I enjoyed the Thai bowl for lunch, which consisted of the following ingredients: sweet potato coconut sauce, forbidden black rice, roasted sweet potatoes, daikon, cucumber, cilantro, and thai basil. I also had chicken added to my bowl for extra protein. The portion size was plenty and I even had leftovers. The man that served me was very friendly and walked me through the menu board for their main entrees which includes vegetarian, vegan, and choices with meat that they can make into a salad or grain bowl. He went over the most popular choices on the menu and made me feel assured that I picked a good selection for bowls on their menu. I am glad that I found this healthy and friendly establishment for lunch. I will definitely be coming back to try some of their other dishes on their menu. read more

Hilldale has added a number of promising new restaurants in the past several months and Forage Kitchen did not disappoint. Like its counterpart on State Street, the Hilldale outpost of Forage Kitchen does an impressive job of taking relatively simple ingredients and skillfully transforming them into flavorful, healthy meals. The bulk of the menu then consists mostly of various grain bowls and custom salads. Most of the bowls are vegetarian, but you can choose from a wide selection of animal or plant-based proteins to round out your meal. During my recent visit, I ordered the Thai Bowl (Thai sweet potato coconut sauce, forbidden black rice, roasted sweet potatoes, daikon, cucumber, cilantro, Thai basil) with coconut-braised pork belly, while my daughter elected to Club Med Bowl. Other than the protein, I immensely enjoyed the cornucopia of flavors and textures of the Thai Bowl. The roasted sweet potatoes contrasted nicely with the more savory elements of the bowl. The dry, stringy pork belly was the sole disappointment, did added little to the flavor profile of the meal. The roasted sweet potatoes with tamarind pepper jam from the shareables menu are also high recommended. So much better than the salty, often overcooked sweet potato fries from the nearby Café Hollander. The venue is clean and well maintained. The windows in the front of the restaurant open up, giving diners an opportunity for an al fresco experience during the warmer months. read more

I have heard great things about this restaurant from friends and family and was excited to try them. I placed an order on Eat street for pickup and received notification that my order was ready 40 minutes later. When I arrived to pickup my order, no one had even seen it. I told two separate people that I had a newborn at home that I needed to get back to quickly and was assured that they would finish my order quickly. 20 minutes later, no one had worked on my order. I had a request a refund and am unlikely to try this site again in the future. read more

I really wanted to like this place. I think the food is great but management however needs training on how to treat employees. I came in one afternoon on my lunch to grab some food and over heard a manager speak rather condescendingly to another employee in front. I couldn't catch the name, Cheryl, Charlotte or Cheri. One of those. She was plain rude and I felt so bad I decided to leave. I am hoping the employee spoke up and upper management is aware. Not acceptable in my book!! I didn't know food could be both really healthy and tasty! As a vegan, it's also nice to find a restaurant that has so many options and accommodations. The bowls look really colorful and the flavors blend together beautifully. The only thing I would change would be for them to add a little less salt to the mole bowl and the vegan chili, but otherwise it was a really fresh and unique taste that surprised me in a really good way. If you love the Thai bowl at the State St location as much as I do, and you were expecting the same, you will be disappointed. You cannot call something a big mac and then make it without the patty. I work near the Hilldale Forage Kitchen and it's my favorite place for lunch. I am vegan and always order the Thai cashew bowl with tempeh. The tempeh here is so good and I love the Thai dressing. They do not skimp on serving size! I've been here several times and also tried the Thai Bowl (good curry sauce), my vegetarian husband liked the Club Med bowl too (which could be vegan). My first trip to Forage Kitchen definitely left me wanting more, and excitedly anticipating my next trip! The whole family would agree as well! When you can get the kids approval on healthy fast food then you know that the restaurant is doing something right! I also have to brag on this restaurant for their amazing customer service. We took forever trying to figure out what we were going to order, and everyone patiently waited on us without those looks of disgust and "hurry up." My kids and I did a Build-Your-Own-Bowl and the options were endless! I can't wait to go back and try more variations. We also ordered a Vegan Chili bowl (only $3!!!) and hubs got the Thai Bowl. I tasted a little of everything, and it was all amazing! All of our bowls were scraped clean at the end of the visit. Like I said before, we can't wait to go back! I got the grain bowl with salmon, 15 dollars for a small bowl of veggies and maybe 2 oz of cold smoked salmon. I asked for dressing on the side, which they did, but even without adding the dressing the veggies and quinoa were oily. Ate less than half and threw it out. Hubby got the Thai bowl, good flavor but for 8.50 it was about a cup and 1/2 of food and the rest was sauce. Would NOT recommend or go back. Prices are way to high for what you get. read more

I am a regular customer who orders from Forage on the regular. Today, however, I ordered a bowl online and I went to go pick it up and the portion was half the size of what it usually is, half of the bowl was empty. Then, the base (including the rice and beans) and vegetables inside were running liquid everywhere and extremely soggy, plus they forgot my tortilla strips that go with the order. I ordered this same bowl no different than how I usually order them, and other times they have been fantastic. Today was extremely disappointing considering I spend a significant amount of money on their bowls every time. I expect better. read more

The food used to be really good. Now it seems like the quality has decreased and prices have increased. Doesn't seem worth the prices.

Went for lunch during the rush today and the food was enjoyable. We had a mole bowl and a Thai cashew. Both were well made and filling. We found a table quickly and enjoyed our meal. The reason for two stars is that the gentleman prepping the food had a beard and did not have hair net on his beard, the one of the bowls had a significant chip out of the rim, and it took pulling 4 forks to get two cleans forks. read more

We've tried 4 bowls - power, Thai cashew, poke and fiesta. Power and Thai cashew were our faves but all 4 were great. Lots of flavor. I do wish they offered two sizes, because there's a LOT of food in each bowl. Some minor kinks in the accuracy and efficiency in the large staff, too, but it's still on the newer side at this location, so hopefully those work themselves out. read more

I have eaten at this location and the downtown location and I like the food. The trouble is their food handling. Last weekend I was at this location and a guy working behind the counter kept taking his hair in and out of a pony tale while walking around by the food. He handled money and made bowls for people. He would go straight from handling his hair to putting on gloves, or straight from handling hair and then money to putting on gloves before making the next person's food. I'm not kidding when I say he took his hair in and out of a ponytail about 20 times while I was there. I asked for a manager and the girl standing next to him the whole time said she was shocked and it wasn't right, but she hadn't noticed. Hadn't noticed? He was 5 feet from her the whole time.....she also said he doesn't work here regularly...as if that matters. I have lost confidence in this place. Why not have some clear guidelines for your employees like: all of your grooming needs to happen BEFORE you get to work and have a dedicated register person....otherwise, they need to WASH their hands between toughing money and putting on gloves. I live in the Hilldale "complex" and work at Hilldale so was thrilled to have a new addition to our neighborhood. The first time I tried it I fell in love! The ingredients are fresh and you can have exactly what you like! My go-to bowls are the "Local Roots" (love the roasted beets and maple-sherry dressing) and Poke Bowl. Pay attention if you check out the menu online--not all of the ingredients are accurate (i.e., online Local Roots comes with mixed greens, but in the restaurant it's kale--and A LOT of kale--so I swap it). I'm still confused about swapping items (i.e., on the Poke Bowl I like 1/2 black rice and 1/2 greens) because sometimes they upcharge and sometimes they don't...so it's good to ask first. All that said...I eat there at least twice a week! Give them your phone number to start a frequent buyer account! I've had a lot of free kombucha and $1.50 off my bowls several times already.
