We ordered a starter of wings which were fantastic! The spicy apricot flavor was new and unique. I really enjoyed it. Spicy but not overpowering. The table ordered a total of 4 small pizzas. Each one of them came out perfect. Mine was crispy just as I asked. There was a generous amount of toppings. I visited for dinner on a weeknight, around 6:00 pm. The restaurant was busy but the outdoor seating was all wet from rain earlier so no one was outside. I was given a choice of waiting 30 minutes for a table or immediate seating at one of the two bars. I chose the bar. There is a large cocktail menu, larger than the food menu. There is wine and beer also but I didn't see any kind of tap list for beer so I suspect it was all bottles. I ordered a mojito which was fine. The food menu has pizzas and burgers and that sort of thing. I had a small margherita pizza. It was big enough to share but also I ate the whole thing myself. It had a red sauce, fresh tomato slices, blobs of cheese, and some fresh greens that were not basil (although the menu said basil, this was small leaves on long stems). It was good. I would recommend removing the tomato skins, because they became stringy and difficult to eat. The crust was cooked well but did not have much flavor. Service was good, since I was at the bar it was easy to get the bartender's attention, and she did a great job making drinks for the whole dining room and keeping eyes on us. She never had a minute's rest while I was there. Overhearing other conversations I gathered that the restaurant recently reopened in this location on the corner of Main Street and hambly. On street parking is plentiful as well as a couple of nearby city lots that are free. There were a few items on the menu that were not in stock yet, the online ordering and to-go window are not ready, and that sort of thing. read more

Worst service experience that I have had anywhere on Earth in 50 years. I like their pizza and used to like the place (we've eaten here many times over the years). Waitress had a several minute conversation with the table next to us as our pizzas were dying in the window and I had to interrupt and ask her to get them. I apologized profusely a few times to the waitress and to the customers ( the customers said not to worry and that they would have done the same). When we were ready to leave I waived for a solid minute to the waitress who was deep in conversation with the "manager" at the bar, and finally said excuse me. The waitress immediately threw off an attitude and the "manager"gave me a solid stink eye a few times after that. I said sorry to interrupt. As we were leaving I approached the "manager"to clear the air. I said sorry, I get the sense that I offended you; she lied and said no. She then went on to say that I didn't have to be "rude and aggressive, and then mocked my waving. Then she said that if I knew anything about being a server I would know that the server did nothing wrong ( I never said she did, I had simply explained my own actions). I explained I worked in the industry for fifteen years when I was younger (1 year serving in fine dining, formal kitchen apprenticeship at a country club and years as a head chef). I could explain to the "manager" that she could have run the pizzas when her server was engaged in conversation since she was doing absolutely nothing as the pies were dying under heat lamps. My kids were waiting right outside the door and the "manager" and I were near the kitchen in the back. When I rejoined my kids they commented that they couldn't hear my side of the conversation but they could hear the "manager" since her voice was raised. I thought (and hoped) the " manager" might be new ( and hopefully would not last) she said she was "an original". She sure is. read more

I have been going to Fortify Pi for years. This past Sunday I thought I would go by the new location and get a pizza. I ordered online and got the meatball appetizer and a pizza. First...the meatball appetizer had 3 flavorless meatballs sitting on top of some flavorless, cold grits. It wasn't terrible but..OK. something you could probably get frozen from the store. The kicker tho..it was 17 dollars! For 3 flavorless meatballs. The pizza..25 dollars...was cold...very little flavor. The crust was soggy and not like it used to be. Fortify pizzas used to be top notch...this isn't it. It kind of looked like a Fortify pizza... but tasted like a cheap and flavorless imitation. I ended up throwing half of it away. We have very few options of restaurants in a small town like clayton and its sad to see one of my go to places go downhill so badly. read more

First, let me just say that the food here was excellent! The 3 star review is related to the service/attitude, not the quality of the food. When we arrived we asked for a table for 4 and the young girl immediately said it was a 25 minute wait, even though there were a couple of tables paying their bill. There were also 4 seats at the bar, even though they needed to be moved to be together, but she said there was no seating available at the bar. Her attitude basically said "go away." Also, there's a sign that says "once you're on the wait list, you must wait OUTSIDE." And the menu says no 1/2 and 1/2 pizza, no substitutes, no slices. Again, they're not very welcoming or accomidating. That said, our server was very friendly and efficient. The food was delicious and the ambiance was great! read more

