The area itself is really different, pretty nice and seems like a military area of some sort so some other good places near by!! Anyway. You have your option of outdoor or indoor seating. Pretty small menu, with delightful employees. I got the rooster and jalapeno mac n cheese. The rooster was so dang delicious!!!! Yumm! I loved everything involved in that sandwich. The jalapeño mac I was a little disappointed in. The Mac n cheese itself was so comforting and tasty, but the jalapeños in it I wasn't a fan of. Essentially they just had cut up raw jalapeño put into it. I ended up eating around it. The chips included were pretty good too, not sure if they are homemade or not. The price?? OK... Fitzgerald's Lunch House is a dynamite lunch. I went for lunch on a Thursday and the food, staff and overall experience were all tremendous. Don't let it's semi-hidden location fool you... you and a whole crowd of people will find this place for lunch. The menu is simple and to the point. Good sandwiches and salads with a fair amount of options. I ordered the Rooster with a side of mac and cheese. Usually in my reviews I start with the entree, but that wouldn't be proper... the mac and cheese was the star of the show. Incredible top crust layer with a perfect creamy cheese flavor. I don't want to say it's the best I've ever had, but it's in the conversation. Now to the Rooster... just a great sandwich. Chicken was well seasoned and the toppings all mixed together very nicely. I really try to support the local businesses whenever possible. I was checking Yelp and wanted to try Fitzgeralds Lunch House because it's in Lawrence. All of the reviews were very positive and the pictures had me intrigued and excited to try a new restaurant for lunch/dinner. I love a great salad, and the Cobb salad was definitely what I wanted for dinner. I also got the Wilber for today, it is a very large pulled pork on brioche bun. Online ordering was a snap and very convenient for me because I usually have my fur baby with me. I went in to pickup my order, but wasn't sure where to go, so I asked a very nice gentleman, not sure if he was the owner, however when I asked if there was a place where the online orders were, he retrieved my order and when I informed him that it was my first time there, he gave me an order of the macaroni and cheese. That's what I appreciate about supporting local businesses!!! Not only was it a nice classy gesture, this Mac and cheese is perfect!!! It tastes homemade with the perfect blend of cheese and creaminess, absolutely phenomenal! I can tell you that the Wilber is also delicious! It is not a skimpy sandwich and I definitely will eat half for lunch and the other half for dinner. I got the Cobb salad for dinner tomorrow, but I assure you it looks amazing!!! Been here about 5-6 times so far when I'm looking to simply walk to lunch on a nice day and cannot decide what to eat. This is a very mom and pop type of establishment where everyone knows each other. The menu is simple enough with about 8 sandwiches to order from. They do have rotating sides depending on what they felt on cooking that day. The food is all good, but nothing you dream about or come running back for. The concern here is the price. Most sandwiches come out to be around 11-12$ for pretty basic sandwiches. When compared to most lunch food prices around the area, this is slightly expensive and is probably the reason I don't frequent as often as I would. Try the Rooster, it is probably the best sandwich here and my personal favorite. My coworkers and I stopped in today for a brief lunch. We arrived in two separate cars, as groups of 6 often do, so one group was slightly behind the other. The one that had arrived first grabbed the two tables they could find to accommodate us and they held two seats aside to join them. The food runner was very upset by this, and came over to attempt to take the two chairs away to use elsewhere. When my friends spoke up to say the other two people were coming, he snapped back that we needed to all arrive together the next time and that it was a problem that we were sitting at these two tables. Apparently they were two two tops, but had bench seating, making it misleading. I could understand his warning to us the first time, but throughout the rest of the meal he continued to make comments under his breath as he passed our table and to other tables nearby about us. As we were wrapping up our meal, he sat down next to the remainder of our party to AGAIN say that we shouldn't have sat the way we did and next time the owner was going to come out and talk to us so he was sparing us from that. (Our experience with who we thought was the owner up at the counter was very pleasant btw). He then said they wouldn't care if they lost our business. I have never had an employee say they'd be comfortable losing our business when we hadn't been disrespectful, rowdy, messy, etc. we simply sat down a way that was unacceptable (unknowingly) and apologized for it already. After leaving an appointment I wanted to try a new spot close by for lunch. Yelp noted Cafe Audrey's and Fitzgerald's Lunch House was my closest options on Otis Ave. They sit side by side but the patio was my deciding factor as the weather had cooled off. The patio has several tables under a covered canopy which was perfect today since rain was expected. Unfortunately, the patio didn't have a table available until I was leaving. Next time. Keep in mind if you plan on visiting Fitzgerald's their only open for lunch Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. As you enter you'll see a long counter similar to Chilpote. Basically the menu is on the wall to left of counter, you order, choose sides, if any, and pay at end of the counter. Sandwiches, salads, homemade chicken or egg salad, soups and a daily special are on the menu. A small handful of kettle chips comes with each sandwich. The 2 hot sides are a scoop of mac & cheese or baked potato casserole and $3 each. Both are delicious and cheesy but my personal favorite is the creamy baked potato casserole which is loaded with cheese. Beverages are self-serve at end of the counter. The cozy