I've lived in the area my entire life and every time I stop by Fifties BBQ I can expect great food (breakfast lunch or dinner) and great people to talk to. Being the staff or the other customers, everyone seems to open when it's busy. Anyone who recommends the place will also tell you to call ahead and place your order because it can go from a ghost town to packed back to a ghost town in less than an hour. All the sewing is outdoors and just off highway 71 so it's a great place to stop on a long trip to stretch your legs and take in the BBQ smells without deviating off the main roads. read more

My colleague ordered beef ribs, pinto beans, potato salad and peach cobbler. All was perfect! The portions are appropriate, the bbq sauce was not too sweet and not too tangy, the fries were fresh and the peach cobbler was a hit! Now don't go getting all fancy on me. Understand, this is a bbq shack. It is a simple looking place, but dont be deterred. All this means is, the overhead is cheap and all the money is spent on the food and chefs (sarcasm). I've been going to Fitties for a little over a year now, and I'd have to say they have the BEST breakfast tacos and bbq! The "Marty" is the best breakfast taco you can get anywhere! I've had their other breakfast tacos, and they are just as good and big! I had the pleasure of meeting the owner tonight, J.O., when going to get some bbq for dinner. He is a wonderfully blessed man that KNOWS bbq!! I was wanting some sliced brisket and was told they only had chopped. J.O. said "Hold on" and went to the back and had a nice slab that he sliced for me! Had a great conversation with him and heard his story. I HIGHLY recommend this place if you are driving on Hwy71 between Bastrop and Austin. It's right near 21. You will not be disappointed in their food!! I was gonna make the long drive to Lexington today for a brisket fix, but happy that I saved some fuel and time and relied on Fitties. This was without a doubt the worst bbq I have ever eaten. To begin, they didn't have several of the major meat items on the menu at 11:30 on Saturday - ribs and chicken. When I finally received my brisket plate it appeared to about a week old. It was drowning in bbq sauce, I presume to cover up the old age and dryness. A friend also had the brisket which did not have bbq sauce. The meat resembled jerky more than brisket. It was all I could do to eat several bites. This was my first and last trip to Fittie's. If this is Fittie's regular quality of food I have no idea how they stay in business. read more

We love going to Fitties! We have literally never gotten anything bad there! The servers are always very friendly and helpful and the food is great! This is mostly a carry out type of place but they do have outdoor picnic tables if you want to sit and enjoy your meal roadside under the new canopy. We have had most of the dinners and sandwiches and the breakfast tacos. The Marty is my fav breakfast taco! The flavor of the smoke is very good and the sauce has a slightly sweet taste which I like a lot. We will return often! read more

Not a good representation of Texas BBQ. Went on Saturday, May 23 We were looking for a BBQ near Lost Pines resort for our group of 35 out of towners coming in for a Corp meeting. Based on these other Yelp reviews, we were excited about Fitties. We came away disappointed and will make our party instead at Benny's about 1-2 miles farther west on 71. You only get one chance for a first impression and maybe it was just a bad day, but this was not a good experience. Not a horrible experience, but with so many TX BBQ to choose from, it was not at all memorable. Everything came covered in sauce. Perhaps that's their style, but the BBQ should stand on its own merits.At least ask if we want sauce on the side. Brisket, by which I measure any Texas BBQ: taste was good, meat was tough, not at all tender. It is sliced thin, which is good, otherwise would be tough to chew. dry/overcooked or done at too high a temp or not long enough in the smoker. Brisket should fall apart and this did not. Chicken: was very good. I liked it a lot. Reminded me of Larry's BBQ in Daleville, AL where I first understood what BBQ meant. Pork Ribs: great flavor, but like the brisket, were tough. Should fall off the bone, not be chewed off the bone Sausage was tasty. Sides: Potato salad had a good potato flavor; not bad at all. Cole slaw was good (Better than Benny's where we tasted next). Pinto beans...Meh. Dirty rice was very good No ice tea (they were out, apparently). If you are out of town and don't know Texas BBQ, you will like it. If you know Texas BBQ, you will be disappointed - assuming again that our experience is the norm. Again, could just have been a bad day. I would go for the two meat plate: chicken and sausage, with dirty rice, potato salad or Cole slaw as the sides. Stay away from the ribs if you are just one person. The sauce and brisket I ordered was good, but I had ordered the beans because I had read how good they were. But instead I it potato salad. It was good but would have rather tried the pinto beans. Had the BBQ plate with 2 sides - dirty rice was flavorful and green beans had homemade flair with bacon & onions. My mom lives about a mile from Fitties. Whenever I go visit, the FIRST thing I want to do is stop at Fitties on the way home from the airport. I won't spoil it, but ask the owner why he named it Fitties, it is a sweet heartwarming story. A must try - the chopped beef sandwich, some of the bits will be crunchy, some chewy, but all the way through is sweet and tender. Over priced and not good. I have no idea what the hype is about. Both the fries and burger were sloppy and greasy and not in a good way. It took forever to order due to the waitress' inability to understand me when I asked what was on the burgers or what came with them. She even gave me the wrong drink twice. I lived in Bastrop county years ago and heard about this place but never had the chance to visit. Then, last weekend, the family and I had a hankering for BBQ on our way home from Houston. We were greeted first by J.O., then by Marty. As a native Texan, let me just say that this is the level of hospitality I expect, and which in Austin has fallen by the wayside in most establishments. My 3 year old loved J.O. with good reason - an oatmeal cookie will bribe most little boys. The rib he gave my husband and I to taste was somewhere in the vicinity of heavenly. You will not find better flavored brisket or sausage - honestly the best I have had in as long as I can remember. The pinto beans? Don't get me started - my family has a long history of competition surrounding "best pinto beans". These were phenomenal - I think I even drank the juice at the bottom of the styrofoam container. A few minutes later we got a call back from the owner saying that he was just about to run out of meat, and asking if we would like to place an order in advance. I found this spot on Yelp when I was craving barbecue on my way back home to Houston. It has good reviews, but most importantly it was nearby. I had trouble finding this little gem, there isn't many signs, but Waze does a great job of location. I had my reservations, initially, but once I spoke to the staff and looked around at the handmade sturdy benches and tables, I was impressed with the hometown vibe.
