If there were a 6th star, I would use it. I made a mistake and Flam's fixed it. Big time. First, my mistake. The lock on the door from our house to our garage broke. I called a "locksmith" which had uniformly great reviews on Yelp. But not that many reviews - first mistake. The guy who showed up worked out of the back of his unbadged car, didn't present any credentials and butchered the job. Cheap parts, poor workmanship. Took 90 mins for a (at most) 20 min job, needed my physical help to do some of the mechanical bits and in other ways made me feel uncomfortable. Plus he charged me a ridiculous amount for a very simple job. His business card didn't match the Yelp company's name, and when ultimately I challenged him, his story and his on-the-phone "Boss's" story kept changing and didn't match. Obviously, lies. So now a stranger with whom I've had an unsettling experience might have the key to my house. Yikes!! When I left a bad review on Yelp, they offered me most of my money back to take it down. I agreed, but mostly because I felt so creeped out by the experience and just wanted it over and to to put these people in my rear view mirror. Lesson learned - look for lots of great reviews, even if punctuated by a few bad ones, and make sure the reviews have credible content. Not just "X was great and fixed my problem in no time". Especially for a locksmith. You need someone you can trust, who's been in the business for a good long time. Now I really needed a professional, reputable locksmith. To rekey our entire home!! So after getting some personal referrals and reviewing their many, many excellent Yelp reviews, I called Flam's to rekey our home and fix the butchered door. Lots of doors, most with three cylinders. A big job. First reassurance - although they were very professional on the phone they were extremely busy and had to call me back. Which they did. Second reassurance - while they understood the urgency of my job, they were not going to send out "some guy" just because I was anxious. We all waited until one of their very qualified, experienced, licensed technicians was available. A full day as it turns out. Worth the wait!! Julian showed up on time in a well-marked van. Showed me his license and very professionally and efficiently assessed the job, rekeyed all our locks, shook his head over the butchered door then fixed it, including replacing the cheap lock the previous guy used. Total bill a little more than what "Mr. X" charged me to replace one lock. Was in my home less time than "Mr. X" took to butcher my garage entry door. Wow. What a wonderful experience. I feel great that our home is once again secure. And now we have a "family locksmith" who has earned our business forever. read more

Fabulous service. Our grand-son locked the door to our pool storage room, and we no longer had a way in. Fortunately, a friend had raved about Flam's Lock & Key in Sherman Oaks. Their man-on-the-scene, Eric, came out to the house, fixed the problem, and didn't want to leave until he had taken care of 3 or 4 minor problems we hadn't expected to address. After all, he said, we were paying for the house-call so we might as well take advantage of his expertise. Along the way Eric chatted about his boss, remarking how nice it was to work for someone who wanted the job done the right way, not the quickest way. The nicest people you'll ever meet! I had a key made and didn't have the $2.67 to pay in cash. They have the typical $15.00 minimum purchase for credit cards and I was about to find some items to add up to $15.00 but Jack told me to just come back to pay for it instead of buying things I didn't need. Of course, I went straight to the ATM to pull out cash and came back to pay. You don't meet people as nice as these folks anymore so I am going to be a customer for life. I scheduled an appointment with Flam's for a window between 10 and 12. They did not show up and did not call me. When I called them, Tom stated that the technician called in sick. But, no one bothered to give me a call to tell me that they would not be there, so I lost two hours of my day. Though he was apologetic, they were not able to offer another appointment for another week and refused to come any earlier than 10 a.m., even though I explained that this was very difficult for us and that we could make that day if they could be there by 9. They refused to accommodate our request that they arrive during what is very normal business hours, particularly for a locksmith. I am extremely disappointed in the service (or lack thereof) that we received. read more

