We made a last minute reservation for 5:30pm on a Monday. We've been to a lot of steakhouses in big cities...this rivals any one of them and beats most of them. Not only was the food great, the service was above and beyond! We were seated immediately and served bread and mini banana nut muffins. Both were incredible (we almost turned down the bread starter but loved it so much we asked for a second serving). We ordered a dry gin martini and the Peachy Keen from the cocktail menu. Both were very good. We had the wedge salad and garbage salad (both half size). Both were great but the balsamic vinaigrette was too much on the vinegar side and not the best balance. We then each had a T-bone steak, the lyonnaise potatoes and a side of broccoli. We loved it and took some to go. I had the Wish Co Cabernet with dinner which was a good pairing. We shared the cheesecake for dessert. It was so good! If this were close to home, I'd return again and again! I can't emphasize how good the service was. The atmosphere was nice and we felt welcome despite being a little underdressed as tourists who spent the day out and about. Even the bathroom were well decorated, clean and smelled nice. One of our favorite go to places, especially for special occasions. I've always been extremely impressed with the service and food until now. MY husband and I chose Flame to celebrate our 25th anniversary and was unfortunately underwhelmed. First, we were seated at a table next to the bar and the bartender was our server, which was fine, except we were waiting a lot for EVERYTHING. Greeting us, Taking our drink order, getting drink refills, ordering, everything. Bread came out so delayed that it was delivered shortly before our meal. My husband ordered the ribeye. As it was cooked perfectly, it was terribly chewy and he was only able to choke half down. We also ordered dessert, as we often do on special occasions. We had never tried the chocolate torte at this establishment and won't ever again. The torte was cold, like it had just came out of the refrigerator, and had the consistency of lumpy, gritty fudge. Also, it was not served with ice cream, as it is advertised in the menu. When we mentioned to the server that it would have been nice to have ice cream with it he said, "ya, that would have been good". Almost like he didn't know it should have come with it. I have had chocolate torte's elsewhere and it is always served warm. I don't know if they just do it differently here or someone dropped the ball. My crab leg was ok, kind of hard to screw that up though. Our server was very personable and pleasant. Ambiance was very nice. They seated us at a table with very good lighting this time, which was nice not having to get my phone out with the flashlight to see the menu, like we usually have to. This is my go to spot for a good happy hour in the red room. I love the steak tartar, some oysters, and a glass of champagne or a nice martini. So this was the best surprise of our business trip. We originally tried to go to a different restaurant downtown Springfield but found out it was closed. Because we had to scramble being tourists, this place caught our eye. Good ole reliable yelp provided great reviews for this so we tried it out. I could tell you this place is amazing, and I mean so good that I'll be dreaming about it for months, but it would be nothing compared to you trying it for yourself and hating me for not telling you sooner. Good God. If I were to die and go to Heaven after this experience, I would go willingly and fulfilled. The inside isn't great, but that was my literal only complaint. Also it took a long time to get our food, but we literally did not give two snots about the wait once we took the first bite. The bread was okay. The lobster Mac and cheese was perfectly string cheesy and served in a skillet. I literally HATE mussels and that soup served with them made me say 'mussels who'? This place is kind of expensive but it's literally worth every penny with the flavors and portions are HUGE. I got the roasted half-chicken. I was already full by that point but I ate half of the huge portion because I could not let that chicken sit there for other people to experience the beautiful display and awesome smell. I needed that all to myself. I also got the candied bacon and jalapeño mashed potatoes. From a food and drink perspective, Flame operates at a very high level. My recent visit here (11/10/21) though was just a bit disappointing because our server was a bit too casual, both in his presentation and service delivery. The evening was to celebrate a birthday (which I made clear in the comments field of my reservation request weeks earlier - its called coordination-FOH talking to BOH) and the timing of the meal left something to be desired. Oyster and appetizer plates stood way too long on the table, and our wine was opened (shaky wine service) well after the steaks had arrived. It was also quite odd when the server just drops the check on the table only a few minutes after clearing the entree plates-we look at him strangely, as if to say, "you might have asked us if we're having dessert (he did not), and if you didn't know, its a birthday, so, yes, we're definitely having dessert." We are Californians