Everything about this meal was great! The service was fast and friendly and I love the decor and theming...from the chemistry beaker chandelier, to the periodic table hanging in the bathroom. Very clean and modern! The star of the show, however, was the pizza. I had the Newton. The combo of the sweet fig jam, salty prosciutto, tangy goat cheese....it was perfection! My wife had the Papa Pesto which was also so delicious. The pesto was light but flavorful and of course the prosciutto was delish, cheese was melty and stringy. Highly recommend both! The Newton, the wonderful pizza with fig spread, prosciutto, mozzarella cheese and arugula is back on the menu and as delicious as ever. One of my favorite places to stop for lunch when in the mountains. They now feature burgers, too, which I have yet to try because I can't resist the pizza, but I will soon do that. Expanded new location just north up the street from the former site. Main restaurant with revised dinner menu there too. So it's Saturday night in Clayton and the wait here was at least an hour. Be prepared to wait and don't think you can just walk up and eat. We started with the soup of the day. We have visited several times, either as a couple or with family who are visiting. Each time, we have enjoyed the food, and service is efficient. As a gluten intolerant person, I appreciate their cauliflower pizza crust, and it's tasty enough that hubby doesn't mind sharing with me. Our favorite pizza is the Forest Mushroom. Fortify Pi offered delicious wood fired pizza! My family of 4, with 2 boys ages 9 & 11, enjoyed everything at Fortify. We started with appetizer-the mozzarella bites. They have one large table and we grabbed it. Lucky for us we beat the rush. So be prepared you may have a wait on a busy weeknight. Ordered up a craft beer called Teufel Hunden which those that know me to know I just had to order. We also ordered three apps, two actually arrived. The cheesy bread and the lamb meatballs were a hit with me but not for everyone. Meatballs could have been a meal by themselves and at 10 bucks a great value. We ordered meat lovers, pepperoni and sausage and the butternut squash pizza. The pizza was delicious. Like I said the thirty-minute drive gave them a high bar to get over. Minus missing actually getting our third app fired they did well. Staff was attentive and platooned our service. They do add a 20% service charge to parties of 6 or more so be warned. But hey are clever as they let you add even more of a tip on the CC slip. We caught it and they got their 20%. NOt a fan of that practice for six people....8 or ten maybe. But I imagine they have been stiffed and it is a touristy town in Clayton. Regardless we found ourselves fortified and left with full bellies after eating at Fortify Pi. read more

I went here for lunch on a Saturday with my family, so 3 of us. I was waiting to get our name on the list at the hostess stand for over 15 minutes while 3 separate women tried to navigate the waitlist. An older woman who appeared to be in some sort of management position yet with no obvious knowledge of how to run FOH operations, kept trying to take over when she should have just let the hostess do her job. Another server, who looked to me as if she was probably the most experienced of all 3 of them seemed clearly frustrated when asking me if I'd been helped yet to which my response was 'no'. We got our name on the list, finally and was told that the wait could be anywhere from 5-20 minutes, I was fine with that. To my surprise, I was notified less than 5 minutes later that our table was ready. We happily took our seats expecting to order drinks soon but there we waited, again, for another 15+ minutes until our server finally came, took our drink AND food order and walked away. Our drinks came, my husband ordered a rum runner and I a Paloma, made it a double and it was okay. I later realized that adding that extra shot also added a whopping $6 to my drink order!! Our food came and the pizza was good, the burger was only okay and the greek salad was perfect. We decided to order a second drink and again, we waited. My husband and I could see our drinks in the window where they sat and sat while servers went by and did nothing. We finished our meal and were ready for our check when another server not ours, brought the drinks to which we declined as they had been sitting for some time and were for sure watered down at this point. The server gave us a bit of an attitude while explained that our server was under age an unable to serve alcohol. I am not a stranger to the industry so I am well aware of this law, however if this is the case with one of your servers then the other servers need to be vigilant of this and make sure that her drinks get served in a timely manner. Overall, the food was good but the service and the overall running of the FOH was lacking. I loved their old location and we never had an issue there which makes me think that the owners are trying to do too much too fast. One of my favorite sayings is 'Keep it simple stupid,' I believe that if more restaurant owners stuck to this mind set, they would have more success then if they try to do more. read more

BUT at $20 for a small specialty and $26 for the same specialty in large, you'd expect the small to be 20/26=0.77 the area of a large. Especially since the menu doesn't seem to say otherwise. Alas, it's not. The small is only a measly 10". Area to area, the small is only 39% of a large in size but 77% of a large in price. I recently ordered the Forest Mushroom Pizza to go while I was spending a few days in Clayton. I decided to place my order to go since the restaurant did not have outdoor seating. I have been very picky about where I dine during the Covid pandemic and outdoor seating is a must for me at this time. I placed the order over the phone and the pizza was ready 20 minutes later. I had to enter the restaurant to pick up my order since they did not offer curbside delivery. Even though all the restaurant staff were wearing face masks, many patrons in the restaurant did not wear masks even when they were not seated at their table. A few of the maskless patrons were standing huddled at the inside entrance of the restaurant which made me very uncomfortable upon entering. The pizza was ok. Busy and fun vibe. We shared a Greek salad which had local goat cheese. It was fresh & delicious. We ordered two pizzas...the Newton & the Meatlovers. Crust was excellent. Just the right char. Dough was substantial enough to support the toppings, which all tasted premium. Some interesting beers were on tap while others were typical. Nothing crazy. Overall we had an excellent meal.
