The food and drinks here are great. The atmosphere is everything you'd want in a gastropub/tavern. I just can't justify coming here anymore because they force a mandatory 4% hospitality fee on their bills. That fee came during covid and I was okay paying it when the restaurant was legally prevented from filling seats at tables. They don't have those restrictions anymore, so the fee is unnecessary. Came here with my boyfriend during my birthday trip to Boston after reading mostly good reviews on Yelp. It took 20 minutes to get a table, but we were able to get a nice table outside on a beautiful day and a view of the sunset. My boyfriend ordered the beer flight ($15) and I a peach pale ale ($6.50). We also ordered the bottomless cupcakes - chocolate cupcakes filled with cream cheese filling and paired with passion fruit coulis ($8). Sounds delicious right? Wrong. I was in the mood for dessert and the cupcakes we received were nowhere near "filled" with any sort of filling. They were empty, small, and the coulis was just some type of drizzle on the plate. The concept of this dessert could've been great, but this place failed to deliver. My pale ale was really good, but when the waitress brought the 4 beer flight out to our table, she managed to SPILL IT ALL OVER MY BOYFRIEND. So she apologizes and gets a towel, comes back and wipes down the table while my boyfriend is standing there, soaked, with nothing to wipe down. She then proceeds to offer him the towel she JUST USED to wipe the table down and says (I kid you not) that the towel is clean and dry and he can use it to wipe himself down if he'd like. My boyfriend handled the situation well but the waitress handled her mistake pretty badly. She brought out the flight again and placed it on the table the same exact way she did the first time. Given, our table was slanted because it was outside but she put the flight tray parallel to the slant so of course it's going to fall! Basic physics!!! Anyway, we asked for the manager and he gladly comped the beer flight, but the waitress was pretty measly and unaware. She was a bit rude too when we tried to make light of the situation... This is THE place for an indulgent and unique brunch. I came around 11am with a pal and there wasn't a long wait. I had so much trouble choosing between three different options on the menu - a fried chicken and biscuit number, a pulled pork Benedict, and a brunch pizza with a baked egg and hollandaise sauce. I mean, all of these sounded sooo drool-worthy! In the end, I went for the pulled pork Benny and have no regrets. The pork was tender with some crispy bits and the eggs were large and yolky. What more could I ask for? My friend got the burger and also enjoyed it. We left incredibly stuffed but also very happy. In addition, our server was super friendly and gave some good guidance on what to order. The ambience is like your classic old timer tavern, and we got a bar seat facing the window to do a bit of people watching as we munched. I've been to the Somerville location a couple times and enjoyed it, so I was excited to try the South End location with my coworkers. Boy were we all veryy disappointed. First of all, they didn't have any normal bourbon or whiskey at the bar- only sweet flavored whiskey. And no normal vodka or Tito's- only infused vodka. So if you're looking to drink anything other than wine or beer don't go here. 2) the food wasn't as good as the other location. We got the tator tots special that came with some kind of Korean sauce on top. In my opinion it didn't go well together and just plain tots would have been better. Then we tried two pizzas. One was the potato head pizza and the other the Brie and Apple pizza. The Brie and Apple pizza was so sweet that I didn't want more than a few bites. The potato pizza we were all super excited about, but was disappointed that the potato's were chips- was excepting more of a soft potato. Also the sauce tasted like ketchup. And the dough less than mediocre Very confused on how two locations can have totally different experiences. Also we made reservations. We observed another table returned their corn bread because it was undercooked (the manager who carried it up from kitchen emphasized to the the waiter it was "undercooked" with air quotes to the waiter. Had a really great time here. I went a few months ago with my boyfriend for lunch and we loved our dishes. I ordered the curry entree and a veggie taco as an appetizer - both were delicious! My boyfriend ordered the cheeseburger with tater tots and the tots were incredible! Burger was also juicy and well seasoned. We both ordered the Garden Mule and they were great. Not too strong, and the cucumber and basil were great additions. They have wonderful gluten free and vegetarian options, which I always appreciate in a restaurant. I came in for brunch with a friend (and energetic little child in tow) and was immediately greeted by smiling servers and hosts. The restaurant was bustling with the early brunch crowd sipping the mimosa flight (4 tumblers of mimosas flavored 4 different juices), or enjoying the Bloody Mary bar. I opted for a beer flight. Since it was a chilly morning, I went for their darker ales and porters. My waitress was wonderfully knowledgeable and pointed me to 4 excellent selections from Vermont, Mass, New York and California (did I mention they have an excellent selection). Each were tasty, rich, malty, spiced and seasonal! They also were all def over 7% ABV....sooo....post lunch happiness was guaranteed. As others have noted, the brunch dishes are hearty (read heavy) but delicious. We got some fresh apple-cinnamon donuts for the kiddo. They came with a sugar dipping sauce that ended up mostly on her face. I couldn't deny myself the Heart Surgeon (beef cubes, pork belly cubes, potato hash, eggs (runny) and crispy onions). At first glance, the skillet seemed small, but by the time I was done woofing down that hash, I was in full meat sweats and reaching for my Lipatore! My friend got the Chilaquiles, a plate overflowing with chicken guac, cheese, tortilla strips