Flanagan's. (2.9 stars). "And before you know just where you are, you're in an Irish pub!" - The High Kings (Irish Pub Song) After a month of eating here, I can honestly say I come here for the convenience & the people. I think I have tried virtually everything on the menu & while most aren't great, it's not the worst. I will review the following: -Black Forest Pasta -Create Your Own Burger -Shaved Prime Rib Sandwich -Boneless Braised Short Ribs -Chicken Parmesan Black Forest Pasta. (3.5 stars). Probably the best thing on the menu. It is cooked in a spicy Cajun cream sauce with blackened chicken, sausage, & spinach. I found that ordering this dish with shrimp is much better. The shrimps were deveined which was nice albeit frozen shrimps. What I like about this dish is that it is hearty & spicy. The fettuccini is cooked al dente & the dish comes with 3 pieces of grilled garlic bread. The garlic bread isn't very "garlicky" so I can't say I would ask for more... CYOB. (3 stars). I ordered a bacon jalapeño burger. The burger patty was generous & cooked to my liking (medium-rare). The jalapeños are canned which makes them unpleasant for me. The cheese was nice & MELTY. The bacon was crispy which is what made this burger A-OK. Flanagan's French Fries are surprisingly tasty & double fried for that extra crunch. Shaved Prime Rib Sandwich. (2 stars). First off, the Prime Rib is NOT SHAVED! I was envisioning a thin deli sliced Prime Rib with the fixings but what I got was far from that. Big thick slices of overly cooked "Prime Rib" were thrown into a hoagie bun which was baked with cheese. Extremely oily & definitely not something I would order again. I asked for the Au Jus on the side which was tasty but didn't help the dry meat very much. I also asked for the horseradish sauce but somehow never received it... Boneless Braised Short Ribs. (2.5 stars). When I heard all my co-workers raving about this weekly special I figured it must be amazing since they ordered 2 each?! I was excited to try it but my excitement was short lived. When I received this dish I thought it looked a tad bit dry but proceeded to dive in. The sauce really had no extra seasoning to help this poor slab of beef. The meat was a bit dry & reminded me of a soft beef jerky. The mashed potatoes were the best part of this dish. It wasn't the worst meal I have had but it definitely isn't a dish I would write home about. Chicken Parmesan. (3.5 stars). The MELTY cheese definitely hit the spot! The chicken was breaded & fried up nicely. The fettuccini was a tad bit over cooked but I would order this dish again. I'm starting to realize that the pasta dishes are the best choice here. --- All in all, a friendly place to come & grab some drinks. Flanagan's is a typical New England pub with bar food that caters to the locals. It's an average place as far as the food is concerned but the service here is always friendly! Whenever I walk in I am greeted with a friendly smile & a menu. The people who work here are amazing & always helpful. There is a HH which is from 1600-1800 when free appetizers are served (usually pizza & pasta). Drinks are at a discounted price during HH (a few cents cheaper?). Parking is available on-site in a private parking lot. Flanagan's is located in the lobby of the Best Western Olympic Inn in Groton CT. read more

We stopped here rather late after arriving in town. The bartender was very friendly and helpful. We ordered burgers and they were delicious. It was pretty quiet as there were only 3-4 other people there. This is not a chain restaurant (there's a chain called Flanagan's in Florida). read more

I purchased a Q 105 E Deal of the week, two of them actually. It was great. $100.00 in gift cards for about $40.00! My friend and I checked this place out on a Saturday night about 9pm. Flanagan's is located inside a best Western hotel, and let me tell you, the decor needs work. I mean, it works best as a grimy, dark, and grim bar setting. The waiter kind of igged me out, but he was one of the nicest waiters ever. I wasn't up for a full entree, and I've learned that I like the appetizers menu more than the entrees listed, so I got two orders of apps. I ordered a spicy calamari dish. Any place that serves it with the 'tentacles' parts gets an instant star in my book. It was over seasoned, as it seemed like it came from a McCormick cajun jar, but I still enjoyed it. My friend didn't as he prefers the typical (but also good) batter fried variety. It came with a chipotle aioli sauce that I did inquire about purchasing in supermarkets, but i still don't believe they do. My friend got a Fried Shrimp basket, that was as hot and freshly fried as anything I've ever tasted. Standard fare, but I was just surprised by the quality is all. I also got the southwestern eggrolls. Fearing the freshly fried hotness of the fried shrimp, I cautiously tried these. Oddly, the tips of the roll were wicked hot, but the center was cool. I can't explain it, and I'd have to give these a thumbs down just for the temperature. I came to Groton to visit my son at the Navy Submarine Base. The night I arrived it was 10pm and I quickly found out that CT doesn't sell booze after 9 or something like that. One late afternoon I found this place. It was mostly older tourists having a beer before headed to the casinos and there was one local guy too. It's a fairly small bar/restaurant in the Best Western. The bartender was very nice and chatted with me for a bit. Oh wait...I lied...there are places open in Groton at night for a drink but they are strip bars apparently. If you see a sign saying Cantina...it is not a Mexican restaurant/bar...it's a strip bar. I almost stopped by there but the only reason I didn't wasn't because the girls. I came here for dinner because we were staying at the Best Western connected to it. Food-wise: I got the steak fajitas which was a good portion and it came with a lot of ingredients that you use to make it yourself. I also had the chicken corn chowder which was a special for the day and it was great! Service-wise: Our server, Erin, was amazing. She was really helpful with suggestions and came over to check on us a good amount of times. Overall, it was a decent food place if you're looking for something good and casual. read more

