Our server Skylar (sp.) was incredible. We were in Boston as part of a week-long New England vacation and she was the best server we encountered on our entire trip from Maine through to Beantown. The Tavern itself was excellent. Some outside seating added to the atmosphere and the food was excellent. Crab cake appetizer was solid, tasty and not full of breadcrumbs as many tend to be. Slow service, inexperienced kitchen, mediocre food, unbalanced sangria and no parking. Came here with a fairly large party but kept our orders pretty simple. Two draft beers and a pitcher of sangria. Beers were slow to out and the sangria tasted like diluted sugar water with a splash of sweet red wine. Food's up next: three burgers, one turkey sandwich, one fish and chips, two eggplant parmesans. I came here with a friend on a Saturday night at 6:45 pm. Thankfully they had one table available. I'd recommend making a reservation just to be safe, especially for weekend dinner and/or if you have a larger party. I ordered the salmon, and my friend got the chicken pesto pizza. Came in for a drink to wait out the rain and am pleasantly surprised by their extensive beer (40 on Tap!) and drink offerings, and they have a bunch of delicious vegan and vegetarian options too!! I hate to leave this review, as I live in the South End and have loved Five Horse Tavern for years. Unfortunately tonight I ordered a salad with chicken that was very undercooked (see the picture). I'm generally very empathetic when a restaurant makes a mistake, but under-cooking chicken is the one mistake that can't be made, as it can lead to customers getting very sick. I didn't notice at first because the outside was charred, and the first few bites tasted a little juicier than normal, but looked white. But then I got to the middle and noticed it was entirely pink. The waitress immediately got the manager, who was apologetic, made me a new meal, and didn't charge me for the salad. The only way the chicken could be that charred on the outside and raw on the inside is if it wasn't defrosted. You simply can't make that mistake at a restaurant. read more

We had a nice Sunday brunch outside at five horses. They offer a great mimosa flight ($20) and they make a pretty darn good expresso martini! The fried chicken with biscuits and gravy was delicious! The corn bread is out of this world delicious . Everything we got was great, service was friendly.

We were a party of 6 on a Sunday night. We received the brunch special menu rather than the dinner special menu (which we didn't realize until we asked for the dessert menu and saw the dinner specials). Wanted to start off with patatas braves. They were out. Two in our party wanted the hanger steak... they were out. Two in our party did not get their order. The waiter never came to ask how everything was. Had to call someone over to tell them we were still waiting for 2 orders. After dinner we asked for a Skillet Cookie dessert and THEY WERE OUT OF THAT TOO! Three things they were out of!! The chicken wings that were ordered "gluten free" were put in the oven just to warm up. All other food was just fair. Though our server was pleasant it was very slow. There are a lot of great things about Five Horses Tavern. The mimosa flight was innovative and fun to order. There were four - one similar to your classic mimosa but more acidic which I liked, a lime ish flavored one which I thought was just okay, a fresh strawberries one which I liked as much as the classic, and a red one that I literally could not figure out what it was but I did not like it. $18 for a mimosa flight wasn't a terrible flight given that a mimosa typically goes for $10. My boyfriend ordered the Southern Chicken (2 large biscuits, 2 fried chicken and 2 eggs over gravy). The biscuits were tasty, but so dense and I couldn't even eat more than 1/3 of one. Eggs and gravy were decent. The fried chicken, however, was the most conflicting piece for me. The outside was so well seasoned and tasty, but because there is a lot of chicken, it was fairly dry - even the gravy was not enough to offset the dryness. I ordered the Breakfast Club (essentially chicken club with waffles instead of toast). The Breakfast Club comes with a side and we got tater tots for that, then ordered another larger side of beef & pork belly hash. The Breakfast Club was very difficult to eat (see pictures) but the hot sauce on there stood out the most for me. The weirdest concept though is to put the hot sauce all the way on the top of the club and the chicken was all the way on the bottom. They would have been great together. The tater tots were spiced well and the beef and pork belly hash had such a great texture - but I did not taste much potato and it was salty. Probably would not come back for brunch, but would like to come for the beer flights as I saw many beers on tap at the bar! read more

