This place is so good. The truffle fries were addicting, with just the right amount of truffle flavor. The mac & cheese was creamy, cheesy, and honestly, comfort food at its best. We also tried the short ribs, pork burger, and pork chop--all three were cooked perfectly. The short ribs was super tender, the pork burger was juicy and flavorful, and the pork chop had such a nice sear with great seasoning. We were blown away by our brunch here! For starters they sat us at a nice table inside within 20 minutes on a Saturday. Since we have a 3 year old and baby in a stroller it was so nice to have a spacious table out of the sun and away from Mission Ave!! Mick the busser went above and beyond the whole time, offering my son a cherry lemonade, finding him fresh crayons to color with, and giving us great recommendations on food. We went with the fried chicken beignets and the tri tip sandwich for my hubby. Both were divine! Pro tip, get the chipotle ranch on the side to add an extra level of flavor to your food!! It was the best piece of fried chicken I've had in Oceanside, and my husband loved the tri tip sandwich. My son got a huge adult cheeseburger from the kids menu and was in love with their fries. To top it off our server Joe took amazing care of us. We changed our order TWICE (my husband is very indecisive ) and they handled everything with grace and friendliness. We love to travel down the coast on the train and today we came with 5 other couples for a day of exploring and some eats... Because we were 12 I decided to call and get a reservation while on the train just to be safe. I was going off Yelp! reviews and what a great choice it was. The place is really nicely decorated. We were seated in a large room away from the bar but it gave our loud large group some room to ourselves. Our waitress Sam was awesome, she did a great job with a huge personality. After serving our drinks we started with some appetizers. We shared fried pickles, the goat cheese the new deviled eggs. All were great, especially that goat cheese. My wife and I ordered the Shrimp & Grits and the Mussels. I don't think you can make a bad choice here. Our group was super happy with their decisions including the Fried Chicken and Beignets, Shrimp Po Boy, the Watermelon salad and a couple of burgers. We were stuffed but one in our group had to taste the banana Beignets and we all tasted it. Again, everything here is good. There was one vegetarian in our group, and since we were eating family-style, the kitchen kindly put bacon and meats on the sides of most dishes, so she could enjoy a few things too (she was a trooper as she couldn't eat most of the items here!) We basically had two of everything that wasn't fish or seafood on the menu. My favorites (in no particular order) were the bacon mac n cheese, the greens with ham hock, charcuterie board, steak, short rib, pork belly, Brussels sprouts, cooked carrots, deviled eggs, and cheesecake. I was too full to try the tri tip sandwich but that was the other favorite amongst guests. Our server was attentive. He was alerted to the occasion and had sparkling wine for the adults. The flutes were never empty! The kids in the party (two 4-year olds and a 2-year old) weren't interested in most of the food... though one did love the truffle fries! Swung in to check out the Flying Pig Pub & Kitchen in Oceanside. Surprisingly quiet for an early afternoon during the Summer, I was able to score a seat at the bar rather easily. I went with the local Karl Strauss Hill Street Blonde draft (San Diego) and the Pork Verde Chilaquiles before brunch stopped being served at 3pm. My bartender was friendly and it appeared that there was a family-run feel to the staff (including management) running around helping each other out, checking on patrons and asking how the experience was. I found that type of effort, especially during a slower period, to be indicative of the detailed attention to service excellence at the Pig. The restaurant itself was nice, open air with plenty of indoor and covered outdoor seating to people watch in Downtown Oceanside. The bar itself had a dozen seats, a two small TVs to watch the latest sporting events. The chilaquiles were served up in a small iron skillet. At first, one may think that the diminutive portion size won't be adequate, however, once you dive in, you'll find that it was packed with incredible flavor. The pulled pork was extremely tender, served with a spicy salsa verde over a bed of tortilla chips. Topped with a perfectly cooked fried egg, cotija cheese and cilantro, this dish was deep in flavor and hearty. The bathrooms are clean, well-stoked and