Exceptionally good, small town style customer service. Owner 'loaned' me a canister of lube to unstick my lock. Told me to bring it back the next day and if it worked, I should buy a bottle. I made the trip from Valencia to Sherman Oaks to replace a decorative office door handle that was drilled out because it was stuck in the closed position. I purchased the Emtek handle there 11 months earlier. Both Corey and Stanley were extremely helpful and were able to successfully repair my door handle without causing me to deal directly with the lock maker. They accomplished this replace / repair in 1 day and saved me money and sanity with a minimal charge of less than an hour of labor only. The door handle has been reinstalled and works great. I have used Flam's Key Service for many years. I have recommended them in the past to numerous customers and friends. They moved a few years ago and since then their service has rapidly gone DOWN HILL!!! Half the time when I call they never show up and when they do, the job is never done right. My front door lock never lasts longer than 2 or 3 months before I have to call them for service. Recently my handy friend came to my store to help me with a few necessary things that needed fixing and noticed my door was not working properly. He removed the handle and found that not only was the handle put on upside down but that the door handle had been installed with (not 1) but several broken parts and had numerous stripped screws holding it together, which not only caused it to need repair every few months but also made it nearly impossible to repair with out replacing nearly every part. My friend promtly called me alarmed and asked who had installed it and when. He was appalled and dismayed at how obviously shotty the job had been done. I explained how often I have had problems and he could only respond..." No wonder, there are broken parts all over the inside and it didn't happen from ordinary wear and tear." I can't tell you how disappointed I am in Flam's, I always try and support fellow businesses and I have always tried to support them but for the last couple years the mechanical service and customer service has left alot to be desired. I have been using and recommending Flams since I moved into the Sherman Oaks area in 1991. Yesterday I called to try to arrange for them to come out. They are quick to quote me the price, which was fine. But I wanted to make sure that they would not need to make two trips and so sent them a picture of the lock they would be dealing with. I did not r. I never a response to my email, when I called to follow up I was told they were busy. After several more hours with no response I called again and was hung up on twice. After agreeing to speak to Vikki privately for the sake of her company, I now regret of doing so, for she did exactly what she asked not to do, keep things private. She is searching for anything to make it seem as if I am at fault, so I will leave it to yelp to decide for themselves how they will interpret this situation. In the last two conversations she still has not answered the following question: 'If the phone number on the webpage next to her and Jack's photo is the correct number (818-789-5024)'. I did not get their phone number from Google, yelp, Yellow Pages, etc. My whole point in writing to the Better Business Bureau was because I know that I called the correct number and I know I received that quote and none of this would have happened if they had a proper quote system. It was the first quote that I got and I wanted to get a ball park to see how locksmith services work. A side note - the following quotes I got after Flam's were in the same ball park. It is indeed my fault for not getting the persons name on who gave the quote, and it is definitely Flam's Key Service's fault for not having a proper set up to manage calls coming in, to know who gave the quote, a database to lock the quote and maybe even a email system to email what was given. For a long term business, this is something that should be handled in the beginning of starting off. Vikki said: 'As for a data base system where every quote is emailed for every call, you will find it rare for any small business that does this, especially when a firm quote cannot be known. Where we can improve is asking our customers to "repeat back to us" what we said.' I think its funny how she mentions that there could be improvement, but it's even funnier that the 'repeat back system' idea is what she had to say. I didn't find that good enough. I feel that anyone who calls them should at least be told $79.50 for coming out, that it could be more and of course plus additional time, plus parts. I got none of this when I made the appointment, but it didn't matter because I had already gotten my quote days ago! I still have not heard anything about the last person I could have spoken to because he was out on the field. When I called to make the appointment, I was not told that I couldn't get a quote for my request and during the service being done the tech had to leave to get parts, he didn't mention any pricing. Sorry that my phone call after I sent the payment/letter seemed too kind, it felt good to make peace with Flam's, but I made sure to mention that I had sent you a letter. Writing to the BBB is something everyone should do if you feel that a company needs to look into the things to provide better services. My letter to yelp was because I noticed that that my check to Flam's was cleared and I didn't think it was fair after I wrote them a letter. Just like how Jack had allowed me to make a decision to pay Flam's Key Service or not, it was also up to them to accept my check. I will always pay whether I am at fault or not to avoid any further problems.
