Absolutely blown away. This place was recommended to my partner and I by multiple people so we put in the reservation. Upon arrival, we were asked for a password (which he could not find in his emails hot fortunately they gave us grace lol) then let in. The place was simply lit and each table had a literal gas lamp lighting the space. On the second floor there was a man playing the sax. It was SO gorgeous, Our waitress was great, we were easily influenced by all her suggestions and ended up getting a great meal. We started with drinks. My partner didn't hear her say that the bottom of the menu was "spirit forward" and ordered a VERY strong drink. It actually made for a very giggly and eventful dinner so it was a very happy mistake lol. I got the espresso martini. It was a little creamier than I expected but still tasted really good! I'd order again. Our first appetizer was the Wagyu carpaccio- topped with cilantro (the menu said dill but I saw/ tasted none), fried capers, and caviar. It was surprisingly light and refreshing, basically a meat salad. A beautiful start to our meal. Our second (yes, second) appetizer was the escargot and bone marrow. This was our personal star of the show. A complete 180 to the carpaccio. This was rich, heavy, and decadent. The tomato added a nice balance of acidity to counteract the fatty bone marrow. The escargot was cooked perfectly, no chew but soft and buttery. One of the best bites of my life. The salad it came with was just we needed with it. After this, there was quite a wait until our main entree. A fire dancer came, and danced on the bar counter. I'd say we waited a good 20 minutes until it came out. But we were only impatient because we had plans after dinner. Our main course, which we shared, was the King Arthur- beef Wellington with a side of crab legs. The crab did come out during our appetizers which I appreciated. I only ordered this because I never had beef Wellington before and really wanted to try it LOL, my partner said it was better than the one at hella kitchen! The waitress also talked us into ordering a side of Mac and cheese, and thank GOD she did. It came out piping hot and saucy. There was a slight note of truffle, but it wasn't overpowering, and a nice crust of cheese and breadcrumbs on top. Everything was delicious and generously portioned. Our group of 7 went here on a Monday night. We made a reservation a couple days in advanced and received the secret entry code a day before. Overall: It was a really cool experience. Live jazz music was a plus. Food was really good, especially for the portions of it. At the end we couldn't even get desserts since everyone was stuffed but happy. Best dish of night would be the Black Truffle Risotto. We would definitely come back just to get this dish alone. It could have been a 5 stars experience if one of our servers didn't seem to rush things to clear up the tables. My experience here started rough but it really did get better through the night, and the food was the saving grace. The bad: we received our "pass phrase" to get in for our reservation, but when we arrived at the telephone door they just asked for our name...defeating the point of a speakeasy experience. Then the waitress had us stand in a very crammed and busy walkway in the pub for 10/15 minutes only to tell us they had no tables available and that we have to sit at the bar (the barstools had no backs and were uncomfortable). It was very loud and small in the actual restaurant, and as they bussed all the other tables dirty plates they were staging them right in front of us at the bar? Not really what I want to look at all night if I'm paying over 130+ per person. Fortunately someone was a no show and they moved us to a table. I recommend stating you want a table when making reservations. The food: our food came out really fast and most of it was top tier and delicious in every way possible! Although, I did not care for the crab and artichoke dip. The crab was shredded and could easily be replicated with canned crab. If it were lump crab/chunky and bigger pieces of artichoke it would be way better in my opinion. The charred octopus was good but one tentacle was very rubbery while the other was soft and cooked well, I wouldn't get this again. The Yacht: hands down the best seafood tower I have ever tried. The seafood was bursting with flavor and most surprisingly it was grilled. The meat was still warm but placed on top of a bed of ice. The variety of lobsters, crab, shrimp, and the oysters were phenomenal. The mignonette and melted butter were perfect. Dutch Veal Chop: possibly the best piece of meat I've eaten in a very long time! The veal charred to perfection and the meat was so tender. The flavors were on point. Desserts: we tried the creme brûlée and butter cake. Again, I think this is my favorite crème brûlée! The flavor, texture and toppings were perfect. The butter cake was warm and melt in your mouth. Gaslamp is very expensive. If you come here knowing it's tucked in the back of a very crammed dive bar, and the actual restaurant it self is tavern-like and you probably can't see half the food you're eating you'll be fine lol. I've eaten at