Food was okay. Got an egg salad sandwich and a cabbage roll and it was over $15, which is a little steep for the quality. The cabbage roll sauce was quite sweet and thick and a little bland. Egg salad was good, bread was delicious and soft, the lettuce on my sandwich was unwashed as I discovered after a few bites of it tasting "dirty" I discovered some dried dirt. Pickle was soggy and not crunchy at all. The woman working the counter was very nice! Service was a little slow but to be expected during lunch hours. Food For Thought Deli was brought to my attention a while ago by some friends of mine. I have been attempting to get here for some time and finally it was like it was meant to be. I'm always down for a good deli sandwich. This place isn't very big on the inside, but big enough. There are some tables off to the side and some window seats if you want to eat in house, which lots of people do, or you can just take it to go with you. Hours aren't long her, but that does not stop the business from rolling on in here. We walked up to the counter and was checking out the menu hanging overhead. Within seconds we were placing our order, it's like second nature in here, a true deli. Our orders placed, order ticket in hand, we grabbed our drinks and went to find ourselves a seat. Seating at the tables is much like communal, which isn't bad. Soon enough our food was ready. Of course I couldn't pass up a hot roast beef sandwich. I kind of got my wires crossed here and thought that I was in a diner instead of a deli. But it was still the best thing to go with, at least in my opinion. The roast beef was amazing, like fall apart amazing. Flavored amazingly and covered in gravy. When I say covered in gravy I should say that it was swimming in gravy. So much so that no matter how much you took with every bite there was more to still sop up. I probably could have even drank what was left over, but I didn't, don't worry, I'm not that much of an animal. The fries that accompanied this were amazing. Small enough to eat a bunch at a time and to act like a shovel to get more gravy with every scoop. I do have to say that it was a bit odd to have that cold, crisp pickle on the plate. Especially because everything on the plate was piping hot. But it was a nice end note of the plate, cooled everything down. It was a bit pricey, but I think it was worth every penny. I also have to note that I thought that the staff were a bit rude when we walked in here at first. But after spending some time in here I saw this is just how they interacted with everyone that came through the door. I got the #1 triple decker sandwich which had corned beef, pastrami, swiss, coleslaw & russian dressing on rye bread. This sandwich was without question in the top 5 best sandwiches I've ever eaten in my life. Absolutely insanely delicious. I don't usually like coleslaw but theirs was incredible on this sandwich. The rye bread was soft and super flavorful. I also had their matzo ball soup which very good too and so was their macaroni salad, the macaroni noodles were perfectly cooked. My daughters and I went there yesterday after visiting the Carnegie Museum. Food For Thought carries Boars head meats which are definitely my favorite. They have a full line of soups and salads and sandwiches too choose from. I had a matzo ball soup and a pastrami on rye with mustard. The matzo ball soup was really good and would definitely get again. The pastrami sandwich was among the best I have had. The service was fantastic the staff where fast and friendly. Only two complaints I have are #1 prices where a bit higher than most deli's and #2 the portion of pastrami on the sandwich was way too little. I have been too many deli's and generally you get 3x the amount of meat on the sandwich. Food for thought was good and I would go there again. I do recommend them, But go into it knowing you will pay more price wise and get less. Even know they are more expensive they are worth a visit as the food is really good and service as well really good. read more

It's four mini sandwiches surrounded by fresh cut fries. The meats they use on their sandwiches are all boars head or better. The corned beef is the best in Pittsburgh. Been here a couple times, both were really great experiences. The first time, went for a brunch and I absolutely love corned beef hash so I'm always glad when I can try it somewhere new. As a disclaimer, I really don't like sandwiches so I can't say I've tried them from here but that corned beef hash (extra well done) was so tasty! That was a few months ago but I needed a quick lunch today and stopped by for chicken tenders and fries. Kinda wish there was a larger portion but I was pretty hungry so I think I was pretty biased. I really miss Food For Thought. Favorite place to go for Saturday breakfast- the menu is huge. However, my favorite thing to order is extremely simple: the egg and cheese on a croissant. The croissant is huge and buttery, freshly scrambled REAL eggs not some thin patty of hardboiled crap and just the right amount of cheese. I love this old-school deli. They have freshly sliced Boars Head meats, and very good coleslaw, macaroni salad, chili, and chicken soup. Their turkey Rachel (turkey, Swiss, coleslaw and Russian dressing on grilled rye) is one of my all-time favorite sandwiches. You can also order meats etc by weight, so sometimes I get all the fixings to go (including pickles!) and then have deli sandwiches for days at home. I went here for lunch in the summer. The Deli is a short walk from where I work so it was an easy choice. Food For Thought is like a traditional deli where they take your order at the front, you get a ticket and then wait. I ordered a Reuben, fries and an orange cream soda. $17 in total, which is a bit pricy for a sandwich and fries. I must say though, the food was pretty dang good. I know a lot of my coworkers will come here a good, casual lunch with friends. The seating area is a pretty good size, but will fill up at lunchtime. Definitely will go here again, and absolutely would recommend IF you're in the area, not worth traveling for. read more
