Great bakery! We had several of their tarts and sweets, as well as avocado toast and a mocha. The highlight has to be their chia seed pudding/mini bowl. It had the freshest rasberry flavor that mixed so well this the chia seed pudding. The chocolate hazelnut and passion fruit tarys were really good, and the only problem was that we didn't order more to go to satisfy the cravings I had later. The sore was pretty quaint and inviting. Floriole was suggested by friend of mine. It was a good choice, since the place had several tables outdoor and that was one of weather perfect Chicago days. Indoor ambient is appealing and table size is appropriate for the menu servings.Like a lot the fact that cappuccino was served in ceramic cup. Didn't ask how many shots of coffee is in serving, but I was missing a coffee strength in it. I wanted to try some other offerings and order breakfast sandwich and buckwheat scone. This place was such a gem to find while walking around Lincoln Park with the Yelp app! Is it too cliche to say I felt transported to Paris for an hour or two? When you first step in, you find a huge amount of baked goods and menu items. Everything looks super delicious, and you can see the crew working in the back. The times I've gone, I always gotten a croissant. These are about as close as I've seen get to real French croissants, even if the price is a bit painful to take in. I've also had breakfast here a few times. While the portions for a baked egg may look tiny, the flavors are incredibly rich and you will come out full. (I came after a pilates class and I savored every last bite). The vibe is perfect for some quiet thinking or discussions - I saw more people here with a book than a laptop or phone out. Only downside is that the coffee is average at best. The ice coffee was okay, while I actually ended up leaving some of my hot drip coffee behind. Which in a way was too bad--clearly this is a place that deserves exploration. We ordered a latte (upper echelon), a hot chocolate (upper echelon), and a fruit bowl of blackberries, blueberries and apricots. I like this bakery a lot and I swear you'll always get a four star review from me if you offer caneles! French bakeries are always a win in my book. Nestled in Lincoln park, this was a perfect afternoon spot after a meal. The choices were unlimited and the bakery was bustling after we got there. I like to think I bring in the crowd to most places! Passion fruit tart: light, airy, smooth, very sweet but also perfectly tart. I'm not a huge fan of tarts, but this was so good. One of our better choices. Canele: yumyumyum. Always good if done correctly. I want one as we speak. Crispy on the outside and creme brûlée flavor on the inside. It's very much like a Vietnamese dessert that's native to my family's home town which is why I love this so so so much. It's just a sophisticated version of it. Almond chocolate croissant: ack! So dry! It was so so displeasing, we weren't sure what to do with it. There was a filling inside too but we simply could not eat it. Everything I have tried from here has been incredible. The one small complaint I would have is the wait for breakfast sandwiches to go. If you are in a rush it may take a bit too long. This is based strictly on the bread. I do not understand why they Feel the need to brush the sourdough with butter. I bought one today and by the time I got home the bag was greasy because of the butter and the bread just doesn't taste like bread, it tastes more like a pastry. Floriole has gotten back into my good graces. I was enamored when it first opened but then my ardor cooled over time due to disappointments time and again with them running out of stuff --and this wasn't at or near closing time, but during peak business hours. I'm happy to report that after several more visits, they seem to have made adjustments and I've rarely encountered any issues with respect to lack of product. On the contrary, they seem to have added even more delectables, both savory as well as sweet. Pots du creme (both chocolate and caramel) remains a favorite and I'm a big fan of any of their offerings which showcase seasonal ingredients (last week it was all things strawberry and rhubarb). Their savory items are pretty terrific too, with things like tartines, quiche, and pizzettes. Recently I enjoyed a delicious tartine with asparagus and lemon ricotta. It was really light and lovely. An absolutely beautiful, glowing addition to this stretch of Webster...hooray for copious elbow room, local coffee, fresh baked pastries, sandwiches, quiche and macaroooooooons! It's no small feat to open a bakery just steps from Sweet Mandy B's, but alas...the concept is quite different, and the color palette decidedly less pastel. SPACE: A whole lotta tables, chairs, shiny floors, bright windows, hardwood and air. Make no mistake, this sign says "bakery," but the space screams "stay awhile." (so, of course...I did). The communal like table on the second floor (yes, TWO floors!) is perfect for a caffeine-fueled study session, brainstorm, etc. (free wifi...score). COFFEE: Fabulous offerings courtesy of Metropolis! (my favorite local coffee roaster). I had one small cup of coffee ($2) + real mug, and then tried my hand at a soy latte, which was richly beautiful, and came complete with espresso art leaves in the froth. Oh, fine. You've won me over. TREATS: A salted carmel made