We had my dad's 90th birthday yesterday. Nine people figured we'd try fortune Star the service was OK. The food was below average hardly no taste. The only thing that actually was OK was the hot and spicy soup, so disappointing 240 dollars fried rice bland chowfun chow mein boring potstickers OK Kung pow chicken where's the chicken broccoli beef where's the beef? Should've figured it out when we went there to pick it up at lunchtime place was empty.btw I have runs for the past hour

First time coming in. Nice and clean and good spacing between tables. We only seen 2 of the staff but both very nice. The food came out fast and hot. We both enjoyed our meal. The Szechuan prawns were delicious and we also got the salt and pepper prawns. Also delicious and I highly recommend them both. The chow mein was very tasty as well and all of the dishes that we ordered there was plenty of. Would definitely return.

Food was made fast! We got some dumplings first. These were expensive since there were only 6! We enjoyed the tomatoes and noodles with beef. Super sweet but still delicious. So so tasty! Then we got a chicken dish that was slightly spicy. I forget the name. We finally got a seafood dish that came with a good variety. The sauce was filled with umami and it paired well with our other dishes. This is def comfort American Chinese food. They have a lot of dinner packages too.

Fortune Star Chinese Restaurant is located in San Mateo. I had passed by this place many times. I decided to try it out. I entered during off peak hours -- it was between lunch and dinner. I looked over the menu and placed an order to go. Soon a couple came in to eat. I studied the menu while they were seated. Soon my order was ready. I took my goods while the waitress took the couple's order. The food was good. I will make it a point to make a return visit to dine indoors next time.

It's spot on for cheap, greasy, msg filled Chinese takeout food. My parents wanted to sit in so we did, and honestly it was a decent experience. It was super casual where you didn't need to dress up for it at all, and we ordered their Fortune Star dinner. If you didn't know, you always get served the soup first, then the rest of the entrees after finishing the soup. We did order a few extra dishes on top of what was there as well, and rice is extra. Around 10 dishes + soup served around 9 people, the food came out super fast, they took care in making sure that vegetarian dishes and non vegetarian dishes were separate, and we pretty much finished everything. Yeah, stuff like the beef with satay had so much MSG you could probably be the cause of California's drought problem with all that thirst for water, but when you crave for some Walnut prawns or cream cheese wontons at 3pm when everything else is closed it's a decent option. Overall, it's decent if there aren't any other options, and also if I want Chinese takeout.

Was craving Chow Mein at 2pm while at work so it's either a Chinese restaurant or Safeway. So I drove over 25th Ave and saw a Chinese resto with parking right in front. Saw that they have lunch special that extends till 2:30pm, I ordered the Chicken with string beans and noodles. Order was done in 5minutes. Paid $15.00 for a very salty chicken lunch and very bland noodles. I should have just gone to Safeway!

Decent service. Terrible chow fun noodles, almost-ok beef, some onion and nothing else to it. Dingey, not a great experience.

I came with a friend and got seated immediately. In terms of service, there wasn't too much interaction with the staff since you order via QR code, but they will come over and put your receipt on the surface of the table and check off your items as they bring them out. Initially, my friend and I thought they grilled the skewers on the plate at the table; however, it comes pre-cooked and grilled, and the plate itself is there to keep your food warm. I looked under, and it's "powered" by a bunch of tea candles. Between both of us, we ordered some skewers of enoki mushrooms (which was my favorite, super tender and flavorful), some beef skewers, a beef skewer with lychee (super unique), beef tongue (a bit tough for my liking), and chicken skin (extremely crispy, somewhat hard to pull off the skewer). I want to call out again the beef with lychee since this was an item I do not see often. It was interesting because the beef was seasoned well and when combined with the lychee, it added a refreshing note; however, the lychee's textural profile was similar to fatty beef, which personally threw me off a bit as someone who tends not to like fatty cuts (if you are a fan though, you'll like this). Overall, this spot is an okay place to check out if you're in the area. Parking in this area of San Mateo is limited, but the restaurant itself has a lot of tables, so it can be good for bigger parties.

Recently I stopped to pick-up dinner with the plan to have leftovers. I called my order in and was quoted 40 minutes for my order to be ready. My order consisted of salted fish and chicken fried rice (this location has the best around SF and the peninsula), bitter melon beef, chicken chow mein, Thai style fried vermicelli (my favorite dish here), salt and pepper chicken wings. We also received a complimentary bbq pork fried rice. Everything was fantastic and we had plenty of leftovers for a few days.

Big won ton filled w pork and shrimp. Bok choy Broth not much flavor, in a separate container since this was a take-home order. Curry Beef Stew I've never had Curry beef stew before, prefer chicken, curry, but for some odd reason, I decided to order this dish. It was underwhelming and I won't order it again. The Curry sauce itself was OK but the big long pieces of beef were somewhat gross, lots of fat. They added plenty of slices to onions and a few pieces of green pepper and Julienned carrots, but that's about it for being called a stew. So I learned my lesson by not sticking to my usual order, and won't order wonton soup or curry beef stew again.

I've visited many times, and the consistency of the authentic flavors keeps me coming back. The menu is a deep dive into Shanghainese classics. My personal recommendations: The Staples: You can't go wrong with the Xiao Long Bao, Stir-Fry Rice Cakes, and the Sweet Spare Ribs. The Spicy Pickled Stomach and the Small Shrimp are favorites of mine. Their Cold Noodles and Yellow Croaker are excellent representations of the cuisine. If you visit during the week, check out their lunch specials. Service & Timing The kitchen is generally quite efficient. While a few specific items might take a bit longer to prep, most dishes arrive at the table surprisingly fast. Just be prepared for a crowd--it gets very busy during the lunch rush! There is a small, limited parking lot behind the restaurant, but it fills up fast. If there is an event at the San Mateo Event Center, street parking becomes very challenging. We were approached almost immediately after sitting down, and even after asking for a few minutes to look at the menu, the waiter kept coming back quickly, which made the experience feel pressured. The waiter also recommended a "Chinese broccoli with beef" that wasn't on the menu, which felt a bit unusual.
