So, let's just say that having Fish. so close to my office at Marin Magazine is amazing. A coworker and I go there on lunch breaks, each get a soup and share an entree, grab an iced tea, and enjoy the outdoor seating. Note: Fish. is cash-only. Everyone at Fish. is so chipper and happy that waiting in the long line (if you go right in the middle of lunch time) isn't so bad. The food is fresh and delicious. Service was wonderful! They sure are nice people. Food was good and fresh. I had the fish and chips - the fish is cooked in bear batter, if you haven't had that kind before, just know that it's a little sweeter than regular fish and chips. Came here after a day in Sonoma for a Lavender event and thought it would be nice. The prices and the quality of food didn't match. I thought I was at Fishermen's wharf getting crab at these prices. And like Fishermen's Wharf it was hard to find a place to sit. We had to hover around spotting groups that were about to finish so we could take their table. We had a group of 6 people but every time a few walked away to get water or restroom someone would take their spot. And being so close to water at night it gets cold outside and near the doors. read more

Oh man, Fish, what happened? As you can see by my previous review, I am a massive, massive fan of Fish, and especially the $38 Crab roll. It was worth every penny. So you can imagine my dismay when, after driving all the way from So. Cal to have this sandwich (ok, I had other reasons too, I'm not a psychopath) I discovered that it had been taken off of the menu and only made special guest appearances. However, I was in luck as it was on special the day I happened to arrive. After forking out $50 (yes, 5-0 dollars) for a sandwich, I was disappointed to receive a sandwich that was not only smaller, but had less crab, and not even very much butter. It was still good, but nothing like the stellar wonder that the previous iteration of this sandwich was. I wonder what happened? Of course Fish has other, really delicious things on the menu, but that crab sandwich was the stuff of legends. read more

NUTRITIONIST APPROVED! yes! the concept is awesome - organic food and sustainably fished seafood. all very well executed and awfully good. minus one star for cash only and how fucking expensive it is. jebus. nice setting, in and outdoor seating and everything is so good. i've tried a few things but usually get a big green organic salad mix topped with fish. they'll add seasonal touches - like pomegranate seeds in the winter - to the salad and those extra touches make it that much better. i once had a whole fish with chard i think it was and it tasted very rustic and homemade, like it had come from a (professional) home chef's kitchen. gets crowded, yes, but it's worth it. good for beers and lunch after a day of hiking in marin. read more

Last Sunday I headed to Sausalito on the first day of a 2 week downpour here in San Francisco. The line was out the door, understandably. This place seems awesome. It's all sustainable seafood, the beer list looked awesome some new beers I hadn't heard of and some classics, and I liked the decor inside. Since it was beautiful outside my boyfriend and I went for the picnic tables. We ordered a small P. Reyes Blue Cheese and Iceberg Wedge salad. It was tasty and perfect size for 2 people to share. I had the Fish and Chips with halibut and my boyfriend ordered the Crab Roll. I was VERY impressed with the Anchor Steam batter on the halibut. Crispy Crispy Crispy! The fish was cooked perfectly and so flaky. I'd never had fried halibut but it was a 10. It was pretty expensive at $25 but did come with a lot of chips and a delicious lemon tartar sauce. My boyfriend's crab sandwich was good but not great. It was also expensive at $23 and the roll was more of a sub... Honestly I think the class hot dog roll is the better fit. We also ordered 2 beers. They'd run out of the beer I wanted and the keg was tapped on the Pilsner my boyfriend ordered. They suggested we wait for the new keg of Pilser so we headed outside and waited about 15 minutes for our beers which was sortof annoying because we were thirsty and hungry! Overall for a $66 lunch with the gorgeous view of Sausalito and the Bay behind us we were left with just an OK feeling. The restaurant was good but not fantastic. First - if you're reading a resto review on Yelp, then you are probably savvy enough to check the menu on the resto's website, review the prices, and decide if you're willing to pay those prices when you eat here. If you're unwilling to do that, then you shouldn't complain about the prices once you get there. Second - yes, cash only is a bummer, but there is a large sign on the front door announcing that policy, and an ATM not ten feet away from the register. If you don't have access to $13, then you probably shouldn't be eating out in the first place. Now then. I was suspicious of this place because of my "the better the view, the worse the food" hypothesis. I couldn't have been more wrong. My wife got the crab roll, and I got the fish and chips. Crab rolls are normally, well, awful - scoops of gloppy, heavy mayo-based crab salad with little to no crab flavor. Not at Fish. The crab roll is a literal dish here. Crab, butter, seasoning, roll. And it's awesome. The crab is briny, rich and bursting with flavor. The fish and chips (made with haddock): greaseless, crispy, and light as a feather. As another commenter noted, there are a lot of fries/chips as accompaniments. I mean, A LOT. It's a veritable Five Guys of the sea. But fear not - you actually don't have to eat them all, you know. That said, I did find it somewhat ironic that an establishment (justifiably) sporting a sustainability badge would dish out portions of fries that border on profligate. As for crowds: we were there at 11:40 on a Friday, waltzed right in, placed our order and sat down (inside - it was very cold that day). When we left 45 minutes later, the place was packed to the gills (no pun intended), with would-be customers circling us like the seagulls outside (simile intended). So, to sum up: review the menu, go early, and bring cash. If you can't or won't do these three things, then you really shouldn't complain. read more

