This place is pretty nice for a fast food place. Even the bathrooms were clean and seating were spacious. This is what I say a gourmet fast food. As I were driving back home, I wanted something quick to eat as I didn't want to go home super late (I had a 7hr drive). This showed up on yelp and had good ratings so I decided to try it out. I had ordered the half chicken half beef plate. To my surprise, it came out looking beautifully as it was neatly packed and garnished. It also tasted pretty good. The meat wasn't lacking in flavor nor was the rice overcooked or undercooked. The side salad was fine too. Would've been better with more sauce but that's ok. The portion size is also pretty large. It was more than enough to feed both my girlfriend and I. Their sauce was also good. It goes well with the meat for that extra flavor. It came out in like 5 minutes. This is a pretty good place, but I've already got a go-to rice bowl place in Kentos and it's just a few blocks away from this location. To compare the two: Chicken: Kentos wins, hands down. They use breast meat and while you'll occasionally see fat that I believe should've been trimmed, you'll get that plus dark meat and cartilage-y type pieces that should've been trimmed at the Flame Broiler. Beef: I prefer the Flame Broilers. Teriyaki (aka Magic Sauce): I think the Flame Broiler magic sauce wins. Hot Sauce: Kentos hot garlic sauce wins and it's not close at all. Price: Kentos again, more food at a cheaper price. Ambiance/Cleanliness: I'm not sure how old Kentos is, I've been going there for about 15 years and it looks every bit of it's age. It's more of a hole-in-the-wall type place that you almost feel uncomfortable staying in, but I wouldn't mind sticking around at The Flame Broiler. All in all, they're really close and I could see how someone would reasonably prefer the Flame Broiler. Me? I prefer the hot chicken bowl, so Kentos wins in every area I personally value. It's awesome having a healthy fast food option in Bakersfield now. The chicken here is actually really good but I found the veggies to be undercooked. You can tell the chicken is marinated in a good amount of sugar but I understand the food has to taste good or else this place wouldn't be around long. If you are looking for a truly healthy option I would highly recommend not using their "magic" sauce as it's basically teriyaki sauce rebranded. There is a ton of sugar and salt in this. If you're going to add the "magic" sauce than I recommend just going to Taco Bell down the street. The hot sauce they have is a better option. It tastes like Crystals which is one of my favorite brands. Packed full of salt but is sugar and calorie free. It's a little pricey when compared to other rice bowl restaurants, but it's also a higher quality product. I stopped in to the Flame Broiler on California Ave for the first time since it opened on 4/12/15. First off I may have been overcharged for my meal, although I really don't know as I wasn't given a receipt. (yes I asked for one). I was given a green salad which I didn't order but by the amount I paid I am quite sure I was charged for it. I am all for crisp vegetables, those that came with the meal were way undercooked. I was so stoked when I heard that Flame Broiler is opening up. I used to go to Flame Broiler all the time back when I was in San Diego. Anyway, Flame Broiler is not just your regular grilled chicken/beef bowl chain. I love how everything is made fresh to order and you can opt for no vegetables (I'm a bad kid who hate veggies lol). The more healthy-minded could opt for vegetables and brown rice. You can also choose for onions or no onions. If you pay a little extra, you can even do all veggies chicken bowl with no rice (I have a friend who was on a low carb diet). The portion is plentiful and inexpensive. Perfect for a hungry kid like me. For those who are wondering, the "magic sauce" is just teriyaki sauce. I like to mix the magic sauce and hot sauce together for tangy teriyakiness. I've gone back there several times since it opens to pick up lunch for myself and my coworkers and would be going there many more times in the future. The prices are fairly low and you do get a pretty good amount of meat for the price, but the actual food is just okay as far as I am concerned. If you like rice, cabbage, carrots, snap peas, broccoli, and meat, then you can have a filling meal for less than $10. I just felt that the taste was all that amazing. I like each of those things, too, but I didn't really like the magic sauce and I thought the bowl wasn't mixed very well, it was just too dry for me. All in all, if I found myself in that part of town, I would consider eating here again and trying something else on the menu (I had chicken, brown rice, vegetables and magic sauce in a bowl for my meal.) It is likely healthier than the restaurants nearby its location and is definitely less expensive than a combo at most fast food joints in town. So, it's fairly decent, I just haven't learned to appreciate it yet. I will go back and re-rate it based on that experience. On a side note, the staff didn't understand their menu well enough to explain it to me when I was there. That was frustrating as it was my first time there. Visited this location for the first time last week and I have to mention that the "Magic Sauce" did the trick for me. (I liked it) Sure I understand that there is no MSG in their chicken, but that didn't do it for me for 5 stars. YES, MSG does show signs of problems in people's bodies ETC. but did you know that Soy Sauce carries tons off this stuff, including that Magic Sauce. I don't mind much for MSG because It only effects a small percentage of the Population but if you really want me to come back, then Organics/Whole foods will do the trick. I have eaten here several times now and we have been happy with the food. It is inexpensive and quick, I think because the rice vegetables and protein is prepared ahead. The dishes are mostly rice and veggies, but that is ok to me. This healthy food is served in a clean dining area, I also see a lot of people taking food to go. We have tried all the proteins, chicken, beef, even the tofu. They are all good. The rice is fresh and fluffy, no hard crusty spots. The veggies are cooked with water, and they are not over cooked, a good thing. In the middle is a small bar for some sauces, napkins and cutlery. Tiny to go cups with lids are provided for the sauces to go. The people are nice, they are helpful and cheerful. This location is very close to a gym, lots of candy for the eyes. read more
