I must say, this is a very interesting find! My sister and a friend decided to meet here for lunch. We arrived right as they opened. Small place, seating is nice and spaced apart. The place was clean and the greeter was nice and welcoming. We ordered almost every thing on the menu! The grill menu (with the skewers) are only offered after 4pm on the weekdays but all day on weekend (per the waiter). We ordered the eggplant, lamb kidney, oyster, and scallop. Also ordered a couple of cold dishes: cucumber salad, and beef tendon. Very tasty and had a kick! Everything came out piping hot. Flaming Mountain Chinese Grilled Skewer Bar is on fire! Have you ever been to a Chinese grilled skewer bar?? No? Well if you ever see one, I recommend dropping whatever you're doing immediately, because if this place is any indication, WOWEE! Man oh man was this place amazing! Some of the best Chinese food I've ever had (and I've had it in NYC, SF, etc.) And my favorite experience, completely unplanned, totally random. Didn't even know about this place until just before trying, but when I read reviews, knew I had to ("I lived in China for 5 years, this is closest food I've found to that"). You know it's gonna be authentic when there's hardly any English spoken. These folks are from Northeast China, which I believe is the skewers and grilled stuff, although there definitely seemed to be a lot of Sichuan influence as well, lots and lots of those yummy, zesty peppercorns that leave your mouth all tingly in everything. Now I know I throw superlatives out a lot, but this place was truly phenomenal! Every single dish just off the charts good, absolutely bursting with flavor. Started with a couple skewers, lamb and chicken. Was gonna try lamb kidney, but they were out (lots of interesting offal on the menu). Nicely grilled, tons of cumin and other spices. But look at this oyster and scallop! Holy moly I've never seen such big ones in my life! The spicy garlic sauce was outrageous, and just loved the vermicelli noodles on the scallop. Chopsticks on shells for scale. Now there are many more exotic dishes that I look forward to trying (like pork, blood sausage, and pickled Chinese cabbage stew - I believe pickled things are a big part of NE cuisine, due to the long winters), but I didn't get too adventurous this time around, but what I did try was just incredible. The eggplants and ground pork in garlic sauce, stir-fried (spicy!) squid, French beans, and ma po tofu (def best ever) were all fabulous. Every bite of everything just smacks you in the mouth with flavor. The yeung chow fried rice was excellent as well, wonderful flavor, and the corn egg drop soup was so, so, soooo good! I love it here. You have to try the skewers. I love the beef tendon and the lamb skewers the most. I didn't expect to like the glass noodle salad but it was excellent. That sauce was transformative. May is AAPI Heritage Month, so all month I am spotlighting local Asian/Pacific Islander-owned restaurants! TL;DR: 5/5! Despite a few hiccups, it's a spot that I see myself coming to regularly. It's a new restaurant, and there might be some trouble if you don't speak Chinese. Despite that, they provided good customer service and incredible food! We move on to Chinese restaurants for my journey. Chinese restaurants have a long history in America dating back to the 1800s. The explosion of Chinese restaurants can be attributed to the Chinese Exclusion Act and Geary Act, which limited Chinese immigration, with exceptions such as those involved in education and merchants. Since people involved in the restaurant industry were considered merchants, that was a way many Chinese immigrants got into the United States. The food that they made tended to cater more towards western palates, but today, we are seeing more and more traditional, regional Chinese restaurants pop up. This one has a unique twist because they have a wide selection of grilled dishes. The restaurant is located near the Aldi on Fletcher in the same shopping plaza as Target. The interior is bright, and most of the customers involved were speaking Mandarin. I did have a few issues with placing my order because the waiter needed me to point to what I wanted. I did so and said what I wanted in English. They originally brought out the wrong order, but they did fix it. I'm guessing there is a bit of a language barrier. Hopefully, they can come up with a clear system that might help with confusion. Just be careful when placing your order in English and double check. Also be patient because this is a new establishment. They do charge a dollar for a bowl of rice, but with the increase in food prices, I understand. Apart from the grilled dishes, there are plenty of other regional family-style items. They also have a selection of foreign and domestic beer, so you can enjoy a cold one with your food. The other drinks are bottled drinks, and our water came in a styrofoam cup. It was actually lemon water and really refreshing, but I can understand if some are taken aback by that. At the end of the day, food and service matters most. They were gracious enough to fix the mix-up with the food without much trouble, and everything I ordered was amazing! This is among the best Chinese food I've had in the Tampa Bay area! My fiance loved her oyster, which she described as plump and flavorful. It was also huge! The soy braised pork belly was tender and had the right amount of fat to meat. It was everything you want in a pork belly dish. The sausage skewer was seasoned to perfection! The real winner was the Eggplant dish that I got. I forgot what it is called, but I'm gonna have to go back, show them the picture I took, and say that is what I want. I didn't want to stop eating it, and that was with that delicious pork belly on the table! Whoever the chef is that made that dish, you're the real MVP! It was slightly sweet, a little garlicky, a little spicy and savory. It was a harmonious dish that I look forward to trying again. I've been to restaurants that do only a few things very well, but this place is special because everything I had was fantastic! I hope Flaming Mountain has plenty of success. I honestly didn't know what to expect. I get there and I asked for a large table since there is 5 of us and most of the tables seems a little small. They sat us and we wait for a bit because there is only the guy up front. He took our order and we noticed that the Chinese speaking customers that came in after us got their food first. I don't know if it was something they ordered or the preferential treatment. We asked for water, that took a while to come and when it did come, there was white floating pieces of stuff in it. The food comes out, but no utensils or plates to eat with. The guy brings it 4 plates for 5 people and it took a while for that to be corrected. We asked for napkins and that took a while to come. I ordered a shrimp & peanut with vegetable dish for $15 and it had a nice amount of shrimp, mostly peanuts (which I love), and sauce that had zero flavor. I took it home and added serious hot sauce and soy sauce and it gave it some flavor. Rice costs extra (?) at a Chinese restaurant. My pot of tea to drink while I waited was $5.
