Wait times are longer than other branches, the cook quality worse (generally over cooked and tastes burnt) and it has put me off having Five Guys again. Came for a late night dinner at 9pm since Chik-fil-A was closed. Placed order and came out to a little under $100. We handed the cashier a $100 bill and asked her if it was ok since most places don't take large bills, but since it was close to the amount, she just said she would have to have her manager check the bill. He comes back with the bill we handed her and said it's fake because the face turned brown!! I didn't see any brown, it was yellow! This color blind MF checked three more of our bills and said "Nope, this is all fake" We pulled out this cash from our bank to have for the weekend, so we knew where the bills came from. But the manager, Rick, told me "yeah, the bank gives out fake bills too!" We still paid for our food with card, but if this is an on going issue, they should invest in counterfeit machines and not accuse people of trying to pass counterfeit bills. Or maybe he saw that we were Hispanic, and the first thought in his head is that we made the money ‍ I wouldn't have made such a big deal out of this, but he made us look like fools! read more

Wow! Bacon cheese hot dog never tasted so good! They slice the hot dog- it's perfect! All the toppings are included. I had mushrooms, grilled onions, relish on the side with light mustard and keThey have self serve peanuts...I wish they would serve them..peoples hands gross me out. I still ate the peanuts. They should call this place 15 guys burgers and fries cause that's how many guys it takes to run it. I don't understand the hype though. I tried both the burger and the hot dog and I got nothin. I tried the fries and they were soft and tasted very potatoey, if that makes sense. Too potatoey for me. The hot dog was nothing special. They split it so it didn't have any snap. We need a good hot dog place. The burger was juicy, but I couldn't taste any flavor other than fat. One thing that was kind of weird was that they built the burger with stuff under the patty. Not something I am used to. It all just seemed like I could do better at home, you know what I mean? Other places like the Habit or In-N-Out I cannot duplicate easily, but this place I could. It needs to have a better handle other than overcharging for a burger or hot dog and giving unlimited toppings and too many soggy fries. It's a loud cafeteria like restaurant and you'll probably feel a little like cattle moving through chutes. I'd like the peanuts more if they'd have beer. Finally, they put everything into a paper bag that soaks up the grease, so make sure to get plenty of napkins if you're taking that bag anywhere, like your car. I hate writing bad reviews but in this case it is more of a warning for other customers.. My boyfriend and I have gotten food poisoning here more than once.. and THE worst food poisoning I have really ever experienced. I have seen the cashier touch the money then the food, people in the kitchen sneezing and not covering, and things like that more often than should be acceptable. This is sad, however, because their soda machine is like a video game, the all you can eat peanuts is really fun, and the burgers look and taste pretty dang good. I'm not sure if it is a staff cleanliness problem or a meat curing problem but if your stomach is sensitive to food poisoning and bacterias maybe don't stop by here anytime soon. read more

Well, I bought the 5 guys hype. My brother and I decided to drive the 30 miles to Thousand Oaks (The 405 looked horrible to Carson) to try the infamous 5 guys burgers. The burgers were very tasty- fresh ingredients, lots of options, filling. HOWEVER, they were ALMOST as good as when my brother makes them at home and the bread was.. eh. (When I go out to eat, I want it to taste like I CAN'T make it at home...) I was totally disappointed in the French Fries. We got the regular and the Cajun fries.. and.. we both thought they were average. The Cajun fries just had some of Tony Chachere's Original Creole Seasoning on it. I mean.. really? The thing that turned this place into a hell hole was the kid who was announcing the numbers of the orders. Not only was his mouth molesting and swallowing the microphone, he was SCREAMING in all of our ears. In addition to the pillage of my ear drums, he was annoying. He thought he was hilarious. For example, "NUMBER 91! NUMBER 91! THIS IS NOT AN EMERGENCY! BUT IT IS ONE LESS ONE THAN 9-1-1!" Uh, okay lame-ass... shut up. If I owned this place, I would fire that imbecile pronto. He alone, was reason for us to get the hell out of there. People were rolling their eyes and leaving quickly. This is my opinion: You pay over $6.00 for a bacon cheeseburger and $3.00 for french fries. That is more than some places I know that use PRIME meat. Let me tell you exactly what you get when you go to Five Guys Burgers & Fries: When you walk in there are a few things that will be immediately apparent. First, you will be notice the atmosphere. It's a cafeteria style seating arrangement that can get incredibly chaotic during the lunch rush. Second, your eyes will invariably be drawn to all of the articles, quotes, and clippings of Five Guys telling you how amazing they are. For me, that's a red flag. If the restaurant's only discernable artistic "theme" consists entirely of self-generated hype, it's almost guaranteed not