and two eggs. It was a perfect brunch dish and she could not finish it. The restaurant filled to the brim by the time we were done eating with small children darting down the walk ways, parents at their tails. This is a great restaurant choice for big groups, small catch-ups, family time or just to taste your way around the beer menu. Five Horses is really close by and a great place to go when you don't want to ponder for hours where to go. I'd recommend making a reservation on the weekends through OpenTable to avoid wait times. During the summer, they have a patio and is great for people watching and enjoying a nice pitcher of sangria. I'm giving four stars as the last two times (of the hundreds visited) there wasn't great service and food was cold. However, this was truly the first and second time this has happened in the past five years I've been going here. We ordered the oxtail chili, cornbread and roasted chicken. All of which normally is fantastic but served room temperature/semi-cold this time around. I'd recommend the Mac n cheese, pizzas and kale salad for when you go in! Burger was fine--cooked medium rather than medium rare (we ordered medium rare). Liked the homemade pickles on it--other toppings nothing that interesting. Kale salad was kale, dressing and breadcrumbs and some cheese. The breadcrumbs were soggy, so not a good substitute for croutons. No tomatoes, no anchovies, no pop of flavor. We thought it was great. Made reservation on "Open Table" for six at 5:30. Place was packed with after work happy hour revelers but they had saved a nice table for us. Menu a little odd but plenty of regular things for the less adventurous. Lots of different beers, nice wine list, even a hard to find Austrian wine, all very reasonably priced. I had a personal sized pizza with apples, puréed Arugula, Brie cheese and candied walnuts. For a small pizza it was really filling. Five had pizzas of one kind or another, one had fried chicken. All happy. Service incredible. I don't know how they did so well in such a crowded environment. Early on place was very loud but as a few people left and the hoards thinned out things calmed down. Roomy, clean, generic restrooms were on the same floor as the restaurant and bar. Nice touch! Referring to a negative review as recently as 6 weeks ago, I'm sad to see you had such a bad experience. We loved it. Staff member spilled water on one of our party and they couldn't have been more gracious. Brought over deserts for the table. We felt apology was sufficient. We live right around the corner from this nice more upscale tavern. We ate here once in the fall and just recently for Valentine's Day. We really enjoyed the food and I think the beer selection is really nice. Also great service both times and relaxed atmosphere. We had the calamari special which was very tasty. Then I ordered the Mac and cheese on the waitress's recommendation, with pulled pork. My wife had the burger which I ate half of. Overall we enjoyed both meals but I wasn't blown away by the Mac and cheese. It was heavy on the cheese and light on the pork. I would've preferred a better balance but I still enjoyed it. The burger was very delicious and well prepared. The beer selection (see pics) was solid and they charge about $3 more for a trillium than you buy in a can so I gotta say that ain't bad. This is a great place if you're looking for a certain kind of brunch - heavy, southern, fried. The prices are very affordable for how much food you get, but be warned - there are very few "light" or "healthy eating" dishes. You can certainly order mesclun greens or the black bean hash as sides, but most of the food is sausage/fried chicken/bacon/delicious cheddar grits. I actually only ate the cheddar grits side for breakfast and was completely full, even though I'd also ordered the Heart Surgeon. Be warned, the heart surgeon is EXTREMELY heavy, with no vegetables in sight. It was delicious the next day, but was so big and heavy that I made it into 2 meals. We also ordered the donut holes for the table, which were perfectly fried but not too heavy. And we've also heard great things about the drinks although we didn't partake in them. My wife & I had a 6:30 reservation thinking we would have plenty of time for a 8pm event at Symphony Hall, a 10 minute walk away. Seated right away, it took 10 or so minutes to place our order with an overworked and very harried server. Another 10 or so minutes passed before our drinks arrived. After sitting there until 7:20(!), and seeing later arrivals already eating or getting their checks, the waiter came over apologizing repeatedly that he forgot to submit our food order! He said he would talk to the manager about getting our food out quickly. We asked him to do the best he could but that we were now in a big hurry. The food arrived around 7:30 and when presented the bill, all our items were listed. The waiter said we should talk to the manager, who wanted all items paid for despite our long wait due to the server's screwup. I asked that the manager come to our table. After a few minutes wait, the manager, Dominic, came over. I told him that while we we quite unhappy about how long it took to get our meals, I was even more upset that Dominic did not even approach us until we asked to see him, and that not even our drinks were comped. His response was that he was surprised that we were as upset as we were! Perhaps this is the way Dominic treats all of the customers. My wife and I dine out often, very rarely complain about food/service and do not nitpick about things hoping that it will result in a free drink or meal. In this case, however, the way Dominic handled our issues and the arrogant attitude that he had when he saw how unhappy we were, forces me to give him and the restaurant a HUGE thumbs down even though the food was good. Dominic needs to bus tables and do other tasks so that he can learn how the restaurant business runs and how customers should be treated. We will NEVER return to Five Horses Tavern in the South End, solely because of their poor, inept management. read more
