I was sent to Ms. Mikki at Fortune Tattoo by a good friend, whose judgment I trust. I came in with sort of a vague idea of how to commemorate my cat on my arm, sending Mikki a short description and an image off the Internet. After a quick consult and more emails exchanged - Mikki was very responsive, and it was lots of fun to bounce ideas around - I went in for the first tattoo session a month later to watch her create a half sleeve with my cat as Legolas from the Lord of the Rings. You may notice that this is a somewhat nerdy idea, which perhaps some would scoff at. Not so Mikki. She got it immediately, and when I came in what she had drawn up exceeded my highest expectations. During the session, I discovered that Mikki is not only absolutely meticulous, clean, and well-prepared, she also has a light touch (which is good because I can be a bit of a wimp). In addition, Mikki is a very kind, interesting, and spiritual human being, which made talking to her a true joy. I felt all around well taken care of and was beyond excited about the process. In the upcoming sessions, she finished the colors on my tattoo, and while it took a bit of a leap of trust to let her choose them, I do not regret it. The shading is amazing, and the kitty really looks like my cat! She also was able to incorporate little requests I made easily if they made sense and was very kind in explaining when she thought something wouldn't work. I knew I could trust her, and I'm happy that I did. Spoiler alert: The finished tattoo is fantastic. Every time I look at it, I'm beyond happy with it, and even my mom (who does not like this whole tattoo thing) had to grudgingly admit that it is "impressive" and "beautiful". In a nutshell, my experience at Fortune Tattoo was all around in every way wonderful. So much so that I intend to come back for a tattoo of my second cat done in the same style on the other arm. For the past year and a half of my time here in Portland, I have wanted to add some ink. I've been itching, but alas, the funds have eluded me. The last time I had a little ink therapy was over two years ago in Dallas, Texas by a friend who has done most all of my tattoos. It was time for more. I have been to at least 15 different shops in southeast and heard of some other great shops around town. A lot of those shops have some serious wait time too. Not to say that I was able to just walk in here and get something done. I didn't. I had to wait over two months. I found out that the owner, Mikki, has been doing Japanese tattooing for many years and her book was perfectly in line with work that I already had. Well, I finally made it in and she freehanded a design to cover up what I needed and made the work blend in seamlessly with my existing piece. I've been getting tattooed for about 17 years now and finally found an artist and shop I feel comfortable in. During my visit the shop was filled with all women, which felt empowering. The owner seems to have created an inviting atmosphere for both artists and clientele. I went to Gin Hicks and can't wait to return for more work and a lot of fixing previous artwork from old tattoos. I love her direct East Coast personality. We all have bad days, but you NeVeR want to catch a tattoo artist on one of theirs. I was getting a tattoo enhancement, because my existing lotus was fading, as it was not outlined. I chose Ms. Miki because she clearly has some beautiful work and seeming knowledge of sacred art. We had a consultation and she asked me what I liked about my tattoo and where I saw it going as we were enlarging it. I showed her examples of her own work that I adored. We set the appointment and I asked to come back before the final sitting for a preview of what she had come up with. She said 'no', that she would have a few variations ready for me. Day of the appointment. I arrive on time. Ms Miki doesn't. Finally coming in over half and hour late, she has NO art drawn up for me. She says she'd rather "freestyle" it. I should have walked out then, but I was leaving the state the very next day and really trusted her work. In the end, what she tattooed on my arm is a MISFORTUNE. My one lotus then multiplied into three, sitting in a swamp of army green background. It is all very flat, with no precision, no particular feature and no attention to detail. I even stopped her at one point, saying it was not what we talked about. She assured me it would be good by the end. It wasn't. I tried reaching out to her about my disappointment after I had arrived in MT. She admonished me and accepted absolutely no responsibility for the lousy and permanent work she did. She told me to find another tattoo artist. When I tried to see her upon two separate occasions in PDX she was unavailable to consult with me. When I moved to Portland I knew I wanted to find an epic artist to finish a sad, unfinished fish tattoo on my ribs (ow). After scouring the internet and instagram I came across Olivia. Her style is so unique. It's sort of traditional but she really