We drove in from New Orleans today and arrived at Fitties ten minutes after they closed... And we were greeted with open arms. They had chopped brisket, sausage, and ribs left... So we tried all three. It was excellent. The brisket was AMAZING. Topped it off with some bread pudding that had been in the owner's family for several generations. Better than any bread pudding we had in New Orleans by far. The owner and his staff were unbelievably friendly. We didn't stay long, but it was a wonderful welcome to Texas. I have eaten barbecue at some of the highest rated cue joints in Texas. I don't know why this doesn't make "the list" as some of the best in the Lone Star State. It might be because it is easy to miss. This is the best brisket I have ever eaten, and I've been to them all. Also you must try the dirty rice. I think it's the best side dish in barbecue land. We woke up early to head out to Houston from Austin. My stomach was not having a wait, so i found this little gem through yelp. It was the nearest spot to us. Boy, definitely did NOT disappoint. Okay, real talk, this place is my favorite BBQ in Texas. I realize that is a tall order, but Fitties takes the cake EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I stop by this spot every chance I get just to grab one of their signature Kinfolk sandwiches. They do not play around. Everything I have every had here has been some of the best food I have ever eaten in my life. Whether it be their vegetables or expertly smoked meat, this is a prime example of some of the best southern cooking you will find. Came by for a quick breakfast, and by the reviews I read, we were making a good call. Wrong! Really quite a bit overpriced for what we received. My biscuits and gravy were almost as good as Whataburger, but almost twice the price (too much almost for me). The girls got Big Breakfast Tacos, which were average size (but, big price...maybe that's what they meant). Now, I've saved the best for last. Do NOT, I repeat DO NOT order a soft drink. $1.99 for a CAN of soda! We left this place, never to return. read more

We came around 4:30 on Saturday, no customers. Flies EVERYWHERE, trash was all filled up and over flowing. Food was over priced and fatty. Couldn't eat but a couple bites. Only 2 sides to choose from. I will never stop here again. All 4 of us that stopped there were thoroughly disappointed. I have no tolerance for a place where a meal for one person costs $11, yet they have a minimum of $15 to use a credit card. Take the damn CC logos off the front of your shack if they are not wanted. No idea if the food is good and don't give a crap after driving all the way there and being rejected. If suggest you skip it, as customers obviously come last. Benny's is right down the street (west), takes CC with no questions asked. Was less expensive, and friendly. read more

Don't blink or you'll miss this place. This is near a 5 star place. We had the sausage, brisket, corn, potato salad, and bread pudding. The brisket was very tasty, but not fall apart, wasn't easy to fork cut - I don't know if this is the specific cut of meat or if it was over or under cooked (a tad too chewy for my taste). The sausage was VERY good. The corn was tasty, didn't need extra seasoning. The potato salad had good flavor but had too much mayo and mustard (or ?) for my personal preference although that said, I prefer German potato salad over more standard southern potato salad, so many others will probably thing it is amazing. The bread pudding was very tasty. We also sampled the dirty rice (amazing, I wish we'd gotten that over the potato salad) and the green beans (a little on the mushy side but tasted darn good). We didn't realize until after we'd order that they'll happily give you samples of things: take advantage of this to determine what you want before ordering. The employees were VERY friendly. My biggest complaints were: 1. They covered the meat with onions and pickles without asking if we want these. I personally don't care for onions and I cannot stand pickles. So when we got home (30+ minutes after ordering) the meat had been covered in pickles all that time. Fortunately, these weren't as juicy or overpowering as some pickles, so the meat wasn't ruined (as it easily could have been), but it would be nice if they asked if we wanted onions and pickles and on the side or on the meat. Yuck. 2. While I love that the meat is juicy, the juice/grease came out of the box was was at the very least pooled into the bottom of the plastic bag. If the bag had any holes, my back seat will be kind of a mess. I need to go look. Overall, if we're in the area, we wouldn't hesitate to eat there again. Sadly few things kept it from being a perfect 5 star experience. I'd easily recommend it, though. read more

