Found this place online and decided to give it a try while on the way to Muir National Monument from downtown SF. We pulled into the restaurant and originally hesitated to go inside because of the massive line that extended out the door, but were extremely glad we stayed and toughed it out. You order and pay at the register, and then are giving a table number, and can choose between indoor seating or a spot on the large patio tables. While the line was long, it did move rather quickly. I had the fish tacos, and my girlfriend ordered the salmon sandwich. The portion sizes are generous--especially the French fries! The ambiance is casual and it seems to be one of the livelier spots in Sausalito on a nice weekend afternoon. Great restaurant. Kinda on the expensive side but I'd pay it all day long. Fish as fresh as it gets. I watch the fishing boats leave in the morning and bring dinner back at night. Only issue I have is the spot. It's in clippers parking lot and they discriminate against you if you drive a certain vehicle. I'd say move Clipper out and let fish have the parking lot. read more

The outdoor seating was lovely and the service was great; however I was disappointed with the food. The chunks of potato in the clam chowder were very large and it felt like eating potato soup instead of chowder. It was also very salty. The fish and chips was very plain tasting and greasy. It's quite a shame that I live 20 miles away from this place, as I would eat here everyday. The food here is exceptionally good. So much that it's compelling me to write this review an hour after I've fully digested (my meal) and taken everything in. What force led me to sit down and yelp? Well, a cup of clam chowder, that's what. I tend not to reach for hyperbolic superlatives, but in this case, I must. Fish's clam chowder is the best clam chowder I've ever had. Oh I mean it. This chowder was exquisitely yummy. It wasn't heavy, it was light but comfort food-y, with bits of bacon, potatoes and ton of fresh clams. Ding ding ding! A winner. Then I got a chalkboard special: wild arugula salad with white peaches and gianciale with clam vinaigrette. The dressing was umami-ish, sweet and salty, and kinda Asiany. Since I'm Asian and love that kind of thing, I proceeded to wolf down the entire salad. But the belle of the ball was the Fish of the Day: Wild King salmon on a bed of housemade linguine (another chalkboard special). Wow. I thought I had fresh fish in Tokyo, but this filet was insane. It had this shimmery vibrant coral color. And every bite was a burst of fresh flavor. Not a fishy flavor, but just rich, clean salmon goodness. And the pasta tasted like what I would hope house-made pasta would taste like, al dente-dense with a little bit of chewiness to it, you could eat it plain and still be happy. I really think they should make this a constant fixture to the menu, people need to experience this. My take-home-message: Order the specials. The classics are good and always there. But the specials, they're ephemeral gems, here today, and gone soon after. The portions here are generously large, and I ended up with a large doggy bag. This is a great little joint. Lots of choices on the menu and great outside seating (weather permitting). I'll start by sharing my observations about the ordering process. As most Yelpers have pointed out, the lines can be sometimes brutally long and slow on weekends. I'm not sure why the line moves so slowly if the menus are in peoples hands, perhaps things could be sped up at the counter. After standing in line a solid 10-15 minutes, I'd expect they'd have at least two cashiers during prime time, but my I only found one guy (clearly overwhelmed) at the counter. Once you get your order placed, you can choose to sit inside or out. I usually opt for the outside option as the waterfront is nice to enjoy. The food generally comes pretty quick and the staff is attentive to simple requests, but generally you'll find plenty of utensils, condiments, and napkins which is nice. I've been here about 10 or so times and almost all of my visits would be a solid 4 star experience, however this past Saturday wasn't the best one. I ordered the tuna salad sandwich with a caesar salad. My friend got the fish tacos, caesar salad and we split an order of garlic bread (yum!). I would say that my sandwich was a little odd, the bread was toasted and came with melted cheddar, but the tuna itself was either warm or room temperature which I found to be off putting. Tuna in my mind is supposed to be chilled and is generally chilled overnight to let the flavors from the mayo, capers, etc to mix in. Anyways, the tuna was warm and tasted like it been prepared minutes ago. I don't know about you, but I like tuna that is cold and well mixed. Instead, it was warm and lacked flavor. I am almost certain that the tuna salad was made within the hour so it was "fresh" but not mixed or chilled well. In fact, the tuna had a brown-ish look to it, so it clearly was served room temp. Overall, I like this place but sometimes the food & ordering experience can be not worth standing in line. A solid 3 stars. Pricy too, spent $65 on a sandwich, a salad, garlic bread and 3 fish tacos (no booze). read more

