My husband took me here and I must say, I loved the ambiance a lot. It's a little more upscale, small, cute, and they have the BEST Lemon Drop Martini's. The food was a bit over priced, but then again they never advertised themselves to be cheap either. The service was good and the food was yummy. A group of us went for lunch this time around..they seated us very quickly but the lady who served us was either stoned or stupid..you know she was just soo slow.... now to the food.. LOBSTER PANINI W/ SIDE SALAD: The salad was so great, it was likea mango balsamic , on a bed of wild greens..very good. The Panini was kinda crappy..the bread was tasty but there was hardly any lobster more like the fake crab, the avocado was all mushy and part brown and they put strips of bacon in, which ruined any lobster taste, but the bacon was not even crispy, it was very undercooked. STEAK PIZZA: maybe we were lucky to get 8 lil strips of steaik, the pizza it self was self sized and quite tasty but if your gunna say that its loadedwith steak, at least do that . BRAISED SHORT RIBS: this by far was the best, they brought it out in a ceramic pot and the juices were so delicious like beef stew home made, the ribs were falling apart and it also had carrotsand potatos...oh man..this was so delicious..much like homemade beef stew,,,perfect for a cloudy day. RATATOUILLE: this came in a small side portion, perfect in size, and the taste was awesome..not to acidic from tomatoes but a perfect blend of earthy spices and lots of veggies! Unfortunately this place has gone way down hill over the past couple of years. I love the fact that we have a wine bar right here in Kailua, but the food has just been stuck in a downward spiral. I used to only get the lamb because I love a good rack of lamb. First they cut the portions in half a couple of years ago, realized their mistake there, and corrected it for a while. Now they've decided to make the lamb with kalbi. Why they did this is besides me. The lobster tail in the past has been a great choice, but it is now WAY overpriced. Last night I ordered the garlic ribeye. The arugula and raw onion "salad" on top is completely unnecessary, and let's be honest - there is no need for a mouthful of just raw onions and arugula without any sort of seasoning or dressing. The ribeye itself - I ordered rare since I actually like meat- was not tender like you would expect from a ribeye and I've gotten better steaks from Foodland and Safeway. The choices of sides leave a lot to be desired. I am not paying upwards of $30 a plate to have French fries- I don't care that you call them "shoestring". Bring back the good sides - the kale, brussel sprouts, vegetables, a good garlic mash- now those are the sides I'd expect to be having with a $30+ plate of food. Of course after dinner we were offered desserts, but then when I asked for the dessert menu I was told that they were out of most everything - all they had was vanilla gelato or tiramisu. Now, this was not a busy night by any means; this was a Tuesday evening with very few tables. Thanks, but no thanks. They need to re-vamp their menu again, and this time for the better, not downgrading to crappier food while just skyrocketing the prices. They need to get someone in there who can make desserts - like the different flavored creme brûlée they used to have in there. If you haven't already guessed by now I am very disappointed in where they have gone with this restaurant in recent years and will not be having dinner there again likely until they make some changes. There is no reason I should be paying ~$100 for 2 people with 1 drink a piece for crappy food. I will be choosing Buzz's from now on - at least there I can get a good steak and more than 1 drink a piece for the same price!! read more

Slowly reverting to the flaws of the original. Wow...what a turn of the tide. I'm being gracious even giving the three-star rating. We went back here after not coming for quite some time. The food had tons of execution problems. Even my favorite dish from before, the Kobe Burger Wellington, was omitted from the current menu. I thought that was one of the more original dishes from the menu, and they took it off. I really enjoyed it, and only thought that the execution needed a little work. I hate it when places take away the good, and not address fundamental problems in addition to that. The dishes we ordered suffered execution problems from beginning to end; some with promise and others not. The House Salad that we had was promising, it had a lot of fresh and choice ingredients. However, the balsamic dressing was loaded on there too much to taste any intricacy in the salad. They only needed a little bit of that potent dressing. The Beef Bourguignon i had was tasty, but nothing outstanding. It