A very nice find in the South Loop. My chicken tacos tasted like the kind of street tacos you get in Latin countries (or in the Southwest.) Good, quality ingredients and wonderful heat! I like 'em spicy. The chips are very crunchy and a bit greasy, not my personal preference, but my tacos were great. Definitely not my favorite Mexican place, but it's local, and the food is consistently slightly above average. I'm satisfied, but not overly delighted. Let's just say it's good enough that I keep coming back here. But would I ever go out of my way to come here? Uh, no. More than anything I like the convenience/utility of the place - it's close by, easy take-out, dining in is casual and fun, cheap drink specials, cute but not over-the-top ambiance, and moderate amount of culture. Loved this place! Found it through Yelp when I was downtown Chicago for the triathlon this past August. The place is small, you can dine it or take it home. My friend and I grabbed some chips and salsa (which was hot!) and ordered a steak sandwich. The girl who took my order knew everything menu and could recommend certain dishes to try which was helpful. We also ordered horchata, a cinnamon rice milk drink that I have never had before and it was delicious! I could drink that all day! There was a ton of different types of mexican food to choose from. So...I guess third time's the charm. Went back today with friends for their delicious $3 dollar margaritas and ended up getting the skirt steak sandwich. I've come in for their special taco Tuesday tacos (they discount a special taco creation every Tuesday) and usually find them disgusting. Big portions, so stars for that. Other than that, the flavor of carnitas in the burrito was completely overwhelmed by the other ingredients. The poblano tamal had very little poblano in it and tasted like I was just eating a big wad of masa. The salsa verde was a watery mess that didn't taste like much. To their credit, the salsa rojo was big and smoky, and I could have eaten that all day. Also, it took 'em 20 minutes to get me a burrito and a tamal when it wasn't particularly busy. So, lots of things working against the place. But God bless them for being a mom and pop in a world of Bar Louie and Subway. So, give 'em a shot. Maybe you'll like them more than I did. read more

This place was alright. I ordered two tamales and a side of rice and beans, to go. The tamales were dried out (I guess they didn't put enough water when they steamed them), and for a second I thought they forgot my rice on the side order because when i opened the container all i saw were beans. I realized later that the rice was on the bottom, which I was okay with since I like mixing them but I'm sure someone else would find annoying. The tamales were pretty good for what wasn't completely dried out and the side was good but not great. Cheap too, which as a college student I appreciate, but the fact that almost all of my tamales were inedible makes me second guess this place. I'm not too sure I'll be back. read more

The concept is great (worth 1 star).....a casual spot that caters to take out, but has tables and serves margaritas for those looking to dine in. After a Saturday night of overindulgence, all I wanted when I woke up at noon was some good mexican to take back to my couch. I gave Flacos a try. I ordered a chicken burrito, and chips and salsa. Worst $11 I've ever spent on food (maybe not THE worst, but top 5 for sure). The chicken was bone dry, like so overdone that I had to throw out some crispy pieces. There was shredded cheese in the burrito, but it was cold. Actually the burrito was room temp. The chips are good (worth 1 star) but could use some salt. The salsa was terrible. It was like dipping chips in tomato paste mixed with water. It had absolutely no flavor, whatsoever. I was really hoping for a good mexican place by my new apartment, but this is not it. Maybe I'd give it another try and order differently, but if you mess up salsa, is there really any hope?? read more

Just had lunch at Flaco's Tacos and it was pretty good. I had the mini burritos meal that comes with three mini burritos and rice & beans. You can pick the meat filling for all three burritos. The chicken and steak mini burritos were pretty bland and didn't have much flavor but the pork burrito was good, perhaps because it comes with a red sauce. The only other taco joint I've eaten at in the Loop is La Concina and I have to say Flaco's has much better quality when it comes to the food. read more

There aren't too many restaurants to choose from when it comes to the S. Loop. I waited daily for this place to open. Once it did, I was a bit disappointed. They are a bit overpriced, but it'll do the deed. I always get a steak taco and a pork tamale. It's good, but not the best. Their burrito and guac are a bit bland. I would recommend it if you need your Mexcian fill for the day. BUT..I highly recommend their desserts!! The owner said that they bake it themselves. My boyfriend lives in the Donohue building right next door to Flacos Tacos. He loves to call this place, "an extension of my kitchen." Needless to say - we're regulars. I regularly crave chips & salsa so I'm there at least once a week for that. I'm a big fan of the Taco Salad, Chicken Burritos, Chicken Nachos, and Carrot Cake. I didn't enjoy the Fish Taco very much. My only problem with Flaco's Tacos is trying to keep from going here every single day for lunch. There are several great options in the neighborhood, but for price, food, quickness, and convenience, Flaco's beats them all. Some of my co-workers have started making fun of me for going to Flaco's three or four times a week. I have tried almost everything on the menu, and my favorites are the poblano quesadilla (large $4.50), anything with steak (taco $2.50, burrito $6.95, large quesadilla $6), and the chicken tamales steamed in banana leaves ($2). Visiting from San Francisco where, there are no bad taquerias, I was very disappointed to find that one of the highest rated In Chicago turned out to be almost mediocre. The tacos that we ordered came with cold tortillas (a capital sin by any standard) and with meager amounts of meat. If this is a 4 star rated taqueria, then you should stay away from the rest and wait until you come to SF, where you can't go wrong. The two stars are for their decor. read more
