Outrageous prices with a tip jar for bad food. I travel all over Michigan every year both high and low. One of the ways I test a new restaurant out is by how good they can make a burger. It sounds like it should be simple but unfortunately it is not. This is proven by the failures I have come across. And this place is suppose to be all about burgers. The Five Guys burger had barely any flavor. Use some type of seasoning. Maybe even a touch more salt. Perhaps find a beef with a better flavor profile. The grease went straight through the bun. Watch for excessive grease when pulling it off the griddle (come on!). I paid $11 for this? The fries are okay but the potato display bags and idea of freshness does nothing to make them spectacular. The skins left on is a perk for me so that was nice. Unfortunately for the cost and what you get, I will never eat here again. I'll take a Culver's burger over this any day. How many stars is "meh? This place isn't terrible but its not earth shatteringly good either. Lunch lines are long, the wait for your food is even longer, and when you get your order, its in a grease soaked, brown paper bag and some cheap, rough napkins thrown in. Decor is no-frills, red and white, retro diner. Without knowing the companies history, I imagine this place could've been started as a to-go lunch spot for construction workers or other manual laborers needing quick, heavy, hearty meals. And the burgers are just that- heavy and hearty. Fries are thick cut and heavily salted. I had a single (small size) burger with grilled onions, mustard, tomato, and catsup on it. Above average burgers, toppings and fries. The first thing you should be warned about is definitely the price. It's up there and I think it comes down to whether or not you like this food enough to pay for it. A friend and I got burgers, an order of fries and drinks for twenty bucks. In their defense, their food is probably worth what they charge but at the same time you could get a full meal somewhere at a good restaurant instead of here. My major issue is the portion sizes. It seems like they could charge less for smaller food. I always get the small fry and never finish it. While they're generous with portions, it sucks to pay so much for it. I am so happy that Five Guys has finally come to GR!! I have been a fan for awhile now. Would make the trip to East Lansing now and then as a treat. I don't go out to this area of GR much so I won't wear out my love for Five Guys but I sure do love them! So, Five guys is what it is, it's a chain, get over it. It's not the best burger, but it's the best burger you can get on this side of town, maybe someone should work on that. We go there at least once a week because of that. The service is about as fast as you can expect from a place cooking to order. The burgers are always fresh and greasy, topped any way you like it, with more toppings to choose from than your average pizza place. Most people will want to order a "little" burger, unless your usual at the place next door is a double quarter pounder, in which case, go ahead, have the regular burgers. The fries, they're one of their signature items, but I'm not a huge fan, they're fresh cut and not par fried, so they don't travel well at all. But they're done the way they're supposed to be, just not my thing. By the time I get back with lunch they're soggy. So, my advice it to skip them if you're taking your food to go, unless you like limp fries. read more

I personally love burgers especially with bacon! They make great burgers that are always so filling. A better than average greasy burger, mediocre fries, and several dirty tables doesn't justify the high price. I've eaten at the Five Guys in Grandville twice now, the first time shortly after it opened up, and again this afternoon for lunch. The burger was good each time, but I can't past the greasiness of the fries and the price is over the top. Yeah, it's great that you give me a heaping amount of your fries, so much that they overflow into your brown paper sack, leaving dark grease stains all over the bottom of the bag. Two burgers, two fries, and two drinks - $25. That's absurd. Being as it was a Saturday afternoon just after 1pm, I was expecting it to be very busy. On the contrary, there were a handful of customers, but no where near what I would expect for a Saturday around lunchtime. Probably some of the most authentic burgers and fries around West MI; I recommend. However I have a few quarrels: it is fairly pricey for the food here (although the fries, even a tiny, are seemingly unending), and the wait can be daunting at times. I can't knock the wait because they don't even throw your patties on the grill until you order. I compare this to the In-N-Out burgers from California and it barely keeps up. I went to 5 Guys with 2 friends. I thought my burger (a Bacon Cheeseburger with heavy grilled onions and BBQ sauce) was very good, just greasy. The fries were also good, too salty though, and they give you a ton of them. Next time a small fry will do. One of my friends thought the burger was too dry, but I didn't think so. It's not gourmet, but you should know that - it's fast good fast food, certainly better then their burger competitors (McDonald's, BK, Smashburger). The fries are given in large quantities. Finally somebody figured it out. Five Guys, or Smashburger? Both chains are going for the same market niche, and so on a trip to GR this last week, we tried both, and took some notes. First of all, they are both good burgers, but different. FG was definitely the heavier and greasier of the two, and had a lot more options for toppings. SB had a better bun, and was more 'balanced' in flavors. Sure, you can order your SB with lots of stuff, but their menu is set up for standard combinations, like the 'Olive Burger' or the 'BBQ/Bacon burger.' These pre-selected combinations have already been tweaked for flavor and balance of toppings. Whereas, FG is up to the consumer. If you want 12 items on your burger, you can get it, whether it tastes good or not. When I go to FG, I'm always trying different combinations, in order to find the one that works for me. Second of all, French Fries are quite different. FG offers thicker fries, and plenty of them, with a Cajun seasoning if you want it. We found their fries to be bland, salty, albeit plentiful. The cajun seasoning isn't particularly spicy. SB's fries are of the thin variety, with a rosemary sprinkling. They also have sweet potato fries, that we didn't try. We found SB fries to be lighter and more pleasant to consume. Third of all, we felt differently after eating both meals (on two consecutive days). The SB wasn't so gut busting filling, and felt lighter and healthier. The FG was definitely the belly bomb, especially if you order the 'regular' variety (2 patties), as opposed to the 'little' size, which is plenty. I order mine with fried onions and fried mushrooms, so it gets heavy. Top it off with an always huge, order of fries, and you're dragging out the door. Fourth, the FG burger comes to you wrapped, which means it gets steamed somewhat, depending on how long it takes for you can rip it open and put your face in it. SB is served tableside in an open basket. The SB egg bun is a good choice, and will serve you well. Now, sometimes I WANT a FG burger! Yes, greasy, heavy, and waddle out the door to find a corner somewhere to digest. But sometimes I enjoy SB, especially with my wife, who prefers a saner diet. Take your pick. I'm just glad that we have both options in GR, for whatever burger mood you are in. read more

Not sure why thy place is so popular. The fries were soggy, my burger was made wrong, and the service was slow. I watched the burger get made relatively quickly, but it took forever just to dish the fries. It is not like the fries were hot & fresh; they tasted like they been sitting around far too long.