places with $200 plates of steak and Michelin star locations when I was in the mainland, and have often been disappointed. Being in the food industry for many years I believe good food doesn't have to cost that much, and I'd leave most fancy places hungry cause they give you small portions (I'm 6'6. A big dude who loves to eat). While this place is on the pricier end for my taste, I do think it's completely worth it. We ended up here for our anniversary and I think this spot is great for special occasions. It's an intimate atmosphere with live jazz music, the bartender Clark was very knowledgeable about drink recipes, the food was delicious, and the service was amazing. This place was an experience. Not just getting served expensive food. We probably spent $400 that night for 2 people, but thats what you would spend at a nice steak house anyways. This was such a fun night out with the girls! If you've never visited a speakeasy for dinner, definitely give this spot a try. The staff were all kind and knowledgeable of the menu. To start, we had the baked crab and artichoke dip (this was perfect for the three of us!) and then I had the black truffle risotto and added on the lobster tail. We had a reservation for a fairly large party (this is a TINY space!) booked well in advance, and the staff were so helpful at communicating the policies and planning the evening to accommodate our group. Everyone LOVED the experience. The presentations were all great, the food was incredible. As one member of our party said "I love how much fire this place uses!" Torched roasted garlic, smoked old fashioned, even a fire dancer! The only thing we ordered that felt subpar was the creme brulee... it was fairly loose and lacking the signature "tappable" layer on top. The tiramisu, on the other hand, was praised as one of the best they've had. Appetizers took 12 minutes. Entrees took 1 HOUR. Felt like our server was kinda avoiding us, lack of communication, and we got our entrees and drinks after others near us even though we ordered first. For reference, a table next to us got their entrees 30 minutes before us, even though we ordered before AND we ordered everything all at once. If she just communicated more, we'd be more understanding but she would check in on other people double the amount she would check on us. The better half of the world food tour duo trekked over to Kailua and met me at Gaslamp, on Hoolai St. The parking lot was full so we both found parking on the street. Hah, when I got back to my car, I found another car illegally parked behind me. So, parking appears to be an issue in this area. There is no signage outside that tells you it's Gaslamp, the signage says Kailua Town Pub and Grill. You have to go past the left side of the bar to a door, give a wait staff the secret passcode (which I failed to remember) and be taken through a door behind you, up a steep staircase to a small space overlooking the bar downstairs. There are about six tables and it's a very dark space. Natalie was our server and we started with a Botanist gin & tonic ($18) and a glass of J Lassalle Champagne ($25). I didn't have any details about the wine, but it was not complex and was lacking bubbles. We ordered the Kagoshima Wagyu Carpaccio($32) and the Escargot Bone Marrow ($42) to start. The carpaccio was a visual treat with capers, thin slices of radish, dill, pecorino and caviar. It tasted as good as it looked. The bone marrow was even better ... two large bones topped with garlic buttered escargot, decorated with blistered tomatoes, and an arugula salad with two pieces of grilled sourdough. So unctuous, so decadent, so divine! We split two entrees ... The Wagyu Sampler (market price, it was $179), and the Black Truffle Risotto ($54). We added extra truffle ($12) and a side of Miso Brussels Sprouts ($16). The sampler came with two pieces of A5 "Snow Beef", a piece of American "Wagyu" Filet Mignon, and pieces of ribeye an NY striploin, 12oz in all, and two sauces. The risotto contained sea asparagus, mascarpone and mozzarella cheeses, Hamakua mushrooms, and tomatoes. I consider the extra black truffle mandatory ... It's not special without it. We ended our meal by sharing a Tiramisu ($12) and I had an espresso ($5). The tiramisu was very good, made in the classic style with pieces of fruit on top. There was live music ... a saxophonist played soft jazz starting at 6:30pm. It was our kind of music. Service was fine ... we asked Natalie to slow down the delivery of food, and she ensured it was so. The food was great and we enjoyed our first visit to Gaslamp. I was so impressed with this restaurant that I couldn't wait to post a review. This was my first speakeasy and I didn't know what to expect. I made a reservation online and was texted the password to enter the restaurant once my reservation was confirmed. The outside looks like a casual sports bar. But once we entered, we saw the "telephone booth" on the left that led to the restaurant. The hostess checked us in by asking us for the password and verifying our ID. Once we were inside, the mood changed from a casual pub to an intimate five star restaurant. First of all, let's talk ambiance. We