I have been going to five star since it was at its former location on Hargett St. I love the food there. My favorite is always the General TSOs chicken. The chicken is cooked to a crispy perfection and the sauce is really flavorful. This time we got the Taiwanese Pork Belly Buns, Generals Chicken and Tom Yum soup. The pork belly buns were amazing and the generals chicken is always a hit. The Tom Yum on the other hand was SPICY! This was my first time trying it there and my last time. Apparently they make the entire batch in the morning and I'm not sure if it was just that batch or is it always this spicy. I can eat spicy but this was a bit much. They should definitely consider toning down the spice level on that soup. You can always add more but you can't take it out!! read more

I mean, the place is called Five Star... couldn't possibly be more suited for a Yelp review. And despite the fact it's current average is not 5 stars, I agree with the name, as I definitely had a 5 star experience! Bear with me, as this was several months ago, but in the process of going through my last year's photos, I saw these and realized I had not actually written a review. I immediately remembered the meal and how tasty everything was. We started off with several apps, including some soup dumplings, crab rangoons (with actual crab in them, not just cheese turnovers), and some crispy spicy garlic shrimp. All were delicious, the soup dumplings still stand out in my head as favorites. The portion on the crispy shrimp was excellent. We went family style on the dinner... beef lo mein, general tso chicken, cashew chicken, and spicy mongolian beef. That all came with a big bowl of communal rice, and we all left stuffed and satisfied. There wasn't a dish on the table we wouldn't order again. As with anything downtown, parking can be a little tricky. I was able to find free street parking about a block down, but that's all gonna be luck based. The lot behind the restaurant was totally full. Would come back next time I visit Raleigh! read more

I've been going here since I was a kid, the old location. Food has changed a little but but what mostly has changed is the portion sizes and pricing. Just went for my birthday for maybe first time in a year and spent wayyy more than last time just due to there small "family style" portions. Had dinner here after a work event - party of 4 and came in at like 8 on a Tuesday. We had to wait like 20-25 minutes but it was well worth the wait. We ordered a bunch of dim sum and it was all delicious. Their crab Rangoon actually has crab in it! It was so good. I went for my tried and true entree of spicy beef noodles and she did not disappoint once again. And tons of leftovers like always. The staff is great here and the ambiance and is perfect for a date or group dinner. Parking has become a little bit trickier with the parking lot out back being pay to park and without actual parking lines so people can park wonky sometimes. I am Chinese and I can tell you this is the worst Chinese food I have ever eaten in my life. What the f are these carrots, why is my bok choy bruised and overcooked, why is my white rice container only half full? Why is the sauce so watery? Full disclosure: We sat at the bar. Lauren made us beautiful cocktails. We got intoxicated. Nonetheless, even in a semi-inebriated state, we could tell we were having really good food. Wife had peanut noodles that were delicious. I had the 5-star generals chicken which tasted great. The chicken was a tiny bit over but it's chicken breast...that's what you get. I'm sorry I don't understand the 5 star reviews. We were so excited to try this place because so many people on Next Door recommended this restaurant. We ordered the sesame beef, heat seeker shrimp, crab rangoons and scallion pancakes. Everything was awful. The beef was as dry as beef jerky and did not have a sauce. The shrimp was not good and also did not have any sauce and the rangoons were fishy. We thought for sure they couldn't mess up the scallion pancakes but we were wrong. They were slightly burnt, hard as a rock and tasted like old grease. Even the rice was gummy. Save yourself and go somewhere else. read more

