I am almost surprised at myself for giving them a 4. I tend to rant about places that don't cook burgers to order so I am really diverging here... But the reason is that this is really a fast food joint without a drive thru. For a fast food burger, I don't think it gets much better than this, In N' Out would be the only contender (sorry Burgerville, it's still thin and flavorless). The burger meat is juicy and as tasty as a medium well done piece of meat can be. I like how they do the toppings. The fries. You love em or... well I guess you don't love em. I don't really love em but they're just not my style. I'll have a couple of a shared bag if I'm in a group so it's not like they're inedible, just... not the crispy happy piece of potato I prefer. I love Five Guys. It's a good burger, and I love the fries. So why only one star? The service at this location seems to be hit or miss. Tonight, we stopped in and one of their employees started taking our order. The manager, however and for some unknown reason, came over in a huff, waived off the employee and apologized "for the trouble." The only trouble I saw was how rude you were to each of your employees. Your management style is abrasive and condescending. We love Five Guys, but we won't be back to this location. read more

I am not a huge burger fan, so was not exactly thrilled when my husband suggested we check out Five Guys Burgers and Fries. I mean, with the word "burgers" in the name, I assumed this was going to be a typical hamburger joint. How wrong I was. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they did have a hot dog on the menu, which, being a huge hot dog fan, I decided to try. I ordered it with bacon and cheese, my hubby ordered a regular burger (two patties), and we shared a small order of fries (which was HUGE). Let me tell you, I am always on the search of a really good hot dog, and I think Five Guys has one of the very best in Portland. Juicy and delicious. The bacon is actually nice, thick bacon strips, rather than a few little bacon bits sprinkled on the hot dog. I believe the cheese is American...not my favorite, but it melts nicely and overall, the bacon cheese hot dog is really, really good. My husband really enjoyed his burger, and the myriad of toppings to choose from...particularly the mushrooms, which many restaurants charge extra for. The menu is very spartan...not even a milkshake to go with those burgers and fries. But it seems having such a small menu helps them focus on making the few items they offer really, really good. Pretty much the choices are: burger with one patty, burger with two patties, hot dog, large fries, small fries (available salted or with a cajun seasoning) and maybe there is one veggie option...and sodas. From my memory, I believe that's about it. All the potatoes used for the french fries are locally (Northwest) grown. There is a white board by the registers that announces where today's potatoes come from). They are fried in peanut oil, and still have the skins on them. Very good fries! Although, the Cajun ones are a bit too spicy for my own liking. The short of it is to skip the burgers and stick with the fries. The burgers are marginally better than other fast food joints. They do not compare to a real sit down restaurant or one you would make yourself. You just don't make a big burger by stacking two paltry well-done patties. Finally an east coast burger joint in Orygun! I feel that this Beaverton location is better than the West Linn one. Either way both are good. The burgers are unique and the meat is super JUICY. It all melts away in your mouth and before you know it you're wondering where your burger went. Or maybe I just eat too fast. The fries are some of the best I have ever had at a burger joint. I'd say they are better than In & Out fries. They use peanut oil and if you get the fries at the right time they have the perfect crispness. Be careful though...the smallest sized fries portion is BIG, it can easily feed 2 people. Also free peanuts is a plus, eat them while waiting in line and after you order before you get your food. The fries are pretty good but come on---their burgers are just plain old things that anyone could cook. I rate them just a step above McDonalds small, plain burger, which is the worst burger in the food world. There's something happening down at 5-Guys popping up in Oregon like the checkerboard decor that lines the namesake restaurants. That stuff is magic. Heart stopping, artery clogging, wondrous burger bliss. If I didn't know any better they took a time machine and snatched up the burger joint straight from Fast Times At Ridgemont High. The burger kid can now become the neighborhood celebrity again. The only real choice here is what kind of toppings do you want on your burger. You're getting beef or french fries and probably both, the easiest answer is you want everything. The latter eludes to all the toppings that come standard like grilled onions, pickle, tomato, mushrooms, mayo, mustard, ketchup