Diego. So now I see why everyone recommended this place! Pay parking available right outside. We walked out on the piers and along the bayside sidewalk after our meal. Such a relaxing area of town! Came in today because I've heard they have some of the best fish and chips in the area . They seem to have a good menu with a good variety . I'll start with the good things . The ceviche was soooo good , as well as the elote they served . I was surprised to see elote on the menu at a seafood place but it was amazing . My daughter and I love us some fish and chips and we are completely disappointed. They have no crunch and are so soggy . Literally pick it up and it just falls apart . 20$ for 3 pieces and fries and I feel like I just wasted 40 bucks . I didn't even finish it all because it's just a mushy mess . Unfortunately I won't be back for fish and chips , I was hoping the hype was real and I was left not impressed at all. Parking starts at 5$ for 2 hours so be prepared for that as well :) read more

Service was wonderful as the person taking our order kindly helped us identify low mercury seafood options due to my pregnancy. We ordered a variety of fish and seafood tacos, but the standout was the octopus taco. It was better than Oscar's bc of the charred flavor and crispiness in texture. The crab cakes were really good too, so much so that we ordered seconds and thirds! ;) Sitting outside was nice because gorgeous weather outside, but the seagulls try to steal your crab cakes so need to eat quickly. Views are beautiful though so for me it was worth the minor inconvenience. Parking can be tricky because you have to prepay in the lot and wait in line, but my husband took care of that with ease. I was really excited about trying this spot because it came recommended. Mitch's is a on the pier seafood shack. There's a minimal wait but, ordering goes smoothly. There is seating on the premises. While here I had the clams, avocado toast and shrimp tacos. The running theme in all the food, zero seasoning. Though the portions were nice, the food was bland. Additionally my clams tasted like someone just threw a 20oz of beer in them and let them simmer. I saved my clams for later and did reheat them with some butter and a little seasoning, it did the trick. Overall I think this is a one and done visit for me. But one persons under seasoned is another persons just right. read more

Parking is metered so be aware of the limited at lunch time. Ordering is quick but the food delivery is a bit slow. I ordered the crab cakes and clam chowder. A little disorder but quickly addressed when the chowder was delivered later. Overall crab cakes had a bit too much breading and on the saltier side. Clam chowder I can taste more cream than the clams. I dock a point due to service because the servers started clearing plates when we were still enjoying our food. Seems a bit a way to rush us so they can sit others down but still a courtesy gesture or a word of what you were doing instead of just grabbing the plates and giving people the eye. Overall you are sitting by the pier and docks of ships and give the beach restaurant vibes but the food is alright and subpar. Expected when you are in this tourist area. read more