easily accessible. The prices are comparable to other establishments in the area near the beach, but the value you get in the homemade offerings blows most other Oceanside gastropubs away. For the drinking crowd, the beer was delicious and I also witnessed a fellow patron order the Bloody Mary. I must say, it looked delicious, right down to the extremely unique and rather porkified garnish. My one gripe is that at one point they had a fruit cobbler included in a seasonal/specials menu. In the appetizer v dessert choice I chose appetizer that day. We went down to Oceanside last weekend and got lunch at the Flying Pig Pub & Kitchen shortly after we arrived. The place was an easy walk from the train station, even with a four-year-old and a stroller, in what seemed like the main downtown area a little bit in from the beach. We walked in at 12:30 on a Saturday, which must be close to peak brunch time. The place was busy and vibrant, but we got seated right away. It was a fun spot, with a certain eclectic charm. Taxidermy and mismatched lighting, and yes, some flying pig decor. Service was great, informal but attentive. I appreciated the laid-back atmosphere, which was good for our whole family. There were multiple people there with their dogs. My husband and I got beers from the extensive draft list. I went for the Northern Pine Walker Lake American amber ale, while he got the Rouleur Endo West Coast IPA. Both nice, and brewed in Oceanside and Carlsbad, respectively. I got the fried chicken sando for lunch, and it was solid, with mustard aioli, hot honey, arugula, and spicy beer pickles. The chicken was juicy and delicious--and actually, my two-year-old's tenders were the same chicken, unnecessarily gourmet for a baby meal. Definitely needed more spice, though, both in the honey and the pickles. The sandwich came with fries, which were very tasty, and I scored a small Caesar salad when a server dropped it off at our table by mistake. It was a lovely Caesar, with parmesan, tomato tarragon relish, garlic croutons, and crispy garlic. This was a pleasant, satisfying lunch, with all difficulties arising from our own kids' behavior. Booked a last minute reservation on a Friday night after seeing some stellar reviews. We came around 6:30PM and the place was bustling! We ordered the Mac and cheese with the fried chicken on top and the tri tip sandwich. The Mac and cheese was rich and creamy but I would recommend skipping the fried chicken. It costs an extra $8.50 for a pretty skimpy piece that's frankly quite bland. The tri tip sandwich was very tender, but the minimal amount of meat on it was a bit disappointing. It reminded me of a Philly cheesesteak more than anything. The bread on the sandwich was fantastic though and so were the fries. The service was awesome and the decor is cool. If you're looking for a good Mac and cheese, this one is pretty good! read more

I have had this place bookmarked for a thousand years--ok, maybe just a hundred--and finally visited on s Sunday evening. They have outdoor patio seating but the interior decor is charmingly chaotic, and I mean that in the best way. The cocktail, beer, and wine menu is strong. I tried the Smoke Show which is made with mezcal and, as the menu indicated, it was a "heavy hitter." It was extremely boozy and smoky. I thought it was awesome but you have to like booze and smoke to enjoy this one. Normally, I absolutely love deviled eggs but I think the ones here, while very creative, were a miss. They are quite different than normal deviled eggs, which is just fine, but they seemed very dry to me. The filling wasn't as luxuriously creamy as normal deviled eggs. I give them points for the very interesting ingredients, however. The short ribs were incredibly tender and delicious and the portion size was generous . The grits under the ribs was fine but needed seasoning. Alas, there is no salt on any of the tables. I have no doubt our terrific server would have brought me some amazing gourmet salt if I had asked but hey, no big deal. I loved the ribs. The scallops entree over risotto was very good. If you like scallops, give these a try. The decor is attractive and funky, the service was outstanding, and most of the food was very good. A couple of misses but I would gladly return. I got a cold brew cocktail and the hubs got an IPA. The fried pickles are a MUST! We then shared the blackened fish sandwich with the truffle fries and the little gems Caesar. There is only one fish I don't like--mahi mahi. I neglected to ask what the fish was and I think this was it. Not my cup of tea. But the hubs loved it--lots of flavor and texture on the sandwich.