and all the fixins. That doesn't even include option free sides like BBQ sauce, A1, or hot sauce. Take your pick, because this is all you've got to consider at 5G. Maybe the tougher choice is Bacon or not to Bacon? Single Patty or Double heart stopper? It's alll good. A quick impression is that none of this is organic or local, and you know what I don't care. It's a guilty pleasure. Back in the day when fast food chains were serving real french fries and burgers they were still serving industrial meat and didn't know any better. Okay, so we know the real deal and they still serve corn fed meat. This is a GUILTY pleasure, a late night rendezvous with colonic catastrophe written all over it. Speaking of the FRIES! That time machine extends beyond pop-culture back to what places in town used to serve. Fresh Cut fries. Okay, I don't really know if they're fresh cut or if those big giant bag of "fresh" fries they line the dining room with are actually pre-cut with the skin on, but they're amazingly good. Incredibly convincing all warm and hot in a brown paper bag and they want to give you these fries. I ordered the regular, which is the small, and got it to go with my Bacon burger. I watched as they prepared 3 orders ahead a me at the end of the line. Step 1. Fill fry cup. Step 2. Add foil wrapped burger to bag Step 3. Dump a serious helping of remaining french fries into bag and top with a napkin. In your burger dreams, we all have those right, it's the common sense of finishing an order. On the drive home there was the perfect amount of fries to pick without seeming like I had eaten the whole serving. brilliant. As my heart slogs to keep up with my typing now, I'll clear the grease from my fingers and just say that this is a special treat. Oddly enough the diners seem to know that. Here is this joint where you definitely do NOT eat there every day without consequence and yet nearly everyone in the building was in rather decent shape. The place was packed and there wasn't one slothic person in the building. Everyone carefully calculated by my internal judging monologue was old school European fat at best. Which if you don't know means that they were all slender with the tiniest bit of baby fat. Not too many people had six packs under their jackets, but no one, not one single person was going to be able to audition for the biggest loser. Well, maybe if they had just begun their scheme of weight gain prior to the show. Euro-fat for short. What I'm getting at is most people it seemed takes Five Guys Burgers and Fries in stride. Eat it moderately, enjoy it like a rare wine, raw blowfish, or street vendor eggs in Thailand and you'll have proof that guilty pleasures don't have to cost an arm and a leg. I help run a site and page called Cheeseburger Aficionado. I have been all over and 5 Guys is a pretty good burger. As far as the In N Out comparison goes, I worked at In N Out for years when I was younger. You folks raving about how good their processed frozen boredom is, keep it. If I mentioned some of the stuff I have seen in that kitchen, you would be booking your doctors appointment now. In N Out is not that great. Get over it. 5 Guys is actual , handground patties. You can see it being made before you. It's not the best burger i have had in my travels. However, it's simple and consistently good. P.S. In N Out uses "rinsed out" 52 Gallon garbage cans for their canned, processed sauces...after they have been used. Enjoy! read more

What I got when I ordered should be named "THE NEVER ENDING BAG OF FOOD". Granted, I did go all out and spent nearly $12, but the amount of food was ridiculous. The large fries are served in a big cup. There were more "bag fries" than in the full cup. I actually got about 2 1/2 cups of fries. Remember when you could order "buckets" of fries at McDonalds? I got more fries all together with my order here than a "bucket" of fries. They were thick fries too, which were neat for a change. To top things off, they have malt vinegar available, following in the footsteps of restaurants like McMenamins. I would have liked more flavoring on the fries if it hadn't been for the vinegar. I poured that all over the fries, added some salt, and shook up the cup. Booom! The burger was awesome as well. I got the Double Cheeseburger and was thrilled to select my toppings. At most burger joints, I'll ask for no mayo twice and still know there's a 30% chance my order will be messed up. Finally, fast food with ultimate customizability. The burger was huge but easy to eat, and it tasted great. The cheese was awesome as well. The clincher may have been the free jalapenos, which were spicy and plentiful on the massive burger. Next time I will certainly get A1 sauce on my burger as well. The wait really wasn't so bad despite the crowd of people there. The peanuts available to munch on while waiting were salted and spiced very nicely. You crack the peanut shells and throw them on the floor, much like in