This review is for their bakery. I've been gate keeping a bit and I'll apologize now. FoodMaxx sells the best bolillos and cheaper than I've found at my usual neighborhood panaderias. When I stop by it's usually for their bolillos after I stop by my favorite carniceria for milanesa and carne asada. Other times I've been in were specifically for sales and imported items. This Summer I look forward to adding their bolillos to all of my bbqs and lake days. Their bolillos are baked fresh daily and I love getting their fairly early to get my pick. I highly recommend if you're a bolillo lover or like making your own tortas at home, stop by for their fresh bolillos and give them a try. read more

I and my family have enjoyed coming to FoodMaxx on Prater Way for the great deals on meat and we usually find exactly what we are looking for. This last time we went shopping there was not so great. We found everything we needed. When we went to check out, there was one cashier and one employee helping self checkout. Since the one cashier had multiple people in line and was in conversation, we decided to use self checkout. We have had problems with this self checkout in the past, but there was an employee to help. As soon as we started ringing things up, the self checkout employee disappeared. The screen froze and we could not continue. Around this time, another customer was having problems with their self checkout as well. The cashier had to drop their line to come help us. At this point, they were the only employee at any register. They proceeded to unfreeze our screen and then argue with the customer next to us saying that they had done something wrong to make their screen freeze, blaming them. Then our screen froze again. After unfreezing both our screens a few times, the employee told us "This is why you need to come to my register instead." I looked over to their register. There were still at least three people in their line. We had over half our order scanned in and it froze again. With no one else to help in sight, and with the poor service we had already experienced, we could not continue with our purchase. We would have been more than happy to pay for what we had already scanned, but we could not get to the screen to pay, as it was frozen. We waited another few minutes with our arm raised and no one helped us, as they still had a line. We ended up leaving all our would-be purchases at the self checkout and left empty-handed. I understand the one single employee was probably very frustrated at the fact they had no help and was forced to work both the register and self checkout at the same time. This, however is no excuse to blame customers and make us feel like we did something wrong when the machine is clearly having issues. This being said, I am SURE that not all of the Prater FoodMaxx employees behave this way as we have had great service in the past and have encountered several very friendly employees. The store is always clean and well-organized. Later, I called the SaveMart customer line, as that is the only phone number available we could find for this location. They seemed uninterested in my experience or helping in any way. They did not ask to confirm a location or address. I will probably not be back in the near future. We live closer to a Raley's, and although the prices are a little higher, I would rather pay more for vastly better, kinder service, with registers that are in good, working order. I really hope to be able to revisit FoodMaxx on Prater in the future when things are hopefully less hectic. read more

The prices are good and comparable to other discount food markets such as Sav Mart, Winco, etc. However, the store is a dump and I've been in inner city stores look much nicer than this decrepit Food Maxx store. While it is clearly a warehouse store, the floor is bare and cracked in many places, the store was not clean, register service inadequate, and even the carts made us feel like we've been to physical therapy from pushing them. On the outside we did not see any sign pointing to the entrance which was about 1/2 block away from the handicapped parking place we used, so we had to walk. There is only one entrance and that is off to the right front side which is deceiving when you look at the store from the parking lot. All in all, I do not recommend this store when there are many other stores in the area that have comparable prices and make you feel welcome and comfortable. Did they raise the prices? I've come here for produce and quick picks for a while due to the convenient location for me. I don't get meat here as it usually seems older and not as good quality. Today the 9oz bag of Fritos Scoops was $5.49 which seemed extremely high. The regular size bag was over $7. I don't even want to know what they would charge for the family size. I understand prices are up everywhere but the whole premise of this place is good prices so that was strange to me. Produce overall is usually pretty good as long as it is recently stocked. I have waited at the self check out for a while waiting for help or just waiting because the machines are fickle or broken. This is the first time I've shopped here. Are used to go to FoodMaxx over in Vallejo California. But this supermarket had the best deal on holiday turkeys that I could fine. $.29 a pound if I spend $25. And everything is so cheap, we ended up getting all of our holiday dinner needs. From cans of olives that we're only a dollar to see you need brown sugar for $1.19. Great prices. The produce worker helped me find the 3 types of apples needed for a fresh apple pie. We needed Pink Lady, gala and golden delicious. The apples were not labeled correctly and he apologized. He then offered to help us find other stuff. This service went above what I usually see at discount grocery stores. In the butcher area, I needed to find a 20 lb turkey and the largest I found was 16 lbs. Again, a worker from the meat department Offered to help and she went in the back to search for a 20lb turkey. She actually came out with 2 of them. Awesome help. I usually go to a different store for my family needs but now will start coming here. read more

