This is hands down my favorite Cuban spot in all of Houston. I love the food, the overall feel of the place and the staff is very warm and friendly. I also enjoy going on Friday or Saturday nights to listen to live salsa music and have drinks. So glad this place is near my home! read more

Worst cuban sandwich ever. I will not return again. One pickle only in whole sandwich, one thiny slice of pork, half thiny slice of ham, and cheese. For $8.00 it is supposed to be different. The place is clean and nicely decorated, we tried the TOSTONES and EMPANADAS, I highly recommend both. My wife had the turkey and ham sandwich, she absolutely loved it. The portions are perfect. I tried ROPA VIEJA which was delicious! We will be back again, I highly recommended this place if you want to try something different. Terrible place! That should say it all, but I'll go into details. Made reservations but when got here the table was double booked. 30min later we got a table, 20min after that a waiter finally took our drink order. Simple order...two beers.. 15 min later one beer and one water, needless to say the waitress was rude seemed overwhelmed and didn't know the menus. Long story short..food was awful and cold, we got overcharged for drinks, our food was not what we ordered and the waitress said it's what you will get!! This is a very fun and safe place to hang out on the weekends, and even late into the evening. The security is wonderful and the food is very delicious. I enjoyed the chicken, fried bananas, rice and especially the flavor of the black beans. The live music was not overly loud, and was awesome. The dance floor is a decent size, not too small. The restrooms were clean but a little hot and stuffy in there, after dancing :) Overall, this is a great place for a fun date night or a party! I will be returning soon. read more

I went here on Friday for a birthday celebration in the entertainment room, and was pleasantly surprised by everything. The service was friendly, the atmosphere was laid-back, and I was very impressed by the food. There was a lot of flavor (high quality) and I enjoyed the live entertainment. I am Cuban, this is original Cuban food, you can call me an expert ;) , don't expect anything hot but spicie, if you want something similar to Mexican food this is definitely no the place for you. I went with a friend, we ordered congris, Puerco asado, tostones and yucca, all was really good, and bring me a bit nostalgic, tasted the same I was expected to taste. I waited for 20 minutes without any service. There was another three tables that arrived after me, and they received service. When I was leaving I told them they had terrible service, and they said the reason was because no one wrote down our table. What a great reason they gave me. After hearing so many good things about this place I decided to give it a try myself. I was born in Cuba but raised here in the states, eating the best Cuban food ever cooked by mother. As far as the bar/club scene I normally go to country clubs. After my first time visiting Flor De Cuba, lets just say that has changed. All of a sudden I felt something inside of me that brought out the Cuban in me. The food and the service was great. But best of all once the band started playing that good old fashioned Cuban music, I felt goose bumps throughout my body. I cannot believe I had distanced myself from my culture that much for so long. Now that is one of my fav places to go and have a good time amongst my new friends. Visited the restaurant on Saturday, April 6 around 7 pm. I have no idea what the folks who love the food are thinking. All I could think of was bland and WAY overcooked! Other than my daughters shrimp in garlic butter, evey other protein was like a piece of leather. I had the steak (Bistec de Palomilla) and it was like chewing on rawhide, but without the flavor. I could not tell of any seasoning at all. My wife had the red snapper and it might have been even worse. I have heard for years about Cuban black beans and rice and was SO looking forward to trying them. All I can say is thank goodness are Cajun and Mexican neighbors know how to serve their version of rice and bean. It was eating wet sawdust. The bread served to the table with the herb oil however, was devine. The herb oil was good on everything. It ended up being the only source of flavor for the rice and beans. Like others have said, the service was horrible. Took too long between table visits to get drink orders, take food orders and I thought they forgot about us between ordering food and actually getting it served. At the risk of being called a sexist male chauvinist, I have to point out that, though the waitstaff were all vey attractive, having a G-string stick out 2-3 inches over your, 1) too low pants, or 2) too short shirt was not what I wanted to see walking past the table. Yeah, I know, don't look. I had my 18 year old son with me, so you tell him. Overall, very disappointing with a restaurant that we had high hopes for. We will never go back. read more