a Roadhouse Grill. Of course, because of the massive amount of food served, I had leftovers despite my massive eating ability. I had to finish up later, which meant that I got to enjoy the meal at two different times in the same day!! This may be a good place to eat out before going to a movie with the family or playing video games with the friends. Get ready to go veg out and enter full comatose mode. This is a smart restaurant. They apparently have taken the best elements of other restaurants and merged them together. It is way better than In-N-Out with their nasty sauce that they make in garbage cans, that's for sure. Are use the online ordering system to purchase a little cheeseburger or a regular cheeseburger and a regular fries. I got to this location and they didn't have my order anywhere. They think it got mixed up with another person which is fine, so I proceeded to order again and waited for about 10 to 15 minutes. My guy called me over and didn't verify my meal, so I didn't even check because I thought things were good. This is a simple burger place that reminds me of my favorite SoCali fast food places. Very much a suburb haven for families, parties for local high school athletes, cheap dates of established couples and very much the working class burger place in a middle class neighborhood with huge servings and very little attitude. Its kind of a "guy" place as well....atmosphere is secondary to serving size, taste & value for the money [note most of the positive reviews so far are from men]. Regarding attitude, in fact the help is perpetually "up" and scream "5 at the door" when 5 new customers walk in. Its big, its greasy, its clean (fortunately) and not for regular consumption (like multiple visits per week) because you'll drive our cardiologist nuts! A note on the "happy talk" other reviewers below are overly upset about.... I'm not big on forced corporate "upness" either, but you can get that anywhere from Jamba Juice to Starbucks and its just "the way it is." Especially during a near-Depression where working class young people who are fortunate enough to get these jobs will do just about anything to keep them (12.5% unemployment in PDX on top of a huge underemployed population...jobs are impossible to find). I suggest be cool, relax, and realize these folks are trying desperately to keep their jobs! Final comment on atmosphere I'm not a big fan of the musical choice....its exclusionary. I'd rather hear some Isley Brother's "Go For Your Guns", Mother's Finest, Funkadelic or some Rufus mixed in with my Pink Floyd, Steve Miller Band or Cheap Trick because as kids this is what our "sounds" were like...we were fluid and moved back and forth alot so, they might pick a less exclusionary musical choice to make many more of us feel "at home." Now onto the food.... I always order the cheese burger and if I've been working out lots I go for the double burger. Everything is fresh from burger to condiments and cooked while you wait. Condiment bar is always clean as is the bathroom and while you wait there open boxes with roasted and salted peanuts in a shell for you to munch on. I guess this is proof that they use peanut oil? Also I usually order fries...and thats the big story here...the fries are really, really, really good. When my partner and I go together we split an order of large fries and have enough to take home as a snack! Served in a cup thrown in a bag, these huge things have the skin still on them and are distinctly "anti-Big chain" in that they are clearly made In-N-Out style fresh and without too many preservatives (i.e. Supersize me & the McDonalds fries that never ever die!). They provide malt vinegar which can be poured onto the fries ala authentic British fish-n-ships; makes me fond of the one good eating experience I had as a child living in England! These fries are incredibly good, unforgettable and the reason you come back! The burgers are pretty darn good, but I would not say that they are the best I've ever had. However, as a fast food product it is high end and, thankfully, not that expensive! It is very nice that the condiments are fresh and this adds to the quality of the burger-eating experience...real mushrooms, fresh lettuce and tomatoes, bacon that isn't overly processed etc. Overall a solid eating experience and definitely an example of a somewhat higher end working class burger joint and a clean place to boot! I'm not sure what some of the other reviewers expect at a place like this, but if they like In-N-Out Burgers in California this is very much the same thing with bigger servings! Made a mobile order. The app said they my food was going to be ready at 9pm. I arrive after the ready time to not see my food. I was asked three times what my name was. Then they tried to give me someone else's food. The manager said she was going to search for my order on a computer in the back room. I waited and watched the manager make milkshakes for 20 minutes. I watched walk in orders getting