to live up to expectations. Let me direct your attention to the menu. If you are ordering a burger, don't be mislead. Five Guys has two sections for burgers: Their regular burgers and their "little" burgers. Just so we are clear, the little burgers are regular size hamburgers and the regular size burgers are actually double the meat. I find that misleading and a bit annoying. When your food arrives you will notice that Five Guys wastes absolutely no effort on presentation. Everything is unceremoniously tossed together in a greasy brown paper bag. It doesn't matter if you order "for here" or "to go", you still get the paper bag treatment. Open it up and you will notice that your fries are shoved into a paper drink cup. They are brownish and soggy. No crisp golden fries here. Your burger will be wrapped in tinfoil. Unwrap it and it looks as if it was seriously man-handled. It will be squished and mashed, and you can easily make out several finger-sized dents in the bun. The cheese will not be melted, and everything will look as if it was thrown together in the laziest, sloppiest manner possible. So, Five Guys doesn't concern themselves with atmosphere or presentation, those things clearly don't matter as much as how the food tastes, so dig in. The flavors are okay, but not amazing. This is easily a meal you could make at home. There is simply nothing special or noteworthy about it. It's okay, but nothing special. I guess if I was to sum up this review in a sentence that would be it. Five Guys: it's okay, but nothing special. So, what did it cost? You would expect that the money saved on omitting clean presentation and comfortable atmosphere would allow Five Guys to offer their food fairly inexpensively. Not the case. A "little" burger, small fries, and small drink is going to cost you about ten bucks. So, where do they rate? Five Guys wastes so much effort trying to compare themselves to In-N-Out that they might as well stick a couple of palm trees in their parking lot. Unfortunately, all the things that make In-N-Out great are the same things Five Guys falls short on. If we are using In-N-Out as a baseline for good fast food at great prices, then Five Guys doesn't match up at all. However, if you want an okay burger that's a bit overpriced and slopped together in the laziest manner possible, give them a go. read more

It's a love it or hate it kind of place. I came here on the weekend and the lunch rush was slam packed. There isn't any ambiance to speak of, tile floors, peanut shells, tables that needed to be wiped down badly, glaring lights and a herd of people lined up. Bun is doughy and it disinegrated as time went on. Fries are very average. The ingredients did taste fresh, and the toppings were plentiful. I especially appreciated the thick sliced pickles. Well after all the hype we finally decided to stop by tonight. This place is the "Emperors New Clothes", those that say its great are sheeple, afraid to let everyone know the Emperor is naked. Too much hype for little substance. Food was a MAJOR disappointment. They claim meat is juicy and well-done. Guess what, can't have it both ways. Well-done means you cook the juices out. Burgers were small and messy, though the add-ons (i.e. lettuce, tomatoes, etc) were fresh. Lots of fries but very soggy (McDonalds still the top dog in this category). Whoever said this food was better than In-N-Out has it all wrong. For $10/person, you will do much better at Carl's, BK and the Habit. Recently Zagat's rated this the best burger in America, dethroning In 'n' Out's long reign as king. Anxious to try "the best burger", I hopped in my car and came down to Five Guys having no prior knowledge other than that it's a place. The whole look of the restaurant is cheap red-and-white decor with stock font choices and checkerboard signage... it didn't look like a fancy place that housed such an honor (although in it's defense, In 'n' Out looks cheap, too). Your burger comes plain, and you add the toppings you want (12 are free, cheese and bacon are extra). There are no value meals, so you must add fries and cola. While you wait you can scoop up all the peanuts you want out of a cardboard box. This actually makes a lot of sense, as it seems the turn-around time for an order is quite a long (greater than 10 minutes). The fries are make in peanut oil, which gives them an interesting taste, a decent crisp, and a little bit of sogginess for extra goodness. They come in a cup and then pour out into the bag with an extra scoop. They are quite delicious, however it appears ketchup is your only dipping option for use condiment people. The burger is a default double-patty, which I had no idea. Hot, with melted cheese, and delicious grilled onion, it really does present itself well. The chose-your-own toppings made a really custom burger that was quite tasty. Now the scrutiny. This is not the best burger. Then again, I don't think In 'n' Out has the best burger, either. It was certainly delicious, but it reminded me very much of The Habit's burger, except with a poorer presentation and overall not as good of a taste. Plus Five Guys left a ding in my wallet -- I could have saved $4 going to Habit. It's certainly good -- no arguing that -- and certainly better than your common drive-thru variety that makes this burger a hit outside California. But this might as well obscure with the rest of good choices us spoiled Californians have for