We made reservations for an early valentine's day weekend dinner on the 10th and enjoyed dinner from our scheduled reservation time of 7:00pm until finishing around 7:55 pm we waited about 20 minutes for an extremely overworked waiter who was working the entire back room by himself to finally give us the check. The night didn't go south until the stressed, anxious, and bald manager continued to hover behind me at the entrance of the back dining room where we were seated. and after rudely asking us if we could leave so he could fill our seats as they were clearly overbooked. Mind you the table next to us was not asked to leave although they were already seated and being served their meals as we arrived and were still chatting over empty drinks and an unbussed table. I'm not sure if it was because we were a gay couple or if it was because we were a latino couple but something just didn't sit right with me and that interaction. Came here for brunch on a Saturday, they're not crowded as the other up and coming restaurant. The restaurant is very spacious with outdoor patio. The ambiance is quiet and classy. For brunch we ordered the pork hah, Cesar salad, and squid ink shrimp pasta. Our favorite was the pasta although I do wish they had use the jumbo shrimp instead of the small baby ones. The Cesar salad was tasty however, they put way too much salad dressing that it tasted a bit salty. The pork hash was very flavorful on the first bite but as we ate more, it started to get greasy and salty. Our dessert was the chocolate cake and it was a great decision to have cake in the afternoon! It was very tasty like I'm eating Ferraro rocher! I'd love to come back for dinner. read more

It's been a week since we had dinner here and have not stopped thinking or talking about it. The food was absolutely incredible. As a vegetarian, I was a little worried that there wouldn't be enough options, but there were definitely a few great ones. I had the Bucatini Cacio e Pepe and it was creamy and delicious! Have not stopped thinking about it. My boyfriend had the Sweet Corn Cappelletti which I believe is a seasonal dish. It was a great mouthfeel and the filling was delicious in flavor. As an app, we got the Giant White Bean per our server's recommendation which we loved. The service was great as well. The carbonara was creamy without being overly rich, and the orecchiette had a nice spice with the mint. It was my first time having beef carpaccio, and the blend of arugula, parmesan, and truffle was very tasty. The service was also great. The server we had was training another one, and she was so kind and checked in with us to ensure we were having a good time. She also gave us the gelato which was very nice of her! Mary's bday dinner was at Formentos in Fulton Market. The ambience is cozy, the waitstaff is nice and they even had gluten free bread service with the best tasting olive oil and garlic. The burrata was good, but the smallest ball of burrata I've seen served at a restaurant and we split it between 5 of us... The octopuss was some of the most tender I've ever had. Tents were up! - 7/8 tents! I'm not an oyster fan, but supposedly they were pretty good for eating oysters in the Midwest. The gluten free pasta was incredibly disappointing. I got the Cacio e Pepe GF noods and Annie got the regular one. They don't even look like the same pasta sauce, and according to Annie, they tasted different too. My sauce was too oily and I just tasted salt and oil on a deflated GF nood. It was a 4/10 pasta dish. Having been here multiple times for dinner decided to try brunch. If I could give 0 stars I would. Not even the same restaurant. The food was inedible, staff was rude, and kitchen so slow at that. Caesar Salad + Shrimp: The dinner Caesar was so good when we went 2 months ago but what I got this time was worse than a salad mix at Jewel Osco. They served me TWO small chilled shrimp split in half as if I am dumb enough to think I got four pieces. The romaine was wilted and pretty much the end clumpy pieces of the head of lettuce. Croutons were soggy and the color as if it was laced with hot Cheetos. My daughter ordered the Formento's Breakfast and the bacon was sus. Super rubbery and an odd color. After one bite we did not allow her to finish in fear of food poisoning. The hash brown which I guess is what you call it was a mystery patty that was burnt. $93 later we had to go eat somewhere else. What happened to this place? Even the bathrooms were missing garbage bags. Most restaurants suffer from a slow death but this is fast! We will not be back. So gross and so disappointing. read more

