Came here last minute with my family after reservations fell through at another restaurant and we all talked about how much better Flying Pizza was anyway! I was hunting in the Dayton area for East Coast style pizza. This is not the cracker-style pizza that you usually find in dayton, but pizza with a dough crust. I stopped by Flying Pizza and sampled a couple of slices, New York style and Sicilian. The New York style is more like East Coast pizza, but it really isn't true New York style. NY pizza is very thin and the slices are huge. The Sicilian was true to form. They had the slices cooked too much in the first place, so when they were reheated, the bottoms were like rock. I would assume it is better if you get a whole pie. The NY style was ok. It was very bland. The cheese could be better quality and the sauce could use more flavoring. The Sicilian seemed a bit better, but that might be because the dough was a large player. It is a good place if you are downtown and want a quick bite. The prices are good and it would be fun to bring kids to. If you are searching for great pizza, this isn't it. read more

These guys have some great pizza! My fiancé from NY said that they are comparable to a NY pizza joint, and my mom used to eat there when she was pregnant with me, so I guess I'm a little biased. This business is a class act. The wife and I dropped by and we decided to try it out. My father had a stone oven in his pizza shop. The crust is amazing coming out of the stone ovens and cannot quite be replicated on a conveyor. You can buy a slice or a pie. We tried a couple slices and decided to buy a pie to bring home to my sons. The oven turned 50 yrs old today and it is working great. They pile on the toppings so if you are watching calories pay attention to that. They make the pizza tossed right in the window. I talked with them for about 10 to 15 mins about this establishment and everyone made us feel at home. This is truly a "GEM" in the gem city. It is New York style slices so if that's not your thing this may not be the place for you. We will be back and I will bring my father to try this place. I am sure he will love talking about old times in our pizza shop over a slice. Lastly come in off of First street and park in the garage attached to the shop they validate for 1 hr. This place bills itself as being real New York Pizza. And the owner, who we spoke with, claims to have lived in New York. When we, two boys from New York, walked in, we chatted with him. He did his best to serve up the New York attitude, but the pizza he served up was not even remotely anything like you get in New York. The crust was just all wrong. It cracked when you fold it, as if it was made from graham crackers or matzoh. New York Pizza crust is firm on the bottom but chewy and has bite. If properly prepared, it is made from high gluten flour. And that gives it that New York Pizza Crust consistency. When I was a kid, when I would walk to the subway station in the morning, I would walk past a few New York Pizza places. They were not yet open for business, but the delivery trucks had already dropped off a few sacks of high gluten flour and that flour sat I the doorways. Every place used it. Flying pizza does not seem to use this. The dough was stiff and rigid and when you folded it to eat it, it cracked spilling the tasteless sauce and ersatz cheese out of the void between the two separated halves. The sauce was flavorless and the cheese was a DuPont experiment in synthesis gone wrong. We ordered sausage slices and the sausage was crumbled over the top of already prepared cheese slices. In New York, the sausages are always sliced then after cooking the links. Not here. The Flying Pizza is one of the things I miss the most about living in Dayton. Decided to go downtown for lunch one day and found this gem. First off, there's a parking garage in the building they're in so you have guaranteed parking - If you ask them for a parking pass, they'll give you a sticker so your first hour is free in the garage! Then when you walk in, you're greeted with the best customer service I have witnessed in a long time. You feel welcomed and like family. Secondly, the pizza... WOW. Best pizza I've had in my whole life and $3 for a huge slice is a great deal. Cheese is my favorite but they have plenty others. No. We have been searching for great-tasting pizza since we moved from the Pittsburgh area 10+ years ago. This is not it. It is round and cut into triangles, rather than little cracker pieces most Dayton-area places serve. The crust was about the only decent thing about this pie. The sauce had the texture and taste of the "Chef Boy R'Dee" boxed pizza kits from the grocery store. The "pepperoni" was barely warm and looked and tasted like very thinly sliced Spam. In a word it was Gross. The sliced meatballs were okay but again, barely warm. I'm guessing they put the toppings on after the pizza cooks? The cheese was stringy and tasteless, albeit generous. Also, no free refills on soda (and they use crushed ice) so sip the drink and don't worry, nothing on the pizza will make you thirsty (unless you get anchovies). read more