dining areas are broken up within 4 rooms with approximately 40 seats. The main dining area has 3 high top tables and three, regular 4-top tables. The smallest room has 3 tall-tops with a large 8 seat booth next door with the last room seating 6-8 at regular tables. I was admiring the artwork during lunch and found out Kyle Fitzgerald, who just made my sandwich, painted those. Man of many talents! I ordered and loved the Rooster sandwich ($9.50) with chili lime chicken, bacon, white cheddar cheese, avocado and chipotle cream cheese on a incredibly soft baguette. I appreciated the chicken was sliced thin allowing me to enjoy all the flavors in each bite. When Kyle brought a carryout box to me he was kind enough to place a sample of the delicious mac & cheese inside to sample with my half sandwich. All of the team members were friendly and appeared to truly care about each customers dining experience. I also learned Mom, Dana, has been catering for 30 years and where Kyle learned his love of cooking. I'm glad I had the opportunity to dine at Fitzgeralds Lunch House. I really enjoyed my rainy day lunch at Fitzgerald's. Since I got here late in the lunch hour, there was no line at the counter. I was greeted as I entered and was directed to the menu on display to the left of the service counter and towards the daily specials written on mini blackboards on the counter. Once I stepped back to the counter, I was greeted again and placed my order. They have both dine in and carryout. I opted for the dine in and after paying for my order, was directed to the drinks (self help water & teas, canned sodas.) While waiting for my order, I noticed a number of cool & vibrant art pieces hanging around the shop. Turns out that Kyle Fitzgerald not only works here, but does all the paintings too. (Most are for sale.) Before long, my order was brought out to me: Cubano sandwich with real Cuban bread; potato salad (with red skin potato chunks and spicy brown mustard or maybe horseradish), potato chips, and they tossed in some Mac & Cheese to sample (I think it was because I traveled 50 minutes through the rainstorm to get here! ha!) Everything was tasty and fresh and worth ordering. I have had a number of Cuban sandwiches in my day, most not making much effort to be authentic. But this was prepared with the right ingredients, still warm and moist, with a nice crunch to the outer crust of the bread. Yum! The mac and cheese had a solid cheese flavor without being too gooey or too dry. The potato salad had enough spice to give a quick jab to the taste buds, but not so strong as to grow overwhelming, especially when paired with the sandwich. I was pleased to see that all the folks behind the counter were pleasant and engaged the customers in what seemed a genuinely positive manner. They also have four standard salads, 7 sandwiches, soup, and cookies available. So, a nice variety of options for returning customers. The dining room is on the small side, but fortunately, in summer months there is additional outdoor dining on the east side of the building that is covered by the roof overhang. I noticed several of the patrons were dining outside watching the rain fall while staying dry. For customers dining in, each table has additional napkins and silverware available in a jar. There is a collection spot near the door for dropping off your trash and returning your serving tray and utensils. If you are not familiar with the area, you can take I-465 to the east side and get off on 56th Street. Take 56th east to Post and turn north (left on Post). The first stop sign is Otis (turn right). About a block and a half east on Otis, you will see Cafe Audrey on the left. Pull into the parking lot just passed the Cafe and you will see Fitzgerald's. Found this hidden gem on Yelp! So glad I did as I see it becoming a lunch time staple. I was fortunate enough to run into the owner/chef while there and he took me through the menu and his passion for fresh, scratch made food oozed from him. Nothing gets me more excited than true passion for your craft. He showed me his bacon bits which he makes from bacon cooked in a well seasoned cast iron skillet daily. I asked about other ingredients on the line (place is set up like a sandwich/ deli shop) each one was described in detail to me by him. He makes his own barbecue sauce - one sweet, one spicy. His mac and cheese is made casserole style with eggs and cheese making a nice cheesy custard for the dish. He smokes his own pork for 12 hours at a low temp in a 20 year well seasoned smoker! I seriously wanted one of everything! I was spending the afternoon pool side so went with a crisp, refreshing Cobb salad that was on special. He told me about his herb buttermilk dressing and he also has an avocado vinaigrette that day. He could tell I wanted both so he gave me a small sample of the avocado on the side too! Both we exceptional. The avocado was creamy and tangy! The herb buttermilk was light and delicious! I also scored a deviled egg and cookie to go. Each coming in at $1/piece. Oh and the salad that rocked my world was only $10! I'm already planning a return trip, possibly tomorrow! They are only open for lunch 11-2 Monday - Friday! We were driving from Cincinnati to Chicago, where we were going to fly home. I decided to take a look at the yelp ratings for lunch spots near Indianapolis, and found Fitzgerald's right off of the route we were going to take. With five stars, why not give it a try? Could not have made a better decision, might've been one of the best ones on the trip. We had the rooster and the bacon wrap. They gave us sampling sides of the mac & cheese and the loaded potato casserole. We also ordered the pickles. Everything was so, so good. The homemade herb buttermilk dressing with the bacon wrap was perfecto. Even more importantly, they were all so friendly and nice. The head chef greeted us the second we walked in the door, made sure we understood how to be comfortable and how to order. His mother who works with him was as friendly as could possibly be, and came out and talk to us for quite a while. All in all it was a fabulous lunch. Highly recommend it. read more
