    Chips and guacamole. Ig@mel_foodie_ventures

I've had this restaurant bookmarked for awhile and trying it out for brunch was a perfect idea! This place had a cozy feel with amazing service. We were greeted right away and our server was very attentive. I had the Carajillo Smore. This was delicious! I wanted another but since I needed more caffeine, I got the Cafe de Olla, which was delicious as well! We started off with chips, salsa, & guacamole. The chips were thick and crispy and there were a variety of salsas that came with the chips. For my main, I got the Tamal frito Encobilijado. This crispy tamal had the right amount of crisp! The sunny side up egg paired with the black bean frijoles and the tamal was delicious all together! I tried the other two dishes, which was the chilaquiles and the Gordita, and I personally think the tamal was the best dish. For dessert, I had Frutas Borachas. It's like a fruit pie without the crust. I would definitely come back for dinner!

Second time visiting this hidden gem! Both visits were nothing short of spectacular. They have a wonderful wine selection with most wines being from Valle de Guadalup, MX and a few from northern CA. They have an even better cocktail list. On my first visit our server recommended a nice red wine, which I really liked. On the second visit I went with a classic margarita. It was on the stronger side but really good. The interior design is nice and cozy, with nice painted walls, perfect lighting (kind of moody kind of dim). The furniture commands respect with chairs ready to support your back. They did a great job transforming what was once Barrio Dog to Fonda del Barrio. I mean the atmosphere; it's a complete 180. The food is great! You will encounter flavors that are unique and that you've never heard of. Truly different and delicious dishes. In my two visits I've had the: Tiradito de salmon - light and fresh, like salmon sashimi Frijoles refritos con Veneno - venom beans- definitely no real venom, just a chicharron mix on top of black refried beans Arrachera - can never go wrong with steak Pulpo sarandeado- super yummy highly recommended it. Pollo en mole de guayaba- interesting dish with very unique flavor Pescado tikin- achiote rubs- this dish is on the smaller side, however, the unique blend of seasonings, makes it so that it's filling. The staff is great! They are ready to serve you and offer some of that Mexican hospitality right at your table. Not only that but they are bilingual and ready to speak in both English and or Spanish which essential living here in San Diego.

We had a great breakfast experience here at Fonda Del Barrio we came to celebrate my mom's bday on Saturday with some cafe de olla and mimosas. Everything that we tried was amazing and we had the best customer service our waiter Alex was great very friendly and made sure we had our refills and anything we needed would check on us. The ambiance is great they had really good traditional Mexican music. The cafe de olla was really good and kept the refills coming so yummy! They also have 90min bottomless mimosas and were super worth it! We ordered the guacamole con totopos for starters and everything was traditionally made with a salsa macha on the side that tasted really good. We had the huevos a la mexicana, and chilaquiles verdes and added egg and birria. The birria was super tender and flavorful. We really enjoyed the ambiance it truly feels like you're in a traditional Mexican home. At the end we also got to meet Rudy and he recommended we come back for dinner/evening when they have live music. We will definitely be coming back to check out their dinner menu!

Parking is difficult. We circled around a few times then parked in a questionable spot. Luckily didn't get towed. The place is very cute. It used to be Barrio Dog, but La Fonda has been opened now for 4-5 months. Service was great. The waiter took his time to explain the menu to us. They had live music on a Sunday. Happy hour is 4-6pm everyday. There are some drinks and small eats for $7-$12 ish. We ordered from both the happy hour menu and dinner menu. Everything was cooked well. The shrimp was plump and juicy. Lots of fresh micro greens were sprinkled all around. Each plate looked like a piece of art. The energy of Barrio Logan is changing and it's looking exciting.