For my first visit to Sausalito, we decided based on glancing at Yelp to dine at Fish. In general I dislike establishments that don't take credit cards, but specifically drove over here from SF so I'll make an exception. We arrived around 12:30 and the restaurant was busy, but not overly crowded so that we couldn't get a table outside. My boyfriend and I split the white clam chowder to start, and he got the oysters and chips and I got the fish tacos. The clam chowder was good, but a little thin, as I prefer a thicker chowder. My fish tacos were good, but assembled a little messily, as the cilantro was throw on top of the plate instead of in each taco. I also tried some of the fried oysters and chips which were alright. I think breading and frying something that is already as small as oysters makes it hard for the oyster flavor to come out. Overall, it is a tad pricey, but not unreasonable for organic/local/fresh fish. It was nice getting to eat outside by the water. read more

Each time I go to SF, I go here for their crab sandwich. $25 is a bit pricey but it's worth it each time I buy it. You may think, I'm just balling out of control (wrong, I'm just an enthusiastic foodie). Here's a tip, if you go to SF and on your eay home to Sacramento, you might as well stop here and on your way home, guess what you just missed the toll bridge so the money you save for the toll bridge can go towards the delicious crab sandwich. Though, I wonder if I should be telling you all this since it puts my own crab sandwich in jeopardy (yes, they sometime run out. Seldomly that it but it can still happen. Fresh fish, over priced and short on substance. Many years ago there was a great restaurant in that location name Caruso's. We still miss that restaurant. Yes there is a wait to order, but with the rave reviews and the delicious food, what do you expect? Seating outdoor is limited, but while your standing in line (if your with another individual) scope out a table and grab it when it clears.. The view is spectacular, especially on a sunny warm day. The prices are somewhat high, but with great quality organic foods, you shouldn't expect the restaurant to be giving the food away. After a 10 mile bike ride from San Francisco, I was pretty happy to finally get to Fish. (Bikes and I don't always get along) I picked it after googling "best fish restaurants in Sausalito" since I knew I'd be making this trip. I loved the atmosphere! Yeah, you need to wait in a long line, and yeah, you may not get to sit outside, but it's a cute place all in all, and anyway, too much sun causes wrinkles. It reminded me of a fancy version of an East Coast clam shack, my favorite kind of place. The New England clam chowder was delicious and the crab roll was pretty tasty. For $25 I'd rather have a lobster roll, so you may want to try something else. (the fries were super though) Ok, so it's a bit pricey. But you're paying for the scenery and the experience. Tad bit overpriced and everything was on the greasy side. Case in point -- my daughter's kids meal was $11 -- consisted of only four fish sticks, did not come with any sides or a drink. Read the recent reviews yesterday but decided to eat at Fish anyway despite their complaints of small portions and unexceptional food. That was not my experience the other times I ate there and certainly not yesterday! I had a grilled daily fish special over salad and it was perfect! She had a salad with flaked tuna, olives and misc. other ingredients which was an enormous plate full of lots of fish - lots of leftovers. She loved her meal too. Staff was courteous, birds begged but waited their turn. The experience was marred a bit by the poor air quality due to Northern CA wildfires which limited the usually nice Bay view - we were feet from the shore by the harbor. Awesome location on the Sausalito Marina. We went on a Sunday night and had no wait. Ate inside as it was breezy and cool outside. We shared the white chowder which is the best we've eaten in the San Francisco area. They include smoked pork belly and a good hint of sherry. Fish tacos were beautifully presented but taste was so so. (We expected a little more heat since we're from Texas). Crab dip was great with their housemade chips. Nice offering of wines and local beers. Fun to be able to walk alongside a short marina trail afterwards as the sun set. Did I say smoked pork belly in their chowder?! Delicious! read more

