I found out this is the owner of another very popular restaurant in Belmont which currently still have long line every time we visited. So we decided to try his new restaurant. The location is off the busy part of San Mateo which is awesome. Plenty of free parking and no wait at the restaurant. People walked by would second thought on coming in. Clay pot rice - Hands down the best I've had in many famous clay pot rice restaurants in the Bay area. See the pictures on how crunchy they made the rice without too much oil. HK style sweet and sour spare ribs - 生炒骨 very good. The flavor is very authentic to me like those I had in HK. Crunchy batter. I really liked it. Seafood clay pot - That one was fine, like the flavor, but nothing particularly special. Shredded chicken salad - it's good but I've had better. The main thing is the 沙姜粉 is not as strong. The quality of chicken is fine, decent yellow hair chicken flavor. It's too bad that the location may not be a visible location but this place is truly above average. Golden Wok Bistro is a bit out of the way in a strip mall with a Mexican supermarket and Mexican restaurants but this place is legit! This is authentic Cantonese food done well. Because the chef previous worked in a Hong Kong style cafe, there are also baked rice dishes (which they call risotto on the menu) and HK style milk tea. I went with a large group so we were able to sample a variety of dishes. The congee had the right texture and consistency with the subtle sweetness of glucose released from rice starch when it is cooked long enough. chow mein is Hong Kong style with a good amount of sauce. Clay pot rice had the right amount of browned but not burnt crust at the bottom. Baked fish fillet rice (cream sauce) was also just right, although a tad too salty. Baked pork chop rice (tomato sauce) was made with panko crusted then fried pork chop which was then pre-cut. That's the way to do it. However, the sauce could have been had more tomato flavor and sweeter. We had other dishes too, that were done well. The service was friendly and helpful. The interior and surrounding area looked old and not updated. If more people seeking good Cantonese food were aware of Golden Wok Bistro, it would be a lot busier. The food here is absolutely disgusting. I ordered 4 items for takeout and every single item tasted stale and old as if it was frozen and reheated. The chicken had a weird texture to the meat, was covered in salt, and was inedible. The same was true for the walnut prawns which had a staleness to the breading and prawns and the walnuts tasted old and were soft and not crunchy. Nothing we ordered tasted like it was made with fresh ingredients. The food was so bad we ended up tossing everything. The bill total was $77.68! Hands down the worst takeout experience ever. Ambiance was a small family bistro, take out better, chairs a little greasy, improvement needed, salt, soy juice could use a daily wipe down from grease on containers. Came here an hour before closing. The restaurant was empty and we we took our food to go. The staff were very friendly and quick with making our food. We had ordered the Chinese broccoli, fried crab meat puff, and honey walnut prawns. 5/5 for the crab puff. Really delicious! 4/5 for honey walnut prawns- pretty good portion, big prawns, the sauce was just a little thick for me. 3/5 for the broccoli and oyster sauce. Not sure if this was really worth $15. The waiter was friendly and apologetic even when she didn't need to be (because we went up to the podium for more water). I would give it a 5 star but it was a little dirty to me. This place has been around for many years, possibly under different owners, but a first time for me trying it. It's tucked away in a neighborhood shopping center. We got there and it was relatively empty--except for 1 or 2 tables. We were greeted and seated immediately. They serve standard Chinese (Cantonese style) dishes, rice plates, noodles and congee and have Hong Kong cafe type rice plates. For our party of 2, we decided to order rice plates rather than eating family style, a la carte dishes. So we ordered the Seafood Baked Rice and Portugese Baked Chicken. The dishes overall were tasty-- a lot of sauce over both the rice. Speaking specifically on my Portuguese baked chicken, albeit saucey & tasty, the chicken was lacking. They were thinly sliced, pounded & tenderized chicken breasts, the pieces were the size of my palm & thin sliced in half vertically. There was a generous amount of seafood on the baked seafood dish. Both dishes had an abundance of bell peppers and onions. The portions was large and had leftovers to take home. I would give this place a solid 3.5 stars for food. The prices were reasonable and on par for Cantonese food the area; ranging between $12-$16 depending on what you order, some specialty dishes (claypots) will be pricier. They offer good Cantonese comfort foods and worth a try if you live in the area. read more

Wasn't sure how crowded it would be Christmas eve but there was ample seating at 6:00 PM. Only 3 other tables with customers. A lot of empty tables. People came mostly for takeout orders. Can't remember the name of the dish, but it was silken tofu with veggies in a sauce. Yum. Their fried pork was less to be desired. The cuts of meat were super tough and mostly bone. The meat was dry and the skin was oily. You'd think they'd cancel each other out. Anyways, I'd only come back for the fish and tofu. I'd skip the pork in the future. We ordered 3 dishes: Honey walnut prawn: we thought the shrimp was kind of bland and needed some pre-seasoning before frying. Walnuts were perfect tho. S&P deep fried fish: while this dish was cooked perfectly, crunchy on the outside, the quality of the fish was not up to par and not good as parts were mushy as if improperly defrosted. Braised tofu with meat and seafood: this was the best of the three dishes. Flavorful and the gravy was the proper consistency. Service: just the basics of bringing the food to the table. I'm going to start off this review by saying that my Chinese parents gave their stamp of approval of this restaurant, which is always a plus in my mind. We live close by but it took us over 6 months to try it. We were impressed enough from our first few visits that, when we were hosting my parents AND my in-laws (also Chinese), we decided to order from here again. Zero regrets! Plus, a single order is HUGE - Bitter Melon with Spareribs: I personally don't like bitter melon so I didn't have any, but everyone else liked it. - Mixed Seafood with Veggies: Decent amount of seafood - Braised Tofu with Black Mushroom: Pretty good, not overly salty - Peking Duck: Tbh, some of the reviews had me skeptical about this, but our order was great! I crave this every once in awhile so I'm glad there's a place nearby that we can order this from - Honey Walnut Prawns: Sadly, this was my least favorite dish. The prawns are big and plentiful but something about the batter and sauce is off. The walnuts are good though. - House soup: We've received a complimentary soup each time we've ordered so far and there's huge chunks of carrots and corn in it.
