Jim is super knowledgeable and helpful. I have not gone for repair - but for help with orthotics to help with a metatarsal neuroma. Jim takes his time in working with each customer. Because the shop is so popular Jim works with multiple customers at a time. The process often involves Jim making some adjustments to insoles, then having you take a lap around the building to see how they feel and if they are working for you. While you are doing that he may be working with another customer (or two). This takes a bit of time. You have to be patient but well worth it and you can learn about what causes running problems, and how to improve them. read more

The short answer, I'll NEVER go back to this place!! RUN AWAY NOW!!! I came in yesterday at the recommendation of the Birkenstock store of Encinitas--I wanted to have my Birk sandals fitted with arch supports. Well, the (owner?) main cobbler didn't listen to my questions, didn't hold an actual conversation with me, and interrupted every sentence I spoke. He talked to me in rambling sentences like he was a doctor. He hurriedly "processed" what he THOUGHT were my requests and treated me like I was some kind of an idiot. Before I knew it, he had installed a pair of arches into my sandals that pinch, are uncomfortable, and that I'm not going to use. I wasted time and $45 of my money at this place. I've never used a shoe repair shop before, so I didn't know what to expect. This place is tiny, with easy parking. The man (owner? Master shoe guy?) who helped me took my complaints about uncomfortable boots and translated them into solutions. He customized an insole, stretched the leather in the toe box and detailed them while still keeping some of the distressed look. The fix wasn't cheap (about $50), but they are now wearable! Plus, it only took 3 days. The boots have never looked better. When I next need anything shoe fix related, this will be my first stop. read more

Amazed to find a place in North County that does rock climbing shoe repairs -- I got two pairs of climbing shoes (3 of the shoes had massive holes in the toes) repaired for under $100, and it only took two days! When riding my road bike, and often while just walking, I have chronically experienced sharp almost debilitating pain in my foot arch. My visit to a Podiatrist for an X-ray and consultation left me with no new insight on the cause, another chunk of healthcare dollars spent (following a previous, even less worthwhile visit to another Podiatrist years ago), and a prescription for a single pair of custom orthotic inserts that would cost hundreds more and provide proper support in one pair of shoes at a time, and not, unfortunately, including my form-fitting cycling shoes. As an alternative, I was referred by a friend to Jim Rice, the proprietor at Foot Depot. Yesterday, after discussing the location of my sore spot, Jim showed me a model of the bones of the foot. Last winter I brought my boots in to this shop for new heels They were 4 yes old at the time. When I complained about the price ($24) I was told how their heels would be far superior to the original heels. The new heels wore out in no time and a nail appears to be coming out as well. When I brought them in to the shop today I was told that it was not their work and is that these are original heels! Completely untrue. Dont waste your money. Shoddy work and materials! If you are looking to get your climbing shoes resoled look elsewhere. The service is fast. That's about it. Had to come back because the replaced soles were detaching. Which were glued back. I also had rand repair. Which consisted of a cone of rubber placed around affected area. Not even sanded down. Couple months in a hole reappears in same affected rand area. The rand was coming off as well. The soles were coming unglued with plenty of rubber left. I ended up sending my shoes somewhere else and they even asked me where I had my last job done. I'm sure it wasn't for admiration. Maybe if u don't climb hard. It's fine. Not for me. The owner is nice and friendly though. Might take a while to get his attention as he is very chatty with everyone that comes in. read more

Today I went to this shop for the first time. When I walked in there was an employee looking at his phone, and did not even acknowledge my presence, no greeting, no eye contact, nothing. When the owner - my assumption as only a proprietor would speak so rudely to a customer - inquired about my need, I proceeded to describe how my NB shoe was irritating my foot. Before I could finish my explanation, he interrupted me then mocked me for not being more clear about my issue. I was literally stunned at the incredibly offensive, patronizing way that I was treated. Suffice it to say I was furious about his condescending attitude, so I abruptly took my shoe and left the shop. I'm nearly 64 years old and have never experienced such blatant rudeness at a retail store ... not even close. read more

