Foodcraft is located inside "The Lodge" at Gulf State Park and this was my first time actually going inside The Lodge and it was far nicer inside than I expected from the outside. They have several food spots located here and Foodcraft seems to be the best lunch option here. You also have a nice view of the Gulf from the back patio here. As it was a very nice day I chose to sit outside on the patio to enjoy the view with my meal. My server was fantastic and really on top of things and provided some of the best service I've ever had in Lower Alabama. I decided to order their pecan encrusted mahi-mahi which was a winner to my taste buds! Overall I was very happy with great service, good food and a marvelous view! read more

Found this place on a search and wanted to check it out based on the rating. Made an easy reservation. Didn't know it was part of a hotel/resort, but that made no difference. Parking was accessible and plentiful. Definitely a quiet atmosphere during our visit We assumed it was a favorite local spot, but was definitely not busy during the lunch hour we went on a weekday. The hostess was super friendly and welcomed us in to our reservation. Kept it simple and just ordered two lunch items. Only appetizer we hit was oysters and were good. Small but fresh. The food was good - delicious even. I had the snapper. And our waitress was kind and efficient. However, the manager Ron, spilled two lemon drop cocktails on my friend and I and our dresses were soaked, our feet and arms were sticky. The table had to be re-set and we had to go to the bathroom to wash our arms and attempt to dry our dresses. We were kind. Said "it's no big deal" because accidents do happen. Ron brought out a mop, it was big deal. At the end of the evening, one would expect some sort of a discount for sitting sticky and wet in a nice restaurant, but not Ron. We had to ask for how he was going to handle it, and he flippantly said "I guess I can take off part of your drinks". For a table of 5, and a total bill of over $250 he gave us a $14 discount. Terrible customer service, so for that reason I hesitate to recommend it. The food was good, but I've never been more disappointed in a mangers idea of customer service. read more

I love their Breakfast Buffet! They have everything you could want from fresh fruit, pastries to scramble eggs, grits, sausage, bacon, sausage and gravy and an excellent omelette station. The drink assortment is great with juices, milk, tea and coffee. You can also get your favorite cocktails from the bar. Addison our server was on his A game today and made us feel very welcome! Very cute restaurant with a great view inside a hotel. The menu all looked good. I have a shellfish allergy so my options are always limited. We got the catch of the day that came with Brussels and risotto and it was just okay. I think the food is average for the higher price point. We ate here on three occasions, one for breakfast and the other two, dinner. The breakfast buffet was One of the best I've ever had. Perfect date night ambience. The service was exceptional except our last visit seemed the waitress was friendly but really got side tracked easily. Overall good experience. For dinner, we had the ribeye steak and fish and chips which was by far the best dish! The next night my wife had ribeye and I got the catch of the day which was a red snapper grilled. Was good but fish and chips was a home run. Personal opinion, Disappointed with Bacon jalapeño shrimp appetizer. . . No easy way to eat it and just didn't wow us flavor wise. The BEST meal we have had all year!!!! This place is gorgeous and watching the sunset over the beach as we ate was magical! Our server was so sweet and personable she made our dinner such an enjoyable experience. The drinks, appetizer and our meals were all cooked and or made to perfection! Standouts were the worst wedge salad I've ever had-The dressing was literally blue cheese from the wishbone bottle and half the lettuce was brown and the worst steak frites I've ever had-terribly seasoned steak and horrible cut of meat full of fat. I am a local. My wife and I were pleased with the outside seating which has a great view. I ordered the scallops which were good. She ordered the fried oysters. We asked if the oysters were standards. The waiter looked puzzled. We explained that standard oysters are not huge. He told us he could check. He came back and told us he could get them to be picked so all were standard. We asked how many were on the plate. He told us 12. They brought 6 and they were HUGE. Not standards. I asked if they shucked them in the restaurant and were told yes. NO they weren't. If you pick the small shells, they are standard. I finally got him to admit they came pre-shucked in a container and they just grab so many out and throw them in the grease. An upscale restaurant knows better. The manager came out and said they didn't have any standards. So why didn't y'all bring out what we asked for. Couldn't explain. Also ordered a kettle one martini, very dry straight up with no olives or anything. Brought me a dirty martini. I had to take it to the bar and explain. Bartender didn't know difference between a straight up martini and a dirty martini. Sad. Not going back. read more

We ate at Foodcraft every morning for breakfast while staying at The Lodge, and overall it was a great experience. The first day, our waitress wasn't very attentive, but service improved noticeably on the second day with a different waitress. We opted for the breakfast buffet each time, and it was really good! Honorable mention goes to the waffle maker and the made-to-order omelet station -- both were fantastic. The fruit was also impressively fresh and flavorful. Just note that they stop serving breakfast at 10 a.m., so be sure to get there early. Definitely a great spot to start the day while staying at The Lodge. read more

The management here is failing their staff and customer's. Our table was not set for our group size and we had a reservation and waited for the table to be set up. Oysters came fast and were good. My bar drink was 15 plus minutes in the window and came watered down. Remade was better but wrong bourbon. The whipped feta sounded really good so we ordered some along with the oysters. I'll never know if it was good because it never came. The entrees were fine but came out very very slow. The salads came with the entrees not before so table space was a fight for all the plates. I wanted the catch of the day but the kitchen refused to sub the warm potato salad for the polenta so I had the shrimp. The blackened shrimp lacked seasoning and everything was one note. I tried the warm potatoes salad from someone else's side and it's not potato salad at all, it's just fingerling potatoes with a little onion and again one note. The food was average at best and service subpar but again I say maybe because management wasn't around or their training was lacking. Certainly not worth the price. The space was beautiful so maybe the food and service can level up. read more

Not sure of the mixed reviews but this food was awesome! I really loved it and so did everyone with us. We had breakfast twice and dinner once. Each time was exceptional. The buffet was really good. All the food well prepared and properly seasoned. Some of the best potatoes and grits, especially for a breakfast buffet. I opted for the banana bread French toast both time and have zero regrets! Not too sweet and a nice sear on the outside. Bacon was crispy and delicious. For dinner I had the ribeye with potatoes and sautéed spinach. Steak was a little fatty but still great. I included fried oysters and so glad I did. One of my fave parts of the meal. Bread service was delicious as well. The service was friendly and helpful. Pretty good place to eat. We stayed at the lodge for a birthday, and liked the menu of Foodcraft vs Perch (they are in the same building, so similar view and vibe). We were there on a Sunday night and didn't need to make a reservation. It was about half full. We got the fish & chips and chicken & dumplings. The fish was extremely crispy/fried and a little different (no fries, smashed fried potatoes instead). My husband liked it but he had horrible heartburn for hours after (not normal for him) so just be aware it is very heavy and fried. I enjoyed my dish, the chicken was cooked and seasoned very well and was tender. It was also a big portion. Bread service is $6. It was good, we got plain butter, olive oil, and chili crisp (tasted similar to a brand I buy for home). Fine if you really want some bread but it could have been complimentary. I would skip. We got chocolate cheesecake for dessert. It is more like a mousse but it was rich and very chocolately. Really good! We spent around $100 with a tip. Service was okay, maybe a little frosty. It was raining so we were inside - the view was lovely and we saw dolphins in the ocean from our table. Coastal, slightly upscale vibe, but not fancy. Not a place you need to dress up much. read more
