One thing that's cool about this spot is that it's open until 2:00AM--yeah you heard that right! Big backs have a new late night home in central San Diego! Anyways, I ordered the single-patty SmokeShack burger combo with regular fries and a large Diet Coke. The staff member who brought me the food asked if wanted sauces and happily obliged my request for their signature Shake Shack sauce and ranch. The food showed up looking very tasty and well-presented. The fries kick In-N-Out's butt any day, though that's a pretty low bar to set if we're being honest. The burger was a little greasy, but it was super flavorful and tasted like pretty high-quality meat. I liked this a lot more than In-N-Out--sincerely. One downside is the ranch. It's kind of not that ranch-y to me. I think it's lacking dill and a bit too heavy on the mayo. The house sauce shreds In-N-Out spread though. The other primary downside of this place is the price tag. It's debatable whether $20 for this plate is justified, but in a world where a Big Mac meal costs about $14 after tax, I guess it's fine.

I was having a hard time with customizing my burger. So I ordered from the front. (So much easier). If you're a regular the kiosks are probably very quick & convenient but for a rookie - no thanks! I had the Smoke Shack with bacon and Onion Rings. Food was good, staff were nice but honestly thought the prices were high. So maybe I'm not ordering the right thing, and I'm not getting it. Anyone have any suggestions for my next time?

Actually took most of it to go, and poured the remaining sauce on the plate on top -- it was soooo much better two hours later with the moisture being absorbed!!! Margarita pitcher is worth it if you are getting two - three margs on happy hour. For the queso dip (in enchilada photo), enchiladas, and tres leches on restaurant week was $30. The tax was $1.50. My total purchase today was $9.25. I had to wait at least 30 minutes later until my order number 109 was called to the front counter today. There was non stop walk in customers coming into this California Burrito Restaurant at the lunch hour between 12:30 AM to 2:30 PM today. Their majority of their customers were of Mexican descent and I saw only 3 Black People placing their orders with Caesar today. I was the only Asian person ordering from this California Burrito Restaurant this afternoon. I also noticed 2 Nurses picking up their orders today who work for Sharp Memorial Hospital today. This man and woman nurse were of Caucasian descent. It's interesting for me to get to know the population of people who are living nearby this Starling Drive location. Even by the time I got home, the chicken and fries still had a nice crunch to them. Massive WHOLE wings! I've not seen wings this big in a long time. Well seasoned, crunchy skin, and cooked to perfection. Unique halal flavor blend as well. Looks like they have daily specials and my 6pc could have easily fed 3 people. Such a steal for $16. The fiance turned me on to this chain as it's gotten rave reviews from all the foodie nerds who work with him, so we decided to give it a shot. Now he and I are lovers of In and Out burgers and I can say this place is a step up. In and Out just gives simple no nonsense burgers and what they pass on as a grilled cheese is just weird to me (its a burger-less burger, nothing more, but still good). Here at Five Guys, it is a bit more expensive but not nearly as much as say Smashburger or Burger Lounge for the same quality and quantity of food. In and Out doesn't give you enough, but the price makes up for it. Five Guys has way more variety than the others aforementioned...and you can pick any combination you like on your burgers. The burgers are juicy, thick, huge and meaty-yumminess. The buns hold up under scrutiny and can pack the punch the burgers give. The toppings are all of quality. They also have many veggie choices here as well and you also can hot dogs here that are of excellent quality (better than Sonic IMHO, thus better than Wiener-schnitzel). The fries, Cajun and five guys style are yummy and they give you a mess of them. One order is usually enough for two people and the are medium thick, perfect for those who like too much potato or too much oil on their fries. Ordering at Five Guys is ingenious. First of all, order online people! You can order online at any of their locations and when you get there its ready to buy and go. The soda machines are amazing....some 7-11s and Am/Pms are doing this concept, but Five Guys has more variety and selection. Of course the fiance loves this. I'm cool with Iced Tea so whatever, but nice to know the options exist. Their website is also extremely easy to navigate for easy ordering, so take advantage. Because of this we've been in and out in less than 5 minutes. I'd rather do that then spend 15 minutes in the In and Out line no matter where you go. The extra bucks you spend are well worth saving on the gas in the drive thru at In and Out for sure. Have you seen gas prices lately, yeesh! So Five Guys - Kudos! My only gripe about the place is that it doesn't have to cost $20 for 2 burgers, 2 drinks and a fries, despite how much it fills you up. But I'd rather pay the $20 here, than say pay $35 at Smashburger or Burger Lounge or have my car idle wasting $5/gallon gasoline since in the In and Out line forever....so I guess you pick your battles. If Five Guys were a little cheaper, they'd be 5 star worthy, because they it would be an insane value. Right now its a decent value by comparison. As far as where they place at the price range (accommodating for meal, drink, tax and tip) its middle of the road between 1 dollar sign and 2, so for all intensive purposes Ill put it at 2 dollar signs in WORST CASE SCENARIO, but know its at the very LOW end of that scale. Now as for this location. The service is average and inconsistent here, sometimes you get a nice professional person and sometimes you get someone rude and parking is not as good, but being in Hillcrest its expected. For this, it loses another star. The lot its in is always full and street parking is a nightmare. Sometimes you luck out and sometimes you don't. Sometimes decent and its easy to get to if you are in the area. But if you happen to be in the area, its alright...especially if you are carrying the tubes with you to order online with, lol. read more