We dined at Five Star recently for the first time. As we entered the door we were greeted by Chandler and welcomed exceptionally. What a great first introduction out of the gate. We were seated in a pretty chill location and the vibe in the restaurant was super cool. Our waiter promptly came to greet us with his exuberant personality to match (what a gem), and made recommendations for the menu. I felt certain he knew what he was talking about, and he did! EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE and EXCEPTIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS by Ryan! My partner and I had the Crispy Green Beans to start. TO DIE FOR! I mean, I could have eaten these as the main course. Next we had some Crab Rangoons which I thought were an excellent choice, and the sauce was great. Next, for dinner, I got the Crispy Sesame Beef and my partner got the Crispy Sesame Chicken. We both devoured the plate, the fork, fingers, and anything withstanding that deliciousness. In the end, my partner wanted desert so I sat and watched him barely come up for air as he scarfed down Warm Chocolate cake with ice cream. While I cannot speak for the taste of it, he sure made it look like it was the best dessert he had ever had, and I believe he may have mumbled that too while still eating the cake. I will have to try it on the next visit. Overall, it was a very awesome experience, the food was great, but the service, quite frankly, in my opinion was the best part. I regularly come here now and this is definitely my casual asian restaurant of choice. You can actually come here casual or dressed up, and it's always lively inside. It's very packed on weekends, so make reservations or be prepared to wait. They also have a DJ who plays really great mixes! Last night's mixes were great. They have this cute painted private room for large parties if you want to celebrate something. Also don't pay for parking because they validate it inside. My favorite dish here is actually the chicken fried rice. It's one of my favorite fried rice dishes if not my number one and I get it every time. I also ask for a side of yum yum sauce and pour it over. Second place goes to the heat seeker shrimp. I love that they have a featured menu list that is constantly changing with food and drinks. I will say their drinks are amazing. I've tried so many different cocktails in cute cups and garnishes from this place alone and I'm always excited to see what's featured. Last night's featured drink was a matcha lychee margarita and we loved it. From the featured food menu, we got red curry chicken and chili garlic noodles. It was our first time visiting five star and I was not disappointed. Pros: the ambiance was very nice, the server helped us with any questions we had and was knowledgable of the menu (which doesn't always happen), and the portions of food was well beyond a one person serving. That is important to know if you don't want to order too much food like we did. But it made great leftovers so I wasn't upset. I loved the chicken lettuce wraps! It was probably my favorite dish, they are a bit spicy which worked for me but my partner did not enjoy that. I would also recommend the sesame chicken, to me it tasted more like general tso chicken than the actual general 5 star dish. Cons: the crab rangoons were awful, I try not to send food back but I genuinely could not eat them. There was a strong artificial taste and it seemed like the cream cheese was off as well. I just didn't like the overall flavor of them. The portions are a pro and con because like I said we both ordered entrees thinking it was for one person but they were definitely served family style, that would've been something we would like to know before ordering. Five star has been one of our favorite Raleigh restaurants for almost 21 years. When they moved to the current (much more comfortable) location we were suspect as to whether the restaurant would remain true to what we knew and enjoyed, it did. The food is fantastic, the accommodations for gluten friendly are exceptional and trustworthy, and the service and ambiance are great. Crab Rangoons- could definitely use more filling. Basically wonton chips Crispy Sesame Chicken- needed more sauce, bland without it Lo Mein- the highlight of the meal. You could really taste the smoky flavor from the wok and it really elevated the dish. Could do without the broccoli though. I'm from philly, and i am Asian. I know authentic Asian food. This is by far one of the lower end restaurants that claim to have quality familiar Asian food. We ordered the filet mignon with kimchi fried rice. The steak was practically mooing at me. I am an avid steak lover and know what cook to get on steaks for different cuts. This steak was overwhelmingly undercooked, i might as well take a bite off an actual cow. I also ordered the spicy noodle with beef. It looked kind of appetizing, but i don't know if it was because I haven't eaten since 3PM and it is now 11PM. The noodles had a little kick (which I didn't mind) but the noodles were sweet. It tasted like there was honey drenching the noodles. I asked the waiter for salt, but the salt they gave me was so large and coarse it reminded me of the salt you put on the roads to melt snow. I couldn't eat the noodles anymore. We also were seated at the VERY back of the restaurant, away down the people and alone. I felt like we were being segregated from all the "hipster" people who were sitting out front (which wasn't many and there were clearly seats). The service wasn't bad. The waiter was sweet and knowledgeable. But she took quite some time to get back to us. We were waiting for a solid 7 minutes before we could ask her for a box/check. The only upside of this place is how long it took the food to come out. But it is also questionable, is the food fresh? Visiting Raleigh. C'mon, how could you not try Chinese? Came across this based on "closest" I base my Chinese experience on "Hot and sour soup". This is my curtain control taste guide. So of course, I ordered : Hot and sour soup : chicken chow mein Two fairly staple, but complex dishes I did order it take out. So my hotel is 6 minutes away. Got to my room, eager to chow down! Soup! Hmm, container was kinda cool (er, not that kind, the not so warm kind). Interesting I thought. Opened it. Hmmm, the usual welcoming aroma didn't waft. Color, darkish brown! Hmm, I thought, too much soy sauce? Well, wasn't hot, but thought, I'd taste as is. Ugh! Ever seen a bottle pickled Dill spears? Now, have you ever drank that mixture that's pickled in? Now add soy sauce to it, leave in some dill pickles, and then add some random mushroom. That is what that was. I've never ever, not been able to finish a hot and sour soup. I even reheated (full disclosure, in a microwave). Nah. Not happening! (Again, I think I saw baby dill pickles and mushrooms, but not sure what any off the other ingredients were) Next up: Chicken Chow Mein. Slightly better, but very one dimensional. In my opinion, I believe someone here equates Chinese cooking with Soy Sauce. The first few bites were okay, but as I had more, it had nothing more to give. Sadly I was disappointed, and still hungry. Reached for an apple! Good night 5 Star. Tonight, only 2 stars were shining! PS.