seemed like an over-glorified beef stew. The flavors were a bit on the muddled side. The pancetta in the dish tasted faint. Only one explanation came to my mind: the dish was overcooked. The Paella was a travesty. I love paella, and to see it defiled like this is sad. There was no saffron whatsoever in the dish. I really love that subtle flavor and the aroma, and to have it omitted means that the flavors have to be really good. That wasn't the case. The Paella was really bland, relatively speaking. There was good pieces of seafood in there, not no flavor: No essence of the seafood, no herbs, no nothing. I had the cirtus-glazed pork chop with the kale side. The pork chop was very tasty and tender and the kale complemented the entree very well. My dining partner had the chicken rollatini which she thoroughly enjoyed. We each had glasses of the "What Wes is drinking" wine selection, Forefront Pinot Noir (2011) which was excellent. Our server was very friendly, efficient and helpful. Wes checked on us to make sure everything was going well. A group of 5 friends and I set out to far away Kailua to try ... DINING IN THE DARK!!! I'd heard about this experience on the mainland, but when one of my friends mentioned Formaggio Grill was hosting this event ... I know I had to be there!! I've never eaten here before so I have no comparison as to what the food is normally like, but sit back, relax and be ready to hear all about Dining in the Dark. First off ... we arrived and had a glass of wine before being led to a private room in the back where the event was taking place. We were all lined up at the door to the private room and handed blindfolds ... amazingly unique blindfolds that were ours to keep after dinner. Once we were all properly blindfolded, we were led into the room by our servers. We were then individually sat down and so begins a crazy night. The blindfolds block out almost all the light (I could still see my friend's camera flash going off). We all felt around for our utensils and glasses as we commented loudly on how awkward this was already. Waiters and Waitresses were around to serve us wine, water and food ... and to escort us to the restroom! It was hilarious ... you had to be led to the bathroom door where you could finally take off the blindfold. The servers were extremely nice and patient with us ... and we were a handful!! We were served a 5-course meal starting with an amuse bouche (gazpacho this time), salad, a trio of meatballs, a deconstructed wellington, and dessert. I'm not going into too much detail on the food because not knowing what the food is, is more than half the fun! Just know that it was delicious and it was so much fun trying to guess at what we were eating!! Although you're provided utensils ... you will end up eating with your hands!! I tried to eat normally and for the most part was successful, but at other times there was no way to avoid using my hands. In fact I used my hands to clean my plate completely on more than one occasion!! This event is only offered on first Mondays of the month (unless you have a large enough party to get a private event on another day) and the menu will change every month ... so grab your friends and head down there!! FINAL VERDICT: Although I haven't eaten here before, I would HIGHLY recommend that you go here for the Dining in the Dark event!! I do want Formaggio's to succeed. Kailua needs locally-owned restaurants (despite A&B's best efforts to put them all out of business). But Formaggio's just isn't cutting it. My most recent visit highlighted several continual problems. First, Formaggio's describes itself as a wine-themed restaurant. Last night, the bartender let us know they were out of a good number of the selections they offered. I asked for a glass of whatever Malbec he had available, and got a glass that was obviously corked or had been open for a couple of days. When I brought it up, the bartender sniffed that he had just opened the bottle today, offered to sell me a different glass, and walked away. Not what you'd expect in response. Second, the food is increasingly going down in quality. I ordered the ribeye for dinner, and asked for it medium rare. The slab of raw meat that showed up about 15 minutes later may have been on the grill for 60 seconds. Granted, it was seared on the outside, but once I cut into it, there was a hair's width of sear on either side, and it was cold and red throughout. It was a very poor cut of meat as well--maybe half of the steak was edible, the rest was fat, grisle and bone. Finally, the value. The bill came to an amount you'd expect to pay at a high-end New York restaurant. For poor wine selection, poor quality of food, and average service, the bill should have been half that. I went to Formaggio's for my 11 year