This review is really based on the service. This is your standard Chinese restaurant that focuses on Cantonese flavours. Lots of choices on the menu. All sorts of protein and vegetable options including fried rice and noodles. They have a page in the menu the focuses on their key dishes or favourites. There is a number of dishes that need to be ordered in advance and the menu clearly states this. In general the food was quite good. Really good wok hei. So what went wrong? We had reservations for 6 pm on a Thursday night. When we arrived it was half full so there was lots of availability. We were asked if we need help with ordering and due to the number of items and our in decisive elders we said we needed time to look and decide. Unfortunately we were not left alone to decide and the server just stood there waiting. We felt rushed. The fist dish came out quickly and it was another 5-10 minutes before the next dish came out. When it looked like we were almost done eating, dessert and the bill was brought out, we were not asked if we were done or were ready for dessert. When the bill arrived you can tell we were expected to pay right away and leave. This was not a leisurely family dinner. If the restaurant was busy I would say they wanted the table back but there were lots of tables available and no customers waiting. Total time 65 minutes. A delicious Cantonese restaurant with lots of flavourful wok hay dishes. I'm drooling thinking about the delicious dishes I had here! Here's what we got: Fried tiger shrimp and pumpkin in salted egg yolk 5/5 Pork belly with preserved mustard green 5/5 Stir-fried diced beef with garlic and mushroom 5/5 Stuffed chicken skin with minced shrimp 5/5 - The BEST thing ever. This needs a day in advance notice in order to get this but so delicious. Texture wise you get the crispy chicken skin with the soft minced shrimp. Fried tofu - 2 ways 5/5 - So good since you get the soft tofu version and a fried tofu skin version. Razor clams 5/5 - So plump and meaty. Worth every penny for this. Salt and pepper fried smelt 5/5 - I love fried smelt so this is a no brainer for me. Great crisp to this. Overall, a solid spot for a Chinese diner. The night i went was super packed and a section of the reso was blocked off as there was a party group, so service was a bit meh and loud but it wasnt too bad. Food cane relatively fast, and pricing was okay. A little bit higher than some Chinese reso (eg: 人人) but i wont say SUPER expensive (eg: yu seafood). I highly recommend their braised tofu and deep fried tofu curd dish, it looks super basic but it works and unique. Chicken was one of their highly recommend dish, but I wont say its that much different than others. I also got their fried grooper fish with asparagus, at first i thought its a pan fried dish as the Chinese was 炒, but it turns out it was deep fried. So ngl at first i was like its gonna be so bleh, but it was actually very good. Of course you wont be able to taste the 鲜 （freshness) but like it works, an the asparagus and mushroom WERE SOOO FREAKING GOOD Overall 4/5! Pretty good Chinese restaurant. The food is all quite tasty, but the majority of the cooking methods are fried. Had the set meal which came with soya sauce chicken, fried fish, sweet n sour pork, fried tofu, vegetables, fried rice, and other dishes. Service is pretty good too. They mostly have large tables so it is better for groups of 5-12. It gets busy so I would recommend reservations. read more

My second time here after Big Mouth Kee closed down (loved that place). First time the food was mediocre so I decided to try again after 3 years on Christmas Day. BIG mistake! Ordered the geoduck and it was THEE most pathetic looking geoduck I've seen in my life. The chef should not be preparing sashimi, as the knife skills were clearly lacking. This (my photo) was supposed to be a 2.3 lb geoduck at $58 CAD per pound, yet the sashimi portion amounted to only about 10 unevenly cut pieces, while the fried portion took up the entire plate (def got jerked $) it was a complete insult. If I wanted a fried dish, I would have ordered salt and pepper squid for much less. I brought my issue up to the waitress but she gave me the typical run around. I didn't push further because what was I to do? start arguing on Christmas Day? and she was nice prior, so I just paid and left. Lesson learned. CHECK YOUR BILL BEFORE LEAVING. Came here for Mother's Day, and the customer service was absolutely terrible. First, they forgot to serve one of the dishes that was included in the package. When I went back to let them know, they responded with, "How would I know if you didn't already eat it?" I explained that their servers should know what was brought out and what was cleared--there was clearly a missing dish. Instead of taking accountability, they blamed us for not mentioning it while we were still there. We didn't realize until afterward, and they showed no responsibility for failing to put the order through. I asked for a partial refund equal to the value of the missing dish, which they refused. I then requested a partial refund on the tip, since our total should've been lower. They claimed they didn't know how to process refunds. I mentioned I'm familiar with POS systems, and they suddenly said the package was "cash only"--even though the lady at the counter told us there was no difference between cash and credit, and so we paid by card. The woman then began yelling at me and said the only thing they could offer was to give us the dish. They kept asking for the conversation to be over and said " Here! I'll treat you the dish. " when we already paid for the package including that dish. Won't be back. read more