Anyway, I've been stopping by Fish for years to get my fix in fresh seafood dishes. We came by last night and all three in our party ordered their signature fish and chips. The dish was practically inedible and I'm amazed anyone would let that leave the kitchen. They must have been using old or under-temperature oil because the fish was all greasy and soggy and the batter slid right off when you picked up the fish. I wanted to love this place and expected to with all the good reviews. In hindsight I also should have checked the menu better. A lot of entrees were fried which I am not a big fan of due to respect for my body. I had the grilled fish tacos which only came with 3 medium sized soft tacos with mostly just some cabbage and three salsas which were watery and not that flavorful. For the price, I would have thought I would get some sort of a side but nothing in sight. The fish was not seasoned and just had no flavor even with the watery salsas. I tired to doctor it up with some S&P and hot sauce which helped but too little too late. I did later see one jalapeño slice on my plate after finishing which would have added some flavor and heat but that was the only one and not in the taco. My wife and son had the fish and chips. Quantity wise, it was quite generous. However, nothing was seasoned or had much flavor. We did order some $12 guacamole. The quantity was pretty generous but again the guac lacked any flavor and had to try to doctor it up myself with S&P and some hot sauce. My 3 yo had some buttered noodles for $11. 3 entrees, 1 guacamole and one child's pasta for an $89.00 early dinner. Too much for too little. My only thought is that this is a real touristy spot of non bay area rubes with very little quality food to choose from in their home town who give the rave reviews. I had been wanting to try Fish for awhile now, and coming back from Russian River Brewing Company seemed like the perfect opportunity. We ordered the White Chowder, the 1/2 dozen oysters, the KFC fried cod sandwich special, and the fresh fish special of market squid over pasta. The white chowder was delicious, not over salted or overcomplicated with bacon flavor to cloud the delicate taste of clams. We are oyster fans, and those did not disappoint either, and the KFC sandwich with the coleslaw had a very nice sized perfectly fried piece of cod nestled on the most delicious bun, and the coleslaw was filling and turned out to be what saved us from starving. Now the reason I have to subtract two stars was the squid dish. For $19, they gave us calamari that was so torched on their cooking vessel that we could not taste the delicate flavor of squid over the burned taste! How could their cooks have tasted that and thought "wow, what great seafood flavor!"???? It tasted like burnt bits off of the grill, and it marred what otherwise could have been an epic seafood meal. In addition, they just tossed the "blackened" squid on a bed of plain pasta. No sauce, no seasonings, maybe just the under salted pasta water. It was a rip off. Nothing puts a damper on a splurge evening out than playing twenty dollars for a terrible dish. I've had better main course fish elsewhere, and I'm really mad that I wasted that money. We probably should have alerted the staff to our unhappiness, but we didn't feel comfortable asking to exchange the dish for something else. Just avoid ordering their fresh fish with a giant mound of unseasoned carbs as a side, and you will like this place. read more

But last night left a terrible taste in my mouth due to careless/sloppy (?) preparation. I ordered the Tuscan Tuna salad and throughout the otherwise wonderful dish were little hard, crunchy bits - rock salt not ground correctly, perhaps? I have no idea, but the line was so line at the front, I didn't have the inclination to wait in it to tell them about it. We tried this place for the first time yesterday after reading about it in the SF Chronicle. I don't know what to make of this place. Cash only? $36 crab sandwich? I'll start with the pros: -Great views from their deck, -Nice selection of fish, tuna melt was made with fresh tuna (though also mayonnaise which is strange for a tuna melt, this was more like a tuna salad melt) and delicious sweet bread. -Inside seating was pretty clean and spacious. -Clam dip with homemade chips were really good. Cons: -Hangtown Fry is fried oysters with bacon: something was wrong and the wife has been sick all night. I see another reviewer had the same experience. -French fries are bland. -Outside tables are disgusting. I don't think they've been washed in months. Dried old grease stains, old sauce drips, bird poop all over the place. Just really gross and unsanitary. -We arrived at 11:15 not realizing they don't officially open until 11:30. We went inside (door was open) and stood at the counter, there were employees having some sort of powow just a few steps away but no one looked at us or bothered to say "we're not open yet, sorry".