puts her own spin on things. She's awesome. So I went to her and showed her my fish I had and explained I wanted some flowers and some water/waves to fill it in and give it an environment. I was flexible and was really looking to her expertise to help guide me in the right direction with my tattoo. I trusted her instincts. She suggested/asked if I wanted to add more fish which I hadn't considered. I liked the idea so she said she would draw up some stuff. When I came in for my appointment she had some flowers and fish drawn up separately- so they weren't all connected in one big drawing. She then cut out each individual flower and fish and carefully placed them to not only go with my existing fish but to also flatter my body and give the tattoo movement. She later did the same thing with finger waves. It was awesome that she really too into account how the tattoo would flatter my body. After 4 sessions of horrible pain (ribs suck), my tattoo is finished! It is so amazing I could cry. Olivia was so flexible and kind and easy to talk to. She's fast too!! I couldn't believe how much she could bang out in 2-3 hour sessions. When my tattoo is healed I'll post a completed picture. Positive things first... On March 29th of this year my sister and I were both finally free at the same time and decided that was the day we were getting Trillium Flower tattoos in remembrance of our dad. It seems same day tattoo appointments are hard to come by these days, but Fortune was open and happened to have an artist for each us - and at nearly the same time. Yes! One was Stephanie, she tattooed my sister. The other was a guy subbing from somewhere in the Mid-West, also known as chain-smoking-talking-on-his-cell-phone-kind-of-interested-in-working guy. I got him. Nice enough, once we got his attention. The shop appeared clean. It's in a great location. It has fab reviews on Yelp - 4 stars overall. Perfect, right? And now the not so positive... Over the course of the next few weeks, undenounced to each other until we recently connected for dinner, my sister and I each had terrible skin rashes and swelling. Not the normal post-tattoo healing. I hadn't even thought of checking with my sister to see how her tat was. My sister is tough, and Stephanie took her time and seemed gentle, meticulous. Why would she have had any issues? I had come up with excuses for mine; the guy was heavy handed, I thought, ok so that could be why the unusual swelling. Plus, I've had bouts of eczema (though not on my forearm where the tattoo is, in fact only on one of my hands). I convinced myself it was eczema despite my partner and co-workers saying, dude - that's infected! My sister and I followed the aftercare instructions to the 'T', and neither of us are new to tattoos. So what happened? * Maybe dad didn't like our choice of memorial and thought it would be funny to smite us from the great fishing boat in the sky? * Was it the ink? * Was it the cleanser? * The needles? In retrospect why didn't we call the shop to ask what's up, or go in and have them take a look. Had we known of each other's infections before they cleared up, we would have. We didn't and I think it boils down to this, we each thought our bodies had a legitimate organic reaction not related to the tattoo experience, tools, or artists. Thought. Past tense. We're all healed and everything is fine so why Yelp it now, a month and a half later? Because I have to know if anyone else has had this experience after being tattooed at Fortune, and if so, WTF? read more

I looked around for someone to put together a few ideas in my head for my next tattoo. After looking through a lot of websites and Portland artists, I decided that Gin Hicks of fortune tattoo was the artist for me. I set up a consultation and when I went in I talked to her for a few minutes and showed her 4 different ideas I had that I basically wanted to make into one tattoo. After explaining myself I thought, ok I just probably totally confused her because I am not even sure what I want anymore. She started giving me a few ideas and and I was instantly in love with the concept. So about a week before my appointment she wanted me to come in and go over the final sketch and when I saw it, I was literally speechless. Gin exceeded my expectations with the artwork she produced. Day of the tattoo - It was great, the shop is super clean and every artist there was very friendly. The decor, light, people really make this a comfortable environment. I sat for Gin for about 7 hours so that she could finish her masterpiece in one day. She is gentle and has a great sense of humor. I cant' say enough good things about her. Fortunate Tattoo is a terrific shop. The interior is very warm, with beautiful artwork and ink lining the walls. It is an open space, with a lot of natural light - very unlike most tattoo shops. The minute I walked in to make an appointment, I felt at ease. The defining characteristic of this space, though, is Ms. Mikki; she is hands down the most unique and