Born and raised in Maine and know Flo's well. Here's the rub: Mainer's eat red colored hot dogs from Jordan's (originated from Schondland's in Portland). Jordan's, also known as Russer Foods in Augusta, puts a little red dye No. 2 in their dogs and that's what Mainer's eat. I recollect as a kid that Flo's served the red dogs, maybe not...? If I could take a quarter star away from Flo's for the lack of red dye No. 2, I would. Everything else is the way it should be, except I might grill the buns instead of steam them. My boyfriend and I stopped here last Monday. We got there at about 11:45 so there was no line or anything, we sat right at the counter. I have to say that I really enjoyed my hot dog. They steam the hot dogs and we had is served the traditional way with mayo and the homemade relish. I was a little nervous if I would like a hot dog with mayo, I usually like my dogs with sauerkraut and mustard, but it was surprisingly very good. I do prefer my hot dogs cooked on a nice hot grill, but this was a different approach and I really enjoyed it. I will probably stop by if I am ever in Maine again. read more

I gave it three stars because Gayle (the owner) is one of the coolest people ever. The whole scene, with everyone standing in line and Gayle chatting away and effortlessly filling orders is worth the visit. We had the House Special and The Loaded. There the glowing review I thought for sure I would write slipped away. I live in a City with the BEST Hot Dogs around (shout out to Elliot's Hot Dogs). Flo's is similar as she steams the dogs. Biggest difference, Flo's also steams the buns. Makes for a nice, warm bite. Flo's is one of my favorite parts of going to Maine. I've been going there since I was in the womb and have loved Flo dogs forever. I live 5+hours away and order the relish to have them at home when we're not in Maine. DO NOT MISS THIS ONE! Flo's hot dogs are famous. Why you say? The secret sauce! People will wait in line for a hour to get a taste. And don't think you can get just one. You have to order at least 4. Flo's is always packed in the Summer so we have never been able to stop by. We finally got the chance because it's the off season. We got the loaded hot dog with mustard and two types of relish! Yes, there is a strict way of doing things, and people will roll their eyes at you if you screw up, and Gail(who as far as I know is still behind the counter) can be brusque at times, and the hot dogs are overpriced at 2.50, and the wait in summer can seem interminable but these are some of the best hot dogs you'll ever have. I first went to flo's one day a few years ago while fishing, I live 6 hours south in NH, I stopped only because I knew they sold Moxie, ordered 1 dog to go, went out to my car and ate it and i was like omg that was soooo darn good. I heard about this place on Phantom Gourmet and have driven by a couple of times on my way from Boston to Perkins Cove. We finally decided to pull over today and give Flo's hot dogs a try. I didn't have a chance to review the ordering procedure on Yelp...I should have. Flo is adorable! I think this is just one of those local treasures that I really didn't get. The hot dogs were good but next time I wouldn't get the Flo's relish. It just wasn't my thing. It was fine. I was told it was amazing and would be the best hot dog I have ever had. I'm thinking that person doesn't have alot of experience with hot dogs. It was ok but the hot dog was thin, not terribly flavorful, and steamed (not my first choice). It was cheap, $2.75 per dog. Topping were good. The line took FOREVER! The hot dogs are awesome here. Every time I vacation in southern Maine I never leave without having one. Been coming here since I was little. Only thing is they don't take credit cards. On our way home from vacation yesterday we stopped in, my friend only had a credit card on her and we had already used all our change for just one, so the woman behind the counter gave her a free one. I'm hooked! We'd driven past Flo's a couple times and it always looked packed. We knew we needed to check it out! Lucky for us, we went around 1pm on a Saturday and there were only a couple people ahead of us in line. My husband and I each tried 1 house dog and 1 loaded dog. Grew up going to York, so it holds a soft spot in my heart, normally I like my hot dogs grilled crispy burnt or fried overdone, but something about flo's always brings me back. In terms of hot dog joints or stands, or shack a rather, this place is by far my favorite. It's worth the wait in line. There's somethings about the small ceiling you almost hit your head on, and ordering with the special ordering system, to watching the woman cook your food, and getting it just the way you like it. Secret sauce is amazing. I make the drive to York from Derry NH sometimes when I can't stop thinking about Flo's. Great American staple in southern Maine for sure.... Check em out. read more

Things have changed since Flo was there. They now have home style, house style, and try to sell you a jar of sauce and tshirts. It used to be so much simpler, how many? whats on them. Love hot dog stands so had to try this place on my way out of Ogunquit. Dogs had that nice snap when you bite them and I always love a steamed bun. The ordering system is unique, but seems to work. Usually vacation in Maine every summer. Each year I stop in at least once to Flo's. You wait in line for what appears to be a run of the mill steamed dog on a average looking steamed bun. So what's the attraction ??? Maybe it's the crunch when u bite into the dog maybe it's the sweet and slightly spicy relish with mayo and celery salt. Maybe it's just the camaraderie with the other patrons stepping into a little shack that's been around for so many years I don't know. What I do know is that these are damn good hot dogs. I usually down three without missing a beat and could go back for more. I'm addicted. Although these dogs were definitely delish, we were taken aback by the fact that at least 2-3 were necessary per person & w/ each priced at 2.50, it is not an inexpensive lunch. The relish was the best! Order the house style/special; it is as good & unique as described previously. I have heard there is molasses in it, and the mayo adds a certain smoothness & tempers the sweetness ever so slightly.