burger choices. So if you find yourself in the area, come down and try something new. But don't venture out here in the hopes that Zagat's is correct in crowning Five Guys the best burger in all the nation. So finally got around to trying out Five Guys and wasn't really impressed. I was thinking the burgers here would be really good based on all the accolades that are posted on the walls. It's your standard ground chuck with all the fixin's - I ended up getting the cheeseburger "all the way." GF ordered the cheese veggie sandwich, also all the way. The cheeseburger was a double patty grilled well done - I prefer a little pink in the middle of my burgers. It lacked serious flavor and reminded me of a cross between a Whopper and any of the burgers from Carl's Jr. In N Out has much better tasting burgers and fries than this place. The cheese veggie sandwich was pretty good but GF prefers the grilled cheese, animal style at In N Out. The only saving grace was the fact the cheese veggie sandwich had grilled (albeit soggy in my opinion) mushrooms. When I opened up my burger, the bun was basically smashed into the burger (they're wrapped in foil). The only good thing about the burgers is that they're decently sized. I'd rather have quality (flavor) than quantity. We also ordered both the Five Guys and Cajun style fries. The Five Guys were plain, salted thick cut fries. The Cajun fries had seasoned salt. The fries were soggy and greazy; they're served in brown paper bags, which soaks up all the grease. The fries weren't cooked properly - they ended up just soaking up the grease. I'd suggest at least soaking the cut potatoes in cold water and then frying them twice to get the crunch. You fry them at a lower temp the first time, let them cool a bit and then fry them again at a higher temp. Just frying them straight off the bat soaks up the grease with very little crunch. On top of that, there are NO shakes at this joint! What kind of a burger place doesn't serve shakes? After eating here, it was too greazy for me. Food coma galore! I'll stick to The Counter, Westside Tavern, Father's Office, Fatburger, In N Out, The Habit, Red Robin, or Islands for burgers. A lot of hype for a mediocre burger. Just finished up lunch and I went with a regular cheeseburger and Cajun fries. Free toppings included: grilled onions, grilled shrooms, ketchup, mustard, and jalapenos. I think my friend nailed it... "It tastes like a double cheeseburger from Burger King." He's right... I noticed a shocking similarity. "Free toppings" is like saying a Big Mac is a burger that comes with "FREE" special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, and a 3-part sesame seed bun. Seeing Five Guys passing through Thousand Oaks was plenty tempting, as I had a good memory of eating there when I visited Connecticut. Unfortunately, the execution and taste was nowhere even close to my first taste of it on the East Coast... I had a cheeseburger with cajun fries. Burger was small, super gooey, and tasteless. Fries weren't even cooked all the way, and lacked flavor even on that. The result... feeling ill that night and into the next morning. Don't even bother. If you want to compare this to In-N-Out, you are crazy as even the great version of CT I had was quite different. And In-N-Out still wins hands down. Don't waste your money on something of poor quality and execution. It could be just this particular location, so I can't comment on the brand as a whole... but this location just sucks. They also list the calories right on the menu, you can have a good conscious sucking down a 800+ calorie burger with your 300+ calorie fries and 200+ calorie drink. Have fun. read more

This is an above average fast food joint that's not worth the price. A burger, fries, and drink will set you back a solid $14, and that's just not okay. I appreciate that it was tasty--definitely a step up (or two steps up) from Carl's Jr., Burger King, or McDonalds--but if you have a specialty burger joint in the area, I would recommend going there before this place. Here's the thing: the beef patty is juicier and is actually real food compared to the burgers at your typical fast food place. Another thing that sets them apart is that they give you interesting options for toppings. For example, I got jalapenos, grilled onions, and bell pepper on my burger. Also the fries were actually pretty good. They actually seemed like real potatoes and had the right amount of crispiness to them. They also give you peanuts (with shells) to hold you over while you wait. When I went here, we had just done an hour long hike at Griffith Park, and I was very hungry. So I appreciated the free peanuts. The fact that you actually have to break open the shell to get at them makes it seem less unhealthy. The truth is that the peanuts probably aren't doing you any favors when you taken them together with your massive burger, fries, and soda meal. We were excited about a new burger place in town and this place looked promising. Super busy, line to the door, tons of great reviews plastered on the walls... great sign, right? I ordered a regular burger with a few toppings and the boyfriend ordered a cheese burger. I'll concede that the burger tasted good, the entire thing combined to make a large mushy meat sandwich. Not really the texture I go for in food. Bun was squooshy and fell apart. And the fries? Could possibly be the worst fries I've had in years.