I'm not sure I "get" this place: The burgers and fries are *okay*, but be prepared to shell out the big bucks for them. My friend and I went in recently and our total order was: 2 double cheese burgers, 1 order of large fries and 2 drinks. And the total came to an amazingly high 25 bucks. And that's without any ambiance to speak of, without having your food brought out to you (you have to pick it up when called - and it's all thrown into a giant brown paper bag regardless of whether it's "for here" or "to go") and with having to go get your own drinks from the "cool" drink dispenser (a "cool" drink dispenser does not a restaurant make). The service is LOUSY here. My last visit here - which was, I've decided, my last visit here for all eternity - the dude taking our orders was downright surly. And when I finally got my order and took my burger out of the requisite brown bag it had been angrily flung into, the outside of the bun was smeared with mayo - a condiment I expressly did not order, especially on the OUTSIDE of the bun. The other employees (besides the charming and delightful cash register dude) all appeared to be either really pissed-off or just completely indifferent. Not fun to be around, trust me. I'm much happier with In-N-Out Burger, where the prices are much lower and the burgers and fries are better and they actually serve you your food on a tray. With a smile. read more

Didn't eat all day and caught this place before it closed. The staff was really cool and didn't give me looks or anything for dropping in on them right before they are closing. I had never been to this place but it was actually pretty good! The pricing was a little much for fast food but the give you really generous portions and literally probably a whole bag of fries. Watch out heart attack! He just kidding I asked for my burger to be well done and it was no red or anything the bread was warm and fresh along with the vegetables I added grilled onions sautéed mushrooms tomatoes lettuce mustard you know burger stuff. It was really tasty I knew I shouldn't eat such a big meal before I went to bed but this week has been crazy on me with catching meals on time and with how good this burger was I ate the whole thing along with probably the whole bag of fries ha. So this place is pretty good they even get the potatoes from other states and have them fresh cut, the fries really where good even me getting there so late you would think oil was bad or the fries would be soggy but they where crispy and fresh and oily but not in a bad way. read more

I've been going to five guys for years all over the country. i love their french fries and the extra few they add into the bag. I went to the five guys in hillcrest and had a very unprofessional experience by the crew. Like usual I ordered same thing: burger, large fries, and soda. the first time I came here they gave me a medium fries with maybe two or three extra fried. Remember I ordered a large fry. I did not complain. So a month later I went to the store again, and once again they gave me the medium cup, not the large cup with very little extra fried. I concluded it was probably because I did not tip them a dollar or so. so I go to the one in pb and the one in Kearny mesa to double check on if I may be wrong about the cup size of the fries. sure enough, pb and Kearny mesa did everything correct just like they do all over the country. so five guys is great.......just don't go to the hillcrest one. read more

Overall solid food. Five guys is a relatively consistent chain for me, and this location is no exception. Burgers are very tasty, fries are always spilling into the bag and staining it with grease. Free peanuts is always a plus. One thing I've noticed for this location though is that the customer service is always exceptionally friendly, it's always nice to walk in and be greeted warmly. read more

This is the best Five Guys location. I love the modern soda machines, where you can mix and match from a ton of options in the touch screen menu. Literally customer service you would receive at a 5 star restaurant. Food: The burgers are so delicious. Everything you expect a smash burger to taste like. Quality ingredients, buttery and rich. I don't recommend getting the mac, we were confused and thought it was a side and not a topping. It was pretty much burnt cheese. The taters were too seasoned too, it was a bit overwhelming. I like that they also serve beer and seltzers, perfect for pairing with your burger The restaurant: I love the open space, lots of seating. The staff are pretty friendly and the food arrived pretty quickly. Now the problem that I ran into was when I got my grilled chicken I bit into a rubbery piece of the meat. The person in charge had me wait for a Cook supervisor and they came out and just apologized. They did send me away with a side of fries and another sandwich. Overall, the strange taste of a rubbery thing in my grilled chicken made me drop stars. They eventually just took the sandwich away.
