This is a solid neighborhood spot that is very popular with locals and has been around a long time. Besides chicken and fish, their menu includes popular soul food items like jambalaya, gumbo, hush puppies, mac n cheese, fried okra and various fresh, yummy cakes, pies and banana pudding. Generally my son and I have always been happy with the food here, though a few weeks ago when we ordered, my calamari wasn't good. It was tough and too salty. About that... today an elderly Black woman was complaining at the register about the catfish she bought yesterday, saying it was too salty. She did say other food items she had bought in the past were good. But I digress.... Today we ordered the okra, bean pie, strawberry cake, banana pudding and a 3 combo that included chicken, fish, jumbo shrimp and fries. Their okra is some of the freshest I've ever tasted. A lot of places that have fried okra on the menu don't use fresh okra, and you can tell by how it tastes. I don't eat chicken but my son said it was perfect. I tried the shrimp and catfish. Both were super fresh and fried well, crispy without being greasy. I thought both were a bit salty, though not enough for me to dislike them. My son didn't think they were salty at all, but I did, and the elderly woman did too, so I'd say if you're sensitive to things being salty, this may not be the place for you. All of it was very fresh and well-fried though. The bean pie was good , though maybe a bit dry. It had a nice flavor, kind of like pumpkin pie. The strawberry cake was outstanding. Mmmm!!! I've been coming here for years, and while a few things have changed over time, the food is still just as delicious as ever. I live in Modesto now and still make the trip because it's that good. The chicken wings are hands down my favorite--crispy, crunchy, and seasoned perfectly. The jumbo shrimp is another reason I keep coming back. My recommendation: eat it as soon as you get it! I used to like this location but went here recently and every protein I got was old over cooked and dried out. Asked for catfish and for sure got Basa which I like Basa just tell me I'm not getting American catfish it's a certain taste we are looking for when we order catfish. The catfish and chicken and fries were all super hot and fresh, I can't complain there. I do wish I had another tarter sauce for dipping fish. The food was good. I would go back. My slushy had a half slice lemon that I did not know was going to be in my drink taking up space, so I get less drink. i haven't wrote a bad review in quite some time but i'm so driven to write this one. it's friday nite and it was a heavy rain coming down. me and my wife stop to pickup basa fish, jumbo shrimps, and chicken. nevertheless we get all the way home on skyline blvd and no danmit opening to bag and no chicken. after we spent $55.00+ dollars. i immediately called cause i was upset. well fortunately he remembered; saying( iforgot to put your chicken in the bag.) i told him( my order wasn't a complicated order and i'm coming all the way off the hill in the rain). after i get there he wouldn't even give me a bean pie. insted i got a coleslaw. he refused to sub it with a bean pie. well anyway i just purchased the bean pie and accepted the coleslaw. got home and the danm chicken was overcooked and i had specifically asked them not to overcook my chicken due to a prior experience. enough is enough and i'm not going back. insted im going going across the street to bojax soul food. at least there i've always had consistency. i'm one who try to patronize local businesses and demographics and i don't feel they actually gave a danm. i'm cool at jj fried fish4 thumbs down read more