The food at Flor de Cuba is delicious, but the service is horrible, which is why I can only give this place 1 star. I've visited this place during a very busy time, on a Sunday at lunch time, the place was jam packed. I understand that at peak times, slow service and delays in getting the food out in a timely manner can be expected. It took about 15 minutes for the waitress to take our order, and another 25 minutes to get the order to the table. If the waitstaff were a bit more attentive, it may have made that particluar visit a bit more enjoyable. It also didn't help that when we went to complimentary salad bar, our table was cleared, and that included the appeziter we had only half eaten. When we returned to our table, it took about 5 minutes or so to find a waitress to flag down to explain what had happened. She seemed less than understanding when I explained what happened. I asked for a replacement or just not to be charged the full amount of the appetizer (croquetas de jamon). She said I would need to speak with a manager and rudely walked away. The manager was nice enough to bring out another appetizer and we were still charged the full price. No biggie. The food was good, no complaints there. I returned on another occasion to pick up a to-go order during the early lunch hour (around 11 am) and arrived to an empty restaurant. My order wasn't ready even though I had called it in 20 minutes earlier. I was picking lunch up for myself and a coworker, so I asked the waitress if she could split the check. She gave a deep sigh and rudely snapped back at me saying that if I needed the check split, I should have specified that when I placed my order on the phone. She would not split the check. I was taken back by how rude she responded to a simple request. I didn't argue, I just paid the check and waited for my order. Once I received my order, I double checked the containers when I got to my car. I was short a side order of beans so I had to go back and deal with the rude waitress who took my order. She was not apologetic for the mistake or inconvenience, then again, I wouldn't expect her to be. I have not and will not go back to this place, nor would I recommend it! There are too many other Cuban restaurants in Houston that serve a good plate of Cuban food with a side of excellent service (Tropical Isaland Cafe and Cafe Piquet, just to name a few)! read more

Well first thing's first, the food is really great. The service, however, is not. Wait staff will barely make eye contact or smile at you while they serve you and will also disappear for a time, leaving drinks empty and plates to stack. They also have this ridiculous policy of charging a $5 cover for the bar area, even for guests who spend a bunch of money on the meal and even spend the cover amount four-fold on a tip. I gave them two stars because the food is good but the service is spotty as hell. I mean either it is fast or you could drop dead waiting for them to even acknowledge you. This place has horrible customer service. It should not get a single star. My wife and I visited this place on a Saturday night to enjoy the Latin music and have some drinks. I ordered a beer and my wife a coffee but the waitress (I think her name was Anaily) never brought our order and is not like she was busy because we saw her walking around socializing with the other waitresses. After it was obvious that she had forgotten about us, we reminded her but still our drinks never came. I then went to the bar and ordered a beer and a coffee. The coffee still took another 15 minutes. We thought that maybe it was just the waitress who had no concept of customer service but when it was time to pay the bill we met the manager who also does not have an understanding of the customer service concept. The reason the manager came to our table is because the waitress was bringing us a bill for the coffee she never brought and I had already paid for it at the bar. I told the waitress that I paid the coffee at the bar and that I was not paying her anything so she brought the manager. After explaining to the manager that we had already paid for the coffee and the waitress never took care of us, the manager just went to the bar to verify that we paid for the coffee and walked away. I said excuse me sir and he acted like he didn't hear me and walked to the back of the bar. I'm never coming back to this place, the only reason I didn't leave in the first place is because we were meeting another couple. read more

Owner wife is very RUDE!!! Had a dinner reservation for my birthday celebration for 30+ guests and they were treated unpleasant by the owner wife (door cashier). Gladly the Live band and waitresses who took care of us were great. We should have ordered a bottle plus more drinks to it but didnt want to spend more! Flor de Cuba is amazing. I had eaten there when looking for a Cuban restaurant to cater my husband's birthday. The restaurant is cute with a nice size dining room. I placed an order for the party and the owner, Santiago agreed to deliver the food since we live fairly near. Oh my goodness was the food amazing. We had the Cuban sandwiches, Media noche sandwich, everyone liked the Cubans but I didn't think I would get a great a response for the Media Noche-I should have ordered more. we also served the spinach and cheese, Pollo and chorizo empanadas, those again were a huge hit. Everyone raved about the Ropa Vieja served with the rice, beans and maduros. This was the only part of the meal we had leftover and we ate them again after the party. Delicious. I only have great things to say about the food and the service I received from Santiago. I had several guests ask for directions to the restaurant and said they would definitely eat there. My only regret was not getting more empanadas for left overs, more media noche and Business cards from Santiago to hand out to guests. I can't wait to eat here again and try the Sunday brunch. read more