I've been eating at The Flying Pizza since 1971. If you haven't had their Sicilian Squares, you're missing the whole point! Thick dough, great cheese and sause, light and crispy on the bottom. The staff is the friendliest I've seen and very eager to please. Great atmosphere. A big plus is you can now park in the garage right behind the store (with parking validation). Very good family owned pizza joint in downtown Dayton. The owners are usually on site, & the quality of the food is great. Service is friendly & often they joke around with customers. You can eat in or carry out. The place is small, but clean. My favorite is the sicilian style, which is like getting pizza on top of garlic bread. The sauce is filled with garlic chunks, the dough is thick with a crispy bottom. You can also get a thinner, hand tossed crust. Either type of pizza is available by the slice or whole pie. You will smell like garlic after you eat here but it is worth it!! Parking can be a real pain at this location, unless you know that you can park in the garage that enters off 1st Street near Main. There are a few designated spots for Flying Pizza customers right behind the store. You go through the glass doors & right there they are, easy peasy!! They validate parking for their customers, so it's free. You can also just find a meter. Be careful of the meter maids, though!! Make sure you feed that meter adequately or they will get you. read more

Price: $12.95 Size: 12" We've heard about this place as being the local "go-to" for real New York style pizza in Dayton. We called in ahead to check store hours, but they had closed one hour prior for a private party. However, since the manager was still there, he was willing to make us a pizza to go, "I don't care about store hours--If I'm here, I'll make you a pizza". The pizza was a medium crust with a crispy bottom and doughy top. It was a good ratio of cheese to sauce, but we believe the pie could have used a few more minutes cooking before serving. I've been to every Flying Pizza parlor except for the one on Main St. in Dayton. Until this week. As with all of them, the experience brought me closer to my hometown of New York. Flying Pizza is my favorite place when I'm only in the mood for a slice or two, they're one of the few places in town that sells it that way. It's New York style and very good, but I wish they had some more imaginative toppings available - it's all pretty standard stuff. They're friendly and it's a family owned local business so I'm inclined to go that way from the start. I was in the downtown area on business and needed somewhere to eat lunch because I was starving. So I pulled out my phone and got on yelp to find somewhere close by. Flying Pizza was 3rd on the list and I kinda wanted pizza and I saw that it was sold by the slice and that is always plus for me. The pizza here is a new York style pizza. The pizza was good but nothing to rave about. I have had far worse new York style pizza. There's is actually good. The staff here is nice and friendly. The dining area and bathrooms were clean. I would recommend Flying Pizza to anyone who needed quick bite to eat. read more

We used to eat here once a week when we lived in Downtown Dayton and for us, this is a must have stop on our visits home. It's just that good. I'd like to share my husband's experience at Flying Pizza today. He went up to the counter and a young girl greeted him. He asked for 2 slices of pizza with anchovies. She opened the can of anchovies and began making derogatory comments to her coworkers about how this was going to ruin her day, how she won't be able to eat lunch today, and on and on. Yes, my husband was standing there listening to her as well as all the other customers. She was not wearing gloves and she used her hands to place the anchovies directly on his pizza. She took his money and went to make a pizza for the next customer in line. She didn't wash her hands. She didn't wear gloves. Money is one of the nastiest items that people come in contact with. It is loaded with bacteria that causes staph, strep, and pneumonia. Besides being offended by her rude and inappropriate comments to the workers about his pizza, he thought about the health risks they were forcing upon the other patrons with their unsanitary conditions by not washing their hands...or their mouths. Let's hope they clean up their act. There wasn't a rating lower than 1 star. read more

I've ate Flying Pizza since I went to Patterson Co-op in the 70's. Not anymore. The pizza is good, but the staff could use a lesson in manners. I went there today (after a 14 mile bike ride to get there) only to be treated as less than human by the aforementioned young girl who didn't want to take my order as I am obviously too inhuman to wait on. She barked at one of her co-workers to wait on me, just as two of his buddies entered and he proceeded to ignore me and waited on his buddies. Do yourself a favor - try COUSIN VINNY'S - BETTER PIZZA - BETTER PRICE- and you'll be treated with respect when you pick up your pizza. read more