JJ's food is good no matter if I get the chicken or the fish. It's always good I have tried different sides but I have just stuck with the fries unless I want red beans and rice or Mac and cheese. Also the dessert is good too, they have the lemonade that a little bit different. I like to try different things when I come to eat here. Sometime I do a combination with two and three items. It just depends on the day. 10 out of 10. I recommend if you want a good chicken or a fish spot try this place. The service is always good as well. You need that in a good restaurant. The people who work here are very friendly but the service is sporadic. TIP: Even though it's cheaper to order on JJ website than DoorDash or Uber Eats you should order on an established app or they might not find your order. The I had catfish nuggets. The portions were generous, I had enough for two day of modest eating. The fish was oily, the bread soaked up a lot of the oil but I like to eat the bread which I couldn't because all of the oil. The batter is cornmeal that tastes like it is mixed with flour and a sweetener. Hot sauce helped over come the sweetness. The deserts are a firm pass. The banana pudding had NO bananas in it. It was dry from all the Nilla wafers. The tastes was ok, but not bananas = hard pass. I also had peach cobbler. The sauce flavor was okay but it was watery. It's been a while since I've been to JJ's fish and chicken and in the past the food has always been good. It's very obvious that this is under new management and the food was terrible. I ordered the fried fish meal. The fish was cooked. I also ordered red beans and rice and coleslaw. I wanted greens but they didn't have any. (Probably saved me from another bad experience) I was going to take this food to a friend. Turns out she wasn't home so I took it home with me. (Grateful she didn't have to experience this) Because The red beans and rice was rice was some red beans on top. Totally devoid of any kind of seasoning! The coleslaw was overpowered with , the sauce that you mix into it coleslaw. Whoever took over as manager/owner knows nothing about Soul Food! I roll by this JJ Fish every time I go to see my Dentist.. Today I was rolling by in my Donk and decided to stop for Lunch . I rolled up and parked right in front . JJ Fish is located in a small strip mall and they have a small parking lot . I rolled in and they have quite a big menu . The Front Counter also has Bullet Proof Glass. I ordered the Catfish Meal and paid by Credit Card . I was given a number . There are 2 LCD TVs for entertainment . 15 Minutes Later I had 5 Pieces of Catfish and Fries . They also packed Tartar Sauce , Ketchup and Hot Sauce . I rolled back to the Slab and unpacked my Catfish . The Catfish Fillets were pretty good sized and cooked Perfectly . They Tasted Great!!! JJs OFF OF SEMINARY JUST TO BE CLEAR 6001MacAurthur Blvd I want to give it zero stars. Obviously everything in the freezer is months possibly years old. Obviously they're using old grease, or cheap grease, you could taste it in the food. The Richmond JJ's is horrible, but this one takes the crown. So far the best one is in Vallejo, by Six flags. The one on grand in Oakland is decent. And I guess my next stop is the one on international. Currently the best fried fish that I've had so far is Mississippi catfish in Richmond on San Pablo Ave. but they're not open seven days a week so sometimes I have to make do. When I drove up the parking lot was empty, when I walked in the place was empty, and behind the counter it was empty also. It seemed like the kitchen hadn't cooked any food all morning. It was already a little after 12 noon. As I wait patiently for about a minute or two, a little Yung boy pops out from the back. I had a vibe like he must've been playing video games or smoking weed in the back. Pig opens the security door and asked me would I like to make an order. I said yes I would like A large red snapper and fries meal. He says no problem that will take about 10 to 15 minutes. I said OK, and I pay, and walk back into my car and wait. When it's time for me to go back inside, he has my food wrapped up sitting at the takeout/pick up side and tells me my price. Before I pay, I ask him can I take a look at the food first. He gives a perplexed look and says sure. As he unwrapped it for me, I can tell he hasn't dealt with this question before. I can get a vibe that he thinks that I might snatch the food and runoff with it. Which is understandable when you've never been faced with a question like this. I look at the fries and the red snapper fillets sitting on top of the bread I could tell that The meat of the fish is a little darker than I prefer, then I immediately get a old fishy smell. I let him know that it smells fishy. He says red snapper fillets usually have a stronger fishy smell. I tell him "that's not true because every time I catch red snapper and I fried up the same day fresh, it never smells like this". We have a nice brief fish conversation, and I still choose to buy the food. Honestly the young boy was nice. But I don't think he should be the ONLY one back there cooking. As a Micro-biologist, an avid outdoorsman, AND having worked in/with wholesale seafood warehouses for many years. I distinctly know the smell of fresh seafood and old seafood. I also know the smell of old fish that's been in the freezer for too long and still has been cooked. Fresh fish and old fish gives off a distinctly different smells, and enzymes. read more

You order your food and when it's ready you can dine in if you want to but most people get it to go. They have a variety of fish along with oysters and shrimp. This is the JJ's closest to my house, but I prefer the one in the 80's - I'm a fan because there aren't many options like it. If you've been to the East Coast or Chicago then you know this is somewhat of a delicacy LOL Sometimes I just want fried fish without any frills and the combos here are nice sized with seasoned fries and sometimes coleslaw, (inconsistent, I know). I don't like the white powder they put on top, (I'm pretty sure its just MSG) I order mine without it. I generally get the fish (sole or snapper), chicken and prawns, these are usually fresh but I've been once or twice when the oil they qet fried in was not-so-fresh. The desserts and sides come pre - portioned from an outside vendor my friends seem to love them , they all look delicious but I have yet to find one i'm ecstatic about. read more

Just left JJ's and I enjoyed my cat fish and buffalo combo . Great service very clean establishment and the help very friendly and helpful. I was surprised by the dessert selection. The caramel cake was just ok it wasn't as moist as I would of imagined. I still enjoyed my experience as I have gone a couple of years ago and I had a not so good experience. I love JJ's...I used to go to another one off of 106th a few years ago and it closed. And so I was craving catfish...and these days it is hard to find place that does the fillets and not nuggets! So on a hum bug we ventured out to JJs mainly because I had experience with them from their downtown days and our usual spot is now closed down. The location was clean, staff friendly, wait time not too bad. The price was a lot cheaper than our newly closed down "spot" and we were plesantly surprised at the large quanity of chicken we could see under the foil. Once our order came up we excitedly rushed home. We fantasized, still hopeful that we had found our replacement spot. Up the stairs and into the house we charged, the delicious aroma flooding our nostrils, our eyes anxious, ready for the unveil... ....and then it happened----we experienced it---overcooked chicken with a total lack of flavor. We ordered legs, thighs, and wings. The legs and wings were easy enough to identify the thighs, hmmm. Let's just say I'm not 100% sure what part of the chicken it actually was but it was boneless. Maybe there was a bone in it at one point and it evaporated from being overcooked, who knows. What I do know is they cook chicken to the point of no flavor and dryness, very dry. We tried the greens another fail. No seasoning. I recommend missing this one! read more
