Oh forage kitchen, how I love thee!!! This is my go to place for healthy, fresh, and most of all delicious meals in Madison. I've tried so many of their bowls and salads on the menu; the cashew bowl is top tier with a dressing so good I could drink it. The avocado crunch is also great (tuna salad please come back). The bowls are a very generous size and fill me up every time. I also love that their ingredients are locally sourced, and don't skip out on their cookies for dessert. I literally wish I could eat forage for lunch every single day. This Hilldale location is my favorite. Staff is always so nice and they make my bowl perfect every time. My experience at other locations hasn't been as good (too much dressing, out of multiple ingredients) so I always stick with this one. I've been here a few times (when staying at the Springhill Suites next door) and have tried a few different bowls and have enjoyed them all! I like that it's a quick option (counter service) for dinner when you're hungry but don't want to go to a full-service restaurant, or when you just want something healthier! The mini size bowls are really small (in my opinion) - probably half the size of the regular ones, so just something to note. I'd probably just pay the extra $3 and get the normal sized one. Love that they have a variety of drinks too (canned beer, wine, etc.). They also have a fairly substantial area if you choose to dine in. read more

Very quaint salad grab and go place! It gets busy during lunch time so beware however service was very fast. I got the cashew bowl and added chicken for higher protein. I worked with Manager Paulie (sp?), and he was so attentive, helpful, and was able to get our several orders for our work team lunch correct. I've worked with him before for work lunches, and he was friendly, professional, and got every single thing correct (which was a lot of special orders). I had the cultured Cobb salad which comes with a half slice of delicious bread. It was a large bowl with plenty of toppings and a wonderful dressing. Every ingredient was perfect. I am SHOCKED that I haven't reviewed this place yet! It is one of my go to places to have a quick healthy meal and a serious contender whenever I'm in the hilldale area. The key here is if they have the forbidden black rice versus the red rice. Both are good but the black rice is superior. Next talking about their bowl. All of their bowls are primo, but my favorites are the fiesta bowl, cashew bowl, and Cobb. FIRE. Any of those you can't go wrong but you also can't forget the make your own. Nothing meeting your fancy? Make your own curation and boom happy and healthy meal for honestly two days. This place makes their servings large and can easily cover 2 meals unless you're starved. I love picking up one of their kombuchas at the end or a cookie. You don't really need a protein even tho that might seem backwards, but the veggies are super filling! If you want one I am a fan of the tofu and tempeh:) The service is always quick and wonderful and the ambiance is elevated fast food. Whether in takeout, dine in, or delivery, the quality of Forage Kitchen is exactly the same. They take pride in using fresh ingredients and makes eating healthy easy. I 100% agree. If I'm craving healthy lunch or salad, I immediately think of Forage. I'm usually gravitate towards the warm bowls and my favorites have been mole bowl. The mole has such a nice spice and slight smokiness to it. Pairs really well with the quinoa and add on the lentil balls. For me, I can easily parse this out into 2 separate meals if I add my own greens, it is that filling and super delicious. My favorite salad is the batatas rancheros and a huge reason of that is the salsa rojo dressing. The dressing is so good, I could put it on everything. The snap of the romaine as well as the sweet potatoes and then some typical fiesta bowl toppings, it is an amazing blend. Lastly, if you're thirsty, I would recommend the tropical kombucha. And then if you really have more room, get the oatmeal cookies. They are tasty too. read more

I feel like this is a "fool me once..." situation. I ordered the Mole bowl. It was laid out in thirds: one row tabouli, one row black bean mix, and one row mole sauce. Everything except the mole sauce tasted like it was covered in dill pickle juice. it was so odd. I don't know what it could've been, I went back and looked at the menu. It said there were pickled onions, but there were so few onions in there that couldn't of been it. Plus, it was every single bite. I tried mixing the pickle juice infusion with the Molé sauce, but it didn't combine well. I hesitate to give this place another try, in case that's just how all the food tastes. By the way, I like dill pickles. I just don't want my food soaking in their juice. Oh yeah, I had the coconut corn soup and it was not impressive. As a first time customer I was easily surprised with the medium-large portions compared to the price you pay. I received my order via take out and it was packaged nicely with dressings on the side. If non of the menu items speak to you, it's simple to create your own bowl with anything and everything you'd like. The Kombucha was something I've had elsewhere so I figured I would give Forage Kitchen's a try. Sadly, I could go without the Kombucha. Love the food, kombucha in a can though, not good. The one i tried tasted nothing like kombucha. Didn't feel like I was drinking the fermented tea at all. Bowls are priced ok but overpriced for extras (1.50 for one egg?). Also, employees are not friendly and move slow at the Hilldale Location. First time ever going there over a month ago on a weekend, my husband and I stood there for about 3 minutes while 3 people working there looked up at us said nothing and continued to do whatever they were doing. Felt very weird. Guy with gauged earrings looked at us several times and said nothing, no hi, no we'll be with you in one moment. Same guy was working there tonight as well. Tonight I tried to order through eatstreet for the first time, to get food for pick up, checked out as a guest. (husband typically orders through his phone and I don't' have an account, live close so figured I would pick it up.. No account must have been the issue with eatstreet because I got there five minutes after the thing said my order was ready, and apparently the ticket must have barely printed out when i arrived and unbenounced to me, the ticket said it wasn't going to be done for another 10+ minutes. Technology error aside, I was under the impression my order was already ready and after inquiring and telling them twice that it said my order was ready, they literally waved a hand at me and said "oh, huh, it will be done in a while." In a tone like oh there's many more before this one. I said a while?! she corrected, oh uh few minutes. Super rude. I just told you the app said it was already done, and none of them (three of them all involved in finding my ticket, not one asked to see my order on my phone or explain that apparently the ticket showed the ready time to be 10 minutes or so later. They just let me stand there, didn't start making it, and even asked me to move and wait somewhere else when customers came in after me. No one was in line when I first inquired and they could have just made it. Don't think I'll be going there again at least for a long time, so good job guys. Don't have to deal with me cause I'm so terrible for asking about an order that said was ready. Didn't yell or anything yet get treated like shit and called a bitch. Awesome service. read more

I always have loved Forage Kitchen, and it was one of the first places I went after spending a year out of state. Forage Kitchen is still fantastic. Their ingredients are fresh and healthy but still come together to make an absolutely delicious meal that doesn't seem like you're eating super healthy. I love that you can mix your bases and get half greens and half rice. I always make my own bowl (the same bowl, cuz it's AMAZING - 1/2 rice, 1/2 mixed greens, lentils, broccoli, green onions, chicken, goat cheese, Green Goddess dressing). We did takeout for a family gathering to watch the Badger volleyball semifinals, and everyone at the table ordered something different but loved their bowl. I do miss the side dishes that they used to serve (the cauliflower was to die for), but totally get that especially during COVID huge menus are hard to handle.