of dreams and laced with destiny. Killer. SUSTENANCE: *The olive oil granola is crunchy, pecan-y, and well made/mixed. I'm bewildered how this place could average 4 stars with over 300 reviews. My first (and last) experience with this place happened about 20 minutes ago. Keeping it simple I decided to get a coffee and brownie. I asked the gentleman at the counter what brand they brewed, and when he responded with Intelligentsia as an admitted coffee snob I was somewhat relieved. Upon tasting the coffee, I think someone switched out the good stuff for a Folgers Extra Light and Weak Roast.... This stuff was bitter, burnt, and I'm assuming from earlier this morning. To add insult to injury they have the nerve to charge more than La Colombe for an 8 oz cup! In a word: terrible. The cascade of disappointments continued with what I can only describe as armed robbery in the form of a brownie.. I would've taken a pic to illustrate how tiny this thing is but I threw it in the trash after one bite. The best words I can think of to describe it are: chalky, dry, tasteless, rip-off, dollar store. The craziest thing of all is that one of the best bakeries in the entire world is literally half-a-block away! How on earth these people plan to compete is a true mystery. Getting back to bakeries, against my better judgment a post-breakfast stop on day three would take me back to Floriole, a spot whose hype seemed to outstrip its quality on my first visit even if they were the only space in town to serve a Canele and a place I fully anticipated would wow even less given some of the French pastries I've had since - an assumption I was willing to set aside only due to the fact that the Kouign Amann was their pastry of the month. Arriving early but finding the place jammed packed and sold out of much (including their admittedly good-but-not-great Almond Cream Croissant) I was happy to see that they still had a few of the Breton butter cake left and after dealing with a decidedly rude server who snorted at me "I wouldn't count on it - you have to get here early" when I asked if any more of the Almond Croissants were due up I made my way to the street to wander DePaul and enjoy...or, as it turns out, to instead try to determine how they figured what I was served to be a proper Kouign Amann as it had minimal layering and little butter flavor but instead just an ample amount of sugar used to caramelize the shell something no more interesting than a hamburger bun. Sure the canele is good and the almond croissant may be the best in Chicago, but given the poor selection, worse customer service, and lack of skill with other French Pastry I'll just exercise my better judgment and stick to doughnuts and cupcakes in the Windy City from now on. read more

How did I not know about this cafe? I love living in my neighborhood because recently on my way back home from work, I wanted a coffee, a snack and a nice place to read a book. Quick look into my yelp app and I was in Webster ave looking for Floriole. They have a cute outdoor patio available for enjoying the beautiful weather and it was full, so I utilized the upstairs area. I noticed their motto of supporting local farmers and using fresh ingredients. Their menu features good intelligensia coffee, a few baked treats n well thought-out sandwiches. I have been coming to Floriole for years and it disappoints me that year after year they continuously seem to get cheaper and cheaper with the size and probs of their sandwiches. Today I ordered the Turkey Melt for $12 (not including tax and tip) and got this measly thing (see pic below). I literally got 1.5 thin slices of turkey on bread slices that can be consumed in a couple meager bites. For the prices they charge, they should be ashamed of themselves. They have been chincing out on size for quote done time. Their old Miche bread that they used for their avocado toast used to be really thick and the slices were huge. Now they switched to a thinner, smaller slice of semolina that is 1/2 the size of what it used to be. I've been searching for a good café with a patio area for a while now. I was SO impressed and happy when I stumbled upon Floriole. The outdoor seating area is really inviting and the overall atmosphere is extremely pleasant! It was my first time here so I headed over to the sweets. I loved that this place had a broad array of sweets to choose from! The Illanka Raspberry Tart immediately caught my attention along with the chocolate pot de crème. My mom was hungry for something savory so we ordered the savory gazellete for her with goat cheese and savory vegetables. It looks a little burned out but don't let the presentation fool you. After much discussion, we ordered two cappuccinos, the Illanka, the pot de crème, the gazellete and a kouignaman. Floriole has retractable screen windows so we were sitting in the café but it felt as though we were on a patio with the doors pushed back. Anyways, the server brought our goodies to the table but we picked up our coffee. It was a spectacular day and the cool breeze was ideal. My mom said she has never had better coffee in the United States than at Floriole. She said it was so good that she relished every last sip. My mom loved the savory gazellete and she said it made her feel like she was in Europe. Basically it's a flaky crust and then inside you have goat cheese covered in spices and topped with