My husband and I were on the hunt for some brunch and he came across Fitzgerald's on yelp. We went in on a Sunday 2 weeks ago, due to a private party we either had to sit outside or in the back booths. For once it was a nice out so we sat outside and took in the summer day. We ordered mimosas, which were part of the brunch special, any entree and mimosa/bloody mary or something else 20 bucks...not terrible. I ordered the Crab Cake Bennys, it was good and my husband got the steak and eggs, that was ok. If the steak was seasoned it would have been a lot better. Service was ok, our waitress was nice and helpful but being we were the only ones sitting outside, it was hard to get her or anyone's attention for anything. So to sum it up, like the 3 star yelp says it was A-Ok...really nothing memorable but not terrible. read more

Came here for lunch during the restaurant week. The waiter had no idea what I was talking about and said they didn't have a restaurant week special for lunch. He had to bring out the chef to explain to my friend and I that they didn't actually have a prix fixe menu for lunch. Instead, we could choose anything from the menu under $15, then add a soup or salad and dessert. For the first couse, I had the garden salad and my friend had the shrimp bisque. The salad was good...the vegetables were fresh and the dressing was good. The shrimp bisque seemed a little on the watery side. For the second course, I had the veggie burger with asiago cheese and my friend had mussels. The burger was delicious with the multigrain bun, fresh tomato and lettuce, and crispy fries. The mussels came in an incredible sauce. For dessert, I had the salted caramel vanilla crunch cake. It was a little on the sweet side, but it was so good. My friend had the ice cream sandwich. She had to pretty much take it apart to eat because the cookies were hard. I would consider coming back here again. Maybe for dinner. read more

I was only there for Happy Hour so I cannot comment on the food. $3 draft beers (all of them) and $5 house wines! Really cute atmosphere and a friendly staff. Parking is not that easy if the lot across the street is full but it is still just Glen Ridge so you'll find something. read more

Being a working father in this economy, it's nice to see a close restaurant that I can take my kids now. For me a find it important to be able to have a drink after a long day of work, and they can supply. Their bartender, Steve, is a total card, and top-of-the-line guy. He is easy on the eyes and doesn't come off bored or pugnacious at all! Sadly, the food their was lacking a wow-factor. My kids didn't love it and I was disappointed in my lamb burger. Overall, the only good qualities that this place maintains is its location, Steve, and it's gender neutral bathrooms. read more

Pick another place!!! I went here this week for a work lunch. We were celebrating a birthday and a 10 year work anniversary. Since we had a business review we had to go somewhere local. We showed up at 11:45 and we're told lunch wasn't until noon. The waitress seated us either way and seemed super annoyed that we were there so early. At 12 she came back to serve us. We all ordered the chicken club. It was terrible. The chicken was extremely rubbery; it felt like grizzle. All 3 of us took the chicken out of the sandwich and ate the remaining contents. The bread was very good and the bacon was nice and crunchy. Since we had a couple reasons to celebrate we asked what they had for dessert. The waitress told us that the dessert shipment hadn't arrived and that we had two options. Rather than wait for our order she took two dishes and walked away. The service at this place is mediocre (we didn't have to wait super long), however the wait staff is rude and unwelcoming. She didn't ask us if we needed more drinks, how our meal was, etc. read more