I really enjoyed having dinner here. We went on a Tuesday night and were able to find street parking quickly. Inside is very cozy and feels like you're in an old home. Our favorites were the appetizers and dessert. We got the salmon crudo and the ceviche tostadas. Both were so so fresh and delicious. For mains we had chile relleno fideo, chile en nogada, and arrachera tampiq (skirt steak meal). We enjoyed the skirt steak and the chile en nogada the best. I would honestly probably order different entrees for myself next time, they weren't my favorite. Even though i didn't love them i wouldn't remove a star because it was beautifully presented and i could tell the dish was done well it just wasn't my personal taste. We really enjoyed the flan for dessert. Our server Elias was great and very knowledgeable on the menu.

I'm so delighted to have experienced this restaurant and it did not disappoint. The service was great, the ambiance was cozy & the waiter was attentive, friendly and informative. I believe his name was Favio??? He was awesome and took into consideration my request :) Thank you for that! The food was super flavorful (shout out to the chefs). I love the presentation of it. Try the breakfast tamal...so yummy. The only thing that disappointed me personally is that I didn't get to try the tortilla soup. That's what I was looking forward to, but it's not on the breakfast menu. Not a big deal, but I was in the mood for a soup for breakfast. But.....don't let that stop you from trying out this place. It'll just give me a reason to return for dinner.

Wow! Unique, fresh, quality food. Everything was excellent and Alex our server explained everything, checked in often enough to feel attended to, without rushing us. The BEST restaurant meal we have had in years. The prices were very reasonable for the quality. The menu is unique, don't let the unfamiliar dishes scare you off they are all ridiculously good!

Wow! This place is a hidden gem. Only 6 months and people are really missing out on a San Diego gem. Live music and fantastic food and drinks Devon and Fabio took great care of me and Sarai brought me great food. They are the kindest and most courteous staff. Sergio serenades you while you eat. I highly recommend it for atmosphere and quality of drinks and food.

Tried Fonda Del Barrio for the first time and the food was excellent. The Pollo en Mole de Guayaba was outstanding - rich, flavorful, and truly memorable. The Chile Relleno de Fideo Seco was also tasty and unique, definitely something I'd order again. The only hiccup was the timing of service -- we didn't get drinks or even water until after finishing our first appetizer, and our second appetizer arrived alongside the main course. That said, the staff was friendly, and with food this good, I'm confident they'll smooth out those small service issues as they settle in. Excited to come back and try more dishes!

The owner of City Tacos has taken this Barrio Logan structure that used to house a hot dog vendor and converted it into a full-service restaurant featuring cuisine from various Mexican regions. Fonda del Barrio had its soft opening at the end of August and a full grand opening a month later. The Pueblo-style suite had a dining room to the left of the hostess stand, a bar/lounge area to the right of the hostess stand, and outdoor front patio seating. It's hard to imagine how the previous business was able to use this space with its limited menu. I sat at the bar which had eight spots. There was a small area across from the bar where a musician could set up and play live music which happened during my soft opening visit. A two-page menu featured starters, sides, soups, and salads on one side. The other side listed the entrees and desserts. The entrees had a smaller serving size which was reflected in the prices. Only two of the ten choices were above $20. My meal consisted of the Pulpo Sarandeado and the Pescado Tikin Xic. The first entree was fresh herb grilled octopus over asadero cheese and seasoned potatoes. In terms of presentation, the octopus was beautifully plated. Unfortunately, the tentacle was chewy and could have used more cooking time. The second entree was Yucatan-style fresh rockfish filet marinated in a duo of annatto seed achiote rubs. The fish was then wrapped and baked in banana leaves. I liked the addition of pickled red onions to this dish which provided acidity. The bartender that served me was knowledgeable and efficient. He was able to address my menu questions without having to consult other staff members. Parking was all curbside along Logan Ave or the nearby side streets. Overall, I had a positive dining experience at Fonda del Barrio.