fulfilled. After that I left and called the customer service line to receive a refund. The customer service representative was not remorseful at all. He made it seem like it was my fault. After a week of waiting for my refund, I sent a detailed complaint online. Shortly after I only received a partial refund. I had to call customer service once again. They didn't even read my online complaint, as customer service representative said that they assumed I received my food. i went to this place after hearing many good things about it, so I had very high expectations. The good parts: * The place is spacious and kept clean * The fries are huge and delicious * All toppings are free (even onions, jalapeños and mushrooms, which are sometimes charged extra at other places) * I love the ordering system in which you start with the plain burger and you specify every topping that you want on it, instead of asking/guessing what they'll put on it and asking them to exclude what you don't like * The variety of sodas is very good and there's free refills * They wrap the burger in a way that you can actually unwrap and eat. Loved it. * They put a sticker on the burger wrapper with a number so you can easily figure out which burger is whose (number indicates the order in which you ordered) The sad parts: * The bun was really soggy, and not because it was left to soak. Many people say that Five guys burgers and fries is comparable to in-n-out. Sorry guys, I think that they taste completely different. Both are fresh, no doubt, but I'd have to say that in n out wins by a long shot, if we were to compare the cheese burgers. I mean, i like that five guys offers cajun fries and free peanuts, but it comes at a cost. The "free" extra ingredients they offer is built into the price. The burgers were more expensive than in-n-out and in my opinion, not as tasty. Don't get me wrong, the burgers were good, and I'd definitely come here again, but i've had better. Oh, and the service here was phenomenal. Maybe it's cause I'm from orange county and everyone here is super mean and fake, but the people in oregon are really genuinely nice. I'm a bit torn.. I didn't like the cheeseburger.. The bun got way too soggy and it just wasn't satisfying me the way good burgers do. But I do like the "little cheeseburger" though. I think that one has the perfect meat:bun:condiments:lettuce ratio. I really don't like their fries. I always order them because who eats a burger without fries? But they are so damn big and limp! The fries are better cajunized I must admit though. The interior reminds me a bit of in n out. And I hear there's a huge debate over Five Guys vs In n Out on Offtopic.com. I love Five Guys! This is a place to go for a really good fast food hamburger. It's along the same lines as an In and Out with a few modifications. The menu is limited - burgers, fries, hot dogs. They cook the burgers fresh to order and give you lots of topping choices. The fries come in cajun or regular - I like the regular fries and would only order a large size if you were feeding a family of 5 or more. The ambience is unique. They call out the number in your party when you walk in the door and your cashier calls out the number of burger patties necessary to fulfill your order while you are still at the register. The restaurant is sterile feeling with a red and white theme, with the only decor being quotes from their restaurant reviews printed on signs hanging from the ceiling on the walls and in the windows. Expect a line if you are there during lunch or dinner rush, but don't worry they move pretty quickly. Expect to wait about 10 minutes to get your food from the time you order. My husband and I have been so stoked to try this place. Friends are always commenting on how awesome the burgers are, that they're the best they've ever tasted. Everytime we drive by, it's packed. Today was our first experience here and overall, it was good. The prices are fair and the restaurant was mostly clean. They also have a good amount of seating. When we got there, I was reading all of the signs on the walls about all of their excellent ratings and how amazing the burgers were: "the best!" While waiting for our order, I said to my husband, "I hope the burgers live up to all of this talk and posters on the walls..." Sadly, we weren't overly impressed. Sure the burgers were good, but definitely not to die for, as so many people put it. I wasn't a fan of the fries; they had a sweet taste to them, yet very potato-y. An odd combo, I must say. The name of the restaurant says it all....burgers and fries. I went there for the first time today. The sign above the register said "we cook well done and juicy" I would say that I agree the patty was nice and juicy, but it was FAR from well done...more like medium (see posted picture). The regular size fries were big enough to share and cooked just right. I would probably visit again if i was in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get here again.