In the 3-block-wide town of Glen Ridge, New Jersey sits a small pub, directly behind the police station on the corner of Bloomfield Avenue and Herman Street called "Fitzgerald's 1928". This pub is special however, in that it is one of three restaurants in Glen Ridge and happens to be the only one of the sit-down variety. I went in with an open mind and a plan after reviewing the pub's website and menu. Overall the site is well laid-out and gives all pertinent information to the prospective diner. Sadly however, when you click on the "About Us" section, you just get a page with constantly revolving photos of Glen Ridge history that bare little to no relevance to the restaurant as well as the hours of operation (which I guess is important enough). When looking for parking, don't be tempted to park in any of the lots along Herman Street, since they are all reserved for tenants with permits. When looking to make a reservation, it is suggested you call ahead, although in my particular case, they did not honor my reservation and seated me right away. Aside from the lack of parking and inattentive hostess, the restaurant does have that standard 21st-century Irish-American pub atmosphere. During nice midsummer nights, one can dine al fresco or be inside with the front windows all open to allow the warm evening breeze drift in. Upon reaching my seat, I was met with three menus: one for the food/wine, one for the daily specials and one for the beer. My waiter was clearly new to the service staff since he forgot to bring me bread and a glass of water until I was halfway through with my meal. After browsing the menus for about 5 minutes, I knew what I was going to order (although I knew even before entering the restaurant). To drink, I had a Radesberger Pilsner with 4.8% ABV and to eat, I had the Lobster Mac and Cheese entree. The beer was delicious and refreshing and quite possibly the largest I have ever had; I would estimate the capacity of the glass was close to 24 fl oz. My entree came shortly after my beer arrived and was very hot. Sadly, the mac and cheese was a huge let down, since it desperately needed seasoning [salt]. The homemade panko-style breadcrumbs that garnished the dish had the smallest trace of seasoning which assisted in bringing the flavor of the dish out. The components of the dish were subpar, especially for an eatery located in the Montclair/Bloomfield area. The pasta the chef chose to use was dried orchiette that was conservatively laden with a bland homemade Vermont cheddar béchamel sauce, and tossed with noticeably-frozen and chewy 'Maine' lobster claw meat. As I finished my beer, I noticed the chef was making rounds to other diners' tables to deal with the barrage of complaints patrons had about the food. I chose not to say anything to my waiter or the chef, so as to keep a low profile, but I was not satisfied with the food. Overall, Fitzgerald's 1928 was a huge disappointment. The craft beer was good (then again what self-respecting 'pub' doesn't have good beer?!?) and the ambience was nice but ultimately one goes to a restaurant to eat; this is what I am basing my rating on. If you want a good gastropub experience, stop by Pig and Prince a few blocks away in Montclair. I will sadly not be visiting Fitzgerald's 1928 again. Charming Ambiance....Lousy Customer Service & Care We had lunch there recently and, despite the fact that we were just about the only four people in the place, one of the dishes came out cold. Of course the waiter apologized and took it back. It was brought back by the chef who made no mention of their error....just placed the plate down and left. Of course, again, it wasn't really hot but by that point our associate just ate her warm meal. Another thing....and I'd heard of this from other Glen Ridge residents....but the owner is really cold! Again, there was no one in the place but one other table and a few people at the bar....and yet, despite the fact that I looked over at him, smiled and nodded as he passed, he didn't come over to welcome us.....give us a happy holiday greeting. Nothing! And he walked back and forth in that restaurant several times before disappearing altogether. We're not his best customers i'm sure, but we do live in the neighborhood and are somewhat recognizable folks....yet there was no acknowledgement or greeting from him. The waiter, although a nice young man, was clearly inexperienced at his trade. Forgetting to bring drinks when ordered, forgetting to bring ketchup when requested. Maybe if the owner hung out more in the front of the restaurant he would notice this sub par service. The food is decent....the ambiance is great....but for my money....it'll be a LONG TIME before I return to Fitzgerald's! My money is spent where the food is great....the service excellent.....and the owner's are appreciative! read more

Great spot for a burger and pint. Plenty of drafts to choose from and the service is attentative. I thought the boneless wings we had has an appetizer we're just okay; some of the pieces were a little rubbery. I think they were made in house vs from a frozen case which might explain the inconsistency. It's nearby so I would like to return and try some of the other menu options and draft beers; plus it's getting warmer- the out door seating are might require a closer look. read more

