Foragers Canteen is one of my favorite restaurants in the Sylva area to eat at. They moved from the train depot in Dillsboro to downtown Sylva since we have visited last. The location on the river is lovely, however it was too cold to sit outside this evening. The food is always tasty and made fresh to order. I have had almost everything on the menu over time. Tonight our table had The Foragers Shrimp & Grit, Black Rock Beef Medallions and Alfredo ala Foragers. The shrimp and grits were creamy and nice a nice balance of cheese with andouille sausage and shrimp, however they forgot to bring the bread. The house made Alfredo had a nice herb taste and the amount of chicken compared to pasta was good. Everything about the Black Rock Beef Medallions was perfection. The beef was tender and the flavors were balanced nicely. That will be ordered again. From past visits, some of my favorite are; the cranberry vinaigrette dressing, Steam Engine Steak, Sweet Fire BLT, The Bluegrass Chicken and the Piggy Planks. This was the best food we've had in a very long time and the service was amazing. We will definitely be back.

Stopped by for lunch on the way to Asheville and was really pleased with our choice. On the way end we ran into a couple that was leaving with "to go" boxes and asked them what was good. The woman suggested the "Blacksmith Salad" with chicken declaring it was the biggest and yummiest salad ever, especially with the homemade green goddess dressing. The man said the "Street Corn Tacos". He said he ordered an extra taco but had to take it with him. The cafe is rustic with s very laid back atmosphere. They have a full bar. The cafe has seasonal menus and claims to be farm to table sourcing a lot of their ingredients locally. I took the man's advice and ordered the Street Corn tacos which had shrimp as a protein and mom went with the Steam Engine tacos which had beef tips as the protein. Both were very tasty but I'd give the edge to the shrimp tacos. My side of collards was fresh and tasty but mom didn't care for the sprouts. She did tell our server and wasn't charged. Since I still had several hours of driving, I ordered coffee which was good and hot even mid afternoon. Overall we really enjoyed our meal and would happily eat there again. read more

My cousin and I ate there last November. I had the fried deviled eggs they were simply delicious, she had a salad and shared my eggs with me. For dinner she had The lamb shank she said that it was cooked perfectly, just the way she liked it. I had really amazing shrimp and grits, they had smoked gouda cheese and spices. Our server was such a nice young man. He made sure our drinks stayed full, he took our empty plates when we finished with them. This brunch was everything. I got Foragers omelet with grilled onions and it was delicious with potatoes and pancake. Server, Chandler, was excellent and very attentive. We sat at the window high seats to enjoy the view outside. Highly recommend and would definitely come back. read more

We have visited Forager's Canteen with family, or just the two of us, several times. This location can be very busy, especially when the train delivers a crowd. At other times, you can just walk right in and be seated. The decor is eclectic, the atmosphere is casual and relaxed, and the food is good. read more

We are visiting from out of town & stopped to eat lunch here. The staff was very friendly and prompt. I got the grilled chicken sandwich and it had great flavor! My daughter got a side salad and ate a good portion of it. My niece also the kids pancake and bacon and ate both of them! LOVED it here! Came with a group of 8 and a pup on a beautuful Sunday early evening. Sat outside, umbrellas were a welcome bit of shade. Service was on point! They were quick, helpful when we were undecided, friendly and efficient. We split the shrimp and crisps, Brussels appie and a Steak salad. Demolished all 3, which totally surprised us, portions were hefty. The shrimp and crisps are still on my mind 3 days later, they were beyond perfection. I have never had eggplant be so tender and light. The shrimp were cooked and sauced but the shrimp flavor came through, not over powered at all. Brussels were fabulous too, and the steak on the salad was very tender and flavorful. Everyone loved their food and we can wait to return! read more

What a cute town and pleasant find amongst the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Farm to table from start to finish. So many homemade options (even down to the sauces and chipotle ranch dressing). Nice "twist" they give to many dishes as well. For example....the Sweet Heat BLT tacos have chicken that is marinated in sweet tea (brilliant) making them super moist and slightly sweet offset by the heat of the chipotle ranch sauce and bacon. The sweet potato tots also were amazing and you can have the "salty" or "sweet." My son had the pancakes which we had heard were amazing and they didn't disappoint. If I understand correctly, the batter is made in the milkshake machine and my son said they were crispy on the outside and fluffy and soft on the inside. I guess they are so famous a lady walked in to order some and they had run out and she said she had been waiting months to come for just those. The dinner menu looks amazing (Smoked Gouda grits...yum!). I may have to find a reason to return! read more