skilled tattoo artist I've ever come across. Her calm and reassuring demeanor in my initial consult gave me confidence in her, and she helped give shape to my many ideas. Instead of simply rushing me into the chair, she really took the time to understand my thoughts, guiding me through my vision. I am so disappointed about my experience with Mikki at Fortune Tattoo. She obviously has a lot of positive feedback & she was recommended to me by my BIL who has been going to her for years, which makes it that much more disappointing. I'm the average 40 year old Mom with an awful tattoo on my back that I got when I was 18. I've been wanting it covered for years and years, but being a stay at home Mom, I couldn't justify spending the money on it. This October for my birthday, my husband scheduled a consultation for me with Mikki. I was beyond excited. We went to the appt on Oct. 30th, spent 20-30 mins discussing what I wanted. I did not have an actual picture, I had lots of different pictures of different types of clamatis flowers and hummingbirds. I wanted a combination of the 2. We scheduled my appt for 11-17 @ 5:00pm. I showed up for my appt yesterday, and as I walked in the door she says to me " Hi, did you get my message?"....me.."no, I didn't get a message". Then she proceeds to tell me that she left a message with my boyfriend Ken, cancelling the appt because she over booked herself. I don't have a boyfriend. I have a husband, named Matt I tell her. Doesn't matter, she continues to tell me that she needs to reschedule my appt. I expressed that I had just driven an hour to get there for my scheduled appt, but this didn't seem to matter. I eventually agreed to to re-book for the following Saturday. Before I left, I asked to see what she had drawn up for my Tattoo. She then told me, No...that she hadn't worked on it, it would be done tomorrow. I left. Then decided to call and cancel because I was so upset about it all together, especially that she hadn't even worked on my art. When I called and expressed this, her exact words were " I was just going to trace the picture you showed me, it's not that hard...I don't need that much time, it's not like I was doing a sleeve or something". I didn't show her one picture, I showed her lots of different pictures of the style of flower. Not a picture of what I wanted. She was supposed to draw something for me, based off of those pictures and my verbal description. Honestly, that last part was the worst of it for me. She basically told me that my Tattoo wasn't important to her and she didn't need to spend any time on it, or me. I would not recommend Mikki to anyone. read more

She was very professional, had several options to choose from when I returned, all of which were very hard to choose from since now I wanted them all. It's been 2 years since that tattoo was done, and the color is still wonderful and vibrant, the lines are clean and I had NO holidays or any spots where the ink raised up at all during healing. I have a few small, hand size pieces that I've gotten before I came to Fortune Tattoo. However, this experience was like a new beginning of tattooing for me, and I now characterize my sleeve as part of my identity. As a tattoo "amateur" I had some anxiety in approaching a tattoo shop with several unorganized, non-linear frames of ideas. A sleeve was to be my biggest and most substantial piece done and I wanted to find a place where I was comfortable opening up my mind to an artist. Miss Mikki helped alleviate my anxiety by supplementing my own inarticulate creativity into a sleeve of great depth. Often I found myself floundering on a theme that I couldn't quite put my fingers on--at one point it was suggested that I "surrender to the experience," and what prudent advice that ended up being. My ideas were taken to an entirely different plane of imagination and surrealism that I couldn't have conjured with the help of a magic wand. There was never a session in which I felt I wasn't in great hands. As my sleeve came together one-by-one (one more session to go!), I am certainly glad I went to Fortune Tattoo. My wife came in and received a incredible piece of art done by Ms Mikki, and I sat down and talked to her about my vision of what I wanted. This place is so amazing. We just went in to check prices and see how the place was and I must say that it's one of the cleanest and well set up tattoo shops we've seen. Anyways my wife and mother in law were looking at getting matching breast cancer butterflies which worked out cause there was a last minute cancelation. The tattoo artist was able to get us a price and a drawing quickly. Turns out that the cancelation showed up while the artist was helping us and tried to get her to push us out and get her tattoo instead.. The tattoo artist who turns out to be the owner of the shop told her no and continued to help us which I thought was awesome! Mikki is her name and she is the best. I would recommend this place to anyone even a first timer like my mother in law!