loved the intimate setting with a live musician playing music in the balcony area of the venue. It's pretty small so expect to be in close contact with the table next to you. However, we found it to be super romantic and relaxing. Now for the service. Let me just say that our server was amazing. She was friendly, knowledgeable, and checked on us throughout the night to ensure satisfaction. We did not feel rushed at all. She made great drink and food recommendations that left us feeling satisfied and inspired. I don't remember the names of the drinks but everything tasted delicious. The food was also top notch. Blown away! My boyfriend took me here for my birthday this past weekend and we don't eat red meat often, but this is by far the best steak I've had in my entire life. The beef wellington was also phenomenal. The french laundry was an A4 Wagyu Tomohawk! (definitely special occasion type of pricing, so just be aware). Service was very attentive, I felt bad for the servers because we were in the corner and it was obviously very hard for them to squeeze through people to get our food and drinks in this small speakeasy. There was a live saxophone player when we first got there, and of course... the infamous fire dancer. Honestly, such a great experience with so many things happening in such a small and intimate space. So we celebrated Valentine's a little early to beat the crowd. And I'm happy with our choice this year for sure. Our first ever speakeasy and it was slightly awkward but such a great time. We got our paraphrase for entry via text about 2hrs prior to our dinner. Arrived and lol my husband wasn't sure where to check in so he asked the pub worker aka the slightly awkward I mentioned earlier. Lol. Anyway we got to the entrance and waited for our hostess and we're seated almost right away. There's only about 5 tables here, so very intimate and romantic. I actually really enjoyed that, the hustle and bustle of steakhouses can be a little much sometimes. but let's get to the food, I specifically wanted beef Wellington, and I've only had Hy's steakhouse Wellington before. We got half order of oysters , truffle Parm fries King Arthur and ribeye with lobster. Food did take a bit to actually come out. But it was tasty, and I do wish some portions were little bigger. But I was definitely pleased with the pairing, portion of the 2 course King Arthur. My husband enjoyed his ribeye and oysters were tasty but seemed a little smaller than I imagined. I love a fun speakeasy so I was very excited to try Gaslamp. You walk through the restaurant and the entrance is in the back. You'll be required to provide a password that will be emailed to you shortly before your reservation. Inside it is VERY small. Only about 6 tables. No one in my group drank alcohol but we all did order mocktails. Our waiter said they couldn't make any drink on the menu virgin, which didn't make sense, so they created new cocktails for us to try. A beautiful spot for date night. It's a very small and intimate set up. I believe 5 tables and about 4 chairs for bar seating. The lights are very dim, live music and a wall of books for decor. Service is very good and we were given great drink recommendations. The tomahawk was FANTASTIC! ok, I wanted steak and this didn't disappoint. A few girlfriends and I tried Gaslamp for the first time recently. The ambiance was really cool, dark, full of candles and mood lighting with a nice jazz player upstairs. You need a password to enter which made us feel like vips. The area itself is very small but was still comfortable for our small group. The food I had ordered was the tuna dish and the charcuterie board. The food was okay, it was definitely underwhelming for the price. The drinks from inside Gaslamp are delicious but pricey. You can order from the main bar on the other side of the door but it's frowned upon to bring it into Gaslamp as told by our server. My biggest disappointments were we made a reservation at 9pm for two hours, were told we had to order a meal equating to $35, not including drinks, otherwise we'd be charged a $35 cover charge per person. We were also very rushed to graze the menu and order quickly as they were closing the kitchen soon. Understandably, but why allow reservations at 9pm for dinner if there's a lack of time to order. On top of that, we were asked to arrive 15 minutes after our reservation as they weren't ready for us. So that took more time away from ordering. Secondly, after our checks came, I made the mistake of assuming it was correct, tipping and signing. It wasn't until I looked at my receipt the following day that I realized I was charged an extra $18 for something it doesn't specify. Gratuity was not added to our checks and even if it was, $18 would have been almost 30-35% of my check. While I am glad to have had the opportunity to experience Gaslamp, the disappointments we had were enough for Gaslamp to be a one time experience. read more