We went on a beautiful summer saturday night, which just started things off on a good note! The outdoor seating is spacious and well set up: very comfy, good spot on randolph to people watch. We ordered some drinks, both tasty and strong, and started off which some juiiiiicy crab legs. The crab was super good, but also at $75 for half a lb of crab legs, that was the expectation. We then ordered a caesar salad, carbonara, and a side of brussel sprouts. The caesar salad and carbonara were okay. I thought the portion of the caesar salad was a bit small, and the lettuce didn't taste super fresh. I did like the garlic croutons and the boquerones, though I would have preferred more broken down anchovies actually in the dressing itself. Carbonara was nice and creamy, but something just felt a little lacking...the bucatini maybe? Not my fav noodle, so that might be on me. Without a doubt, the star of the show was the got dang brussel sprouts. They were SO good!!! The combo of the red wine vinaigrette, parm, and whatever else was in there + perfect 10/10 crispiness = the best brussel sprouts I've ever had, maybe??? Let me start by saying the flavors and the ambiance at this restaurant definitely defend Formentos quality reputation- 5 star experience! The reason I gave 4 stars is because of the service. It was busy, but the wait time for ordering, between courses, and between drinks seemed a little longer than it should have been. I also had to send back my drink because there was the wrong liquor in it (I ordered a Tito's martini and there was gin instead). By the time I received the correct drink, my friends were already done with their second round. With all that being said - our waiter was extremely personable and made up for it by taking a few things off our tab, which he didn't have to do. Now for the food... For the APPS, the Whipped Ricotta was crazzyyyy and is a must have. I ended up scraping the plate of the Whipped Ricotta with my fork because it was that good. I was even debating on licking the plate. A little sweet, a little spicy, a lot of flavor. The cauliflower was also good and would probably get it again. The PASTA dishes we had was perfectly cooked, each having their own personality that made them stand out. My favorite one I tried was probably the Bucatini Cacio E Pepe. Few ingredients, BOLD flavor. The Orecchiette had a nice spice to it and tomatoes were little flavor bombs. The Bucatini Carbonara tasted like a fancy mac and cheese, with the pancetta adding a nice saltiness to the dish. The TIRAMISU.... I wish that my words can express the amount of dimension in this dessert. Creamy, crunchy, and that cake was incredibly moist. I don't usually order tiramisu, so take this as you wish , but this was the best tiramisu I have ever had. We ended up taking one home for an encore. We also got a shrimp cocktail which was 5 pieces of large shrimp. This was ok = overpriced, the highlight was the horseradish mustard sauce. The rest of our meal included Cacio E Pepe, Chicken Parmesean, 2 NY Strips, Canestri with gravy and the Carbonara. Sides of asparagus and crispy potatoes. Everything was solid and I thought the mains were fairly priced. The potatoes were a standout, very large portion, crispy, spicy and everyone enjoyed them. The fresh pasta was also a nice surprise on the Carbonara. Our server had to be prompted for second drinks for 2 in the party and never asked the others. After dinner, he finally spent more time (too little, too late) talking more about the desserts, which we wound up passing on. Not sure the reasoning behind it but we mixed it all up together and the ricotta made it so delicious and creamy! - Bucatini carbonara: The pancetta made it a nice salty but I'm glad we shared it between the three of us since it was quite rich. Sides: we shared the Brussels sprouts. Perfectly crispy and savory with the balsamic and Parmesan! Always love ordering this when restaurants have it - they almost always nail it! 5 Stars!! My fiancé and I live in Chicago and love Italian food, and Formento's is our new favorite spot in the city. The service was phenomenal, shout out to David and team. The restaurant ambiance was a perfect blend of intimate, good background noise to ensure you don't hear the table next to you and great service. We started with the homemade focaccia bread, caesar salad and fried calamari. BEST calamari I've had in chicago, perfectly breaded and fresh. The Caesar salad had lots of fresh Parmesan shredded cheese and was lightly dressed. We split the chicken parm and Canesri. Just wow! Perfectly cooked and the Cansesri had great flavor. You can tell that the sauces, pasta and bread are all made fresh in house. Lastly, we had the chocolate cake and the Apple Crosata. The chocolate cake was so fresh, but small. The Apple Crosata was delicious and clearly the fan favorite as multiple servers said it was their favorite dessert. David and team were so kind and also brought over a small portion of Tiramisu and WOW. I'd get the tiramisu for sure next time we go. What can I say? The gluten-free risotto was amazing! They made it with a Pecorino because I have a dairy allergy but can tolerate sheep milk. The truffle in it was outstanding. I was able to enjoy gluten-free bread and we shared a few bottles of wine. We all had a variety of items and everyone left happy. I had the carpaccio for the app as well. Risotto - flavor was really good, but was a little on the hard side so it could've used a little more time cooking. Service- We came on a Friday evening and service was extremely slow. It was very difficult to place orders, water refills were slow, and we asked for a bread refill twice and waited forty minutes until the bread came. When it came we had already finished everything else. I'm pretty sure a waitress also muttered at me as I was getting up from the table