I was invited to the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony. I happened to be nearby so I decided to attend. I'm glad I did. It's such a beautiful, warm inviting space. The live music filled the bar area as it filled with people there for the celebration. Even the local news was there. First, I tried the octopus ceviche which was delicious and had a nice kick due to Serano chilis. Next, I tried a taste of the tortilla soup. It was also very good and had a smoky flavor to it. Finally I tried a small sample of the flan which was the perfect bite, not too sweet. I ordered a Mezcalita at the recommendation of the bartender. It was very good and had fresh passionfruit on top. The bartenders were swamped, but maintained their composure well. I also tried a watermelon margarita that was refreshing too. I had a reservation for after the ribbon-cutting ceremony so I moved to the restaurant. It has the same warm welcoming feeling as the bar does. I looked at the menu, which seemed reasonably priced. I decided on the huarache de camaron y nopales en salsa de gaujillo. It had so much flavor and was very filling. The servers were very attentive and knowledgeable. My water was kept filled, they made sure to check in regularly and my bill came quickly when asked. They also have outdoor seating which is lovely, but it was a bit hot to sit outside on the day I was there. All in all a lovely experience. I would love to return at night because I bet the restaurant looks and feels even more beautiful with colors, decor and lighting.

I want to gatekeep but.... Just do yourself and whoever you're with a favor and go here. It's the best Mexican food we've ever had. Every dish was literally packed full of flavor and texture -- the octopus was incredible, the arrachera a la tampequena was mind blowing and the chicken mole was amazing. The flan at the end?? Somehow even better. This place is so authentic with amazing service. Will be bringing people here regularly

So I turned around and stopped in. What I found was a quaint, tucked-away, almost inconspicuous spot delivering food and hospitality at a level that honestly borders on absurd for how unassuming it appears from the outside. The service was warm, polished, and intuitive without ever feeling pretentious. Hats off to both chefs, Christi and Mark for making me feel welcome. The wine pairings? Thoughtful, balanced, and exactly what you hope for from a restaurant that actually respects food. And then there's the burger. This thing reads like poetry: Ribeye and NY strip trim blend, cooked like a proper steak (medium rare, the only correct answer here), melted gouda, a soft house potato roll, all resting in a luxurious bordelaise sauce that would make a French chef nod in approval. Seriously. This is not a "burger joint burger." This is a chef-driven, butcher-minded expression of beef. Every bite tastes intentional. The bordelaise underneath ties the entire thing together with this deep, glossy richness that elevates it from comfort food into something bordering on fine dining. Places like this are why I still love discovering restaurants organically. No hype machine. No gimmicks. Just confidence, technique, restraint, and execution. This very unassuming little spot has Michelin written all over it.

There's literally more dogs than people. They have sketchy chairs outside for you to wait until their heart desires. One tip for this desperate little place: time your tables to 90 mins max. You don't have the square footage nor the grit to keep it up. I do not recommend this place to myself nor anyone else. I am banning myself indefinitely from Juan Jaspar. Trust your gut people. Wait outside on the sidewalk (no exterior seating) and someone will come to take you inside. Do not ring the door bell. The theme is to take it slow. Each customer typically waits 20-30 minutes to enter as part of how they do things, even if there is open seating inside. Not sure if they use a timer to space entries but it seems consistent. They take one group in at a time. Interior: A few tables around the wall and then bar seating. Would not recommend for parties greater than 2, there just isn't the space. They welcome service animals, babies/children and strollers from what I observed. The music was very, very loud. It was difficult to hold a conversation. I did not see a bathroom. Ordering process: After seating you wait for a little bit for them to bring small water cups and a QR menu with a table number and a set of rules. They do not have a physical menu, you must use your phone to order. Cell phone reception was dicey and took a long time to load. They have an interesting concept where you have a digital 'tab' open on their toast website. Unfortunately you must provide your full name, email and phone number. They have pour over drinks (note these can take 15-20 minutes), matcha, Hojicha and others. You may only order one drink per person at a time. They have a small snack menu with rotating foods. They use oat milk only. No substitutions allowed. After mobile ordering, drinks take 20-30 minutes as part of their take it slow vibe. Matcha $8 is from Paru tea and was very good. Hojicha $8 was too milky and didn't have a strong enough flavor. When you are done you walk to the register by the door and wait to be checked out. If they are making a drink you wait until they are finished. I wasn't really a fan. Staff were brusque. Music was too loud to converse.