i tried it. prices are to high, for. offerings. i found issues with meat and customer service. when i called to return chicken, ( smelly slimmy chicken) the manager wanted me to make an appointment? when i did return with receipt, i had to wait 20 minutes for someone to be able to do it. they were all in meetings. the woman that helped me didn't want to hear anything. i got very sick handling the chicken. also, just rude shoppers. i didn't enjoy it ! if i'm spending my cash, you can at least recognize me as a customer. a paying customer. being respectful and offering good customer service is free. the frozen food on sale, had freezer burn. the area is super schetchy. there was a overdosed guy, that looked dead near the entrance. a lot of police presence. read more

To the man working the self check out area tonight at 5:15 pm, I have never seen someone be so rude and inconsiderate to customers... and employees. I can guarantee this man was the manager, and three customers in a row needed his assistance with something. He walks over each time and belittles the customer for needing assistance...Telling them that if they need help, they shouldn't come to self check out. someone needed to tell this man that it was his job to help, that's why he's there and gets paid for. Additionally, as I was walking out, he started yelling at an employee who came to ask him a question. It's been a long time since I was this appalled by customer service... Now I stepped up and asked what was going on and the cashier said it was none of my buisness. My recent experience here was by far my best. The store was stocked well and I had no problem finding everything I needed for a last minute BBQ and then some. The staff were all very helpful and kind. The self-checkout was up and running fairly smoothly and there were multiple checkers as the lines grew. I am hopeful the store stays this way for the future. read more

Looking for the most GHETTO grocery store experience? CONGRATS! You've found it!! This is THE WORST grocery store not only in Sparks, but quite possibly in the entire area. For starters, they never have any cashiers. When you are lucky to find one, they act like they're ready to blow their brains out! Flat out MISERABLE! Self checkout, you ask? DON'T BOTHER! The machines are always flashing, as in out of order! Nobody seems to give two f***s what is going on. Shelves are usually bare. Meat section not so great. Sparks is sorely in need of a decent grocery store. Smith's is OK, but not great. Scolari's and Raley's require you to take a second out on your house. The most ridiculous prices around. There were three pallets on the floor, with three employees there to stock the shelves. It was ten minutes to four. The SUPERVISOR said, "Well. it's almost quitting time, so let's just call it." And they walked off with the pallets not stocked. Now I was taught and teach, that you work hard all day, even the last ten minutes. I was also a store manager for Target for 12 years. This store is in trouble and it all starts with pride in what you do. I promise you, if they hustled and worked hard, then some customer coming up that aisle would have gotten what they wanted. And my meat was old and stinky. There is no excuse for that. None. So pile of donkey turds stands, but sometimes I don't want to call out people. This store is dirty, from the shopping carts on down. Only store in the area that has reserved parking spaces for lazy people to park and have their groceries brought out to them closer to the door than handicapped spaces for disabled persons who actually go in the store. Produce is iffy. Celery has dirt on the bottom, romaine has mud inside of it, jicama is moldy, onions are soft, and the automatic water sprayer keeps greens sopping wet so they go bad as soon as you get them home. Usually only 1 or 2 cashiers and long lines all the time. Self check-out usually has 3 b out of service stations out the the 6 available and no one comes for a VERY LONG TIME if something goes wrong during the check-out process. read more

I guess I'm pretty hard on places I depend on and spend my money at. Foodmax is convenient for me. I shop there because it's fast, close and usually has the items I want. Unfortunately, and I'll blame this on the backed up shipping and lack of employees, a lot of items are not priced. And a lot of things are not consistent. Filet Mignon? Once in a blue moon. And I asked a meat dept employee to text me when it's on the shelves. She did once, and I was very happy. I miss Save Mart. I miss the US Bank being in there, I miss the pharmacy, the bakery, the deli and the meat counter. I haven't bought fish there since foodmax took over. I love the employees. I've shopped at Foodmaxx at least 50 times in recent months and find it to be a great resource for my Indian-grocery needs. The staff has always been friendly, and the store clean. I have no clue from where Tim R's bizarre opinions come. Perhaps his donkey observations are based in his familiarity with "animal husbandry". Whatever floats your boat Timmy. I have thoughts about your "stinky meat" comment: you may do well paying more attention to your personal hygiene. And "low class"? Welcome to 1950 Timbo. I came into FoodMaxx for the first time. It's not unlike any other big box market. With one exception, they have a better than normal organic section with items usually only found at higher end farmers markets. I do a lot of juicing so I was thrilled I could find everything in one stop. Their fruits and veggies were all nicely presented and were fresh. They carry Dave's Killer Bread, my fave. And, it was fresh. I didn't spend much time in the other parts of the market, but they all looked status quo. They do provide anti bacterial wipes at the entrance and I advise their use. Double wash everything you buy. For some reason these types of markets never seem clean. read more