3.5 STARS Called for reservations on Saturday afternoon to book for 7:30pm, and surprisingly I was able to get a table for 3. Got there, and the restaurant is already packed with more people waiting to get seated. We got our table and people were angry "claiming they got here before us". First of all calm down sir, and second of all, unlike you, we made reservations. Anyway, it was so busy, you could tell the waitresses were scrambling, trying to get our tea, to setting up our plates and utensils, and having to wave them down for their menu. They were all very nice though. We got complimentary soup, which was good, but even better if it came out hot as it was on the warm side. We ordered the steamed eel in black bean sauce, free range chicken, snow pea leaves in garlic sauce, salted egg yolk with deep fried pumpkin/squash and bitter melon, and last but not least ginger and onion oyster pot. The good: oysters were HUGE! Flavour wise was good, but had better. The free range chicken, was delicious, no complaints, and the salted egg yolk with deep fried pumpkin and bitter melon was delightfully crispy and light with a nice salted egg yolk flavour. The bad: steamed eel meat was a tad bit tough and the black bean sauce was a bit on the salty side. The snow pea leaves were on the tough side, as if they were old. At the end of our meal, we got complimentary dessert as well. Yummy, and not too sweet. Would come back again if my usual spot is booked up. read more

The vibes in this resto reminded me of Top Choice Restaurant in Markham. Located where Big Mouth Kee used to be, the parking lot is usually packed. I thought this spot would be really big inside but it's actually relatively modest in size. We were sat near the seafood tanks and private room, on the right side of the resto. My family dines at Starchiva regularly, just down the road over on East Beaver Creek and that resto is the gold standard for us right now in terms of overall canto food experience. So how does this place stack up? This place put up a valiant effort. Everything was slightly on the salty side to be honest (especially the dishes containing shrimp). The salted egg yolk shrimp and pumpkin was very crispy and had great texture but the shrimps tasted like they had been brining in saltwater for awhile. Similarly, we got 2 types of their stuffed wings (stuffed wings w/ sticky rice and stuffed wings w/ shrimp). The shrimp filling in the wings were also uncharacteristically salty. The sweet n' sour pork was very crispy and fresh but the meat to fat ratio was off. There was a lil too much fat inside each piece. Beef tenderloin with garlic and mushrooms had good flavour imo but was too oily. I could see the mushrooms swimming in oil at the bottom of the plate when it arrived. Same with the eggplant and chicken stone bowl. A little bit too much oil. Lobster e-fu noodle I really enjoyed but my family didn't think it was anything special. Likewise, I enjoyed the sizzling green onion and ginger oyster pot but my family (and my bro's wife) found the oysters to be on the salty side. They also made an error with our oyster pot and cooked the wrong style but the waitress took it off our bill. Great service! For a place that prices itself like Starchiva I felt like it was much noisier/louder and also not as spacious. I just didn't get the sense of comfort while dining in this restaurant. This restaurant is small so it gets super loud and hard to track down anyone. You gotta catch their attention as soon as you see them. Visited Toronto for a few days to have some good Chinese food. Found the Flavourful House on Yelp and decided to give them a try based on some of the reviews and their menu. Since there were only three of us, we couldn't try too many menu items, especially because my husband had his eyes on an Alaskan King Crab. We had it cooked three ways: steamed legs with garlic and vermicelli, braised body with ginger and scallions, and steamed eggs with the shell. We also ordered three steamed scallops with vermicelli because almost every table had them and they looked awesome. The way we ordered our king crab, cooked in the mildest manner, was actually the easiest way to tell if the chef was skillful. There was no heavy spice to cover up any flaws; and the freshness and sweetness of the king crab really stood out. Their kitchen staff was fantastic! Everything was perfectly cooked and heavenly. They were also very well presented and looked really appetizing. The waitresses and the lady by the name of Anna who seemed to be the owner were all really helpful and friendly. Service was great, plates were changed frequently even though they were extremely busy. We also got free soup and free dessert. They have a "private kitchen" 私房菜 menu that you can order from a day in advance. There are some dishes that are almost lost art that cannot be found in Hong Kong or the U.S., dishes that require a lot of skill and are time consuming to prepare (for example, 傳統茘茸香酥鴨 traditional deep fried duck with taro). They also have a lot of live seafood available. It's true that this restaurant is crowded and noisy, and tables are quite close together. It's not a place where you can enjoy a relaxed and romantic meal. But if you want authentic, exquisite Cantonese cuisine, this is the place for you. read more