This place was super cool! I loved the vibe inside and eating outside on the dock was a really nice experience. The food was okay, I ordered the steamed mussels and the dish needed a tad more flavor. Crab cakes were bomb, but the seagulls really go after you aggressively if you sit outside. Every few minutes they try to take another shot at steeling your food, so I def recommend sitting inside or taking out. The fries were average. This seafood joint has been in my notes for a while, and I'm so glad I finally got to try it out. There are so many options available on the menu, but I came by specifically for the crab avocado toast. I also always want oysters so I got a small order of 6. The line moves fast and after you get your order number, you can sit either inside or outside overlooking the dock. The weather's been so nice so I sat outside. The view of the boats on the water is so beautiful while eating. The crab avocado toast was really good and quite simple. They really pile on the crab!! The oysters were super refreshing. You order at the counter at Mitch's seafood. It can get pretty busy. I went on a Tuesday night and waited about 10 minutes to order and another 5-10 to get my food. Crab cake appetizer came with two large crab cakes. I thought it was really tasty and it came with both tartar sauce and cocktail sauce but it was so good , you don't need sauce The wahoo in the wahoo taco was cooked perfectly but I wish it had more of a sauce with it. I ended up adding some tartar sauce to it. I normally don't like coleslaw but their coleslaw was my favorite. What a cute spot and the view is excellent! This is a first come first server seating so dont let the line deter you. Once you order you can choose outside or inside. The staff was very pleasant and fast. All the seafood was fresh the best item for me was the grilled shrimp skewers with the chimchurri sauce light a flavorful. Everything else was ok. Many raves about this place and it didn't disappoint! I had the fish sandwich and it was so good, giant portion sizes (I only finished half!). The clam chowder was also very good, and it came out piping hot! A cup was not enough, go for the bowl. You order before finding a seat. We were there late afternoon on a weekend so it was pretty busy, both for ordering and finding seats. There's both outdoor and indoor seating. There is some free parking but most of the spaces were paid. If you sit outside beware of the seagulls! They literally will snatch your food away. The waiters will tell you that they love the crab cakes. Don't take your eyes off of them for a second! We saw many a greedy seagulls fly off with their yummy stolen treasures. Stopped in for a quick drink and bite. The line moved fairly quickly to order. We sampled the Campechana & Crab Poutine. Was pleasantly surprised to see a decent Vinho Verde was available. The crab on the fries was so fresh and sweet...definitely our favorite. The atmosphere of sitting outside viewing the fishing boats and watching the gulls try to steal food was enjoyable. There are much worse ways to spend the afternoon. The only hiccup was they'd obviously forgotten to bring the poutine out. We'd received our cold appetizer a good 30 minutes previously and everyone sitting around us that came in after us had already gotten their food. My favorite seafood place in San Diego! Everyday the menu changes depending on what they caught that day. That's how you know it's fresh! You can't go wrong with literally anything, it's all great! It's also one of those restaurants where you order at the front and they'll bring it out to you. It's just fits the vibe, and I prefer it that way. We were actually disappointed by the small amount of fish in the sandwich! You pay first then find a seat after which can be hectic during peak times. TL;DR: great spot for seafood - lots of options/variety This spot is located in the harbor and is a little hidden. Just keep walking until you see the sign. There is a large parking lot but requires payment if exceeding a certain time. There is also some street parking across the street that is free during certain hours. SPACE: When we arrived, the line was pretty long, but it went by quickly. There is a sign that requests people to not sit down until they have an order number, to help with capacity and make sure people in line have somewhere to sit after they order. Plenty of seating, indoor and outside. SERVICE: Service was very nice, informative, and cleared tables quickly. FOOD: ~Clam Chowder (3.5/5): Good consistency and flavorful. Lots of clams, but tasted more like potato than clam/cream ~Oysters: shucked well and came very cold. The ones they had that day were from Mexico which were more mild brine and plumper. ~Fish taco (3.5/5): Flavor was decent, but difficult to eat with the volume of toppings. Fish could have used a pinch of salt ~Fried shrimp taco (4/5): Shrimp was very flavorful and crispy ~Whole lobster plate (5/5): They had spiny lobster when we visited. It was cooked so well and had so much flavor. The price point was also great at $44 for a whole lobster and comes with Mexican style corn (which was so good). The prices are a little steep but it's expected because it's seafood and right off the docks. I got the kids size fish and chips and honestly it was a lot of food. My sister got the crab cakes. Mitch's Seafood has a great view of the marina.  Pretty busy at lunchtime on a weekend.  Local spiny lobsters are in season and I came to give them a try.  I noticed on the local news you can buy a fresh one dockside for $20.  It's $44 for a grilled one plus sides. Lobster had a fresh lobster flavor.  Texture was similar to shrimp.  Very good tasting dish.  My favorite preparations are fried and Chinese style with ginger sauce. Lobsters are grilled to order and took about 25 minutes. Corn tortillas were soft with a mild corn tortilla flavor.  Pretty good. 2nd visit I tried the grilled swordfish.  Swordfish was tender and flaky.  Loved the mix of flavors from the fresh swordfish and the seasoning.  One of my favorite swordfish dishes. 3rd visit I tried the fish and chips.  Fries were crispy and had a delicious fried flavor.  I could tell they used fresh good quality oil.  I liked the crunchy texture of the batter on the fish.  I wish they had seasoned it like Sally's Seafood seasons their batter with a mix of salt and pepper.  I was not excited by the mild batter paired with the mild tasting local rockfish. Filtered water was good.  Staff was nice and the service speedy.  In the future I'll stick with the grilled fish entrees which I loved. read more

Visited Mitch's after hearing a ton of rave reviews. Line looks long, but moves very fast. Plenty of metered parking in the lot. Placed an order at the counter, got a number, and had a seat right outside. Let me tell you -- if you're looking for a peaceful meal, this is not the place. Those seagulls are viscous and come nosediving at your food. Head on a swivel. You'll see a few lurking at the bus cart too. Brother and I had a cup of clam chowder, the mixed basket of fried seafood, and of course some fish tacos with a beer. In a word, everything tasted average. Not great, not bad, just smack dab textbook 3 star. Wouldn't warrant a return visit, but didn't regret stopping by. Mixed Seafood Platter is really a bang for your buck - tons of fries with an assortment of fish, calamari, shrimp, and a crab cake. Our orders: Opah grilled fish plate (22): chose Opah since it's found more in SoCal. I liked the more meaty taste of the Opah but it was a pass for others. Chowder cup (6.75): good, have had better in Washington state and Boston Mixed seafood with calamari, fish, crab cakes, squid and prawns (23.50): squid good, fish too much breading, others good and fries were not too bad We liked the coleslaw on the side! read more

