We've been coming here for a really long time (15+ years) and the food is hit or miss. Some days it's really good, some days it's really bad. I don't know if they change cooks or if they don't have enough business that they serve old reheated food or they just don't care some days. We picked up take out on 6/15 and the food was amazing! Everything was delicious! Hot and fresh, my husband and I stuffed ourselves and then went back for more later that night! =) Tonite my husband just picked up dinner (7/1) and my bbq pork fried rice tastes like burnt oil and lots of pieces of pork fat (not bbq pork). The sesame crispy beef is usually a favorite but tonite it's drowned in sauce (not crispy), really oily and it's weird like they put a tempura batter on it. My bbq pork also has a lot of fat and it's kinda brown, like the meat is old. We paid almost $70. and neither of us can power through this dinner so in the trash it goes....=( I wish Fortune Star was consistently delicious, we would be eating there a couple times a week. My favorite was the walnut prawns as the shrimp were the perfect size and the coating was tasty! The green beens and beef dish was yummy too but the beef was a bit tough to chew on. First time coming in. Nice and clean and good spacing between tables. We only seen 2 of the staff but both very nice. The food came out fast and hot. We both enjoyed our meal. Food was made fast! We got some dumplings first. These were expensive since there were only 6! We enjoyed the tomatoes and noodles with beef. Super sweet but still delicious. So so tasty! I came with a group of 7 around 6 pm on a Sunday and there wasn't any other table there until closing. That's gotta tell ya something but there were take out orders at least. We generally like this restaurant and have been going here for years. We recently had lunch there and it was just OK. The pork with mixed vegetable were very watery, sweet, over cooked pork, and the vegetables were soggy. My wife chow mien did not look fresh and seemed to have been prepared much earlier. We took our who family there for my mother-in-law's 90th birthday... she loves Chinese food. The food was delicious, and we had a ton of people there. They were very nice and brought us plate after plate of food. Everyone commented on how good it was. The staff was very patient with us as we all sang "Happy Birthday" to the family's matriarch. Fortune Star Chinese Restaurant is located in San Mateo. I had passed by this place many times. I decided to try it out. I entered during off peak hours -- it was between lunch and dinner. I looked over the menu and placed an order to go. Soon a couple came in to eat. I studied the menu while they were seated. Soon my order was ready. I wound up here because it was the nearest Chinese restaurant to where I could find parking. I had no idea what to expect. My eye was caught on the menu by 'hot braised shrimp' but what I got from it was quite unlike that dish at other restaurants. The shrimp (fortunately with no shells or tails) were breaded and the sauce was thin but dark and rich. Veggies were carrots and bell peppers. But it was very tasty. The shrimp themselves were hefty enough, the breading remained crisp and was unusually flavorful and less mealy than Chinese breading often is, and the sauce was quite appealing. Pot stickers for appetizer were also hefty and crisp, not over-breaded. I was just about the only customer for an early dinner, and the others were not Asian, not a good sign, but I was quite satisfied with the food here. read more