Anniversary. We normally go to Alan Wong's but the last few years we've gone, the service was bad. I called ahead of time to see if there was a wait. They have something called a "heads up" & if there is a wait they will put your name on the list 1/2 hour before you come. The lady told me there was no wait. When we arrived I noticed that there were like 4 other names ahead of us but, we got seated in less than 5 minutes. The hostess recognized that I was the one who called and said that right after that a crowd showed up. So maybe she felt sorry that she had told me there was no wait. Plus, I'm 8 months pregnant so that might've helped. The atmosphere is different and dark which I expected. It was pretty noisy but tolerable. My husband ordered a Mai Tai & I had a plantation Tea. If you want to get your money's worth in alcohol, this is definitely the place. Our apps were Foie Gras on Crostini & Calamari both were very tasty. I must say the Foie Gras was slightly overcooked but still had good flavor. We wiped out the apps in no time. Yummy! I had the Lobster Bisque & my husband had the Corn Chowder. The Lobster Bisque was o.k. the piece of lobster in it was way overcooked and rubbery. The corn chowder was "different" it was in red sauce & the thyme was overpowering but my husband enjoyed it. They had a Duck L'orange special. The duck was cooked perfectly and the sauce was tasty. We also had the Filet mignon w/Lobster & Beef Bourguignon. Both were extremely disappointing. The Filet was overcooked on the outside and really rare on the inside (I ordered med-rare), it had no flavor & reminded me of steak at Sizzler's. The lobster tasted like it was straight from the ocean and was overcooked and rubbery. There was also some weird potato thing almost looked like a tiramisu but tasted like plain potatoes w/no salt. I told my husband not to order the Beef Bourguignon as I make this dish at home and it is perfection. But he did anyway and it tasted like beef stew ( I could've went next door to Fatboy's for beef stew) I am not sure what kind of Filet Mignon they use for both dishes but it was not up to par. It was pretty tough in both. There were a lot of choices for desserts. We got the chocolate mousse which was really light and tasty and the coconut panna cotta which after ordering it I figured it would just be Haupia. It was. We also got the Pistachio Creme Brulee. So Yummy! It was definitely something different in a good way. The chocolate souffle cake was also good. All in all if we had skipped the entree's I would've been a happy camper. My chowdar never got a good vibe about Formaggio... but every time I meet someone from Central O'ahu they usually tell me how lucky I am to be living near Formaggio... that I decided it was time to give it a try. My instincts didn't let me down... its an okay neighborhood bistro but certainly not something to go out of your way for. Major Disappointments (1) Misleading name... they have no specialty regarding Cheese or Grilling... I hate when restaratuers do not think about the message they are sending with their name. What if all the Sushi places started taking names such as Luau Bistro? (2) I started off with the Watermelon & Rocket salad... I can't remember the last time I had such an insipid purposeless dish. Either they forgot to salt it or they meant it to be a sweetish salad... if so the fruit was tasteless & out of season. This is their only interesting salad & it sucks... I can't dissaude you enough. Mediocre (1) Beer Selection... now I know its a wine bar but they are going out of their way to provide a selection of better beers... but Red Stripe on tap & Samuel Smith bottled doesn't make for a cutting edge place. Where are the Belgian beers? (2) Escargot Appetizer. Don't get me wrong the Bleu Cheese, Butter, Basil sauce was delicious but the indifferent little snails were shucked & baked to death in one of those French style Mushroom Cap baking dishes. A perfect example of how Formaggio is a wannabe for wannabes.... if you are going to shuck the snails at least include the shells in the plating so that we can be sure of the product freshness... these were bagged & frozen sometime in the last century. The Good (1) Clams in spicy White Wine Sauce... the quality of Clams were good... not exceptionally fresh & bursting with ocean flavor but tender & devoid of funkiness. I can't say the addition of dried chiles to the broth is surprising or revelatory because I've had almost identical dishes in Mexico.. but it is refreshing to see a restaurant in the States prepare this version. This is a dish I would certainly go back for. Oh.. and the garlic bread for dipping was very, very good. (2) Creamed Spinach... the cream sauce lacked a little bit of flavor but they successful delivered a grown ups version of the dish with lightly blanched fresh Spinach.. retaining its bright green color & whole texture instead of the puddle of overcooked frozen spinach served at most places. (3) Lobster Bisque.... good version that successfully communicated the sweetness of Maine Lobster & a whole claw included in the bowl. However, the flavor is monotonous and its hard to eat the whole serving. The leftovers will be flavored with a little bit of Chipotle pepper & served with some rice. read more