How was I disappointed in Fish? Let me count the ways: * I'm overwhelmed by the mockery of the place. It charges the prices of a top-class restaurant in San Francisco, but it's self-service with picnic tables. It's as though they assume we're stupid enough to believe that the cognitive dissonance of actually spending so much money in a place will make us believe it's "classy casual dining for the bourgeoisie of Sausalito". I'd like to state it's a craptastic mess that's marginally better than from drinking the bedpan of a leukaemia patient. * We spent almost $40 for self-service seafood, and received mostly starch, with little actual seafood. We were served mostly rice, pasta, or bread in our respective dishes. * Good luck in getting actual help on the menu. The bored teenage girl who took our dinner responded to our dinner questions with protracted guttural "uuuuuuuummmmmm" over and over until she found yogic nirvana. * The Calamari Bolognese had nothing that could be discerned as squid in the dish, just a ground-up mess that had no flavor. It was a $24 plate of pasta. When the waiter offered to take back the dish for something else, we took his offer. Minutes later, another kitchen worker came back distressed, demanding a explanation for why the $24 plate of pasta was returned! * The food itself was at best passable. Again, mostly starch, and I could only say the food was not *bad* -- but it only would have been acceptable if the price was one-quarter what we had paid. Do not eat at Fish, period. read more

Learned about this place from Tyler Florence on The Best Thing I ever Ate when he recommended the Crab Roll. The Crab Roll ($25) although expensive was as delicious as it looked on TV. I'd recommend only ordering it during San Francisco's Dungeness Crab Season (approx October - April). Been back half a dozen times now and tried new things. Everything on the menu is amazing. One particular thing can't be missed......The Alaskan Halibut Fish 'n Chips. Without question, the best Fish 'n Chips I have ever had. This includes the amazing Fish 'n Chips I've had in Gallway, Ireland, Vancouver & Seattle. TIP: It's cash only, so make sure to bring a bunch. There is an ATM inside. TIP #2: If you sit outside, make sure and be ready to protect your food from the Seagulls. They operate like Ninjas and will get a few of your fries when you least expect it. read more