from LA... (I say this not to be pretentious, but to give context) passing through here on way to St. Louis. Really loved this spot. Both wife and I had the ribeye and were excellent. Drinks (Old Fashioned and Pineapple Mojito) and sides (creamed spinach and the jalapeno mac and cheese) were also excellent. My boyfriend and I ate here last night. This place was recommended from several of his physician fellows we also work at Cox so we decided to give it a try. The ambiance is nice, dark and romantic but lacked music (jazz would be a nice touch). We ordered two appetizers (steak tartare and salmon crab dip), which were okay. For entrees, I ordered the Ahi tuna with twice baked potato and he got the 8 oz filet mignon with lyonnaise potatoes. Both of the items were a little too salty on the outside (crust). The twice baked potato was very dry and did not taste fresh. Our favorite thing was probably the complimentary bread, as it tastes FRESH with a twist of some sweetness. In the realm of limited steak houses in Springfield Missouri, Flame sits at the top of the list. Tonight, our first visit to Flame, we were greeted by a wonderful server named Elizabeth. We sat in the lower level of Flame, kind of the spot for those without the sense to make a reservation, like us. Kind of dark, but hip, the lower level was quiet but nice. What made it really nice was Elizabeth, she was amazing. My wife and enjoyed our talks with her, she was attentive, and made the strides to go the extra mile. We had the medallions with an wedge salad to share. Salad was great, the bread and muffins were delicious. The filets were cooked to perfection, topped with delicious candied bacon. The fries were off the charts, my wife's loaded baked potato was incredible. We ended the meal with crème brûlée and it was equally scrumptious. We are definitely going back, maybe even tomorrow, hopefully Elizabeth will again be our server, who we highly recommend. I'll grant you this: Flame's dry aged ribeye has that classic dry aged ribeye taste that we all know and love. Though, I wouldn't say it was cooked to perfection. For the price paid, one would expect a perfect steak. Frankly, I've had better steaks at much lower-priced establishments. If you're going to go through the effort of dry aging meats in-house, you should at least pay the same mind to how you sear it. Relative to price, I'd almost call this a one-star experience, but you earn one additional star for in-house dry aging. It was the only thing you got right. I took my wife to Flame on our anniversary last April. Unfortunately, it was Prom night at some local school, so we shared the establishment with young know-nothings who soiled the ambiance. I won't fault the establishment for that, however. They have to take their money where they can get it. It did make it feel like an Outback Steakhouse or an Applebees, though. Not a fan of "fine dining" surrounded by other peoples' kids. Why not hide all the kiddos in the basement? Put them at the kids table where they belong. The adults are spending serious money here for a meal they might've returned for, and we don't need daddy's credit card to pay for the one-time experience. I suppose my wife and I will just have to choose a new anniversary date or forever risk dining alongside annoying prom queens. I digress. Flame's ambiance would've been disappointing for me without the teeny boppers, anyway, because I hit my head on a low ceiling getting up from my table. Who buttered up the building codes inspector to get those low ceilings approved? Nothing like date night conversations while contending with a throbbing painful knob on my head. Of course, that was upstairs in the side seating, which followed our attempt at eating in the basement. It was the end of last April, and not exactly hot out. But the basement? It felt like Hades down there, so after sweating out all my moisture within a minute at our first table, we asked to be relocated upstairs. Up the stairs, hit my head, and commence a three hour service time for steaks. Three. Hours. Let's see, you sear the steaks roughly two minutes per side... wait a minute, I must have miscalculated, because 2min+2min does not equal 180min. What the heck happened? Well, nothing like a painful bump on the head, a headache, and a three hours of listening to a bunch of young dummies loudly talking about nothing to really make a marginally prepared steak feel not quite worth $300+. Where's the value proposition? Everyone hypes this place up. Surely it's better than my awful experience, right? I'd expect more for ticket prices like these. The quality fell very short of similar chain establishments such as Flemmings or Ruth's Chris. I expect way more from an artisanal establishment such as Flame. I suppose I'll give them one more try, just in case it was an off night. Maybe I'll update this post after that - though I have my doubts. read more

The oyster batter was unbelievably delicate and scrumptious. The soup was savory and silky. Entree- I ordered the filet medallions and the cheddar jalapeño candied bacon mashed potatoes. My husband chose the ribeye and twice baked potatoes. The steaks were prepared perfectly. The mashed potatoes were sweet, hot, and savory in one bite.
