From the nostalgic tributes to Blue Bell, our armed forces, and the railroad, it felt like stepping back into a patriotic 1940s diner. The warm atmosphere and hometown feel made the experience just as memorable as the food. If you're craving a classic, no-frills breakfast, you won't be disappointed. I ordered the eggs and pork chops. The pork chops could have used just a touch more salt for my taste, but with a light sprinkle at the table, they were absolutely delicious. My daughter ordered the short stack, and those pancakes completely blew us away. They were hands down some of the best pancakes we've ever had and officially earned this diner my new favorite breakfast spot. For those who aren't in the mood for breakfast, they also offer a generous selection of lunch options. My husband ordered the Reuben and thoroughly enjoyed it. Overall, Union Station Diner delivers everything you'd hope for in a small-town diner: welcoming hospitality, comforting food, and a nostalgic atmosphere that makes you want to come back again. If you're passing through, it's absolutely worth the stop.

Generally a place with diner in the name really knows how to cook breakfast. We were not disappointed. The restaurant is small so that meant about a 45 minute wait. When they finally called our name, service was fast and friendly. I was going to go with the turkey and dressing but our server was honest and said that the dressing wasn't homemade. I'm a dressing snob, so I went with a breakfast plate including a chicken fried steak, 2 eggs and extra crispy hash browns. They offer a pancake as one of your bread options and that was enormous and delicious. Our server was really pleasant and attentive, making the meal very enjoyable. If we ever find ourselves needing breakfast in New Braunfels again, we'll for sure be back.

We intended to have 2 each but had to stick with one in order to function afterwards. I had the CFC Biscuit Benedict and you can customize it with spicy chicken or hot honey. I got the hot honey and it was perfect! It was so delicious I don't leave a morsel behind. My friend and I shared the salted caramel brownie for my birthday, and that was also delicious. I can't wait to come back here and this says a lot since I'm not big of fried chicken. Theirs is fried to perfection (soft on the inside and just crunchy enough on the outside). You're seriously missing out!

Last night I finally brought my husband to try it after hyping it up for so long, and unfortunately it was a huge disappointment. Things have definitely changed. I was really looking forward to the chicken fried chicken, only to find out they were completely out of mashed potatoes. For a place known for chicken, that was surprising. So I ended up just sharing some of my husband's meal and our appetizer. The cornbread has always been something I rave about, especially with their hot honey. This time it came out dry, and the hot honey had no heat at all. It just was not the same. My husband's fried chicken was honestly the worst part. It was burnt, with a layer of black under the breading, and tasted like it had been overcooked to the point of being charred. There is no way the kitchen did not see how dark it was before serving it. That said, his sides were still great, so at least part of the meal was enjoyable. Our friend's chicken sandwich was not terrible, but it did not taste fresh like it used to. It felt more like something frozen and heavily breaded instead of the quality we had experienced before. One positive was the service. Our server was wonderful, and the rest of the staff was kind and attentive as well. I accidentally spilled my drink right after it arrived, and they were quick and gracious to replace it even though it was completely my fault. That was very much appreciated. The other issue that really took away from the experience was the atmosphere. Halfway through our meal, a large group of adults sat in the courtyard and had their children sit separately at a table right next to us, while their parents remained in another section of the patio. The kids were clearly having fun and playing games, which is great, but they were also very loud and screaming just a foot away from our table while their parents enjoyed quiet drinks elsewhere. There were completely open sections of the patio farther away where they could have sat, so it was frustrating that they were placed right next to the only other table of adults trying to enjoy a night out. It ended up being very disruptive and took away from what we had hoped would be a relaxing evening. Overall, I was really disappointed. This used to be a place I highly recommended, but after this visit it feels like the quality and attention to detail have slipped. I truly hope they can get back to what made them so great before.

The Gruene Door did not disappoint! The drinks, appetizers, salad and main courses were all phenomenal with no exceptions. As someone with decades of food service experience, it's rare that I don't have something that I would change. But the service and food were both fantastic. The music was lively but not overbearing and the patio was calm. Our waiter was attentive, but not overly so; so we felt our needs were met without being hovered over. If I were to suggest anything, it might be nice to have candles on the tables, and maybe even a fire in the outdoor fireplace even though it wouldn't have needed for heat; just ambiance. Also the windows are tinted so darkly that initially I was afraid the restaurant was closed, so maybe consider an illuminated open sign facing the main road. But this place was great! We'll be back!

I really liked the lamb. Dish. That one wasn't too salty and had a nice flavor. I never was a tenderloin/filet mignon type person. Yeah, it's tender, but lacks the nice beefy flavor, so that might be one of the dishes they could add more salt to or have a strong sauce to go with it. Everyone's tastes differ, but that's based on my personal tastes.

One morning we decided to take him and walk around Gruene and eat lunch. There wasn't much going on there, so we got back in the car and headed elsewhere to eat. I had never been to Buttermilk Cafe, but my wife has been several times with the grandson and his parents. I got a little nervous when we went inside. It was a bustling place, and I was concerned that the wait might be too much for the baby. Fortunately, the wait was about five minutes. This place smells like heaven. The food that we ordered was wonderful. I had the house smoked salmon with toast points and a poached egg. My wife had a slice of quiche, an orange muffin, and some fruit. The baby had a turkey sausage patty, one of my toast points, and some of my wife's fruit. Everyone was super friendly. The staff were wearing football jerseys to celebrate the Super Bowl. Driving into their large parking lot, and seeing it completely full, let us know that it was going to be packed. Walking inside, we saw it was packed, but they got us seated rather quickly. After getting to our seats, the waitress arrived with menus very quickly and asked if she could start us off with coffee. We took her up on the coffee, and before she came back, we decided what we wanted. We all ordered something completely different, and mine was one of their famous waffles. I also got a side of bacon. The food came pretty quickly considering how packed they were. All orders were just as ordered. My waffle came with syrup and butter on the side so that I could use as much/little as I wanted. Everything was very good, and our waitress never let our coffee mugs get even half empty. She was really good at her job and was also a very good conversationalist. Will I return? Definitely!