Two stars because the women that were working were very personable and nice. The food was exactly what you could expect from a hotel that isn't the nicest with an attached restaurant in a small town. It wasn't dirty, but the dinner food was really random and most of it was dry. And the fries seemed like they were fried, sat out, and then refried when ordered. The bar area was super popular when we got there. It was a Friday night. When we moved into our apartment in Groton, the staff gave us a folder with various takeout menus, Flanagan's menu being among them. We wanted to try something new, so last night we ventured out to try this place. We're sorry we bothered. Having seen the menu at home, we thought it might be a nice place to go, but when we got there, the menu they handed us was much smaller than the sample we saw. Nothing looked appealing, and everything was overpriced (of course). The place seems to have a bit of an identity crisis. It looks like it's meant to be an Irish pub, but nothing on the menu reflects that....things like Mardi Gras Chicken and Coconut Shrimp don't remind me much of Ireland. The restaurant itself is inside a hotel, and the whole place smells like a hospital or nursing home. Unpleasant. I would be willing to forgive the off-putting nature of the place and just call it a bust if it wasn't for our server. Greg had the personality of a wet mop and looked as if his dog just died. He never smiled or even looked at us, and was constantly touching his face and his hair. We each ordered a beer and scanned the menu over and over to see if anything called to us, and it did not. Meanwhile, Greg was in and out of the kitchen, pouring sodas at the bar, and reaching into the garnish tray in between touching his face and running his hands through his (sorry, greasy) hair. This was rather unsettling so we decided to leave. Greg was back three times asking if we wanted anything else, and we asked for the check twice before he brought it to us, 15 minutes after we had finished our beers. This place is AWESOME. I've been staying at the hotel for work for the last month, and the government rate comes with $25 food credit here at Flanagans. Let me tell you, the food has been so amazing. They got a new restaurant manager about a month ago, the staff have told me, and they are very creative with their meals and their daily specials are to die for. The homemade desserts have been just wonderful. Just last night, I had a braised boneless beef short rib with sautéed brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes and bacon pieces all covered with a red wine gorgonzola demi glace and my coworkers had short rib sliders on a Hawaiian bun with onion bacon jam and apple wood smoked bleu cheese. I've had the majority of my meals down here for the last month and there is nothing I did not thoroughly enjoy. I considered giving 4 stars since the service can be slow, although they are very sweet, but everything else made up for it. Sundays and Thursdays they have great football deals including a free half time buffet and lots of big TVs. Give this place a try! read more

i went here because i had been here about a year or so ago and remembered it as quiet with good food. there was a table of 6 sitting near me that was so loud they disrupted everything. i ordered dinner and a glass of seltzer with lime not a lot od ice. i got vodka on the rocks. the manager/owner said it was an honest mistake and there was no harm done read more

Wow this place was bad for dinner. Inside wasn't so bad, plenty of tv's to watch sports, good complimentary popcorn. The menu consisted of a small amount of selections on a few photocopied Pieces of paper. The online menu is not available at all. We ordered the prime rib which was almost mediocre, and came with mashed with no gravy and corn which was the worst corn I ever consumed in my life. We had a buy one dinner get one thing and even at the discounted price it was horrible. I wouldn't have served the corn to a homeless person, and who serves mashed without gravy? If you go go for the draft beer deal during football games and eat the free popcorn, the food stunk. Staff was pleasant accounting for two stars instead of one. read more

Their food was amazing. Staying at the hotel we get free breakfast which is only so so. I was curious at how their evening meals were. I was pleasantly surprised. The kids meal portion was large enough to feed an adult and their regular portions were large enough to feed two. And it even tasted great. One of the best meals I have had. read more