We tried Mitch's Seafood for the first time after hearing so many good things about it, but unfortunately our experience was disappointing. We had our dogs with us, so we ordered takeout instead of eating there. My wife and I shared the Mixed Seafood Plate, which was described as including calamari, breaded shrimp, beer battered cod, crab cake, fries, and cole slaw. Unfortunately, there was no cod in our order at all, and only three shrimp. Most of the plate was fries and calamari. The shrimp we did get was good, but the crab cake was dense and too rich for our taste. Overall, the meal felt pretty ordinary and not worth the hype. I wish I had checked the bag before leaving, because by the time we realized the cod was missing, it wasn't worth driving all the way back. This place was recommended to us by multiple San Diego residents, so we decided to try it! The wait was very long just to order, about 35 minutes. Then waited for the food but nothing out of the ordinary for and restaurant. This location is an order at the counter, get a number, and find a spot to sit. Parking is a non issue here with the very large parking lot, but you do have to pay to park which is sort of a bummer. Anywho, let's get to the food. We ordered rockfish ceviché, calamari, fish & chips, and the crab louie salad. Rockfish ceviché - the base was delicious, very citrusy and the ingredients in the dish were top notch. However, I found out I am not the biggest dan of rockfish so 4/10 for this appetizer. Calamari - I wish we asked for a refund. This was the worst appetizer I have ever tried in my life. It tasted like the oil the seafood was made in had a previous burnt item in there and they did not change the oil. 0/10 honestly, it was not good at all! Fish & chips - this was my fiancé's dinner. He said it was fabulous and he absolutely loved it. The fries were actually pretty good and he thought this may have been the best one he has ever ordered. Crab louie salad - this was the first time I have ever ordered this. The amount of crab on the salad was honestly a lot more than I expected! I was very pleased with this salad. I asked to sub the cucumbers that came on the salad with red onions which I found very odd. Why? I asked to substitute it but instead they took off the cucumbers and charged us for adding red onion. 7/10 salad All in all, I was not very impressed with this location. I would not go back here and try other places instead. Unfortunately, long line waiting in the cold, very limited seating, and mediocre food doesn't have me wishing to go back. read more

Recommended by a fellow yelper, I went to Mitch's Seafood during my day out in San Diego. They serve many seafood items, some casual, and some more formal for dinners. I was here for lunch and was unsure of what to get. The server recommended the platter which had a little bit of everything: fish and chips, crab cake, calamari, and fried shrimp with some dips on the side. I was never really one for crab cake, but the ones served here are soft and fluffy so if that is your preference than by all means come get some at Mitch's. Loved the fish and chips. Calamari and fried shrimp was fire!! Definitely get those. I would love to come back to try their more "serious" options as this restaurant is located right on the docks. A friend and former co-worker invited me to lunch today. We thought it would be nice to revisit one of the restaurants we frequented in the past, and Mitch's Seafood on Harbor Drive came to mind. He quickly agreed. Upon arrival, we parked our cars in the lot, which charged $6.00 for two hours, and then stood in line to order lunch. During the lunch hour, the wait to order is usually about 15 minutes. As we waited, we chatted and looked at the various food and beverage options displayed along the wall. I decided to try the Fish and Chips to see if they were as good as I remembered, and I ordered unsweetened iced tea. After receiving an order number, we searched for outdoor seating to enjoy the pleasant weather and the view of the adjacent harbor. Our meals arrived after a brief wait, and I was a little surprised by the small size of the fish portions and the tiny cup of coleslaw, especially considering the tourist prices during lunchtime. Overall, the Fish and Chips were good, but not as impressive as those from restaurants I frequent in other locations. Just visited for lunch and ordered the bbq bacon cheeseburger, fish's and chips, and clam chowder. The portions were huge and the fries were probably some of the best I had in the area. The fish was moist but I did wish they seasoned their batter and unfortunately I didn't like their tartar sauce. The sauce seemed more mayo than anything.