So I don't come to Hawaii to eat steak. But I would eat this steak with my whole face. The people next to us had the wellington and tomahawk and said they were also incredible. The sauce for the steak was magical. We also did the caviar bump (you get a line of caviar on your hand and a chaser of sparkling or rose and the server does as well). The caviar is sturgeon and is good. The caviar service is the same but a whole tin and comes with creme and ikura. Drinks have humorous names and are well crafted and strong. I had the scallops which were cooked to perfection and generously covered with tobiko. My friend had the risotto which was rich and filling. They shaved some truffle on top. Some of the drinks are meant for sharing and some get fire! They lit a cinnamon stick in one too which made such a lovely aroma. You do need reservations and they will give you a secret code. You walk back behind the bar and go into a room that is dimly lit and has a lot of ambiance. Downsides: it is super cramped and not in a fun way. The music makes it hard to hear your server especially when they don't speak loudly. I don't recommend the bruschetta as it was on *bread* and not crossing, which made it soggy. This place is a very unique speakeasy . I loved this place and would go back here again. I went with the Mrs. and this was one of the top notch dining experiences I have ever had. When you first show up, you have to go through a bar and go to the telephone booth. The inside is very dark and obviously litter up by gas lamps. I got seated at the bar and the spacing is extremely tight and intimate. The bartenders were very professional and friendly and also super attentive. If you plan on coming here to get a drink and a good buzz, you certainly will. The drinks are made well and strong. However it is a nice strong. The first drink I got was a Dealers Choice and it was whatever the bartender surprised you with. It was very refreshing. I don't know what's in it but it was good I give it a 5/5. The second drink was Sushi in Mexico that my wife got and it came in a cool yellow skull. The presentation was so beautiful that we didn't want to touch it. It was strong and tasted fruity. The issue was it had too much ice. We give that drink a 4.8/5. The third drink was Rainbow Wings. I don't know how to describe it but it was one of the top notch drinks I have ever had. It was strong but tasted so good and addicting. It came out in a skull cup and it was another awesome presentation. 5/5. For starters we got the oysters and truffle fries. The oysters in my personal opinion was good but not worth the price. I got a half dozen and they came out super small. When I think of oysters I think of them like the size of Foodland oysters. The sauces were great. I'll give it a 3.9/5. The truffle fries were amazing. Super crunchy and soft and just seasoned super well. The Parmesan cheese makes it that much better too. The dipping sauces that came out paired well. I give these fries a 5/5. The main entree we got is the lobster risotto and the French Laundry. The lobster risotto was very rich and had lots of flavor. The texture and creaminess of it was on point. The only downfall is It should have came with a whole lobster and not just the tail. Overall I would recommend this. However due to the little meat, I will give this a 4.7/5. The French Laundry was the star of the show. It is a Wagyu Tomehawk Steak that's hung up and it comes with mashed potatoes, gravy, confit garlic, and butter. The butter is melted on top of the steak and the fat and butter land in the mash potatoes. My steak was suppose to be medium rare but it came out alittle more rare than expected. That's not too shabby. Everything about the dish was amazing. I give it a 10/5. The dessert we had was the crème brûlée which was very very delicious. Not much needed to be said. 5/5. Overall great experience! Dinner , ambiance, service and food is all amazing ! When you first walk in, it's a small pub. Looks like your walking into a kitchen . Then you see the bar and think this can't be it? As you continue walking to the telephone booth you see the secret entrance. Once you are in - the experience begins! From the ambience and the dimmed lights to the silhouette of the jazz player on the balcony in front of a f French window- you are transported into a totally different restaurant. The area is very small which makes it feel more exclusive as you do need a reservation to get in. In many ways it is like a speakeasy because the drinks are customized specifically for this restaurant. However it's not like a speakeasy anywhere else where you can make up your own drinks so do keep that in mind. it's not the type of speakeasy that you get to customize your drink act. But it's still very good drinks! Then we get to the food which was so delicious and so fun to experience exclamation the Porter house came hanging upside down as seen in the images. It did take a while for us to get our food, and I believe it's because we were waiting for the Porter house. This did make my beef Wellington feel a little cold and not as hot as I wish it tasted. Don't let the strip mall location fool you--Gaslamp is a true hidden gem. We chose it for a girls' night out to celebrate a friend's 60th birthday, and it delivered on every level. The atmosphere is intimate and elevated, with a live musician setting the tone on sax and