I need a 1/4" lift on my right side. Since lifts are difficult/awkward to use with sandals (forget about flip-flops), I've steered away from those for most of my adult life. Then I got the idea to have the lift installed in the heel of the sandal (I'm sure I'm not the first to think of that - it just never occurred to me until recently). I took my idea to another shoe place, who told me it couldn't be done (with the pair of Ralph Lauren flip-flops I showed him). Dejected, I returned the flip flops, but kept searching for a sturdier pair of sandals to try again. I bought a good pair of Cole Haan sandals at the outlet mall and instead of going back to the first place, I went to Foot Depot (also known as Sole Performance), based on the Yelp reviews. Jim looked at the sandals and said "no problem!" Two days later, I picked them up and was amazed! He did such a great job, you would never know the right one was altered - he was able to match the sole leather perfectly. Emboldened by the success, I went back and re-purchased the flip-flops and brought them in. "No problem!" Two days later, I'm wearing flip-flops for the first time in years! I beat the crap out of my Sidi boots! And that's because they are made to work and work hard. But like everything and everyone, eventually you wear out and begin to break down. And so go the tale of my Sidi boots that I bought in the year 199(something). These things have been all over California and Nevada. They have walked the lowest point in the States, Death Valley Bad Water Basin. They have ridden to the top of Glacier Point in Yosemite. They were my enduro boots for the annual SheetIron 300 for many years. And then when I started racing Supermoto in Northern California I used these boots. I mean, why not. They were comfortable and basically perfectly broken in. Trackdays? Sunday Morning Rides in Marin County? Down the SF Peninsula to Alices and the surrounding twisties. These boots have been with me through crash scenes, racing stories, trackday heroics and just plan hanging out at the cafes and bars in f'n SAN FRANCISCO!!! I have four different types of bikes and I use these boots on all of them. So when the stitching started to break and the soles had lost its soul, I looked at my pathetic old buddies and just nodded my head. I went to look for new Sidis and the local distributor and was shocked at the price tags. But what made me feels worse was starting a new relationship with another pair of boots. Don't get me wrong. I do have a second pair of boots. The Sidi Combat Touring. But that is what they are. The second pair. And now I was thinking of "changing up" to a hot new model? We would have to get to know each other. I gotta figure out how to buckle them up in the dark. Then I need to keep them clean and polished. Oh man... what happens if I scuff them doing something stupid? Of course, I need to get new leathers to match the style of the modern boots. Other riders will look at me like some kinda of "newbie" rider. All the while my true love is sitting in the garage gathering filth underneath the stairs of my 89 year old house. "NO...! I will not do that to her!!! " I mean, I will try to figure out a way to save my dilapidated boots. So I talk to the equipment guy at my fave moto shop and they say, "Sole Performance" So I gave Jim a call. He told me what to do and I did it. Basically, I printed out a doc from his website and "stick it inside the boot!". He told me he had a 48 hour turn around. No problem. I handed the box over to the UPS store and before I knew it the box was at my work. I didn't even miss them since I was on a trip to buy some vintage BBS wheels for my 1970 Mercedes custom project. But that's a different story. Completely different! I opened the box and I could not believe how nice they were. I couldn't even tell where the stitching was repaired. It was so good that I forgot what part of the boot was damaged. The soles were gorgeous! Real Sidi soles made to fit. So, once again, my lovely boots and I are riding around. I was recommended to Jim's Store by my massage therapist. Stopped by and explained to him my issue (plantar fascia) and what I was looking for. He is very knowledgeable about the mechanics and anatomy of the foot and I trusted him more than any running shoe store I've been too. Needless to say, 30 min later I left with the insoles with added arch support I was looking for. I was surprised at how reasonable his prices are!! You might have to wait a few minutes as he helps other customers picking up or dropping off repair items, but totally worth the wait, as he helped tapped my foot and showed me how to do so myself so I can keep running!!!!! This place is great! My husband had a work boot zipper that was completely broken off and we didn't want to go and buy a whole new set of boots. I don't know much about shoe repair prices but it cost me $18.99 plus tax to replace the zipper. They are located right next to Ricos Tacos Shop. You would think that the store doesn't have much traffic but for the two times I went there to drop off and pick up the boot, there were quit a few people in line. Jim is more than a wealth of foot knowledge. When both the primary doctor and podiatrist sent me there I figured something must be right. The shop is small and unassuming. Don't let that deter you though. I had to wait about 20 minutes to see Jim but then I was his sole (bad pun, I know) purpose in life. I have a ruptured plantar fasciitis with a boot on and Jim took the time to fit me with high arch orthotics, taped up my foot and taught me how to tape it correctly. The Foot Depot ruined my suede nubuck Birkenstock clogs by polishing them! The Birkenstock shop in Encinitas recommended I take my shoes here for new soles. They did a good job with the soles, but unfortunately they polished the suede nubuck to a high sheen. If you do take a suede pair of shoes to the Foot Depot for repair, I recommend stipulating that you do not want them polished since they do not seem to know this. read more