So grateful they were open for Christmas Day. It's been a long two weeks prepping, decorating and shopping- too tired to make dinner for four.! Placed the order Christmas Eve - gave them a list with my name, time if pick it up, my phone number what we wanted, & how many per the order.... Just to make it easy for them since they were very busy. I only saw one waitress for the whole restaurant. I did put on my list no MSG, less salt, less oil due to friends health issues... Thanked them with a smile & a Merry Christmas! (it helps to be nice).. Had one guest that doesn't eat pork or beef the other one likes meat ... so picking from the menu so everyone can be happy took a while. Ordered the vegetable chow mein, vegetable, fried rice, honey walnut prawns, broccoli beef, sweet-and-sour chicken, pot stickers (which they were more like Goza style (crispy) , vegetable delight.... Two of each except for the beef and rice.- Christmas Day picked it up. Everything was hot and OMG could not believe the portion size. -- so large. (it looks like when you 1 you get the typical Safeway container enough for two people)... but when you order two orders... you get a very large banquet style container-- and I have to say we had enough for eight people!... which was awesome as people got to take food home with them and plenty of leftovers for me the next day. The restaurant there was a guy I'm not sure if the owner that he was so nice and helped carry the food out to my car and they also gave us free crispy eggplant and I must say it was so good!!! it had a little bit of sweetness, but like garlic sauce and it stayed crispy throughout our meal... definitely I would order that next time! Everyone thought the food was very good. We all had second portions. The walnut prawns were very yummy in a white sauce. The sweet-and-sour chicken was a hit Mongolian beef was very tender. It's spot on for cheap, greasy, msg filled Chinese takeout food. My parents wanted to sit in so we did, and honestly it was a decent experience. It was super casual where you didn't need to dress up for it at all, and we ordered their Fortune Star dinner. If you didn't know, you always get served the soup first, then the rest of the entrees after finishing the soup. We did order a few extra dishes on top of what was there as well, and rice is extra. Around 10 dishes + soup served around 9 people, the food came out super fast, they took care in making sure that vegetarian dishes and non vegetarian dishes were separate, and we pretty much finished everything. Yeah, stuff like the beef with satay had so much MSG you could probably be the cause of California's drought problem with all that thirst for water, but when you crave for some Walnut prawns or cream cheese wontons at 3pm when everything else is closed it's a decent option. Was craving Chow Mein at 2pm while at work so it's either a Chinese restaurant or Safeway. So I drove over 25th Ave and saw a Chinese resto with parking right in front. Saw that they have lunch special that extends till 2:30pm, I ordered the Chicken with string beans and noodles. Order was done in 5minutes. Thursday afternoon my friend and I went in to order food. It was a little after 3 and when I asked if they still had lunch specials the lady said no. We said thank you and we were going to find some place else to eat. She said ok and asked what we wanted. We wanted to do 2 Orange Beef lunch special with fried rice. Luckily my friend asked how much each one was. They lady said $16 each. The menu shows lunch specials $10.95-$11.95. No item on the lunch special shows $16. We were trying to leave and the lady said it was because the beef is more expensive. A lot of the beef items on the lunch special are $10.95 with the exceptions of the Szechuan and Mongolian beefs being $11.95. We felt they were trying to raise the prices. Friday around 11:30am my friend blocks his number and calls asking how much the orange chicken lunch special is. He is told it $12.95 and with tax a little after $14. My friend is African American and now we are under the impression that it was a discriminatory move to try to raise the prices on us like that. Fortune star is your typical Chinese food restaurant. It is okay "Americanized" Chinese food (ie orange chicken, beef and broccoli, fried rice, etc). It can get a little greasy and their deep fried foods are not consistent in taste/quality. For example, when we got it last night the walnut shrimp and orange chicken were fried in really old oil. They do throw in free potstickers or egg rolls with your order. We usually only get takeout, so I can't speak to their service. I would just say it's mediocre food. read more

In one last attempt to see if this place was still decent we ordered a Chicken Salad to go. They drowned the food in dressing, something they've never done before. I do have to say the food is really good. However, since I Doordashed all this food to a tune of 100.00, they proceeded to pile up tons of rice and very little Chinese food because they knew I was not eating in the restaurant. Very disappointing.... I really feel cheated. However, if I was eating in the restaurant, there is no way they would make every patron pick rice with every dish. The rice is an addition and you pick what you want. It is very clear they wanted me to pay mostly for rice and a very steep price. Never again. I'd love to post a picture because now they don't come in the red/white containers, you have to have it in a regular white container for more food, which is where the pile up the rice and tiny bit of Chinese food. read more

I know, I know. Sweet and sour pork is not really Chinese food. But it's SO good! And we love it, along with other dishes that I really am not certain would be recognized in China: sizzling rice soup, mu shu pork, BBQ pork fried rice, General Tso's [meat] (chicken, shrimp, etc.), orange beef, etc. If you like that type of food also, then Fortune Star is for you! Basically, this is our "go to" place for American Chinese food in San Mateo. On another note, we've ordered $500+ of food here for large group lunches (i.e., church gathering, etc.) on more than one occasion. We have found the folks here to be prompt, the food was on time and hot, they offered us discounts, etc. So I would highly recommend Fortune Star for that type of event also. read more

Had another take out meal from Fortune Star. Feedback on other dishes: Crispy Duck - Not particularly crispy, but that's not surprising given it was takeout. The bigger issue was that the meat was a little dry and tough. Broccoli Beef - Solid rendition of this staple dish. Chicken with Snow Peas - Juicy chicken and properly cooked vegetables in a white sauce. Mixed Seafood with Tofu in Clay Pot - Fried tofu and assorted seafood, but the overall flavor was just okay.