flute, which added such a unique and memorable touch to the evening. Service was attentive and seamless, and the food absolutely stole the show. The seafood yacht and the dry-aged Japanese Wagyu tomahawk were standout centerpieces--both beautifully presented and packed with flavor. The octopus appetizer and black truffle risotto were also incredible--definite must-orders. The drink menu is thoughtfully organized, starting with lighter, fruit-forward options and progressing into more spirit-forward cocktails, which made it easy to navigate depending on your mood. Beer lovers should note the selection is limited, but it does include solid options like an IPA and a stout. One small surprise--desserts aren't listed on the main menu. We had planned to go elsewhere for something sweet, only to learn they do offer rotating dessert options that change frequently. Good to know for next time! We have been to Gaslamp in Kailua many times over the years and spent far too much $$ (its very expensive), including later in the evening for cocktails, so last night's - being Friday night - experience was especially disappointing. We arrived around 9:00 p.m. on a Friday night. and asked if we could have a drink. The place was not full and the bar was open - yet we were left waiting nearly 20 minutes while staff checked with the manager. When he finally came down from the Loft, we were simply told, "We don't seat after 9:30," and he walked away. The posted hours online say Monday through Thursday 4:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. and Friday through Sunday 4:30 p.m.-10:45 p.m. If there is an earlier cutoff for late-evening guests, that should be communicated clearly and respectfully. Update your advertised times if the times are incorrect. The issue was not just being told no. It was the dismissive and disrespectful way it was handled. As longtime patrons, we expected and deserved much better. Don't advertise yourself as a speakeasy if you are apparently the exact opposite of what that implies. A speakeasy is traditionally a discreet, hidden bar, and in modern use it implies an intimate, inviting cocktail experience. It seems like guests are being screened selectively, which is not a good look for any business, especially one trading on atmosphere and hospitality. We won't be back and we will make sure we share with others so they don't have to experience the unnecessary brush off. Hopefully, someone will open another speakeasy in Kailua. read more

The steak was good The Brussels sprouts were just okay The mashed potatoes were decent, but the gravy really made them The mac and cheese was average The crab was stringy and hard to get out of the shell The blue crab artichoke dip was actually really good Service was where things fell apart. It took about 20 minutes just to get our first drinks (a tequila on the rocks, wine, and Old Fashioneds that are prepared tableside). Then it took another 20 minutes just to get another tequila on the rocks. It's a small restaurant, so that wait time felt excessive. The bartenders seemed slow, and at one point were taking shots behind the bar and scrolling on their phones. If you're charging steakhouse prices, the service should really match the price point. There are definitely other steakhouses where you can get better food and much better service. read more

The restaurant is really small. It has several tables and a bar seating area. It is Located inside of the pub in the back. I highly recommend to have a reservation. If you have a party of 10 call, email and book online with highest party then put in the notes for party of 10. It took me weeks for my reservation to be confirmed. I had party of 8/10 and wasn't seated until 30 minutes after our reservations. We even checked in 15 mins prior to reservation as directed. We sat down at 8:45pm and the food started coming out at 1030pm. The drinks didn't take as long. They were strong and delicious. Probably since there is a bar for that area. It also has a saxophone player on the second floor playing music. The food was 4/5 overall. The Brussels sprouts in the gravy was not good. Gaslamp is a hidden speakeasy-style restaurant with a fun, theatrical vibe. You enter through a secret corridor and narrow mirrored hallway before reaching a dark, velvet-filled lounge with a moody '70s-'80s aesthetic. Very "candlelit, gaslamp" atmosphere. The ribeye steak was the standout, perfectly cooked, extremely tender, and likely Wagyu. Absolutely delicious. The scallops were also cooked perfectly. The oysters were good, though slightly disappointing since there were only four for the price. The beef carpaccio was decent but had too many toppings, which overpowered the raw meat. Entertainment was a highlight. A performer did fire dancing (including putting fire in her mouth), and there was a talented live musician who played saxophone and several other instruments. The live music elevated the experience. The tiramisu at the end was excellent, not overly sweet, which I appreciated since I'm usually not a dessert person. Overall, it's a great spot if you enjoy a moody speakeasy atmosphere, live entertainment, and a well-cooked steak. read more