I went yesterday for the first time to flor de Cuba with my family and we loved it... Starting with the good service, our waitress was fast, nice, in a good mood she earn a good tip, the complimentary fresh bread and butter is delicious, try not to get full with just the bread.. save room for the huge plates, we started with some appetizers,croquetas, stuffed potato, stuffed yuca, sweet platains, all soo good, I ordered the ropa vieja with mixed black beans and rice and also yuca with mojo, you have to tried the yuca with mojo soo good, other things my family tried and they also loved was the lechon asado (pork), tostones, the uruguayan milanesa that is stuffed with ham and cheese my mom is from uruguay so she had to try it and she was very happy with it.. I also like the natural juices, made me feel back in my country.. soo good for this HOT summer.. the music was also great, a live duet with a variety of music fom latin america thumps up!! The food price is like $12-15 a plate but they are huge, 2 people could eat from just one, we took home the leftovers.. also on our way out I saw on another table some strips of fried crunchy platains with mojo on top that look soo good and I still thiking about it.. definitely will ask for it next time, also will like to come back a friday or saturday night to dance and try their mojitos!! We were soo full we couldn't eat any desserts but we took home some pastries and the pastel de carne was good too, like the ones I ate in miami...usually I don't write reviews but this place deserve it, there are not many good places with great latin food in houston, we were very satisfied.. soo I have to recommed it!! It is not a secret that the service here is below par. I always read reviews before I go to a new place because I like the suggestions. I guess I always believe that service reviews are hit or miss. That ONE server was bad, but I think this place has a real issue. Our server was a cute young girl who barely spoke any English. She would take one person's order and then run away from the table. It took at least 3 trips before our entire party of 15 had ordered their food. I ordered the Fried Beef which was a recommendation on another site. It was okay, but a lot of it was very dry. The rice and beans were amazing though! We also ordered an app which came after the main course. It was Carnavale Cuba, and it was to die for. There was a Fried Mashpotato ball stuffed with picadillo, and some other fried goodies. Overall the service left a lot to be desired, we ordered many of our drinks from the bartender. Our check had a more expensive dish on it and one extra beer, but when we brought that to our server's attention it was taken care of. I would visit Flor de Cuba again regardless of the service. I had lunch at Flor de Cuba, so we chose the buffet in order to try a variety of items. They have excellent fried chicken, good congrí (moros y cristianos is another name for this dish of white rice and black beans cooked together), good frijoles negros [black bean soup], and good ham croquettes. The food was authentic and very good. BTW, I grew up eating my mom's Cuban food and am always comparing restaurants to her excellent cooking. This restaurant was a positive experience. Yum! After reading through the past reviews... it seems this authentic Cuban restaurant has received some mixed opinions. My family and I met here for dinner last Friday night and everything was outstanding. The service was incredible and everyone was so helpful. I personally have enjoyed Cuban cuisine here on a few occasions (I am really big into trying out new cuisine, this place used to have a lunch buffet... not sure if they still do). The rest of my family though was new to this idea. The staff at Flor de Cuba was very accommodating; they gave us suggestions, and explained what everything was. We had a table of 7 (including two teens and a 6 year old) and not once did we have to ask for a refill for our drinks or anything. It was a nice change of pace to actually go somewhere that you feel they really do care about how you are served and they type of experience you take away from their establishment. The food was also outstanding... we had the Carnaval Cubano appetizer, everything was so fresh and crisp! Delicioso!!! For our main we indulged in Parrillada Cubana (family style sampler) it is A LOT of food!!!! If you are going with multiple people, this is definitely the way to go. You get a little bit of everything.... and then some! The plates just kept coming and coming! We ended up having leftovers for two days! hahahaha. Yes... I am one of those girls that takes leftovers, I am not ashamed to love good food! I did not give this place 5 stars, only because a couple of Cuban people my husband work with said it is close, but not quite home.