But, recently we had lunch on the deck with friends coming through town. The food was excellent, a little pricy, handicap parking is very limited and when the check came, there was a charge for using a charge card. I think this is totally unnecessary and will reflect itself in tipping which is a shame.. read more

This is my second review of this establishment. My first review, regrettably, was not good due to so much salt in the dish I ordered But, this time, WOWZERS!!! They redeemed themselves a thousand times over. It was Mother's Day and Western Carolina's graduation weekend. Every little town within a 5 mile radius of the college is always packed to the brim for big occasions. Good news....this restaurant takes reservations where many others do not. No reservations and you will be waiting at least an hour. I ordered the Loaded Breakfast Bowl. It was pure tee Heaven! It consisted of crispy fried taters (these were out of this world!), buttermilk biscuit with homemade sausage gravy, 2 eggs (any way), and candied bacon bits. The whole thing just melted in my mouth. I loved every bite and it wasn't full of salt. My son got the Forager's omelet. It was HUGE. He said it was delicious and commented on how heavenly the crispy potatoes tasted. My daughter booked the reservation a week in advance. The service was fantastic. If you're ever visiting Western Carolina University then please take a hop, skip and a jump to Dillsboro and give them a try. You won't be disappointed! read more

Great spot for lunch or dinner in Sylva. Located right downtown near shopping and close to the college. Great outdoor seating and nice bar inside. The menu is diverse and they have brunch on the weekends. The decor is eclectoc and fun and the staff is fantastic. I'm addicted to the spitfire BLT tacos and fried butter fingerling potatoes. Yummy fresh food. Weekend brunch is very tasty. I had the Foragers Omelet - very fluffy and stuffed with chicken sausage, bacon, scallions and cheese. I split it in two as it's just a lot with the potatoes and bread. I chose it to keep calories and carbs low but I blew it in the fat department as there was butter all over it. Tasty though! Foragers is a nice, casual restaurant with good food and friendly service, but it lacks ambiance. We tried various things on the menu (Shrimp and Grits, Beet Salad, Chicken Alfredo and the Mother Clucker sandwich). Being a non-drinker, I was grateful for a small selection of NA beers. Some friends and I went for dinner after they moved to their new location in Sylva. The place looks great, menu has a nice variety to choose from and the service was fast. We ordered 4 different dishes: Steam Engine Steak tacos, Goat in the Garden salad, Alfredo ala Foragers and Foragers Shrimp and Grit (we also ordered the sweet tater tots) - everything was delicious! We then decided to try the desserts. This is where we were disappointed. - Sampler cobbler was basically 4 tiny glass jars filled with pie filling and crushed graham crackers and vanilla ice cream for $13. - Lemon marscapone cake was a (badly burnt) lemon pound cake with blueberry compote for $9 The only successful dessert was the layered crepe cake - so I can only recommend that one. read more

Where to begin! There are so many great things to say about this fabulous restaurant. If you are a foodie...this is the olacThe menu is over the top. The food is amazing!!! We started out with some Gouda cheese grits... next time I'm getting them as an entree with the shrimp. Then I had BLT sweet tea tacos. All the delicious flavors with the crunchiness of the chicken all complimented eachother. My husband and I split my side of Brussel sprouts. I have to say they were the best I ever had. He also had the seared scallops and practically licked his plate. We could go here every night because we want to try everything on this menu. The chefs are classically trained and it shows in the combination of flavors and the creativity of the menu! The ambiance is also perfect! But the best part is the friendly, warm, welcoming, engaging and knowledgeable staff. They all seem to enjoy what they are doing and are very talented in their craft. Huge shout out to our bartender Travis, the manager Charlie and server Jessie. We will not only be back for this incredible dining experience but to see these fabulous people. The pricing was fair and reasonable especially for the quality and quantity of the food! We were even given a little token of appreciation (Darth Vader-3D printed) from Travis and Charlie! Quick and friendly service. Their potatoes are about the best I have ever had. I was there for brunch. I had the Forager omelette, not so great. It purported to have chicken sausage in it. I think there was one maybe two pieces. Not inspiring. The green onions would have been better on top after cooking instead of inside. Scant tomatoes overly salted. Husband had eggs benedict and said the English muffin was not toasted and mushy. Really nice on the back patio. Pleasant rolling water, that was really one of the best parts. Absolutely blown away by not only the service which was amazing but the food and plating was 5 star! I could smell the collards when I walked in and had to have them. The shrimp and grits was one of the best I've had in a long time and the addition of the chicken sausage was perfect. The pancakes are HUGE!