because I assume I was in her way. Ambiance- even though we made a reservation, we were seated outside, so I dont know. Food- the carbonara was very good! It was very creamy and the egg yolk and pancetta held the dish together well. However, there was a lot of water at the bottom, I'm assuming because the pasta was not drained properly? Shrimp cocktail- it was literally five small shrimp on ice with sauce on the side (see picture). It was good but the one at Whole Foods tastes better. Calamari- the squid was crispy, flavorful and had the perfect amount of chewiness, but there was a lot of fried artichoke (pickled artichoke too) which was very strange. It had a mushy texture and tasted fishy. I just find pickled artichoke a very strange thing to fry. Espresso - I can't believe this was $6. No self respecting Italian restaurant should serve this and call it Espresso. There was no crema on top and it was clearly too thin, and I doubt it came from a espresso machine. It was just filter coffee. I don't know if the server just made a mistake and gave me coffee. I also asked for cream and sugar on the side but only got cream. There were more garnishes than the actual seafood. Not a fan and I was craving scallops so this was a bust. The grilled branzino didn't have that fishy taste (thank God!). However without the kale salad on top, the fish was bland. Cooked perfectly but bland. I also forgot how annoying it is to eat a fish with the bones. Makes the dish more finger food than enjoyable since you can't focus on the dish without wondering if there is a bone in the bite you just ate. Sighhhh The panna cotta - there was potential but the peaches which look like the star of the show was a fail. If you look at the picture closely you'll notice a cranberry jam in the back. Yeahhhh that! THAT was a the star of the dish. It carried well with the flavors and the sprinkle of pistachios added texture and depth. For our next course it was two kinds of pastas. One tasted like outstanding buttered noodles but I think that's how the dish is supposed to taste. Either way it was simple and delicious. The other pasta was pork neck gravy with Burata, it was also tasty. For the meat entree I had the short rib. Decent portion size but I thought it was just ok. Horrible customer service experience this time around. I'm not sure if they're going through budget cuts or what but the bartenders they have here are not up to par for this level of a restaurant. I was here this evening, stopping in to have an after work cocktail so I decided to sit at the bar. The two bartenders are the worst I've experienced in a long time and the first I've experienced in this type of upscale restaurant. They're both Hispanic and are not friendly. They do not greet you when you sit down. You have to let them know what you want and the one with the ponytail is so rude when he didn't hear me because the level of music along with the restaurant noise - his response to me was "What?" I mean like don't you know answering someone what is rude as hell? How about an "can you please repeat that?' They speak Spanish to one another only behind the bar which is also rude. They never asked me once my food came if everything was Ok, if I needed anything or if I would like anything else. Not a single check in, but there was a couple sitting next to me who must be regulars and they both asked them "how was their meal" "if they would like more bread" "if they would like more ice tea." I was so appalled at the low level of customer service and outright disrespect. They both need customer service training, like expeditiously. This experience has left be feeling so underwhelming with my experience that I will not be back if these two are still behind the bar. read more

From the complimentary bread, to the meatball appetizers to each course - wonderful. Nonna's meatballs were so tender and crisped juuuuuust enough for a little added flavor. Delicious. Now let me tell you, when it comes to pastas, I don't know one thing over the next. I literally need to look everything up for pictures, so I was hoping for the best when I ordered my strozzapreti. I was thrilled with the tenderness of the pasta (not too soft) and the flavor of the sauce. Add that with a glass of wine from their extensive list and some well-seasoned broccolini and I was in heaven. Don't skimp on the dessert - that tiramisu was an explosion of flavor. Pair it with a scoop of gelato - woosh. Wonderful. And don't get me started on the service. SUPERB. We sat outside and those heaters that lots of restaurants have are not my favorite - especially when there are a lot of them turned to the max and close by each other. I was sweating forreals. BUT, the busser reached out to the manager who personally came out and checked on me and adjusted it. Just. Like. That. And then checked on me AGAIN later. Wow. Been wanting to try this place for so long but haven't been able to without a reservation, so definitely plan ahead! Formento's gives its customers an upscale, fine dining experience for a reasonable cost. During summer months, they offer an open outside patio. Now as we go into winter, they converted the patio to a heated patio with covering. My favorite dish by far was the Pacherri.