Sweet name and even better food! Running off of fumes and a terrible hangover, my friends and I stopped in for brunch. I got a mimosa and a red sangria - both were delicious but the sangria gives you more bang for the buck. It was very unique - kind of like a cold apple pie in a glass (yes very diff yet delicious flavor!) with heavy notes of cinnamon that landed perfectly -- so much so In fact that after one taste, the whole table followed suit and ordered one! For my meal I got the fried chicken salad w a side of potatoes. Though it would be basic but somehow managed to rock my world! The chicken was crispy yet light and extremely flavorful. The picked onions paired perfectly and the sauce on it was minimal but managed to add the best tangy punch. Staff was very accommodating of our request to be seated near television to watch the Stanley cup playoffs. Although this is not a sports bar and the sound was off, we enjoyed watching the game during our meal. Son ordered hand breaded chicken strips and a soft pretzel. $10 for a single pretzel seems like a lot, although it was very tasty as were both dips. They were out of the homemade spring pea soup, So I settled for the Brussels sprouts and had them hold the pork belly. Server advised to me that the brussel sprout side dish was shredded versus whole sprouts in the appetizer. So I paid $12 for 5 large sprouts with some mushrooms and pickled apples. Good, but not worth! Chicken strips were perfect, can't say we have ever had better. Slightly spicy, tender and perfectly fried. Homemade ranch, awesome. It's unfortunate how I've seen this place go down. Two years ago this place was very favorable. Between the good food, service and the nice ambience, it was a great place to go. I don't know if it's a new manager or new owner or maybe just unreliable workers. But the service has severely declined. The food shows up cold to the table. and the ambience has really gone down. I used to recommend this place all the time. I work in the medical field so I come out here for work. I will no longer will send or go to this place of business any longer. I came recently, and was severely disappointed with the service, the food and music., The choice of music they decided to play on a on a Saturday early afternoon wasn't the best choice. It's a shame. I stopped in for dinner with some friends. Although this was my first time going to the South End location, I've been to the Somerville restaurant a few times. I started off with ordering a beer on draft. Their selection is pretty extensive, and I ended up getting a Fiddlehead. I was very disappointed to find my pint glass only 60% full. Did they spill half of it on the way over or drink it? I wanted to mix it up and got a veggie burger. The tomato marmalade made this veggie burger a must-try. I ordered the greens as my one side, but it was all wilted and brown lettuce. Gross. The server was super friendly, but not very fast. Our drinks were frequently empty for more than 10 minutes at a time (not helped by the skimpy pours). Overall, one star for the extensive beer menu and two stars for the delicious veggie burger. Without the burger, this would've been a one-star experience... that is not on par with how the Somerville location operates. read more

So awesome finding a spot in Boston that had labeled Gluten Free options on the menu. I had a really amazing waitress that ensured I would not get cross contaminated. I wanted to order their Tots appetizer, but as it's fried in the same fryer as all the food containing gluten, she let me know not to order that and it shouldn't be labeled gluten free on their menu. I really appreciate that as someone with Celiac disease. I had a pitcher of their red sangria, and it was fantastic. The restaurant is literally a U shape so can be tight and busy especially at the bar. The food came really fast I would say in less than 15 minutes. We ordered the pork belly burrito with tater tots, BBQ pulled pork sandwich and KFCGH fried chicken. All were good but the service was okay. The burrito was a little spicy which overpowered the meat. We couldn't finish the BBQ pull pork sandwich so we asked to take it to go and the server threw it away by accident, so they compensated by giving us another sandwich. read more

I bought the living social deal, so we decided to get the KFCGH and the roasted beet pizza. Highlight of this dish was definitely the PORK BELLY MAC & CHEESE! There were chunks of meat in every single bite and it was just so flavorful and rich and creamy MMM. The fried chicken itself was very crispy and light. The skin wasn't very thick, which made it easier to eat I think. It was nicely flavored and not too oily or greasy, which I really appreciate. The jalapeno mashed potatoes were just whatevs for me. It wasn't spicy at all, even when I ate the pieces of jalapeno. At $17, I think it's an ok deal, but it does come with a lot of food. and mannn that mac and cheese. droool Roasted beet pizza: I wasn't a huge fan of this, but my brother liked it. I had given this place 5 stars before and deservedly so but ugh, what a disappoint to have come here on my birthday weekend. The wait for our food was dreadful, over an hour. Then to top it off, we were quite disappointed that our server didn't even say so much as a quick "Happy Birthday", never mind a candle after being told that we had a birthday at our table. Their saving grace here for the extra star was the food. Here's the good and meh: Calamari - This was just okay and nothing special. We were there yesterday and they forgot to put our food order in and after an hour they said the kitchen was closed When the manager came he was so rude and was not accommodating. The food and drinks here are great. The atmosphere is everything you'd want in a gastropub/tavern. I just can't justify coming here anymore because they force a mandatory 4% hospitality fee on their bills. That fee came during covid and I was okay paying it when the restaurant was legally prevented from filling seats at tables. They don't have those restrictions anymore, so the fee is unnecessary. The service was friendly but I found it odd that who we had kept changing throughout the night. I enjoyed the 90 Mile sandwich, it was prepared like a panini.