Conveniently located right next to train station when you come home from work and need a nice cold one. On another note the bar is a typical as bars get, crowded, noisy especially if there's a porting event. They offer good bar food and appetizers. I have tried the burger and it was good. Long time patrons - our go to local spot for a drink and casual dinner. This review is for a private event in the sidecar room. Team at Fitzgerald's outdid themselves. Brunch for 50. Food was fresh and high quality. Bar set up with signature drinks was a great extra touch. The space is tight for more than 50 - but this a perfect spot for parties this size or smaller. Salads were colorful and full of flavor, French toast and bacon a huge hit, chicken parm stole the show. Great service and I appreciated the attention to detail. i have had a reservation for a party of 6 for this saturday night (a 40th anniversary party- told this to them) at fitzgeralds 1928 for OVER A MONTH... so far in advance that they told me the reservation book didnt go that far but they would write it down... i get a call today THURSDAY, two days before my reservation telling me they were canceling my reservation bc they booked a party...i said i was appalled at the lack of disrespect for their customers and I would be telling everyone I knew. Their food is delicious. We got boneless wings to start. The 1928 sauce is just their buffalo sauce and it is very good. Then my friend got the meatloaf for dinner which tastes just like mom makes. I came here on a Friday around 7 o'clock. There was about a 20 minute wait time. The atmosphere is cool - a big open space with a classy feel. The beer was very cold. The side salad, as pretty as it looked, had absolutely no flavor. The ranch dressing also tasted like nothing. I couldn't wait to try my bacon cheddar cheeseburger. When it a arrived, there was no bacon on it. When I told the waitress that my burger didn't have bacon she brought me a side plate of bacon (which I thought was a little tacky). The burger needed salt and pepper - it had no flavor and the bacon wasn't great either. My French fries were barely warm and tasted stale. 1 day ago we had a horrible brunch experience. The awkwardness of the restaurant layout Interferes with service and digestion. The kitchen has one door for in and out traffic. The rest rooms / kitchen/ outside entrance way/ basement steps/ and make shift coffee station converge into one aera. Not crowded seated immediately. One would think our service would be exmpleary at best or friendly and accomodating at least Our waitress left the impression that she was doing us a favor just by being there. Food special . steak and 3 eggs. Don't bother to ask for Med. Well done Steaks. They come medium rare. Don't bother to oder 3 egg over mediun. They come runny yokes unrecognizable Not sure if you even get 3 eggs. Under normal circumstances l would send the entire meal Back to the kitchen. However the long wait for coffie / food I was to hungry to send it back I had walk the entire length of reastuant To ask for cream. Waving for refills water/coffie didn't Help . I recently hosted my sister-in-law's bridal shower in the Sidecar private event space. Paul was very accommodating and responsive to all of our requests throughout the booking process. My boyfriend found Fitzgerald's on the internet while searching for Irish pubs. We checked out the menu, which seemed promising. Being the skeptic, slightly snobbish foodie that I am, I checked the reviews before we left. I got nervous, but decided to give it a try. The restaurant itself is actually pretty nice. The bar is a decent size, which is fortunate considering the only value of this place is in its happy hour. We sat outside because it was nice out, but I would agree with other reviewers that the inside of the restaurant could get pretty noisy for an intimate dinner as a larger crowd begins to develop. In light of the prior reviews, we decided to only order appetizers. If we enjoyed them, we would order more, if not we would move on. Our waiter was prompt and the food came quickly. As soon as I saw it, I knew it needed salt. My boyfriend took a bite, and the look on his face let me know I was right. I looked around for a salt shaker, before I went inside to retrieve both salt and pepper, which they forgot to put on our table. I took one bite and realized something was incredibly wrong. I had bitten something hard. I pulled back and I found that there was a bone in my taco. It was about 2.5 inches long and thick. Despite the fact that this is completely unacceptable, I actually appreciated this at the time, because I could have choked on it had it been smaller. I must be clairvoyant, because the very next taco that I ate had another bone. This one was smaller, and had I not been wary from the last one, I could have choked on this. I do not enjoy playing Russian roulette with my food, and although this could have been the most offensive part of the meal, it was the complete lack of seasoning that sent me in search of the check. If you don't know how to use salt, you shouldn't be in the kitchen. Bottom line...drinks only at happy hour. If you want good food, head up the street to Montclair. read more

Very nice tavern with outdoor seating and a good crowd. Its doesn't feel like a pick up bar. Its a great after work and meet up with friends spot with a cool "old school" vibe. The food is great and they have a great selection of food. From one local patron I had the pleasure of speaking with, she said she was surprised the chef works in this establishment considering his culinary experience. Basically he has a stellar resume and Fitzgerald's 1928 is fortunate to have him working for them. The only downside to the place (maybe to some) is that it's located next door to a police station and its on a very quiet street. Its the only bar/tavern on the street. So the patrons can't get rowdy if they wanted to. However, most of the patrons are 35+ years old so they probably could care less about getting rowdy. As far as food, I was there for my yoga studio's anniversary party so we had some Hors d'oeuvres. I didnt eat much because I'm now a pescetarian. But they had some great looking sliders, proscuitto pizza, plain pizza, some cheeses, fruit kabobs etc. I will definitely be back. read more

Been here for brunch once; dinner a few times and prefer their dinner selections. Good burgers, salads and desserts, Menu is pretty standard nothing fancy. Had a spinach and cheese omelet at brunch and it had no flavor whatsoever, needed some spices or pepper added. Nice choice of cocktails with the brunch- mimosas, Bellinis or St. Germaine cocktail. This place is deceiving. Very old fashioned inside, tavern looking, with servers that remind me more of diner-style establishment. However, the food does not reflect the interior. I pictured a menu of bar food, burgers, wraps, sandwiches, nachos and wings. I was wrong. Our server was great. Upbeat, attentive, and friendly. He also looked like a celebrity that neither myself nor the rest of my party-of-four could put our finger on. Brought out bread and some kind of mystery spread (thinking mashed chick peas/garlic/hummus-like) and it was yummy. I got the eggplant & goat cheese dish. Goat cheese sandwiched between lightly fried panko breaded eggplant slices, topped with a tomato sauce. Picture a hybrid of lasagna and eggplant parm but instead of pasta - eggplant, and instead of ricotta - goat cheese. A bit on the salty side, and I wish they removed the skin from the eggplant. However, it was tasty (but not exceptional). Perfect sized portion though. The other folks in my party thoroughly enjoyed their food. We were so happy to find this little gym right in our community. The ambiance is cozy and classic. The food is delicious. I would call it real classic comfort food done right.