vegetables. However, it is really well done and as a goat cheese lover, this was absolutely heavenly and some. Some bakeries are stingy on the cheese and hold back putting on too much cheese but I loved how well the cheese and vegetables complimented each other. Floriole really gives you their heart and passion when constructing perfection! My mom was not crazy about the Illanka raspberry tart and said that it was too sour. Keep in mind that all the goods here are baked fresh daily and it's made by friole staff. The waiter told us that its raspberry season and that the raspberries were freshly picked to make the tart. I believe that the staff did not wish to spoil the freshness and sweetness of the raspberries organic taste by adding sugar. I personally loved the tartness to the Illanka because the chocolate was extremely sweet and it was a good balance between the two flavors. I cherished every bite of the Illanka. My mom and I both loved the pot de crème. It is a HUGE understatement to say it was delicious, it was scrumptious. There was chocolate creme at the bottom and light whip cream at the top. I was blown away by how light the crème was yet SO rich in flavor. If I had to guess, the chocolate crème was milk chocolate. It was just heavenly. I wasn't even done taking a bite before I was eagerly scooping into the cup for more. My mom and I split the pot de crème and we still couldn't finish it all! I'm at work right now thinking of that chocolate goodness. The kouginaman was our least favorite desert. This is a sweet pastry that kind of has the texture of a croissant but looks like a decadent dessert. Anyways, the inside of the pastry was soft, tender, easy to chewy and flavorful. However, the part that ruined this dessert for me was the caramelized glaze over it. It stiffened the outside of the dessert and I felt like I was eating a jolly rancher. It was so hard. I would suggest just going easy on the glaze or whatever they put over the pastry... believe me I almost lost a tooth! It's like a cake: looks great on the outside, then left with fluff on the inside. Once you step inside, you're instantly awash in how new the place is, and how specked clean it is for a bakery/cafe. It's surprisingly big for on the inside compared to the outside. And it's intriguing to have an open view of the back kitchen from the cafe area. As for the drinks and pastries, they're pretty great. Had an almond croissant, and though sweeter than I like them and the powdered sugar really softens them up to make them easy to eat, it still made for a great snack (though also not sure if it's $4 good because it sure felt like I was paying with euros rather than greenbacks). Service was good; overall friendly staff that was attentive as soon as we walked in to the cafe. Now for the star reductions: not the place for relaxing in quaintness. Sound easily echoes all over the place, so if you try to read, study, or anything where you try to mind yourself you won't find it here. The upstairs is open space, so all the ambient noises/ conversations trickle down to you if you're downstairs. No matter where I sat, I was annoyed (especially the loud private party upstairs that resembled the first wives club with all of their nametags on). Then, there's poor lighting. If you need to read or study, have to do it up front where there's large glass panes. In the back, there's cheap looking ikea lights that don't help at all. Again tradeoff: sit up front and get swamped in noise but get some light, sit in back and you're reading in low light. Def worth visiting with a friend on a casual afternoon or if you're looking for a great change from a place like Starbucks, but if you don't want to ask yourself how you spent $9 on a drink and croissant and need to study/read/get decent quiet space, go somewhere else. They always have fresh flowers and real silverware; those little details that make the experience truly five stars. And the food is really, really good. I've never been disappointed with anything I've ordered. They offer a nice balance of fresh, locally sourced salads and savoury dishes with fruit, desserts and epic pastries. No matter the season, always a favorite, but I'd be lying if it wasn't best on warm, sunny days with the front accordion doors open and tables outside. I love coming to Floriole during the week with my laptop to get some work done upstairs where there is usually plenty of seating available (and wonderful natural light) or on the weekends with my husband and dog for a leisurely late lunch outside. I'm currently sitting in Floriole, empty before the morning rush, with just a cute little kid at the table next to me enjoying a hot pain au chocolate. My soy latte is perfect and my veggie sandwich should be out soon. I used to come here infrequently when I lived in the neighborhood, but now that I've moved away somehow I wrangled a 3x weekly morning tutoring gig nearby that just happens to coincide with the breakfast hour. I've become addicted to Floriole's savory cheddar and black pepper scone!! The quiche is also incredible, as are the sweet croissants. I love you Floriole! It's my favorite bakery in the Chi-land (and I am quite the pretentious gal when it comes to sweet treats) and I have treated it as such since it's opening. My friends threw my baby shower here, I come here often with my husband for a mini-date, my daughter (now almost 2 years