Food is appropriate level quality. The location is the worst - in the bottom of a shopping plaza and dirty carpets were strewn across the front entrance railings. Inside the kitchen is next to the bathroom... can only imagine the hygiene levels. Just because they advertise that they make specific dishes others don't (i.e., taro stuff duck)- other restaurants still actually make it. They may be a victim of their success as service is rushed to push you out and servers rush by without acknowledging a request. We decided to go to Flavourful House for our family celebration and they were able to put us in the private room. Service overall is polite and prompt. They are famous for wok hay and traditional Chinese artisan cuisine that they are rarely found in Toronto. We ordered the wild duck soup燉水鴨, eight treasure duck 八寶鴨, stuff chicken skin with minced shrimp 百花雞，steamed melon with fungus and mushrooms 冬林上素. They are all very rich flavour and delicious. The stuff chicken skin and minced shrimp; the skin is so crispy and shrimp paste very nicely done. We also ordered extra regular dishes like stir fried lobster (pay extra for the noodles as base), sweet and sour pork, stir fried mushroom and beef, XO sauce tiger shrimps and scallops with wild mushroom and veggies. Open late... amazing sweet and sour pork. Out side was still crisp even though it was covered in sauce. So so good. Only one before have I have such a perfect execution of this dish. Decided to try something different... egg plant and pork e-fu stewed noodles... it's was good but the flavors were just a bit too subtle. Then we had the Shrimp scallop garlic fried rice... wow the rice was just perfect... not too soft... just enough chew and perfectly seasoned. Good helpings of shrimp and scallops... didn't feel like they skimmed. Loved it. Service was fast... good thing too... we were so hungry. Well explore more items on the menu next visit. Atmosphere is busy when you first arrive. Multiple tables already eating. Been here before, just haven't had a chance to write a review until now. The food is very flavorful there is no joke about that. In fact if you find anything that is not flavorful I would be surprised. They provide a daily soup and dessert for each meal here. We made a reservation for 7pm for 10 people. We couldn't really find the restaurant location it was like below a plaza. The parking was hard to find we had to park further down and walk over. When we gpt the restaurant there was a lot of people waiting for a table. They say us almost like in the front of the door. So people who is waiting for the table can watch us eat. I don't like when someone stare at you when your eating. The tables are out of places there is no room if you need to go to washroom. The floors is very slippery if someone fall they can get hurt. I know the restaurant is small but u have to make sure u put tables where it is very walkable. There is VIP rooms but need to reserve a head of time. We did order different types of foods and wow it came pretty fast we haven't finish eating other foods. It is like they rushing us to finish eating. The only positive thing is that the foods does taste good. The service is ok had to ask for water a couple of times. The staff is ok. Overall I will give 3 stars. If I will come back here again. We pre-ordered a wintermelon soup which was packed with goodies and quite flavourful. A nice start to the meal. Also got this mushroom medley dish with pumpkin and celery - was surprised by the quality of mushrooms in the dish. Also had a nice subtle truffley flavour to the dish. Boss lady Anna was extremely patient and understanding as we regrettably called multiple times to change the date and time of our dinner. We were able to book one of their rooms. The service and all the food was excellent but what stood out to me the most was the stir fry fungus and pumpkin! This is a must try item on their menu and it may not sound like much but it was extraordinary. You guys. IT TASTES LIKE TRUFFLES! It's either the taste of one of the mushrooms used or they used truffle salt. It was DELICIOUS. I could probably finish that whole dish myself. I would go back to flavourful house just for that item! I came by for dinner with a few friends and had a merely ok time. We got the haka style steam duck, ginger scallion oyster pot, and the king oyster mushroom with pea shoots. I thought the dishes tasted pretty bland, and the duck especially was hard to chew. On top of that, the dishes took pretty long to arrive and we had to remind them multiple times. Our daughter brought us to this restaurant on our recent visit with her in Toronto. We wanted to have classic Cantonese dishes and that's what we got. Well executed seafood, chicken, and pork dishes. Very Cantonese as well as a majority of their clientele as we could see. This restaurant still served the complimentary house soup as an appetizer like many restaurants used to do.