At Fish, you order and pay for dinner at the cash register. But don't be fooled that this is just a fast food styled eatery. The menu and specials are complete with tantalizing dishes. I ordered the board-special whole trout, which was amazingly delicious. In fact, it was more than enough food for two people, so I have plenty of take-home leftovers. We had oysters, an appetizer and two entrees. Wow! All were over the top. In short, the food is as good as it gets for a fish restaurant. Although table service is not offered (your food is delivered after ordering and picking your own table), Casey stopped by to explain the dishes and ensure our satisfaction. I noticed Casey visit a number of tables, as well as to confer with people in the cash register line about the food selections. He is especially warm and friendly. Went to this restaurant with my wife and we ordered the fish'n'chips and Ceviche. The Ceviche was Halibut and half way through the meal she found a LIVE ROUND WORM wriggling around in her meal. We complained to the restaurant and naturally they said sorry but they said this was "NORMAL". What's astounding to me is why would you knowingly serve Ceviche which contains live parasitic worms??????????? If they had any suspicion that the fish they were serving in the Ceviche contained parasites, they should not serve that fish, period! Overall this restaurant was great. There is very limited indoor seating but many tables outside. The outdoor seating is right next to the ocean and has great views of the water. The clam chowder is absolutely delicious and the fish tacos are good too. The only aspect of this restaurant that I didn't enjoy was digging through a container so that I could find a clean fork. Perhaps because I expect that everyone already knows that this is THE BEST PLACE to eat local seafood in the entire Bay Area and one of the few options that are truly sustainable... The atmosphere: Friendly, comfortable, unpretentious (if you can imagine that, in Marin) right on the marina. Good for families. The service: Friendly and eager to help. The mission: FISH. is actually an homage/classroom for local and sustainable fish and produce posing as an outstanding, neighborhood restaurant. The owner's are on a mission to: support local sustainable fishing and farming. Q: Why does that rock-cod cost so much? A: Because Kenny and Co. paid the fisherman what the fish was worth and pay and treat their staff like people, not servants! Q: Why can't I get salmon at a fish restaurant?! A: You can IF IT IS IN SEASON. FISH. will not serve you farmed salmon (no matter how bad you want it) because farmed salmon is trash and not good for you or the environment. Q: What's with the farmed trout? A: FISH has actually pioneered their own brand of trout that are farmed in closed container aquaculture (not open net pens as with salmon) and fed a completely vegetarian feed (not fish meal, the production of which devastates our oceans). read more

This was on our "must visit" list on a recent trip to San Francisco. After biking over the Golden Gate, we parked our bikes near the ferry and walked to Fish. This was a mistake. Pro Tip: If you ride your bike to Sausalito and plan on going to Fish, just bike there because it's a mile or so from the ferry dock and not the most exciting walk. On to Fish......My friend ordered the Lobster Roll and I ordered the Fish and Chips. The lobster roll was AMAZING, and for $36 it should have been. You get a big, soft roll stuffed with deliciously tender and buttery lobster. The sandwich takes up half the plate and the other half is piled high with thin fries(not all that great). I ordered the $26 Fish and Chips and was a little disappointed. The fish was clearly fresh and lightly battered but didn't have as much flavor as I expected. The freshly cut, thick "chips" were unique and definitely better than the string cut fries that came with the lobster roll. All in all, a great experience and I'd definitely come back to try something different on the menu. read more

Yes, it is expensive ($77 for Shrimp "Parfait", sangria, beer & two entrees) but WELL WORTH IT - just don't go every week. We've had our share of crab & lobster rolls, from Maryland to Maine to Connecticut and these simple herb butter Crab Rolls were my favorite. The Halibut BLT was also excellent and we just love the straight forward guys with their sustainable, fresh seafood. On a sunny day, it is an outing well worth taking visitors or enjoying a lazy, relaxing, albeit expensive lunch. I love this place. A great location on the harbor and plenty of outdoor seating. We usually get the same thing each time we go: Fish and Chips, a crab roll and a cup of the white clam chowder. The fish and chips are excellent. Yes, they're greasy, but you quickly forget about the grease when you bite into the huge chunk of white flaky fish inside. I love their homemade tartar sauce and I usually ask for extra to dip my fries into. The crab roll, although a bit expensive, is what I always crave. It's nothing special...simply some dungeness crab meat, sauteed in some butter and placed on their awesome torpedo rolls. Good stuff and great with a couple beers. read more