old) and I come here at least weekly and she refers to Floriole not by it's rightful name but calls it "yummy! friend!" which indicates how often we come there and meet up with a buddy or two, or 6 (yes I've hosted get togethers a plenty here with mom friends and their children in tow and the crew has been oh so gracious to our crumb flying and crying antics that it keeps me coming back and singing their praises!). Another fun thing- i've never once had a bad tasting treat from them, so that's cool... I have a love verging on obsession for their chocolate croissants and iced mochas. Other faves of mine would be their daily salads (whichever one sounds best to you, they are all always good), sea salt caramels, and Chocolate Pot de Creme... yummmmm. Anyway, yes this place is amazing, try it and you won't be disappointed, just BEWARE of the weekend-crazy-busy-hardly-any-seats-available situation (which is further proof of how good their treats are), and know that finding seats during the weekend is really difficult. We've been going to Floriole every year at the Green City Market in LP so when we heard they opened up a bakery, we didn't walk but RAN there. Everything we've had was spectacular, esp. the pane cote (sp). Melted in my mouth and although I promised I would only have a few bites, I ate it all. Their quiche are out of this world amazing, truly worth every penny of the ridiculous $6/slice price. I agree w/other reviewers that this place is pricey but finally a place worth what you pay for. And not Chicago springtime, actual springtime, like birds chirping, sun shining, etc. Their use of good, high-quality ingredients would make Ina Garten blush. What a delightful morning treat! I came for the bakery aspect of Floriole but learned that this place is incredibly dynamic and has much more to offer beyond exceptional baked goods. They utilize intelligentsia coffee for their caffeinated beverages. I was quite pleased with my cafe au lait. The baked goods were absolutely phenomenal. The kouign-amann was outstanding. I had to look up what it was: dough folded with lots of butter and sugar. It was buttery, sweet and crisp. I could have eaten ten! The ham and cheese croissant was also delicious. The croissant portion with savory spices and seeds is the key feature of the dish. The ham and mustard inside are good but minimal. If you want more meat and less bread, this isn't for you. But, if you're like me, and bread takes priority, than this is a perfect treat! There were many other baked goods that looked amazing that I wanted to try! Also, I must try the deep dish quiche. But this leads me to why I gave a four star instead of five: price. Everything, except for many of the baked goods, seemed over priced. $9 for the quiche was enough to prevent me from considering it. The baked goods, for the most part, are reasonably priced. Other positives include a beautifully open, chic and we'll let space conducive to conversation and work time. Selfishly I want to keep this place a secret. The food is fantastic, the atmosphere is lovely.. my favorite cafe in all of the US. The croissants are flaky, buttery and delicious. The passionfruit tart is out of this world. The cafe au lait is perfect. Avocado toast is lemony and fresh. I could sit in the front window for hours with a good book. Enjoy it. Edit: A lovely yelp patron politely informed me that such a stellar review is deserving of more than 4/5 stars - my apologies, friends, but 4/5 will stay because the prices are incredibly high. One of the best spots in Chicago! Delicious, delicious pastries. Top tier sandwiches, frittatas, lattes.... I'm drooling thinking of it all! I feel like a kid in a candy store when I walk in and see their pastry case. ::more drool:: I've had mixed experiences with staff here, which is kind of a bummer. Definitely not enough to keep me away but several not very friendly/helpful interactions. I also love how they change things up with the seasons so there are always fresh options. One of the perks of living in Lincoln Park is being able to walk over to Floriole. The decor is appropriately simple, welcoming, clean, with that open-airy vibe. Their bakery items are incredible and it's rare that I crave such things but this French bakery will have you counting down the days until your next return. The oatmeal is outstanding as it's not your typical oatmeal, their quiches are always very savory and delicious (not your ordinary kind of quiche), the croissants full of flaky, buttery goodness, their sandwiches and greens are things you could have every single day and they would never get old... the place is just that great! Then comes the staff. . . Most of the staff is friendly and helpful but there is one employee that seems to be working every time my husband and I go in that needs a royal attitude adjustment. It's now become our little joke as to what it is going to be to send her over the edge every time we come in. We are a split party, one leaded and the other decaf. You would think that we are asking for a gyro or taquitos when we ask her for a cup of decaf. Might I add we ALWAYS add money to the tip jar and make it visible for her to see. We are early risers so we are always there right around when it opens and she often tells us that things are not ready, with no explanation as to why or when it will be ready and then she walks away in a huff. read more
