We have visited St Augustine many times, but this was our first trip to the Florida Cracker Cafe. Great choice! We weren't starving so we decided to share... we started off with the fried green tomatoes - perfectly breaded and fried with an absolutely amazingly cup of yummy yummy goodness mustard remoulade. It's just like Frank's Hot Sauce "I'D PUT THAT SH*T ON EVERYTHING!" - OMG soooooooo good. We then shared the fried trigger fish sandwich. Were have lived in Florida all our lives but this was the first time having trigger fish. It was a very light tasty meaty fish... it will definately be in our list of fish to get from now on. This is a nice little cafe right on St. George - the walking, shopping and dining street in St. Augustine. It is "seat yourself" in a bit of a hardscrabble (i.e., "cracker") wood floored and bare tabled atmosphere. The service was excellent and public (clean) restrooms were just outside the back door. We had a really good lunch here and it was our first visit to this restaurant. My wife had the alpha sprout, avocado wrap (super healthy). Not my choice but she loved it. I had the Philly Steak sandwich minus green peppers (why places outside of Philly insist that steak sandwiches have green peppers is beyond me). Great roll, good amount of proper, thinly sliced steak, really good. But I have to say the stars of the show were the side dishes! We had cucumber salad, cheesy grits, and the potato salad that had bacon in it! We'd eat here again for sure. read more

Just what we were looking for-great food and atmosphere. Really reminded me of the fish shacks I grew up with. Loved sitting outside. Has the wings and conch fritters to start. Found the sauces on both quite different and excellent. The datil pepper sauce in the wings is really good. And the sauce with the conch is different than the Bahamian version. And a good change. Also had the shrimp po-boy which had lots of shrimp with a great and different remoulaude. Other had the fish catch sandwich and really enjoyed it. Service was attentive and friendly. We were walking down St George Street in St Augustine and stopped in the Florida Cracker Cafe for a quick bite to eat. Very friendly staff. Found out Cracker meant the original pioneers of Florida. We had their Rice and Beans that was really hit the spot and fried Clam Strips and they were good. read more

I had a cup of minorcan clam chowder and the fried green tomato BLT - whoever thought of a fried green tomato on a BLT upon a sub roll is a genius. I should have gotten a bowl of chowder - it was exceptionally tasty. It has a bite but not so hot you can't eat it. I've heard of it, glad I tried it. If you're a chowder head and only ever eat one sort of chowder from one special town then either pass on this one or go in with an open mind. It is tasty indeed. Atmosphere is typical touristy bar/cafe. Service is well above average - we had no wait and service was attentive. Food quality is well above average with unique variations to explore. So I'm here in St. Augustine Florida for a bit a relaxation and wine! Ok, this was the first place we ate at on the first day of our trip. It was good, a few little things made it a three star place for me. The first thing they didn't have a few things on the menu as they revised their menu to a shorter version. The spicey shrimp dip however was a hot spicey little bowl of fucking goodness. With homemade chips on the side. And they cider for me so that was awesome. They ran out of specials so we settled for tender with dill sauce and shrimp and grits. We were told the tenders were breaded in house, these however were store bought. Dill sauce was tasty. Shrimp was a bit sweet, but good. The grits however were lumpy and dry if you could believe it. They were not creamy or garlicky or cheesey. You know how grits look after they came out of the fridge and you try to warm them but have to add more shit to make them eatable, that was how these grits were. One thing a good southern knows is your collards are supposed to be fresh and cooked all damn day with ham bones bacon and all the good stuff. These were canned, I'm not downing canned anything but somethings should be cooked fresh. Potato salad was very tasty. The wait staff was very good, Ashley was super sweet and helpful. My friend and I dined here in good part because despite being after eight in the evening, we could not get into our beloved Floridian without at least a twenty-five minute wait. The Florida Cracker Café could get us right in, however, and we were hungry. From the location and atmosphere, it's clear they depend mainly on the downtown tourist trade for their business and they were pretty busy, too. The service however was superb and also, as we were there around closing time, I was very impressed at the level of detail the mainly young staff were taking in cleaning every possible surface. There may well be operating theatres not as clean as this restaurant. The food however, was not as impressive to me. My friend said his steak was quite good, however, we both found the red beans and rice very much lacking and my cheese grits were simply bland. I'd ordered a seperate plate of cornbread at additional cost and three of the five muffins served were burnt and not very good though two were fine. My shrimp po'boy sandwich was pretty good and certainly an ample portion. The substandard grits, red beans, and cornbread drop this down to the three-star level. These are easy, simple, dishes to make and the restaurant should be able to pull them off with ease. The seafood-heavy menu also isn't really "cracker" and again, the focus seems to be quickly pleasing tourists. I guess they're ok at what they do, but could be much better. read more

Popped in here for a quick appetizer to hold us over until lunch. We ordered the fried gator tail with the marmalade sauce served along with it and it was fantastic. I like when restaurants actually give you enough sauce for whatever it is you order instead of having to ask for more. They did just that. The gator tasted very fresh and it was fried perfectly. The portion was just right and the interior of the restaurant was somewhat small but spacious and comforting. Our server was quiet, but she came around often, got us everything we needed and kept our drinks full. Looking around, the portions for most of the entrees that I saw were massive. We weren't very hungry, which is why we settled on just an appetizer and mainly wanted to just sit for about 20 minutes in the AC as it was starting to heat up. Had lunch there today. The employees were outstanding and the food was delicious. My wife had fried shrimp were fresh and breaded perfectly, not over breaded like some places. We came in for a quick bite. I honestly didn't think it would be quick considering how busy the place was. The main draw was that they had fried oysters. We asked our server if the oysters looked any good and she swore that they were big and juicy. So, we ordered the oyster platter and we were not disappointed. Not only were the oysters spot on but the service was quick and efficient. In fact, we ordered a couple of dishes and told our server to just bring everything out all at once, which actually happened. The food tasted just like anything else there was nothing special that really set it apart from any other restaurant. My wife had to hand deliver our debit card to the waiter so we could pay because he seem to just have forgotten about us. This restaurant has been my favorite in Saint Augustine for decades. The gator tail, conch fritters, and cornbread appetizers are delicious. My favorite entree is the fried oysters. They serve ample portions and provide friendly service. When busy, service can be a little slower. If that's a pet peeve for anyone, I suggest you sit at the bar or at least inside rather than outside. In the summertime, the fresh-squeezed lemonade stand in front of the restaurant is a God-send. If I could only rate the service it would be 5/5. Jenna was an awesome waitress; she was extremely tentative and friendly with a southern charm. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about the food. I ordered the Jambalaya as it was one of their "favorites", but was thoroughly disappointed. It's listed on the menu as having shrimp and oysters, but if you zoom into my picture there was not a single piece of shrimp or oyster to be found. A decent amount of really dry chicken and sausage was plentiful. It seems like this Jambalaya has been sitting in a large pot in the fridge for a few days and they simply heat it up as ordered. With it being very dry, pasty, and lower lower in temperature I conclude my previous statement. I understand that as a restaurant this dish would not be cost effective to make plate by plate as ordered, but smaller batches would make the quality much higher. My friends ordered chicken alfredo, rock shrimp, and shrimp scampi. The only thing that was worth the price was the rock shrimp. Everything was overpriced and sub par for quality. read more