They never have enough cashiers, usually one and a long line. If there is a problem at the self-checkout, the one cashier will leave you while checking you out and go help at self-checkout. They've done this to me 4 times. Today I was there, and they were putting out fresh produce. The person put it out for stocking and left for about 30 minutes. I did my shopping and came back, and I asked the person for bean sprouts and was given a hard time. I checked out and took the receipt to my computer and entered the survey number at the bottom and the survey came back and said the number had expired but it says on the receipt take within 3 days. This is the second time I've had this happen with a receipt number. I guess they really don't want to know what you think. So, I decided to review them here. If you appreciate Winco/Walmart pricing, but hate the overly crowded and huge store layout this place might be for you. I have found the prices here quite good overall. They do seem to fluctuate a bit more than some other stores I've been to - from excellent to just about average, but overall they continue to be quite a bit more affordable overall than their Savemart counterparts, as well as nearby Raleys/Smiths/Safeway. They are also quite diligent about keeping things in stock that I frequently use, although your experience may vary depending on what it is you shop for I suppose. I personally haven't run into any issues in this regard. I'm giving this place 4 stars, not because the store is fancy or wows you with over the top customer service and artisan goods, but because of overall value and convenience. There is plenty of parking, it's close to home, the pricing is very reasonable, the selection is above average, and the store is fairly compact and well laid out (bisected frozen food selection aside) making it easy to get what you need and be on your way. And they usually don't have long lines when I visit. I think the self checkout/bagging helps a lot in this regard. Something I don't personally mind. Overall, this place has a really good basic grocery store format that I happen to appreciate. Small nitpicks/suggestions: Samsung Pay doesn't always work at their registers even though they take it, the bath and beauty selection is horrid for even basic stuff like deodorant, and the frozen foods really should be unified into one space. read more

I'll drop by every few weeks as a supplement to my weekly grocery shopping. I wait for the circular to come in before deciding if it's worth it to go. This is a discount grocer and you shouldn't expect it to be Raleys or Whole Foods style. The layout is somewhat similar to SAK n Save when you enter. You have to bag your own groceries. The cheap deals are upfront and at the end of the aisle. You come upon the produce section after seeing the cheap deals and it's easy to navigate the store. Some examples - 3 cucumbers for a dollar. Tomatoes 49 cents / lb. Asparagus 1.47 / lb . Oranges 3lbs for 1 dollar. Garlic 3 for a dollar. Whole milk 2.90 gallon. These items are a good deal if your meal base needs these ingredients. The produce is similar in quality as you would see at Save-Mart (Go Figure). It's just cheaper than Save-Mart. Buyer beware because a lot of their items are the same price or a little more than other grocery stores. This grocery doesn't have everything you need but they have a good variety of food available. They did not have coconut milk and the discounted cuts of meat. I feel it's worth it to go if you know what items to buy that will save you money. read more

This store took over where Savemart used to be located, and I couldn't be happier! Had no idea how much money we were wasting on food at Savemart - in contrast, this Foodmaxx has great prices. I normally purchase close to the same batch of food items every week. Previously, my grocery bill was around $160.00, but since this store opened it has dropped to around $110 or less. You do need to bag your own groceries (which is a down side to some people) - but I actually like this system. It gives me the chance to group certain food types together, making it easier & faster to put away when I get home. Also, I can avoid having to stand there and make uncomfortable small talk while the cashier rings things up! The selections are good, the shelves are always stocked. Their meat department has quality products -tender steaks / tritips, and nice chicken fillets with very low prices. The only reason I didn't give the store a 5 star rating this: they have no seafood department and no deli. This makes it kind of inconvenient, because if I want fresh seafood or deli meat, I have to make a trip to a different store. However, the prices here are so low, I don't mind. The important part is that this store saves me about $200 a month! read more