I'm not gonna lie, I'm pretty bummed that I have to give this place a 2 star review. Based on all the reviews I wonder if perhaps I just had a bad experience at Fitties on my trip to Austin. I smoke brisket and ribs very frequently, and even do some catering, so I'm no stranger to good BBQ. It's a very cool little shack with friendly staff. It definitely fits the bill for a southern home-cookin' kind of place. I ordered the brisket and had a really really really terrible experience. First, they wouldn't accept my credit card because my order was under $15. Then it took them 15 minutes to get me my meal, even though there was nobody in line in front of me. I have no idea what took them so long to slice off a couple pieces of brisket... The brisket was some of the worst brisket I've ever had, I'm sad to say. The sauce was good, but the brisket was severely undercooked. I had to chew each piece for 5 minutes before I could swallow it. It was like chewing rubber. The taste can only be described as "meh". The texture was the worst part. I might have had an easier time eating a shoe sole with BBQ sauce on top. I probably won't go back since there are so many other BBQ places in the area that can probably do up a brisket much better than Fitties. It isn't really that hard to mess up, but somehow they managed to butcher my order. read more

This little place is awesome. I get tacos a couple times a month here and the owner is great. Very friendly and gracious. If i get out with my coffee mug he fills it up for free most of the time. Yummy yummy. We came for breakfast and got some breakfast tacos and a sausage egg and cheese biscuit. The brisket tacos were super delicious. Perfect amount of greatness wrapped up in a flour tortilla. Add cheese for even more deliciousness! My daughter said that the chorizo and egg taco tasted really good. She gets chorizo tacos consistently and said they had a good chorizo. When we arrived it was only a few other customers but when we left there was quite a line. They have nice outdoor rating area and space. When we drive through town again we will likely stop. My only complaint is that for the pick 3 ingredient tacos it is extra for brisket and cheese, so if only getting a brisket and cheese taco, You are paying the base price of 2.49 plus .75 for brisket and another .75 for cheese, total of $4 for one taco. read more

Traveling from Austin, traveling towards Houston, with 2 children, a teenager and a "starving" 8 year old. With choices like McDonalds and Chick-fil-A being demanded, hubby wanting bbq, I scale across the yelp for this location. Burgers and bbq, win win!!! Stopped at this little walk up stand, selections from burgers, to breakfast tacos, to traditional bbq, sandwiches, family meals, etc. had some signs for combo deals, for about $5.49 cheeseburger combo (side, soda, and cheeseburger with or without all the fixings) both kiddos selected this with no fixings of course. We chose the brisket sandwich combo, about $6.49. Same deal, soda, fries OR other side. We ordered 2. Total appx $26.00. Sat out on the picnic tables and had some delicious smoked barbecue brisket. So much flavor! Yum!! Fries were thick but not too thick, my 8 year old said they tasted "potatoey", I thought they were great! Overall very yummy, highly recommend. I've lived in the area my entire life and every time I stop by Fifties BBQ I can expect great food (breakfast lunch or dinner) and great people to talk to. Being the staff or the other customers, everyone seems to open when it's busy. Anyone who recommends the place will also tell you to call ahead and place your order because it can go from a ghost town to packed back to a ghost town in less than an hour. All the sewing is outdoors and just off highway 71 so it's a great place to stop on a long trip to stretch your legs and take in the BBQ smells without deviating off the main roads. read more

If you want authentic Texas BB-Q, this is it. It is on par with ''The Salt Lick''. Their ribs are a little slice of heaven, and the sauce is worth driving from Austin for. I had the Louise sandwich. All the meat so tender, it took me back to BB-Q in East Texas in the '70's. The bread pudding cake couldn't be better. Great cobbler. I just stopped by out of chance to this little road-side business, and now I'm hooked! A little hard to see but well worth the effort. GREAT service, a few samples and nice visit with the owner, followed by one of the best plates of bar-b-que I have eaten in quite some time. Beautiful smoke line, nice piece of edge when I told him that is what I like. Sides were tasty including a very nice dirty rice that I could taste the sage in the house made sausage that was included in it, good pintos and potato salad as well. If you have reason to be on the road between Houston and Austin it is worth heading up 71 just to make the trip to Bastrop for this stop. read more