Ordered French onion soup and it's a must. Love the taste and it's not over-seasoned. I ordered the shrimp Fresca pasta and I would order it again in a heartbeat. It was so full of flavor and it still felt fresh and light. Love the veggies in the pasta. Minus the tomato since my kids don't like tomato so we can share. My mom had the garlic ribeye and that thing could feed two. Nicely seasoned and cooked perfect. My son had the Kobe burger deluxe with a fried egg and he really enjoyed it. The food is still okay but the service has gone completely downhill. The waitress didn't take our order until we had been seated for 10 minutes. Dinner orders were not taken for 30 minutes... Well after we had finished our apps. When dinner finally did arrive we received one lobster panini, 5 minutes later, our daughter's pasta arrived with the incorrect pasta. My order was no where to be found. When I inquired to the server she stated "it's coming honey..." as if I were annoying her. The waitress never kept us informed or mentioned any delay. FIFTEEN minutes later, my prime rib panini arrived. What the heck has happened to the service? I've heard rumors that Wes is not in Kailua very often. My wife and I were reluctant to come here for dinner due to its 3 stars rating. We moved from town last June and today was literally our first time here and we wish we would have tried it earlier. No one came back to take our order so we were already contemplating leaving. So we did a passing glance at the waiters to make it obvious that we are waiting. Food: Finally we got our food. How do you mess up a burger? Even the corner gas station burger have better flavor. They wasted a Kobe beef. My wife ordered a fish taco, where is the fish? It is a sliver. You get more from a taco cantina truck. No flavor. She was forced to eat a chalky tasting taco. Her salvation is the mixed salad & so she thought until she starred munching on spinach with stems. Oh just get can't a break. Bathroom: Wife had the unfortunate experience of using the restroom. Water on the floor by the toilet. Floor is dirty with water residue and papers. Toilet papers rolls both gone but hey they left you a used roll on the sink. Slightly sprinkled from the faucet. Dare to use the water down soap... No matter how many pumps it will not bubble. Wife used the restroom with one eye closed because she was disgusted. The deal is when we walked in at lunch hour, only one table was taken. Service should be more attentive. Kailua's most overpriced and overrated kitchen. My girlfriend and I ordered the medium rare prime rib on NYE. The kitchen timing was terrible because our meal came out cold compared to our friends. We sent it back and instead of cooking another prime rib to medium rare, they simply took our meal and tossed it in a microwave. It came out TV dinner brown with a horrible texture while drowning in a pool of juice, making it inedible. read more

I would hate to write a review that seemed so full of discontent that it almost seems to be bias but I assure you, the experiences that my wife and I had can be objectively viewed as undesirable. I had made reservations for 9:30pm, my wife and showed out at 9:10 and we were not seated until just before 10:00 (9:57). The food took roughly 45 minutes to be brought out and my burger was so rare, it was dripping blood on the bun and plate (I ordered it medium-well). My wife's filet mignon was cold. Lastly, as we were finishing our meal, the employees began taking down the eating area around us which made us very uncomfortable. Not worth it, regret it, wouldn't recommend it. Abridged Version: Food: 1 Star - cold, bloody and uncooked. Environment: 1 Star - Main room was too loud to carry on a conversation. We were put in a back room/annex. It was uncomfortably cold and poorly decorated. Service: 1 Star - It took way too long to be seated and our food took approx. 45 min to be served. The most OVER PRICED Italian restaurant I have ever been to....and I'm from North Jersey! First of all service SUCKED! Waiter seemed as though we had disturbed his day. Their gelato is huge! I always plan my meals around dessert so I felt the need to warn you in advance. It does taste a little more like regular ice cream than gelato but I found pouring coffee onto it, made it a lovely self made affogato. I tried their gnocchi, which had a lot more vegetables than gnocchi and it had a bitter after taste. The beef hot pot definitely seemed worth the price but many of their dishes dont come with an additional starch. Probably best for the healthy types who live in Kailua. read more