This place has some great deals but it is also similar in price to many other stores with some items. You can find deals on meat (we can get large beef chucks for $10) and you can often get 2 Liter bottles of soda for $0.99. Their pet food and produce is priced like other places. So, I'm adding another star to my updated review for Food Maxx simply because they seem to have improved the lighting a great deal! It is now not only much brighter, obviously, but the vibe inside the store has improved a bit, too! I'm still bummed out at their lack of brands, variety or flavors and sizes, the fact that their produce and bakery sections are so darn tiny! I was happy to see that they carry Soyrizo in their decent selection of vegetarian/vegan items (they can be found in said produce section). I was able to explore a little more today during this trip and I quickly came to the conclusion that I have a Love/Hate relationship with Food Maxx! I love that it's so close to my house, I live that their prices are pretty decent on most items, I love that they carry Jordana Cosmetics! I hate that their selection is so limited, I hate that it seems they did not utilize the space they are in to best of their ability, and I hate that there is NO DELI! The Salad Dressing selection is a sad joke, people want more than Ranch. They have ONE flavor of Brianas Dressing, and they don't even carry ANY Annie's Natural Dressings of which the Shitake Mushroom and Asian Seasame are staples in my house. Their overall selection is just WEIRD!! And, I have to mention my cashier in had today! OMG!! -I won't use her real name for many reasons, so let's call her "Maxine". She was OUT THERE! I don't know what was going on with her, well I think I do but I'm not sure if it's appropriate for me to say, but she had the attention span of a Goldfish and was so strange in her words and actions, it was a very awkward, uncomfortable, and trying experience. I could write at least 5 pages on the whole encounter and the complete absurdity of it all! Instead, let me relay this tiny tid bit. I had about 20 items and brought my own bags (you bag your own groceries), and all my items were scanned and we're even all packed up and ready to go! "Maxine" was VERY talkative, hyper, and fidgety and again, couldn't focus. She had started talking to the person in line behind me, which is fine, but I'm standing there with my card in my hand ready to pay and for 2 minutes she kept talking and it was like she had totally forgotten I was there waiting to pay or even that she was at work! It was just STRANGE!! Finally, I had to very LOUDLY interject and be a little rude telling her I wanted to pay and leave! "Maxine" looked at me startled and I had to tell HER how to run my EBT card FIRST then pay for my non-food items and WHY it HAS to be done in that order. I don't know man, the whole interaction was very strange and her behavior reminded me of someone that may or may not be having too much fun outside of work with certain ummmm, substances. I don't like saying that, but if it looks like a duck.......FoodMaxx has once again left me on the fence about whether or not I will return. Geez. read more

This is not my neighborhood so I was not aware this store existed. MY sister said let us try this new store while we are in this part of town, Ok, so we did and now that is that. It looks much larger from the outside than in. It is a completely depressing ghetto store. Truly unattractive, dark and as already stated, depressing. The employees seemed manic running here and there cutting one off. The prices we checked were not good, in fact, the dog food we were going to buy was fifteen cents more a small container than Smiths and ten cents more than Target. Considering I buy 14 at a time, that adds up. Other prices were of equal disparity. I am so glad this is not the only store in town. Well, first time visit and its like a mini Winco or Sac'n Save just slightly cheaper on the produce. They had a good variety and everything was organized. They have both selfserve and regular checkout lanes. I think if i come back to visit i will need to be on the area but im content for a first timer. read more

I went into the establishment at 1130 pm. As i was finishing my shopping needs for my kids lunch. This tall slender man approached us and said we have two minutes or we cannot pay. At that time i questioned wether it was store policy. He responded with " what are you on bro screaming in my face. My wife asked me to just go to the car Then I left the store and my wife tried to pay for the food. She apologized for any confusion and tried to just pay. He continued harassing my wife yelling at her saying I was harassing other customers. She told him that there were no other people even in the store. She then told him that her cousin had actually been a foodmax manager and the registers don't just close out by themselves and He responded with "oh you know things go do some more drugs". He then made her leave without any of our groceries and we had to pay our babysitter for twice the time because we had to go to a second store and start over. I am a combat veteran and my wife and I never used any kind of drugs in our life. We were very upset and offended by the whole situation. read more

You get a discount-warehouse atmosphere, limited customer service (bag your own groceries), and a very limited selection, all at prices equal to or even higher than what you'd pay at a nice full-service supermarket like Raley's or Safeway. This is the nearest place to my house, but I only go here when I need to grab one or two things in a hurry, and don't have time to go out to Winco. After walking to the entrance on the west side I tried to leave at the east side and there was a pile of boxes and carts pushed into the space by the exit. This place is a fire hazard.