I'll admit it. I'm a foodie. So for me to give 5 stars is a good indicator. I would agree with previous reviewers in that the food is somewhat over-priced, but honestly, considering the other options in Kailua, I generally don't mind paying. The garlic bread is some of the best I've ever had. It's unique in that it's grilled, giving it a crisp outside, but a warm chewy (in a good way) center. The salads are sublime - the Caprese salad with the pesto and 18-year-old balsamic vinegrette are worth the drive alone. The house salad (also with the phenomenal balsamic dressing) comes with goat cheese, sundried tomatoes, and organic greens (non of the iceburg lettuce that some restaurants shamefully try to pass off as a salad). We've enjoyed the pizzas - nice crisp crust, and light - for pizza anyway. I'd highly recommend this place. I would probably avoid it on a weekend evening, as you'll be waiting anywhere from 1/2 an hour to well over an hour. But lunch, or early dinners are worth it. read more

And I'm a sucker for anything with truffles or truffle oil. It's my kryptonite! We also had the creme brulee and the bread pudding. Everything was perfectly seasoned and properly cooked. This place would've been 5 stars but the service was terrible. It took 5 minutes for someone to even acknowledge us at the door. It took us more than 2 hours for lunch because we were waiting for someone to bring our drinks/take our orders/bring out our food/give us our check. Also, the strawberries in our dessert tasted like onions so my husband told the bartender (the only one not busy in the establishment) that the strawberries tasted like onions. All my husband got was a dumb look. Don't even get me started on cross contamination.... Despite the staff, I'll go back again to experience more dishes. We celebrated my daughter's 16 birthday here and we can't say enough good things. We were hoping they would have baked ziti on the menu as that is her favorite dish. Even though it was not a menu item, the chef whipped it up for her. My daughter is a very picky eater and she said it was the best she's ever had (her 2 friends ordered it as well and also loved it). My husband order the ahi and I ordered the chicken rotellini and both were delicious. We started with a caprese focaccia from the specials menu and it was also fantastic. They had a man playing guitar and singing and we thoroughly enjoyed his music selection and execution. He even sang happy birthday to her which the waiter organized. The restaurant is open air with a warm ambiance. Our service was exceptional from both the hostess, waiter and of course the chef. The kids ordered tiramisu and lava cake which I assume were good because I blinked and they were gone. I don't understand the 3 stars. Went here for a birthday dinner and yes it is noisy.... Food selection is good but prices are on the high side. Now the quality of the food is above average so you can bet that the portions aren't that big. The pizzas, braised short ribs, and rib eye steak are good. This isn't someplace you can afford to dine at often. On a special occasion maybe.. How about taking that guy or girl that doesn't stop talking on a date here. It's so noisy you won't be able to hear them so all you have to do is smile and nod your head once in awhile. Semi fine dining in Kailua. I LOVE Formaggio's!!! My husband and I decided to go for lunch to make up for not being able to go for dinner the night before. It wasn't busy at all! We got there after the lunch rush and I was sooo happy about that. Our waitress came and got our drinks pretty quickly. We decided to order things off the dinner menu, not wanting to settle for regular sandwiches. We got the foie gras and bruschetta to start. The foie gras was "melt in your mouth" delicious, rounding out the flavors with wine soaked pear? (i think, lol) and caramelized onions on a piece of toasted baguette. The bruschetta trio consisted of tomatoes, mushrooms with truffle oil, and roasted peppers w/ goat cheese. Delish! Finally the piece de resistance: roasted lamb with garlic mash potatoes... definitely worthy of the wait. It is to this day, both our favorite dish to get here. Our waitress brought us desserts, im guessing one was a peanut butter pudding with brownie crumbles, and the was a tiramisu mousse with a lady finger, both served up in shot glasses. I basically licked them clean! So yummy! The server was so on it! When people tell you the service makes the food taste better, believe it.
